NYT: Blame conservative blogs for the Michelle Obama tape rumor

Via the ‘Busters. Unlike yesterday’s Jay Carney smear, this one comes two-ply: The smear itself originates with unnamed Obama aides, eager to pin the sins of Hillary supporters like Larry Johnson on conservatives in the interests of “party unity,” and is duly and moronically repeated by the Times’ reporters, having somehow slipped through the 18 layers of fact-checking and editorial review that separates the pros from “nitwits” like yours truly. Money quote: “The Obama campaign isn’t going to let dishonest smears spread across the Internet unanswered.”
But the final straw for Mr. Obama, his aides said, was the story circulating on conservative blogs that a video existed showing Mrs. Obama making a racially tinged speech at their former church, Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
Mr. Obama was visibly irritated by the rumor when a reporter asked him about it last week.
Believe it or not, the crack fact-checking teams at the AP and the Guardian also somehow missed this one. Exit prediction: By the time of the Democratic convention, the media will be attributing Billy Jeff’s comment about Jesse Jackson before the South Carolina primary to Cindy McCain.

And we should be surprised why exactly? When have the MSM and print media NOT been in the pocket of recent democratic operatives?

I also heard that McCain thinks Obama is Muslim. Smear merchant.

Clearly the refrain for every unpleasant situation is going to be that it is a smear job (with hints of racism thrown in for good effect).
I wonder what Baghdad Bob is doing these days. He was so good a denying everything for Saddam he would be a perfect fit for Obama’s team.

It was a smear against Republicans. If Larry Johnson would have named someone instead of smearing all Republicans of weaselly holding onto some tape to use as an October surprise, it would have been an actionable smear.
Buddahpundit on June 13, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Michelle O. is her own worst enemy and eventually something will happen that she says that will derail his campaign. This big-mouthed racist america hater can’t keep her pie hole shut for very long!

This is the same NY Times that in September, 2000 at the beginning of the Palestinian suicide bombing campaign ran a gory photo of a civilian being beaten senseless by an angry mob. The Times headline and caption said it showed a Palestinian civilian being beaten by an Israeli mob. One problem with the Times description: The victim was an Israeli civilian beaing beaten by an Arab mob. The NY Times never quite corrected the little error. Then there was the day that left wing reporter Deborah Sontag wrote than an “Israeli military spokesman” told her that Israeli soldiers had murdered a Palestinian civilian. One trouble with Sontag’s reportage: There was no such “Israeli military spokesman”. The New York Times invented the whole thing.

Conservative blogs were also responsible for the rumor that Bush evaded his obligations at the Texas ANG. Is there anything conservative blogs can’t do?
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on June 13, 2008 at 3:15 PM
I guess this is part of their attempt to rehabilitate Hillary now that she’s droppped out of the race.
thirteen28 on June 13, 2008 at 3:16 PM
To be fair, it’s technically true, but extremely misleading. Conservative blogs have circulated the rumor, but they didn’t originate it and most I’ve read have offered it up in the context of Hillary (”Isn’t it low that Hillary would do this?” “Maybe this is what she’s counting on by not dropping out now,” etc.).
It’s like saying “Obama’s a Muslim”; it might be technically true, but for all intents and purposes it’s a misleading pseudo-factoid that aims to portray a politician or his supporters in a poor light. There’s no evidence that Obama practiced Islam nor any that conservative blogs made it up or tried using “whitey” as a smear. But that much should be obvious; there’s no such thing as a “May surprise” for the general election.

You guys need to see this.
A judge in Ohio has his pic in USA today with an Obama pic next to Che Guevara.
Rightwingsparkle on June 13, 2008 at 3:18 PM
Naw, the media are desperate to paint the believable rumor on a conservative dirty trick rather than coming from one of their own.

Incase you didn’t know, It was McCain’s darling daughter who got Sen. Byrd to join the KKK.

Gee, NYT- why not just go whole hog and say it was McCain who got the BJ from Monica Lewinsky, and it was McCain’s wife Cindy who said that she was never proud of her country until her husband started his campaign?

jgapinoy on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM
Actually, there is. Some of his childhood friends have been quoted speaking about seeing Obama practicing Islam as a child in Indonesia. (Direct evidence).
The NY Times recently (IIRC, it was last year) printed an article in which the adult Obama recited some Koranic verses in nearly perfect Arabic, and said he considers the Muslim call to prayer to be one of the most beautiful sounds on earth. (Circumstantial evidence).
Of course, Obama claims that he is a practicing Christian now. If you have read the mission statement of his long-time church, you may be surprised to find that a “Christian” church advocates killing God if God does not support black causes. Also, Obama’s “Christian” church permits Muslims to join its congregation, and claims that it currently has several active Muslim members.
AZCoyote on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM
Sounds like Willey Horton all over again.
Pundits still blame this on Republicans, even though it was Gore who first brought it up.
MarkTheGreat on June 13, 2008 at 3:41 PM
Bob Beckel began the rumor last Thursday or Friday.
The liberal media needs to get over itself and stop with thier B.S. bias that no one is buying anymore
ToddonCapeCod on June 13, 2008 at 3:47 PM
I’m waiting for the media to explain why the Obama camp started rumors of the possibility that he’d be assassinated. And yes, it was well before Hillary’s remark about RFK and before Huckabee’s mini-gaffe in front of the NRA.

I think the TUCC requires a class in Black Liberation Theology (I could be wrong) and then one walks down the aisle as public confirmation of acceptance of Christ as He is known by the TUCC.
No idea about Baptism.
Connie on June 13, 2008 at 4:21 PM
They got away with that example. To this day they incorrectly pass this same like to one another.
And this will be the same. In 10 or 15 years, democrats will talk about how Rush Limbaugh accused Michelle Obama of this and he was a racist. There’s also the distinct possibility that the can also add that he was eventually striped from the air in disgrace ….
If the democrats get their way and use the ‘fairness doctrine’ against him and other conservatives. Throughout the world’s history, accounts of events that started out as stories – became history because the countries that won wars that were fought were able to write the history.
On an ideological framework, the same is true. When they slander conservatives, repeat the lie between themselves, beat down any opposition to their version of events and ultimately silence their political opponents, they have won.

Though I generally hear the opening of his show, I’ve only visited the Michael Savage webpage two times. This past week he reported that his three reliable sources substantiated the rumor, via friends of a friend (proof of rumor status up front).
This would mark the third huge error in his political judgment in my book.
1. He consistently savages Fred Thompson.
2. He wishes the worst upon the State of Texas rather than limiting his ire towards those who actually overextended their power of authority re: the FLDS, also his pushing the FLDS as “innocent Mormons” which they are not, as they are the living extension of the worst elements ever practiced in human relations. (Yes, I defended the mother/child relationship as it was unlawfully brutalized by our government officials.) Beyond polygamy, the FLDS absolutely practice the blood oaths and covenants to protect eachother via terrorist acts. Hence, the Governor’s Mansion Arsonists.
3. Michelle O. rumor substantiated.
The Obamas, as with the FLDS, must be brought to task on legal grounds leaving no room for error in the judgements assessed with irrefutable evidence.

As the Vatican and Pope decided to not recognize Mormon baptism, what have they to say about the Black Liberation Theology? Yes, we’ve heard of the wannabe Priest’s ravings at their podium. But what is the official Vatican word on Black Liberation Theology? Worth investigating at least…
maverick muse on June 13, 2008 at 4:34 PM
Nor are they Mormons.
I can start a religion in my garden where I marry the vegetables and call it Cucumber Catholism but that don’t make me any more a Catholic than these people are Mormons.

The FLDS geneology traces back to the original Mormon Church community/population and practices the original Mormon doctrines that the LDS have since revised, EJDolbow.

Both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict have spoken out against liberation theology. I would assume that would also include BLT.
Connie on June 13, 2008 at 4:51 PM
As I said last week, the only credible thing I read about all of this was on some blog discussion where someone posted that Michelle Obama actually said, “Why’d he” as in “why did he?” and someone thought she’d said “whitey.”
I have paid next to no attention to this because it has been nothing but a rumor started by a left winger, with absolutely nothing to substantiate it.

Unless the left smears the right by lying about who started the mess. Then it’s all good.

If anyone is still interested.I was sent this New York Time article from RCP. This is an article on Obama reminising and about his chidhood ion 2006:
Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”
via NYT
Oh boy, that is not going to sit well with all of us who have been trying to defend Obama against the “Muslim”rumor
What was he thinking?

It’s clearly…”my baby’s Daddy…”
“baby’s” is clearly a plural possessive pronoun not a singular adjective describing “Daddy”.
