I am very angry, frankly, at the oil companies not only because of the obscene profits they’ve made but at their failure to invest in alternate energy to help us eliminate our dependence on foreign oil,” the senator said.

"I'm also angry that the tobacco companies don't sell more gum, and that alcohol manufacturers are trying to sell beer to people, knowing it'll damage their liver.

And TV advertisements, often as not, are for more TV shows, encouraging more watching of TV... awful what that'll do to you.

After looking, I can't find one single business that is making money by deliberately damaging its sales, and that makes me angriest of all" - Not really John McCain, but might as well be...

Democrats in Congress ... act like adults? Only if you mean 'adult' as in 'bookstore'. These are people who never learned to play nice, never learned to consider others (except those who can get them votes) and never learned to respect the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Maybe there’s hope after all

Don't count on it... at least not until next year. The Dems want these high prices to use as an election issue (and Barry O told us he just likes them in general, outside of the speed of the run up)

Everyone needs to call McCanin and your representative and let them know we need to do everything it takes to make us energy independent and that includes drilling. I called McCains office and told him the tide of public opinion is starting to turn and if you get on board, it is going to be a landslide in November.

If they hear it enough from enough people...

OldEnglish: if you want the Hummer, better buy quick, since GM is thinking about shutting down the line on it. Of course, you could pick up a used one easily since you'd only have to outbid the scrapyards.

I work in the oil industry. Business in the search for oil is booming because we can now get enough money for it to get the harder deposits out of the ground, ocean, but there is a dramatic shortage of drilling platforms and equipment today, so we couldn’t fix this problem overnight anyway. But drilling here and now is the solution, while we are researching new ways to be more efficient in energy production.

Subsunk on June 13, 2008 at 8:26 AM

Thanks for your input subsunk, it's good to get a perspective from someone that works in the industry.

I do have a question for you that I'd like your perspective on. While I completely agree we need to start opening more areas in the US for oil exploration and drilling so we import less oil from nations that hate us and are bending us over, isn't there currently a lack of refining capacity in the US as well?

It's my understanding the US hasn't built a new refinery in over 30 years (thanks to the envir-nuts) so even if we pulled more of our own oil out of the ground (which I'm all for) with a shortage of refining capacity how will this alleviate the high cost of gasoline if the oil just sits there and can't be refined in order to increase gas supplies to meet or exceed demand and thus drive down costs?

I look forward to your (or anyone's) input, thanks in advance.

You expect this man to wait in a ration line?

If there were lines then yes I would expect him to wait in line like others Americans. Anyone old enough to remember the gas lines of the 70's, which sometimes went for blocks, should know that if he cut to the front of the line someone would probably run him over or shoot him.

Speaking of lines going for blocks, most folks would not care much if they had to pay 6 or 7 bucks a gallon if it meant avoiding those.

We want to find more product…[I]t ought to be incentive to look for new product … and to get new product to the market

More product?

That sounds like illegal narcotic parlance rather than petroleum.

No, it's just a dumba** legislator trying to talk like a business guy. Plus, he doesn't actually want to say "oil."

One thing is for sure, the US goverment is in bad shape. They are a reflection of the American population, which is going to hell in a handbasket at breakneck speed.

McCain will just make the problem far worse with amnesty, and Obama will wipe out the treasury. It is like choosing between a shrp pine stick in the eye or a sharp oak stick in the eye.

I don't want either one.

"You expect this man to wait in a ration line?"

Well, yes, being he like so many others long ago bought into the faux testosterone (which he definitely doesn't need!) of driving around in a massively excessive gas guzzler.

$82, Mr. Norris? I tank up for that, get well over 100 miles additional on that tank of gas with my 3.0 liter 6 banger (which moves the Camry spiffily enough, thank you) and can eat a full steak dinner on the difference.

These monster Pickups and SUVs have been ridiculous for the last decade. The vast majority never seeing anything but highway driving, almost never carry more than 5 people, and the pickup beds never see anything but the stray toolbox and landscape plant. Safe in a collison? I hope so, because they have the basic maneuverability that an Abrams M1A1 tank puts to shame. Tend to roll over at double the rate, through.

Sorry, but I- as no tree-hugger but a proud Goldwater conservative- want to hear no whining about gas prices from people who made poor personal choices in transport, use them unwisely and who now will be lucky to get the resale value of scrap weight for them.
