they only cheer until they can no longer afford it. Most of these people think they will not be impacted by the higher gas prices. They have enough extra money to cover the increase. they know the vast "unwashed" masses don't and therefore they want the price to go up. It gives them more power over people. When Al gore is riding a bike to work I'll be all for higher prices too.

the dems are playing with fire. and I think they are going to get burnt. Maybe not in 2008 while they still have Bush and Chenny (oilmen) to kick around. But by 2010 with gas at $8.00/gal and the oil still not being drilled DEms will be taken out wholesale from Congress. There might even be some blood at that point.

americans like their freedom of movement. they like being able to go to the store when they want to not when the bus comes. they like having room to live also in the suburbs. They do not like city life and escape it every chance they get.

Cheap energy is needed by the American people and we will kill every polar bear to get it. the environmental wackos are digging their own political grave by forcing gas higher.

If this keeps up, at this pace, we are headed not for recession or depression, but economic collapse.

Not in this this crazy Houston area. There are so many people running around this place that it is out of control. Construction, road expansions, new superstores, New subdivisions. The place will be wall to wall people soon.

I like it better when we could hunt, camp, and ride motorcycles whever we wanted. It's like living in an ant bed around here now.

Newt has a good point. Alot of the 'new speculators' are messing up commoditiy markets. They only buy commodities, like they are assets, i.e. stocks. The backwards thing is that the new specs keep buying when prices go higher. They never intend on actually owning the physical commodity. End users buy commodities with the intent of owning the physical, later.
Econ 101 tells me that when prices go up, you don't buy more. You buy less, but they don't. What's happening is other specs, with less money, don't take the opposite side because they are afraid to. Like many of you have said, commodity markets are fueled by rumors and emotion. All McCain would have to do is say, 'if I am elected we will start drilling for oil'. Oil prices could drop $20/bbl easy, and probably $50 if the SPR was partially opened this summer.

Newt is a has-been and a dangerous trap for Republicans.

We need a sensible, small-government advocate with a clear consistent message, not a bloviating unelectable pedant who is so in love with government and in hearing his own voice.

And, of course, his global warming position is crap - a trojan horse for the Dems.

Carpools are workable solutions for suburban commuters who keep regular schedules and travel to central locations such as downtown areas. The people who are really hurt are the maids, plumbers, electricians, contractors, retail clerks, people who work odd hours, the people who travel to decentralized, multiple and/or out of the way locations to make a living. I know working poor families who apportion all of their gas to getting to work and don't drive otherwise. They consider little things such as having to pick a sick child up from school to be a hardship.

People such as my angry socialist college-professor brother-in-law cheer as prices rise. The Leftist desire for high gas prices drives me crazy.

As usual logic is right but political mindset does not understand the term nor does it care to hear what it has to say.

"Drill Here, Drill Now and Pay Less" does not put money directly into their pockets so they do not care.

But it is OK to sell it (rights to drill/explore) to the Chinese who will provide the politician the cash they feel entitled to. Special interest groups will take the money from the Chinese and put directly into the politicians coffers.

The Honorable Gingrich, a historian, will also remind us: Carter sold the Panama Canal to the Chinese, Clinton sought permission to turn over control of vital ports on the west coast to the Chinese, now Obombem wants the price of fuel to go higher but only on his terms.

Let's take back our government and elect people we can trust and who will listen to their constituents vice consultants.

If the GOP had any guts at all they would make “Drill now” the #1 issue, run ads, etc. They would take back the House this year.

They basically are adopting that strategy. There's only one problem, and it's a big one:

John McCain

Newt is a has-been and a dangerous trap for Republicans.

We need a sensible, small-government advocate with a clear consistent message, not a bloviating unelectable pedant who is so in love with government and in hearing his own voice.

And, of course, his global warming position is crap - a trojan horse for the Dems.

He had me until he mentioened global warming. That being said, even Newt's global warming talk makes more sense than everyone elses.

Other than that, no one makes more sense on how to fix this than Newt.

We can’t drill our way out of this.

I guess that's like saying we can't just breathe our way out of suffocating.

Is this the year for a serious third party with a Presidential candidate who has some form of a clue about more than one issue at a time?

As you watch, bear one thing steadily in mind. We had a Republican president and a Republican Congress for six years, five of them post-9/11 when everyone could see very clearly where the revenue was going.

Yeah, and in the 70's, 80's, and part of the 90's.

Yet, it was a Republican that created the monster known as the EPA.

As is typical, the right is offering realistic ideas and solutions, and the left has it's proverbial head in the sand and pie-in-the sky solutions that don't help us today.

BTW, I detest Nancy Pelosi more and more each day.

Hear, Hear, Newt! This is the top priority for the US. Terrorism from the middle-east would/will wither like the wicked witch of the west's feet if and when we diversify our energy plan.
We must not only cover our energy needs but extract enough oil, shale, coal and nuclear power and produce enough energy to EXPORT it and COMPETE with the Middle East. Flood the global market with cheap oil/fuel and crush the Middle East where they are. WE CAN DO THIS!! Make them eat sand and dirt-cheap near worthless oil. WE can sell it China, WE can sell it India, WE can sell it to anyone that doesn't want to be under the OPEC jackboot. We have the money, the technology and now all we need is the will. WE can honor our ancestors and our children by protecting and defending this great nation. We've battled ourselves, we battled the strongest armies on the battlefield, and we brought the USSR to its knees. We can beat this enemy.

Here's a line from BHO... YES WE CAN!!!!
