Webb is a turncoat he used to be a Republican. I think he served as Navy Secretary for only four months before the Reagan administration fired him.

I still cannot believe that Senator Allen lost to this guy. Allen should be our nominee for President instead of Mac-Dim-ocrat.

Whenever I hear about the Confederates “gallantry”, I can’t help but think of Pickett’s Charge during the battle of Gettysburg. Yes it was noble. Yes it was gallant. But in terms of military strategy, it was the last word in dumb.

This is why I place Jim Webb as a possible VP candidate in pretty much the same light that I place Pickett’s Charge.

Gallant, but dumb.

Had it worked, it would have destroyed McCellan’s force. It was a great flanking move. Also, that book answers why a brilliant general would make such a “dumb” move. It wasn’t move, it was a great flanking action.

If the Dems can get away with a KKK member from WV in the Senate, why not run a pro-Rebel White guy with the first Black candidate? It’s perfect in its irony and core hypocrisy of the Democratic party.

The rebels were correct. Lincoln destroyed Federalism, it just took till Wilson for a President to realize it.

He also removed the one real check against the Federal Government and that was Secession for oppressive behavior.

He’s a prickly SOB, but he’s also smart and very tough. He signed up for the Marines knowing that the casualty rate for Marine 2 lts was 80%, and he was awarded every medal from the Navy Cross on down.

Yes he was a brave man, so was George McGovern (a bomber pilot in World War II). However like McGovern, he is a lousy, dangerous politician.

As for this Civil War crap… a civil war is a war between two or more factions, or groups fighting for control of one government! The Confederate government had no more of a desire to over run, or control the government of the United State and more than the 13 colonies in 1776 wanted to control the government in London England!

The stupidity and ignorance of the American people knows no bounds!

meaning that if the South thought the war was about abolishing slavery, they wouldn’t have fought. They needed people to help them work the fields. It didn’t have to do with racism as much as they needed people to work in the fields. Many white immigrants were indentured servants as well (like the role Mexicans play today).

Absolutely right. If it weren’t for the Civil War, slavery would have been a part of the South for another 50 years at least (or until machines or Mexicans could take their place as workers in the fields). There weren’t enough people in the South to work the fields (without imported slaves – indentured servants) so that the industrial north could be supplied with cotton and produce. The Civil War wasn’t about slavery. . .

There are tributes to the incredibly brave Confederate soldiers defending their homes in town squares all over the South. War is horrible, but defending your home and freedom is incredibly admirable.

However, I don’t like to get into totally trashing Webb. His book Born Fighting is fascinating, though marred by its populist POV. He’s a prickly SOB, but he’s also smart and very tough. That said, I think he’d be a bad vp, and if he were running on the Dem ticket, I would still continue to do everything I can legally do to insure Obama’s defeat.

I’m surprised I haven’t heard Mark Warner’s name floated around as a VP possibility. He had about an 80% approval rating when he left VA’s governor mansion. I know he’s planning on running for the Senate (to fill John Warner – no relation – seat), but if the Democrats really want to win VA Mark Warner is probably the best chance they have.

John Warner was not much of a Republican.

He adds next to nothing to the ticket, and certainly doesn’t shore up Obama’s gaping vulnerabilities.

But Obama is not running a substance campaign. He only cares about Webb’s image. He’ll simply try and sell Webb to centrists.

As revealed in The Reagan Diaries, President Ronald Reagan wrote on February 22, 1988: “I don’t think Navy was sorry to see him go.”

Enough said.
