Webb is a turncoat he used to be a Republican. I think he served as Navy Secretary for only four months before the Reagan administration fired him.

Personally, I am offended that he represents my state and country. But on the other hand, he's the perfect compliment to the "messiah." Both are clueless.

I still cannot believe that Senator Allen lost to this guy. Allen should be our nominee for President instead of Mac-Dim-ocrat.

If Barry Hussein fingers an angry white male politician who has an undue love for the Confederacy (and who always looks like he's about to blow a gasket) for VP, it would be a gift from the gods. Please, please Loki, show BO the light.

Whenever I hear about the Confederates “gallantry”, I can’t help but think of Pickett’s Charge during the battle of Gettysburg. Yes it was noble. Yes it was gallant. But in terms of military strategy, it was the last word in dumb.

This is why I place Jim Webb as a possible VP candidate in pretty much the same light that I place Pickett’s Charge.

Gallant, but dumb.

pilamaye on June 11, 2008 at 8:01 AM

Actually, it was probably brilliant.

Lost Triumph

Had it worked, it would have destroyed McCellan's force. It was a great flanking move. Also, that book answers why a brilliant general would make such a "dumb" move. It wasn't move, it was a great flanking action.

I'm so sad. This is what has become of my home state of VA. I grew up in Fairfax and back then it was conservative. Then the libs moved in - probably because we had some of the best public schools in the country and low crime, (gee, I wonder why that was?) Now look at Annandale and some other No. Va. suburbs inside the beltway. The libs are making it a toilet like they make everyplace they decide to settle down. They're trying to invade Loudoun, now too, (where my parents now live and have since the '80's.) They get their carpetbagger Dem candidates to run there thinking that people in Loudoun are a bunch of hucklebillies. No. Va was not always so dimwitted, my friends. I wish the Jackasses would get the hell out of my Red State and move across the river where they belong.

Loose cannon...This guy couldn't go three months without making a complete a$$ of himself...The comment about wanting to punch out the President when GW asked about his son in Iraq and the not so concealed weapon charge are two recent examples. Add in the homo-erotic writings and you have the makings of a real fruit salad...Obama's too smart to get mixed up with Webb.

If the Dems can get away with a KKK member from WV in the Senate, why not run a pro-Rebel White guy with the first Black candidate? It’s perfect in its irony and core hypocrisy of the Democratic party.

The rebels were correct. Lincoln destroyed Federalism, it just took till Wilson for a President to realize it.

He also removed the one real check against the Federal Government and that was Secession for oppressive behavior.

Yes he was a brave man, so was George McGovern (a bomber pilot in World War II). However like McGovern, he is a lousy, dangerous politician.

After reading the posts here I see that the vast majority of you people don’t know the difference between a picture of you own ass and a hole in the ground! The so-called Civil War (it was not) was no more about slavery than World War 2 was about the Jewish People or the Holocaust! The states ARE SOVERIGN, and do have a right to secede from the union! If you think not than I suggest you take down that candy stripped flag you are so proud if and turn your ass over to the English, because the 13 STATES in 1776 had NO right to secede from Crown! I also suggest you READ the 10th Amendment of the Constitution!

As for this Civil War crap… a civil war is a war between two or more factions, or groups fighting for control of one government! The Confederate government had no more of a desire to over run, or control the government of the United State and more than the 13 colonies in 1776 wanted to control the government in London England!

The stupidity and ignorance of the American people knows no bounds!

To clarify. . .

If it weren’t for the Civil War, slavery would have been a part of the South for another 50 years at least

meaning that if the South thought the war was about abolishing slavery, they wouldn't have fought. They needed people to help them work the fields. It didn't have to do with racism as much as they needed people to work in the fields. Many white immigrants were indentured servants as well (like the role Mexicans play today).

One reason some of the Dems are so hot for Webb is the perception that he could bring in the Hillary-Appalachia-white working class vote. From what I've read, though, Webb's narrow win came mostly from the DC suburbs, which is already Obama turf. The rural areas of VA went for Allen. So I agree with those who say he really wouldn't bring that much to the ticket electorally.

Bash those who pushed secession, not those who answered the call to take up arms to defend their homes.

Absolutely right. If it weren't for the Civil War, slavery would have been a part of the South for another 50 years at least (or until machines or Mexicans could take their place as workers in the fields). There weren't enough people in the South to work the fields (without imported slaves - indentured servants) so that the industrial north could be supplied with cotton and produce. The Civil War wasn't about slavery. . .

There are tributes to the incredibly brave Confederate soldiers defending their homes in town squares all over the South. War is horrible, but defending your home and freedom is incredibly admirable.

I don't like his politics, except for his 2A support and his vote on the FISA bill.

However, I don't like to get into totally trashing Webb. His book Born Fighting is fascinating, though marred by its populist POV. He's a prickly SOB, but he's also smart and very tough. He signed up for the Marines knowing that the casualty rate for Marine 2 lts was 80%, and he was awarded every medal from the Navy Cross on down.

That said, I think he'd be a bad vp, and if he were running on the Dem ticket, I would still continue to do everything I can legally do to insure Obama's defeat.

Hmm, I wonder why none of this was bothered to be looked into when he ran against Allen by our stalwart, wonderful bulwark against facism Deciders in our Media Party?

Bulwark against facism. Yep.

I’m surprised I haven’t heard Mark Warner’s name floated around as a VP possibility. He had about an 80% approval rating when he left VA’s governor mansion. I know he’s planning on running for the Senate (to fill John Warner - no relation - seat), but if the Democrats really want to win VA Mark Warner is probably the best chance they have.

John Warner was not much of a Republican.

He adds next to nothing to the ticket, and certainly doesn’t shore up Obama’s gaping vulnerabilities.

But Obama is not running a substance campaign. He only cares about Webb's image. He'll simply try and sell Webb to centrists.

As revealed in The Reagan Diaries, President Ronald Reagan wrote on February 22, 1988: "I don't think Navy was sorry to see him go."

A lot of Democrats are still in love with Jim Webb primarily because he beat George Allen and took Allen out of the presidential race. A lot of Democrats really feared Allen as a presidential candidate, and others simply viscerally hated him. He would have cleared the field early and united the Republican party, and raised a ton of money while Hillary and Obama were duking it out. Mark Warner might not have even tried to run for the other Senate seat in Virginia if Allen were still around.
