The AP says he’s looking at several (Wes Clark among them, natch) and NBC claims he has his eye on one in particular, former NATO Supreme Commander James Jones. Consider the latter an “outside the box” choice among the 20 or so people on Team Barry’s shortlist. Does he dare nominate any man who isn’t a confirmed Clintonista, though? TNR is floating Ed Rendell but I find that hard to believe given what he said last week about Hillary “upstaging” Obama if she was on the ticket. If he’s so worried about his exposure on national security that he needs a vet and he’s willing to throw caution to the wind by snubbing Hillary and her cronies, then the obvious choice is Jim Webb, no? Swing state, renaissance man, and political experience as a senator and former Reagan (Reagan!) administration official — the one quality his other military candidates lack. Exit question: If he does put a general on the ticket, then McCain picks Palin, right? Somebody’s got to nominate a woman this year.
Update: Ted Strickland sounds like an emphatic “no.” Surprising.
Update: Safe to say you can count Jones out.

As I understand it, she only signed the civil union law after an amendment was added to define a marriage as between a man and a woman. Also, the law was passed in the legislature, so it was not a case in which the judicial branch imposed it. As far as I know, that meets all of the requirements for mainstream social conservative acceptance of the law, unless the goalposts have moved while I wasn;t looking (I’m no social conservative, so I may be wrong.) Rell’s bigger “problem” would be the fact that she is pro-choice, which will turn off a lot of pro-life voters; however, if the gambit is to pick a woman for demographic appeal, there’s really not a lot of wiggle room for a strict pro-lifer (the women who vote based on abortion vote overwhelmingly for the GOP anyway).
As for Michael Steele, he’d need to have more experience than his term as Lieutenant Governor to be considered for high national office.

I agree. Perhaps, if she was about to complete her first term as Governor of Alaska instead of just starting it, I would say put her on the ticket.

If Obama picks Webb, Webb’s quasi Child Porn passage in one of his works of fiction, brought out in the campaign against George Allen, may come back to haunt him.
Webb wrote of a Cambodian Father who performed a sex act on his son. Disgusting stuff. Caused about a week of news on the blogs and some minor mainstream media stories. But never really took off.
Watch for it to be a big issue if Obama taps him for VP.

Obama: I think he’ll choose Bloomberg. He needs the Jewish vote, he needs to pretend he knows something about the economy he’s all set to destroy, and he can claim that this proves how bi-partisan he is.
I don’t think he’ll pick Webb because they need him in the Senate.
McCain: I think it will be Mitt because of his ground organization, money, strength on economic issues, and ability to bring in Michagan.
Jindal is way too young and his resume needs some filling out.

I respectfully disagree. We’re thinking like Republicans here. Remember, that McCain’s biggest strength will be common sense Democrats.
Remember how the drive-by media rigged it so that Carter and Reagan were neck and neck in the polls. Then Mondale and Reagan were neck and neck in the polls. It was all bunk but we didn’t know that at the time.
McCain’s navy wins easily in November. I just hope he goes to the right with the VP choice. The hottie governor from Alaska would be purr-fect. All the feminazis will vote for her ’cause she’s got female parts and we conservatives will vote for her ’cause she’s actually conservative.

Excuse me? Jindal has experience at the state level in Louisiana then US Congressman and now Governor! Bobby Jindal is a far more viable candidate than some of the other names being thrown around (like Huckabee).
But what you are missing is Jindal’s real appeal for McCain Moonbats. He’s young, conservative, with a wonderful family and he’s ethnic. These are the contrasts old white guy with a patrician upbringing needs when running against a charismatic ethnic opponent whose patrician upbringing is lost in all the idiots who are congratulating themselves to be so progressive they nominated a black man.
Speaking of which, when did crafting a ticket become like ordering at Starbucks from some political barista?: I’ll take a half Kenyan/half Columbian (or whatever) with room for Caucasian on top….. In this environment, McCain comes off as exciting as chicken broth.

General Jones is a damn good man, was a very good Commandant for the Marine Corps, a true patriot. What he is not, is inclined to surrender to terrorism on any level, regardless of position offered to him. A man doesn’t get to General Jones’ position without being ambitious, but he is principled and down to earth, I’ve seen it first hand.
Wesley Clark is more of what Obama is looking for. Aloof, elitist, and holds a much inflated opinion of himself.

Wes Cark? Yeah he’s a real gem. He bombed the dog$hit out of the Chinese Embassy, was relieved and retired for that stupid business.
Obama is worthless as a Senator and shows typical crappy judgement as is his usual pattern. Let him pick Clark.
That will further insure his defeat in November!
