Chavez’ Gestapo law withdrawn

posted at 5:30 pm on June 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Hugo Chavez tried pushing through a law that would have required Venezuelans to inform on each other. The law, with its obvious historic parallels to Nazi Germany, roused even the thus-far complacent Venezuelans to protest. Chavez sounded retreat, at least for now:

Hugo Chavez has tossed out a controversial intelligence decree that would have forced Venezuelans to become informants and spy on their neighbors or face prison time.

President Chavez says the National Assembly will draft a new law from scratch in response to resounding criticism.

This marks the second time that Chavez has had to backtrack. He lost a referendum on a constitutional amendment that would have cemented his status as a dictator a few months ago. He finally admitted a narrow defeat on that referendum, but rumors had the gap as wide and shocking to Chavez.

No one can doubt Chavez’ intentions with this new law. He wants to use the power of his security forces to intimidate Venezuelans into submission — and to keep them from working together to oppose him. He would create a Gestapo atmosphere which would have the primary intention of putting fear and mistrust into the general population while protecting his own grip on power.

Chavez says the bill will go back to the National Assembly to remove “errors” and return for his signature. If the Venezuelans do not want to live in terror of their families and friends becoming government informants out of their own fear, then they need to stop that bill — and find a way to get Chavez and his fascistic vision out of office.

Yes, because of masses in protests, because the election is this fall, and the opposition is mostly imprisoned by him. May they all revolt soon, those good Venezuelans.

If you think about it, who would want a dictatorship? Obamanites comes to mind… but other then that!

Chavez was forced to backtrack on this law due to opposition from the Catholic Church in the country both because the law was a violation of an individuals human rights and because local priests would have been forced to pass along information they received during confessions to the government. He will probably have the national assembly draw up a new law allowing an exemption for the clergy and try to force through the bill again.

Oddly enough, lots of people, as long as you avoid the actual word “dictatorship”.

sandberg on June 10, 2008 at 6:22 PM

The left has always been prone to dictatorship. The fastest way to destroy a democratic country is to allow the left to have total control of the government.

Its a shame that most constitutions don’t have a way to prevent it from being destroy from within.

He tried to become a dictator and failed. He tried to impose Nazi-style laws on his people and failed. I have to wonder now if Kevin Spacey or Sean Penn or Danny Glover will travel to Venezuela to console him. Sadly, probably.

Bonfires. Can’t have bonfires because it contributes to global warming.

I’ll bet home-chimney fires contribute more to global warming than bonfires.

Chipping away at freedom, one carbon atom at the time.

Screw em.

They elected him in the first place, then re-elected him despite his dictator-like “presidency” during his first term when he was rounding up and jailing anyone and everyone evenly remotely critical of his regime. They even kept him around after he hijacked all non-native big corporations and then hijacked all the media outlets and turned them into state-run media outlets that his regime controls.

Let them have their cake and eat it too. They shall reap what they have sown, and I have not one iota of sympathy for them. Venezuelan voters are 100% all adults and they put Hugo in the position he holds today, and they keep him there.

Screw em.

I hope you were being sarcastic. Government already has just about every private agency spying on you. Banks, hospitals, doctors and employers just to name a few. But neighbor spying against neighbor is what they REALLY want.

Get the public at each other’s throats and you have succeeded in diverting all attention away from the government’s treason while they steal the country from under you. This is an old and time honored socialist tactic.

Many leftist organization are working to promote so called “hate crime laws” which would also work toward this end.
