Video: Laura Bush defends Michelle Obama

posted at 10:40 am on June 9, 2008 by Allahpundit

“I think she probably meant more proud,” says Mrs. B of Mrs. O’s most infamous campaign trail bon mot — a fine theory, but one that doesn’t quite jibe with the actual words used (or even Obama’s own take on what she meant). No matter. This is the charitable, politic way to play it, and certainly what McCain would want her to say when asked. The last thing he needs is the Bush family involving itself in the race and painting an even bigger bullseye on itself. That was Billy Jeff’s mistake vis-a-vis Hillary, and needless to say, his approval rating wasn’t south of 30. Besides, like I’ve said before, this stuff has diminishing returns. If McCain’s reduced to running ads in October targeting Michelle Obama, our straits will be even more dire than we fear.

Her comments on Hillary, though? Magnifique. Click the image to watch.

Nice, classy lady.

New tone in Washington.

Valiant on June 9, 2008 at 10:47 AM

When I heard people say that we picked the wrong Bush I thought they meant Jeb.

Bill C on June 9, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Regardless of your opinion of President Bush, you have to admit she is the classiest First Lady in a really long time.

txsurveyor on June 9, 2008 at 10:48 AM

Grace. Beauty. Humility. The qualities a first lady should exemplify first and foremost. Were you watching, HRC? Laura Bush could take you to school.

THAT’S IT!

D.C. is full of nuts who fight for the cameras but who conspire behind closed doors.

madmonkphotog on June 9, 2008 at 10:53 AM

She is wonderful. Sad that her kind of grace is so rare.

And, whoa, I want to see more of the NZ soldier dancers!

PattyJ on June 9, 2008 at 11:01 AM

thmcbb on June 9, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Laura Bush is the perfect First Lady; unlike Hillary, Michelle Obama, Eleanor Roosevelt and even Nancy Reagan (who got on my nerves).

infidel65 on June 9, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Such a kind and warmhearted lady she is. I think it’s safe to say that Laura Bush is The Best First Lady Ever.

Ellen on June 9, 2008 at 11:03 AM

Classy dame.

The definition of ‘gracious’.

Something which is totally lost on the tantric BDS infants of the far left.

locomotivebreath1901 on June 9, 2008 at 11:10 AM

This has been the tone of the Bush’s since they were first elected. Pearls before swine, laid at the feet of Mrs. Obama.

Hening on June 9, 2008 at 11:25 AM

I have to agree with her…yeah, a woman prez would be nice. A black prez would be nice. Just republicans. Color/sex needs to be trumped by more important things.

:)

I’ll say it for her. . .

Michelle O. is socialist Marxist, America hating nut case.

Texyank on June 9, 2008 at 11:46 AM

Laura Bush is being gracious, too bad Michelle Obama doesn’t deserve it.

TooTall on June 9, 2008 at 11:50 AM

I just love her.

If you notice, the ENTIRE Bush family, from Bush himself to his daughters, they always show graciousness when ask about others. Even others who show them no such graciousness.

It’s a class act all around.

Rightwingsparkle on June 9, 2008 at 11:57 AM

1. Laura had it exactly right, and this headline is not quite right. “Defense of Sorts” is what the ABC guy said, and I think that’s right. She smiled a lot, too.

2. His suggestion of her popularity as a Republican was stupid and completely irrelevent.

3. Michelle Obama is an angry leftist mired in victimhood, and neither cool, nor sexy. She looks like a Seuss character.

Jaibones on June 9, 2008 at 12:19 PM

JAIBONES: Very well said! It’s amazing how such angry, bitter people let their true feelings out for all to gasp at.

tx2654 on June 9, 2008 at 12:36 PM

I have no problem with the lovely LAURA BUSH defending MIKE OBAMA. My problem is when JUAN MC AMNESTY does it!!!!

Texyank on June 9, 2008 at 11:46 AM

Michelle O. is an anarchyst, a bitter one at that. She’ll play a worse role than Mrs. Heinz, by far, in this round.

Laura helped 43 get re-elected, and so did McCain, with all his fleas.

Entelechy on June 9, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Laura and McCain are probably going to do pro Obama PSAs together.

Amen. To stick up for GW Bush for a moment, he doesn’t disparage others. Both Obamas have talked about how unnamed others (“they”) said this and “they said that”, and Hillary brings up the “vast right wing conspiracy” and Bill Clinton laughs that Rush Limbaugh doesn’t like black people. As least it was refreshing to have a prez who isn’t always whining, pointing fingers, and burnishing his own image at the expense of others. That’s part of the reason his approval ratings are so long, but he doesn’t care about that.

Paul-Cincy on June 9, 2008 at 1:54 PM

“I think she probably meant more proud,”

to which Michelle responds, “Uhm.. yeah… yeah, yeah, yeah, more proud… yeah, that’s the ticket!”

ToddonCapeCod on June 9, 2008 at 2:51 PM

oh so Republican said, that Michelle said… it.. oh now I see.. how it is..

It’s our fault that she makes a gaffe.. It’s now our fault every time that Barack and Michelle make gaffes…

WTF.. thats because the MSM media will NOT cover the gaffes and the only way that you will hear about them is if a Republican reports about them.

Chakra Hammer on June 9, 2008 at 2:59 PM

Laura Bush isn’t a politician. She’s a nice lady that apparently doesn’t think mean thoughts. Her comments add nothing to Michelle Obama’s intent, or the political nature of Michelle Obama’s comments.

JiangxiDad on June 9, 2008 at 3:15 PM

Yes indeed Laura Bush is a extremely classy lady.

The verdict is out on Michelle Obama yet I will give Michelle a moment.. before I decide Laura may be being too gracious. We’ll see soon enough- it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks
