Gloria in excelsis Deo; Update: $30 per month for 3G, says AT&T; Update: The backlash begins!

3G, GPS, industry-leading battery life, tons of new apps, and at exactly one-third the price of the first model. It’ll even handle WordPress, according to Gizmodo. You’re advised to follow the last link and cruise through their liveblog (especially for info on the battery) since Apple’s page is getting slammed right now, but if you want to brave the traffic click the image below.
Minor disappointment: No video chat, as had been rumored.
Update: I haven’t seen it explicitly stated that it’ll support Flash, but Gizmodo notes a special iPhone page that debuted today from Major League Baseball featuring updated video highlights from games, so I’m guessing yes.
Update: Per Dvice, AT&T says 3G will run you $30/month. Note: That’s in addition to the phone plan. I have the cheapest package for the iPhone, with $20/month Edge connectivity, and it costs about $70/month all told.
Update: Is that all there is, Gizmodo readers wonder. My brother called a little while ago to complain along the same lines — no camera improvement, no video recording, no MMS, even. Yeah, it’s 3G, and yeah, it has GPS, but that’s it. It’s really more iPhone v1.5 than 2.0. Which I guess explains the price break: They’re worried that people who dropped $600 on the first iPhone won’t be ready to drop another $600 so soon if they tricked out the new model, so they decided to go halfway, cut the price way down to make it irresistible to suckers like me, and then next year they’ll roll out another upgraded model with the extra trimmings, again at a lower-than-expected price.

Blowback

ROTFLMAO
I use Macs 5 days a week at work, that crock of sh*t won’t work on me.

Totally OT, but I wish you could edit comments after you post them.
Anybody who’s EVER used a Mac knows what this is.

And the other kind of freezing is another issue. On our Macbooks, if you log out of a user there’s a 50% (not exaggerating) chance you’ll just be taken to a blank screen instead of the log in screen. We just hold down the power button and restart. It’s ridiculous. I’m not even gonna get into what the iMacs do.

One odd thing, the new iPhone has a plastic back to it’s body and not the nice metal one mine has. This is probably a cost consideration but it seems strange since all of the new iPods are coming out w/ all metal bodies.
I wonder if they’re designing it to only last two years. I remember my old original Motorola cellphones were built like tanks and would last forever. Then, the new slicker phones came out. Cool new features, but they were flimsy and started breaking after about 1.5yrs… and were dead by the time the two year contract was up.
My current iPhone is pretty solid and I have no doubt that it’ll keep running for years to come… however maybe this is limiting the profitable turn-around time and so the new ones are designed to be disposable.

I think this is getting off topic, but come on, I haven’t had a freeze/crash of any kind in years on a PC…
I love the iPhone and general fancy cell phone/PDA hype though. If people are told it’s cool they will buy it.
It’s also amazing how much more people are paying for electronic gadgets that are more convenient at best, yet bitch about gas prices.
Like the libs I am surrounded by. Flat panel HDTV – check. Blue ray technology – check. $500 cell phone – check. $150 a month for digital cable/interent/phone package – check. “ZOMG!!!!11 – it costs me an extra 10$ a week now to fill up my tank – the world is ending – big oil is eeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil.”

I’ve got XP Professional, and if I leave Teamcenter running when I’m using ClearCase, my Dell crashes like clockwork. On startup, a window pops up and tells me to uninstall the most recent software or hardware I’ve installed. Over the years, I’ve bought four Macs, and I’ve never had the trouble I’ve had at work with PCs. I’ve also spent years working on various Unix boxes with little to no trouble. It’s PCs that suck.
