Gloria in excelsis Deo; Update: $30 per month for 3G, says AT&T; Update: The backlash begins!

posted at 3:30 pm on June 9, 2008 by Allahpundit

3G, GPS, industry-leading battery life, tons of new apps, and at exactly one-third the price of the first model. It’ll even handle WordPress, according to Gizmodo. You’re advised to follow the last link and cruise through their liveblog (especially for info on the battery) since Apple’s page is getting slammed right now, but if you want to brave the traffic click the image below.

Minor disappointment: No video chat, as had been rumored.

Update: I haven’t seen it explicitly stated that it’ll support Flash, but Gizmodo notes a special iPhone page that debuted today from Major League Baseball featuring updated video highlights from games, so I’m guessing yes.

Update: Per Dvice, AT&T says 3G will run you $30/month. Note: That’s in addition to the phone plan. I have the cheapest package for the iPhone, with $20/month Edge connectivity, and it costs about $70/month all told.

Update: Is that all there is, Gizmodo readers wonder. My brother called a little while ago to complain along the same lines — no camera improvement, no video recording, no MMS, even. Yeah, it’s 3G, and yeah, it has GPS, but that’s it. It’s really more iPhone v1.5 than 2.0. Which I guess explains the price break: They’re worried that people who dropped $600 on the first iPhone won’t be ready to drop another $600 so soon if they tricked out the new model, so they decided to go halfway, cut the price way down to make it irresistible to suckers like me, and then next year they’ll roll out another upgraded model with the extra trimmings, again at a lower-than-expected price.

Are they still going to have the contract with ATT, or are we still going to have to crack it to get a decent provider?

So when is Apple shipping out the rebate checks for purchasers of overpriced 1st Gen iPhones?

On the Network: Verizon turned them down, a decision they probably regret.

All the networks in the US suck, pretty much. Whether it’s AT&T or Verizon or Sprint…. each suck royally.

I just wish they were all available everywhere.

Perhaps an iPod touch… shouldn’t that be updated soon?

Vanceone on June 9, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Hopefully they’ll still send out updates for the iPhone V1.0. I got mine in November (a gift!) and have been waiting, with growing impatience, for the promised firmware updates that would make a sweet phone even sweeter.

But do you still have to buy a new one when it stops charging?

Meh. It’s still a piece of jewelry.

Actually, I’m very happy with Verizon. Good quality, very few dead spots, high speed broadband, no dropped calls or sessions, prices aren’t that bad…

and that’s even out here in the boonies!

wccawa on June 9, 2008 at 3:49 PM

Actually, the AT&T network isn’t bad at all. I’ve been on 3G for a while, and it is available pretty much everywhere.

CarpeCanis: iPhone software version 2–with all the Exchange goodness, etc.–is coming for all existing iPhones.

The new handset has the GPS and other minor improvements, but your current iPhone will get all the new email stuff.

Should be out in July!

IntheNet on June 9, 2008 at 4:00 PM

AT&T had several plans available.

I’m not sure what any new plans are, but here were the old ones. Remember, data transfer is the biggest..

There is a range from $59.99 to $119.99, depending on your minutes. All had unlimited data transfer. For the 60 buck one it had 450 minutes and 5000 text messages. The 119 plan had unlimited minutes. 79.99 and 99.99 had 900 and 1350 minutes respectively. It also had rollover minutes, mobile to mobile, etc.

I’m not sure what new plans, if any, will be.

Vanceone on June 9, 2008 at 4:00 PM

If you already have an existing AT&T contract, then you just need to add the data plan. A couple of months ago with the old iphone, unlimited data was an extra $20 a month. Who knows how that will change with the new one.

how is the signal strength? I bought Motorola Z3 phone awhile back and it sucks when signal is weak (like in my house) my backup phone which is a cheap Nokia pulls in signal much better.

What good is a cool phone when it doesn’t get enough signal to receive calls etc? (ps this is not about diferent providers, here in Mex it’s basically all Carlos Slim Telcell, but my Noklia always has better signal.

I have a question for all the iPhone users here. What’s the point of paying for/using SMS text messaging when you have access to both instant messaging and e-mail? Why pay for that useless feature for a reason other than AT&T making you?

malan89 on June 9, 2008 at 4:56 PM

Just sold my 4GB on ebay for more than I payed for it, guess there are some suckers left in the world.

I would be careful if I were you. A lot of times the people that buy items for more than they’re worth (like this guy that bought a $50 Target gift card for $55) are some sort of scam artist. Probably of the Nigerian flavor.

malan89 on June 9, 2008 at 4:59 PM

It still doesn’t have any Flash support, and is unlikely ever to have it. Flash is slow, and is not optimized for power-sipping mobile devices. The only need most people have for Flash is for online video, and Apple already has a special delivery mechanism through YouTube for industry-standard H.264 video. Doesn’t make any sense for Apple, in the catbird seat, to bend over backwards to add Flash support. They’re in Microsoft’s position now — Apple can dictate terms. And while Microsoft would jump on the opportunity to create a “new standard” (thus giving them control via licensing), Apple can continue to push the true industry standard.

malan89 on June 9, 2008 at 4:56 PM

I’m not an owner, but I can tell you that both the original iPhone and the new 3G iPhone do *not* have instant messaging. I have no idea why — hard to believe it could be a technical restriction. It could be that Apple agreed not to, so AT&T would have the SMS revenue stream.

But given that several different companies are working on Instant Messaging clients, for use with iPhone 2.0 software (available in July), I expect SMS usage to drop off precipitously.

Splashman on June 9, 2008 at 5:10 PM

I agree with Splashman re: Adobe Flash. The MLB video highlights could just be H.264. A lot of things that used to require Flash are doable with JavaScript and XMLHttpRequest (“AJAX” to the masses). Of course, now that there is a third party application “managed ecosystem,” we could see Flash support. But I really doubt third party applications can mess with the built-in browser, so it might have to be a standalone solution. The sooner proprietary things like Flash go away, the better.

iPhone/iPod Touch does not yet have instant messaging. But even after it does, I expect SMS to continue to be used. It’s ubiquitous. I can send a text message to my mom on her three-year-old generic brand flip phone.

Where have you been? They’ve had a 3G network for quite some time — it just wasn’t widespread enough for Apple to make use of it. In the last few months, they’ve been expanding (+80 cities) and upgrading the speed. Here’s a list of cities with 3G coverage.

freevillage on June 9, 2008 at 5:23 PM

The Iphone is a fashion statement. That is it. Anyone who lays down a hundred a month for a cell phone plan is an idiot. I pay $30 a month, and get:

500 anytime minutes
Unlimited N&W
Unlimited Text
Unlimited MMS
Unlimited Mobile to Mobile
Unlimited Data

Also, I have a phone that has a FASTER data connection, 2 x faster to be exact, than the NEW iphone. My battery life is better, with replaceable batteries. Expandable storage as well, so not limited to any amount. GPS with navigation using any of a dozen different navigation software packages, including TomTom, Garmin, Iguidance, etc. The ability to tether with a laptop, or turn the phone into a wireless router with the push of a button, allowing dozens of computers to have wifi access sharing my EVDO Rev. A connection.

Yea, the Iphone is embarrassing it is so slacking on the features.

steadyrock on June 9, 2008 at 5:45 PM

muyoso, I thought that too. I laughed at friends who traded in their BlackBerry devices. Then I used one. It just works better. It didn’t matter that the connection was slower, it was a lot less stressful to navigate web sites, and in some cases the speed of the renderer made up for the lack of network speed. The responsiveness and stability of the OS blows any Palm/Windows Mobile/BlackBerry device out of the water. It’s a better media player than anything else out there. It has a better screen than anything else out there. And now it has GPS and third party software, which will fill a lot of gaps.

Sure, on paper, you can make a Windows Mobile monstrosity look like a superior device and a better value… but consider that you actually have to use the thing. It took me a while to see that… but it’s not about features, it’s about usable features. I haven’t seriously used my “better on paper” phone/PDA for months (it rarely leaves its charger), but I use an iPod Touch daily.

malan89 on June 9, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Update: Is that all there is, Gizmodo readers wonder

Yeah, yeah. Anyone who’s followed Apple knows that the complaints are to be expected. iPods have had less “features” than the competition, ever since the first model, but people still buy them by the truckload. Detractors say that’s evidence that Apple fanboies will buy anything with the logo on it. Others (including me) say that’s evidence that people care less about feature count than real-world usability.

I’m not pretending the iPhone is the perfect device. I’m just saying that a lot of the missing features people scream about, aren’t as necessary as many bloggers and blog commenters claim they are. Steve Ballmer literally laughed off the 1st-gen iPhone, claiming it was too expensive and missing too many features. I doubt he’s laughing today.

Apple, in general, has been pretty good about determining what features most people really need, and focusing their efforts in the right direction.

muyoso on June 9, 2008 at 6:04 PM

I’m not claiming those features aren’t useful; I’m claiming they aren’t as necessary as some people claim them are. My evidence? Sales. Would someone buy and continue to use a device that lacked a feature that was truly necessary to them? Of course not. If most people are loving their iPhones (90%+ approval rating) even without Feature X, it’s safe to assume (a) they never had a need for that feature, or (b) they realized they didn’t need that feature as much as they thought they did, and the rest of the user experience makes up for the lack.

I have no idea why Apple hasn’t implemented copy-and-paste. Certainly not a technical limitation. I’m guessing they haven’t found a way to implement it with the touch-screen, in a way that most people will be able to easily learn. Of all the missing features, that one I find the most inexplicable.

muyoso on June 9, 2008 at 6:11 PM

I hear you. These days, those are relatively basic features, and again, I’m not claiming this is the perfect device. I wasn’t there when Jobs & Co. froze the feature list, so I can only guess as to why they made the choices they did. I think it’s safe to say they wouldn’t deliberate leave out a feature that most people desire, unless it required a compromise that most people wouldn’t stomach.

But I could be wrong. For the last ten+ years, Apple’s mice and keyboards have been awful, and I’ve never understood why. Maybe some of their iPhone-related decisions fall into that category.

Ok, I give up. What IS 3G and MMS?

MMS is the ability to send video and pics in a text message. Something other than just plain text. I don’t use it that often.
3G is just a faster network. The higher bandwidth allows for stuff like faster brousing, faster streaming of video, music, etc, and…the ability to make video calls (something the 2nd gen iPhone will be without).

Ok, I give up. What IS 3G and MMS?

Mr. Excitement on June 9, 2008 at 6:26 PM

3G (3rd-generation) is basically faster data service — view web pages quicker, download e-mail quicker, etc.

MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is the 3G equivalent of SMS text messaging. With MMS, you can include pictures, sound, etc.

iPhone 3G doesn’t include MMS. But it won’t matter much; by July, when other companies start delivering instant-messaging apps for iPhone, you’ll be able to get the same functionality as MMS.

Splashman on June 9, 2008 at 6:40 PM

I don’t use it that often.

But I’m sure there are MANY people that do.

AllahPundit,

I just called AT&T. They just said the $30/month addition was false (and yes, I am a current iPhone user who will probably upgrade).

If you upgrade however, your contract will extend (by 2 years).

Darnell Clayton on June 9, 2008 at 6:55 PM

Gloria in excelsis Deo

“Glory to God in the highest”? Has the iPhone finally convinced you that there is a God, AP?

Beo on June 9, 2008 at 4:10 PM

Zackly what I was thinking. Has anyone else besides me noticed how much AP is using religious language lately? At least once a day, it seems, he’s going “good lord” (sic) or “in the name of god” (sic) or (today in the Headlines) “Hallelujah” and “good lord.” Et cetera.
Not intending this as an insult to any atheists at all. Just pointing out that am not sure AP understands that it’s, well, beginning to get insulting to us believers hearing an atheist every aingle day calling on the name of God or invoking faith phrases repeatedly to make some headline point.

The phrases have more serious uses IOW and it’s disrespectful to keep using them that way, especially so frequently. Am pretty sure AP isn’t bigoted against believers so, whazzup wit dat?

inviolet on June 9, 2008 at 6:56 PM

…so they decided to go halfway, cut the price way down to make it irresistible to suckers like me…

No, its becasue the iphone is a one-trick-pony next to the other enterprise level phones in the market (and in its price range), so they tart it up generate buzz on the interbutts and only do half of what the device needed to bilk the iloyal out of even more cash. Why do you think you pay for OSX service packs upgrades?

That being said I might buy one if it will do SMTP with Exchange servers better then the old one…

liquidflorian on June 9, 2008 at 6:58 PM

Is this only because you’re a current customer? Will 3G still be $30 a month + normal plan for new customers? My guess is that you talked to a clueless CSR. The plan was just announced today, how would they know?

liquidflorian on June 9, 2008 at 6:58 PM

It’s amazing, isn’t it, how many people are willing to lay out large sums of money for one-trick ponies, when it’s so perfectly obvious that there are enterprise-level phones available in the same price range? And even more amazing is how no other company can figure out how to make these incredibly popular one-trick ponies. Must be the Kool-Aid, hmm?

Yep, that’s it. And that explains the Apple sheeple laying out cash for “service packs”, too. It’s simply not possible they consider additional features and faster performance to be worth paying for.

Gotta be the Kool-Aid. Plus the RDF. Gotta be.

I think it depends on the area you’re in.

I had Verizon and was fine with them (though I hated their customer service for most of the 4 years I was with them).

I switched to AT&T when I bought my iPhone (and because after one particularly nasty Verizon customer service experience I had sworn to leave Verizon as soon as my plan was up) and I had better coverage in my area (Santa Monica, CA). My coworker switched from Tmobile to AT&T and noticed the same.

On the other hand, in NYC, when I had verizon, I got much better coverage than my roommate that had AT&T.

I would find someone in your area that uses AT&T and ask them how their reception is (probably a few someones just to make sure you get a decent set of data)….

Splashman on June 9, 2008 at 7:13 PM

No, I just don’t like how apple does business. I would figure they would do their customers a solid by giving them more then just a pretty (really really pretty) package. I’ve always hated that about apple, its the most annoying thing about them (besides how iSmug the iLoyal can be :P)…

Think of it like this man… I’d rather have an evening with Liz Miles than Kelly Pickler. You know what I’m saying? For the money I’d rather have the Curve (or a Q, or blackjack II, or a HTC Tilt/wizard/ad nausium) and some gigs of media on cards then an iPhone at this point.

my $.02

liquidflorian on June 9, 2008 at 8:08 PM

I dunno, I just don’t see what the fuss is all about. Of course, I haven’t had a telephone of any kind for almost ten years – and I haven’t missed it at all.

Anyway, who needs all those features? It’s just something else to do instead of the important things – like keeping your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering wheel.

Rusty Bill on June 9, 2008 at 8:30 PM

Apple early adopters’ loyalty in the face of that kind of repeated abuse is admirable. Meanwhile I’ve had 3G on my Blackjack for a year.

It is a sweet phone at the new price point, gotta hand them that.

DrSteve on June 9, 2008 at 8:34 PM

For the price of an iPhone, I can buy an Asus Eee or MSI Wind and baggy pants with really big cargo pockets. I think I actually TALK on my phone a few minutes per month–it’s the constant texting. And damn I’m slow!

Those things are awesome little machines.

Dude. That’s kinda sad.

malan89 on June 9, 2008 at 8:41 PM

It’s really more iPhone v1.5 than 2.0.

but don’t worry the apple idiots will run out and buy this..

And when apple comes out with the next one they will but that too..

Soon as these people realize that apple sucks they will be better off.

Chakra Hammer on June 9, 2008 at 9:34 PM

I agree that Apple sucks in the computer department. Macs suck, plain and simple. But, if you live in an area with good AT&T coverage, the iPhone wouldn’t be a bad option.

Thanks for the info. I’m pretty sure service is good in Dallas but I’ve got to find people in West Tx/NM to see how it holds up out there. I’m really fed-up with Sprint (and I really want that phone!)

LOL. I am so glad I’m not a PC user anymore. PC’s are only good for those with extensive computer knowledge, who can truly proof their computer from the viruses that attack it.

Macs are fantastic because you can be a newbie with computers, and you can get right going. They are much more user friendly, better looking, crash less, and are just an all around more pleasant experience. Whenever I talk to a friend who just bought one, the first thing I hear is how they don’t have to deal with freezing or crashing anymore.

Syncing is better, looks, user interface, everything is much better than PC.
