I wonder if Ms Blears has even heard of jizyah. After all, payments to the Mohamemdans (extremist Muslims) are simply viewed as proper jizyah coming in installments. If the installments are suddenly too small look for the action.

Having an official religion England is already a theocratic state, at least on paper. They ought to dump the COE and then go after all religious extremists according to their acts. Christianity is dead in Western Europe and the real danger is that radical Islam may take its place by importing and reproducing ‘believers.’ Governments should make certain that they are not paying the executioner for their own beheading by stopping all grants and tax advantages to all religious organizations.

Actually, after WW2, the Brits kicked out Churchill and really got down to imposing socialism. They didn’t really have a “golden era” like America did in the late 1940s and 1950s. For the Brits, their society has been going downhill since WW2.
