Obama: I shall be your president for two terms, oh yes

posted at 4:01 pm on June 6, 2008 by Allahpundit

Saw this live and it bugged the hell out of me, even though (a) it’s at least partly tongue in cheek and (b) candidates often refer to victory in inevitable, matter-of-fact terms (Hillary’s favorite formulation was “when I’m president”). It grates more than usual in Obama’s case, I think, for the same reason his cynical race speech was so infuriating and disappointing. He offers himself as the post-partisan healer, as somehow above this sort of petty jackassery, yet here he is hyperpresumptuously gloating about not just one term but two. I feel about him the way I do about the media sneering at bloggers: If you’re going to be a condescending douche, that’s fine, just be sure the condescension is justified.

Of course, if David Brody’s right about him possibly pulling 40% of evangelicals, it might very well be.

How do you get a second term if your first term is a disaster?

GarandFan on June 6, 2008 at 4:04 PM

It all makes sense now… Rezko bought the lot next door to Obama to rent out during the Olympics…

rw on June 6, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Yeah, but Rezko will still be in jail.

Obama’s either a McGovern or Carter. If he gets in, he’s Carter. If he doesn’t, he’s McGovern. Neither one had two terms.

amerpundit on June 6, 2008 at 4:08 PM

I can’t watch it. The only thing that makes me sicker than listening to yet another example of this ignorant tool’s arrogance is watching the cheering from all the mindless idiots who always surround him.

Chuck Schick on June 6, 2008 at 4:10 PM

I had reached my limit with Obama about two months ago. G-d help me if he gets elected. I will be unable to watch the news for four, er, eight years.

Obama will get 40 percent of evangelicals. However, that doesn’t refer to just Evangelical Christians, but also includes Evangelical Obamians. It’s currently the fastest-growing religion in American college towns.

Exurban Jon on June 6, 2008 at 4:14 PM

byteshredder on June 6, 2008 at 4:16 PM

I’m with you, AP. What bugs me most about Obama isn’t his policies and perspectives (I don’t like them, think they are correct, and I don’t want to see them enacted as President, but I can deal with them intellectually as a rational human being who understands that people have different opinions)… it’s the fact that he set the bar higher for himself by being ‘post-partisan’ and then acts just like all other politicians. If he hadn’t laid claim to this mantle of transcendence, I wouldn’t pay these silly things any mind. But he did, and now all these ‘typical politician’ things annoy me to no end. He’s a hack who has managed to fool people that he isn’t, no more and no less.

Wineaholic on June 6, 2008 at 4:17 PM

40% of evangelicals is ludicrous. You’d be hard pressed to find that many evangelicals that would look past the abortion issue, let alone all his other red flags.

I simply can’t listen to Obama anymore. It’s such an insult to the intelligence of a rational person to listen to nonsense like “change”, “hope”, and all the other grand platitudes and unfulfillable promises.

What kind of naive fool buys into this? Especially from a Chicago politician with ties to radicals and payoffs from a mobbed-up felon fixer? I just don’t get it- do people forget that someone runs on the “change” meme every single election, only to behave like every other politician once elected?

Hollowpoint on June 6, 2008 at 4:33 PM

An Obama presidency combined with a filibuster proof Democratic controlled US Senate and a strongly dominated Democrat controlled House frightens me. With Obama, combined with the current Democratic leadership, the United States could very well find itself a one-party ruled state by the end of his term. Here’s what I see happening fairly quickly in an Obama term:

1)Reintroduction and passage of the Fairness Doctrine with it being extended to include the Internet/Blogosphere–places such as this would be essentially closed down as the Democratic machine would gain complete or near-complete control over the flow of information.

2)Campaign finance “Reform” legislation that will make McCain-Feingold look positively laissez-faire in comparison.

3)The systematic degradation and stripping of our military–not just the physical structure of the military, but also its culture and ethos through the removal of ‘politically suspect’ officers and long-service NCO’s and the introduction of a wide range of progressive ‘reforms’.

4) The placing of strongly liberal activist judges in lower courts and eventually the US Supreme Court.

5) Environmental and economic regulations that will eventually lead to Maxine Walter’s “socialization”–her Freudian slip reveals her goals.

6) Efforts to eliminate home-schooling and alternative schooling in an effort to force children into public education so that they can be properly ‘indoctrinated’.

7) Gun control legislation.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. McCain might not be the best we can hope for–but examine the alternative…

I couldn’t believe my eyes or ears the other day, just about ever Fox reporter had a negative thing to say about McCain and gave kudos in some way to Obama. You touched on it with #5 but we will be hit with carbon taxes aimed to reduce global warming and will have new laws signed that will limit our freedoms. We will be penalized for driving too much or driving SUV’s. We think the CFL fixture mandate was bad; we will have to adapt our thermostats with governors that will not allow us to turn the a/c over 75 degrees in the summer. Picture California law-making on a nationwide basis-and don’t forget to see how it has impacted their citizens.

If he really thinks he can get 40% of Evangelical voters, wait until they find out that Obama is for infanticide. He doesn’t want doctors to save babies who survive abortions.

And what percent of the total voters is that?

I have yet to figure out just who are the ‘evangelicals’. They certainly aren’t Catholics, nutcase Pflueger being the exception. As far as religion growth, I believe I’ve seen figures that state amoung organized religions, the Catholics are gaining the most [many of the other Christain churchs are losing members].

Why, this is king Daley’s little baby why wouldn’t he pay his workers to go campaign for him and his will? Was Obama there too? He was advertised as going to be there. City workers getting paid and getting comp time to go to a olympic rally and just fill the seats so it looks like there are many supporters. Sent on department email too. Any news talking heads going to mention this? Doubt it, as usual the liberals will sweep this under the carpet so the sheep can go about their lives unaware of the corruption and use of their tax dollars as our budget spirals downward and taxes reach historic highs.
