Did the GOP use its prep time well?

The long, tough slog through the Democratic primaries gave the Republicans some time to strategize and plan for the general election, The Hill notes, and now their preparations will be put to the test. San Youngman reports that GOP researchers have plenty of data to use in their general-election contest against Barack Obama, some of which may have come from Hillary Clinton’s campaign and even her own mouth. The RNC rolls out a new website today to feature their efforts to defeat Obama and elect John McCain:

When Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) finally secured the Democratic nomination Tuesday night, his Republican opponents were fully prepared to welcome the Illinois senator to the general election.

Given Obama’s six-month, 54-contest, grueling up-and-down nomination battle against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), the desire for a breather would be understandable.

But the Republican National Committee (RNC) had already been piling up reams of opposition research, some of which it had already released, that it will use to define Obama before he has a chance to recover from the primaries. …

“Once he wheezed across the finish line, we were ready to help educate voters about Obama’s plans to raise taxes, cut troop funding, and negotiate with hostile leaders,” Amber Wilkerson, an RNC spokeswoman, said. “Thankfully, we only had to look to comments from Democrat leaders — including Hillary Clinton and John Edwards — to pose some important questions about Obama’s poor judgment and weak experience.”

Expect the GOP to hammer on Obama’s coast through the last three months of the campaign, mainly to boost morale among their own troops to show that Obama can be beaten. Hillary changed tactics at the beginning of March, becoming much more confrontational with Obama, and saw a great deal of success. She won almost all of the contests between March and June but could not overcome Obama’s large delegate lead in the end. The pressure from Hillary caused Obama to make several gaffes and retractions, continuing even to last night as Obama flip-flopped on Jerusalem.

The new RNC site, Meet Barack Obama, will serve as the repository of these kinds of stumbles and oppo research. It has the widget calculating the exact length of time since Obama’s last visit to Iraq, and spots for RNC videos, grass-roots organization, and highlighted issues that will undoubtedly update as events unfold. Right now they have a feature on the Rezko convictions and a site where visitors can leave questions for Barack Obama to answer. (I’m sure he’ll get right on that.)

It seems fairly impressive. The RNC didn’t sleepwalk through the last three months, and they put their enormous fundraising advantage to good use. Their $40 million cash-on-hand dwarfs the DNC’s $4.4 million, which won’t even cover the cost of their convention. The Democrats have known McCain as the nominee for three months and have yet to put together any coordinated effort against him. The GOP have the advantage early, and if they can maintain their fundraising advantage over the DNC, they may be able to keep it through the general election.

The RNC is a bunch of racists.

You can’t just make campaign commercials about Obama, he’s BLACK.

McCain has a lead on having paid, functioning state campaign chairman in swing states–I think it’s something like eight to four–a good sign of organization.

Jaibones on June 6, 2008 at 9:45 AM

No joke. The RNC must immediately pull any campaign ads that don’t portray Senator Barack Obama in a completely positive light.

Anything less would be racist because the man is black and that should be a good enough reason to be elected President.

We have partially fufilled MLK’s dream……

But can we we now complete it?

“People judged on the content of their character, not the color of their skin”

Obama’s character: Ayers, Wright, Pfleger, etc….
Obama’s character = Racist and Facist.

McCain’s character: Service, Honesty, (OK weak on a few issues immigration etc)
McCain character: honesty and strength

Will we realize MLK’s dream?

tottoritodd on June 6, 2008 at 9:47 AM

The Democrats have known McCain as the nominee for three months and have yet to put together any coordinated effort against him.

It doesn’t take much prep time to essentially wheel out the standard anti-Republican garbage — hates the poor, warmonger, bad for economy, something about oil companies. Since they want to paint a third Bush term, that cuts time further by allowing any criticisms of Bush to manifest. This election should theoretically be very cathartic for the Democrats (though if they lose I suspect true chaos will ensue).

Wineaholic on June 6, 2008 at 9:48 AM

You can still show her sitting on the NVA anti-aircraft guns while wearing a helmet.

Have pics of McCain as he returned from being a POW, while Obama is shown whining over his waffle.

Bishop on June 6, 2008 at 9:48 AM

I’ve been telling people this for months. Mike Duncan is in charge of the RNC now. I’ve known him for over 30 years and this guy knows what the hell he is doing. He may not be the greatest guy on TV (though I think he always holds his own against nutbag Howard Dean) but he has quietly put together a huge war chest and a top political staff for the fall. The RNC has raised so much money that it was able to send its top fundraiser (someone I have also known for 30 years) to the NRCC to help them raise money for the House races.

Money, organization, and smarts are not going to be a problem for the Republicans this year. They will run the same kind of devastating 72-hour GOTV program in the swing states that they did in 2004, which was so good that the Kerry campaign believed Bush stole the election in Ohio. They will be running attack ads on Obama all summer long.

rockmom on June 6, 2008 at 9:50 AM

Keep the veteran ads going, fund them to the hilt. That one with the female soldier asking Obama why he wouldn’t meet with Petraeus was devastating; Americans don’t like their soldiers being shat upon, those types of ads could really hurt Obama.

Don’t worry. You will. Depending on where you live, of course. This stuff won’t be taken nationwide, just targeted to places where it will have the most impact (i.e. all those Midwestern and Appalachian states that Hillary won, and maybe Missouri.)

rockmom on June 6, 2008 at 9:53 AM

I have a good strategy for the RNC to use. Stop selecting Democrats disguised as Republicans for their favorite as nominee.

Vaporman87 on June 6, 2008 at 9:55 AM

A possible swing vote: Gays and Lesbians – Why?

McCain: We are not ready for gay marriage

Obamambi: I will meet with Amededinut – “there are no gays in Iran” Columbia University If there are my goverment has stoned them to death!

Seems like an easy choice to me

There are endless possibilties if we have the guts to use them

tottoritodd on June 6, 2008 at 9:57 AM

Good gravy. While the “Yeah, but have you seen the other guy…” type of political campaigning works somewhat, you still have to sell your guy.

Why buy John McCain?

Is it his pro-business/job-growth message?

His take-no-prisoners America-first stance?

His stalwart commitment to reduce the size of government, get out of the way of the individual, and protect our freedoms, such as the First Amendment?

You gotta sell the product first.

I wouldn’t want to be working at the RNC. They have an almost impossible task. There is so little enthusiasm for McCain. Without that enthusiasm, most folks won’t even bother to vote. Thats the monumental task the GOP has. I don’t think they have a clue as to how to get former GOP voters to turn out. Not a clue.

Lets just sit back and watch them squirm. They’ll go through the traditional/conventional motions of a campaign. (all they know how to do) The people that are principled and don’t operate off of emotion will turn out as usual & vote McCain. Question is, will that be enough for a win? We all know it will not. Here’s a proposal:

Everyone knows Digg’s voting system, where I can give content a thumbs-up (+1) or a thumbs-down (-1). So how about this…

In the election, I can vote for a candidate (+1), or I can vote against a candidate (-1).

The candidate with the most votes to get to >40% wins.

If neither does it, they can tweak their message, nominate a new candidate, but the current president doesn’t get replaced until a candidate gets more than 40%.

That might fix this lack of emphasis on actually selling the candidate.

Right now would be a good time to go the site Ed linked to and maybe ask Obama a question or two rather than do the old tired boring predictable McCain bashing.

Terrye on June 6, 2008 at 10:18 AM

The GOP have the advantage early, and if they can maintain their fundraising advantage over the DNC, they may be able to keep it through the general election.

The GOP is at a huge fundraising disadvantage. True, the DNC doesn’t have much money, but Obama does! And, since the Democrats are the party that’s considered likely to win, they’re going to get a lot of corporate contributions and lobbyist money that used to go to Republicans. Obama has us seriously out-gunned, and I hope McCain has the energy and stamina to fight for the next 5 months to win this.

tottoritodd on June 6, 2008 at 10:00 AM

Yeah, you’re a big tent party all right. Conservatives can either vote for a bad candidate or shut up. Any conservative commentator on National Review or talk radio gets savaged every time they bring up an issue that makes McCain look bad (ok, pretty much any issue except Iraq). Every little brownshirt lemming wannabe on this site spouts off the same rhetoric; Limbaugh is irrelevant; National Review is irrelevant. Yeah, the GOP would have done so well without those 2 things in the past. The GOP would be nothing but a country club footnote without the conservative movement. Big Tent all right; as long as you’re a pragmatist, choking on your own vomit, or a brownshirted little cheerleader ready to pounce on those who don’t toe the line.

Only if the crybabies let it happen.

Squid Shark on June 6, 2008 at 9:44 AM

If Senator Backstabber can’t pull a victory out against the empty suit, it’s nobody’s fault but his own. The whole point of a campaign is to persuade. McCain has had months to persuade those who he’s alienated over the past 8 years. All he’s done is alienate them further; either from their own principles, or from voting for him. Even if McCain wins, the GOP coalition is either going to be damaged or dead, mainly because of people like you. You’ll have 4 years to enjoy yourself Squid..then, the voters will get another crack at McCain..and the likely damage he’ll have done is going to probably end with him out on his a**. The bad thing for the GOP is we have no one in the wings that will be able to pick up the pieces, and we’ll probably have a democrat until the GOP picks up the pieces or coalesces into something else. Just remember, if in your pitiful little analysis that a McCain loss in 08 is the fault of crybabies, the economic disaster of the McCain presidency is going to be the fault of cheerleaders like you pulling for whatever breathing object that happens to have an ‘R’ next to its name. Own it.

The conflict raging in the Republican Party is not “your fault” or “my fault”. It’s the fault of corruption in the Republican Party leadership. Both the MSM and McCain did some dishonest and unethical things take him from fourth place finish in Iowa to MSM-declared “presumptive nominee” 33 days later. It was a blitzkrieg that happened so fast that people (including myself) didn’t start figuring out what had happened until it appeared to be too late (but it’s not too late, we won’t have a nominee until the convention, and things can still change between now and then).

The NRA has a large war chest and some potentially devastating ads as their hole cards. Especially the one that has been tested showing Obama’s own handwriting under an anti-gun statement, on a form he claims he never saw.

These ads will be run in those areas most likely to be populated by those bitter people who are clinging to their guns and their bibles. That would just happen to also be those states with a long and revered hunting ethic: such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc.

These will make a difference.

The problem is, most Americans don’t love God.

jgapinoy on June 6, 2008 at 10:18 AM

Not a problem. An opportunity.

It’s never been about the numbers and power of man.

It’s always been about the power of God.

Red Pill on June 6, 2008 at 10:49 AM

Was the little boy David more powerful than the giant Goliath?

No.

But what did David do? Did he cower like the rest of the armies of Israel?

And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.”

When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

1 Samuel 17:10-11

No. David understood the power of his God, and his authority as a believer.

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

1 Samuel 17:45

Red Pill on June 6, 2008 at 10:49 AM

And why did David fight Goliath? To prove to others that God is who He says He is, and will do what He says He will do.

This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands.

1 Samuel 17:46

Red Pill on June 6, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Everyone knows that David killed Goliath with a sling and a stone, but do you know the rest of the story?

So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it.
And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

1 Samuel 17:50-51, 54

Most people think the story of David and Goliath is a cute little fairy to tell children.

It’s not.

It’s a true story, and it’s intended for adults, not children. (How many beheading stories do you read to your kids before they go to bed?)

It’s a story that is meant to encourage adults who cower in fear and embolden them to stand strong in their faith and belief in the living God, Creator of Heaven and Earth.

I have never voted for a perfect candidate for President. Because… I have never run for the office. (What? You don’t think I should rule the world? Well then you’re clearly an idiot and responsible for the destruction of the Republican Party.)

Seriously though, when in life are we faced with an important decision to which there’s a flawlessly ideal solution? If a problem is difficult, we can either run away shrieking like children or confront it like adults and do the best we can with what we have.

McCain wasn’t my first choice but he sure is now. I intend to do what I can to get him elected and I appreciate the efforts of all others who are doing the same.

Lockstein13 on June 6, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Everyone knows that David killed Goliath with a sling and a stone

Actually, I just learned something myself…

The Bible does not say that David killed Goliath with the stone. It says he “prevailed over” him (knocked him unconscious?) with a sling and a stone, and then killed Goliath with Goliath’s own sword.

But there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his [Goliath's] sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him

Does the quality of a nominated candidate have anything – anything at all – to do with whether that candidate wins or loses? I’m just wondering, because today (unlike a few months ago) no one seems to believe that the candidate himself has some measure of responsibility for winning or losing.

Is McCain just a false construct that bears no responsibility or accountability for his candidacy, whatsoever?*

Perhaps today’s ‘modern’ Presidential campaign is merely a measure of how many sheep one can scare-monger and bully into doing things The Party’s way…rather than an election of a LEADER from among the People, who actually REPRESENTS the People he’s asking to support him. There’s a shocker of an idea.

In McCain’s case, he’s not even bothering to try and get support from conservatives – he clearly doesn’t want to represent THEM. Nor does he need Them – as some here at HA have gleefully pointed out again and again. Thus, it obviously won’t be conservatives’ fault that McCain won’t get elected. Following the ‘reasoning’ that constituencies are at fault, since the candidate bears no responsibility for his own electability*, it will be the fault of the moderate Independents and Democrats – McCain’s favored demographic – that he loses. They will have failed to appropriately support his bid as their leader.

— — —

*unless you’re an also-ran Republican candidate. I remember several of them being held strictly accountable for their own unelectability. Funny how that works when it’s convenient.

I was repeatedly reminded by the likes of people such as you that it was for the good of the party that we vote for him. I sucked it up and did it. Now that the RINO’s picked their guy, the whining begins. When we parrot the same line we got in 2000 and 2004 we are tolk we are liberals and traitors.

jgapinoy on June 6, 2008 at 10:18 AM

Go read the story of Gideon’s army.

Gideon thought his army was too small, and God told him to make it smaller.

And the LORD said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

But the LORD said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.”

So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water.

Then the LORD said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place.”

Judges 7:2-7

We don’t need numbers.

We need men of God who are willing to be bold in their faith, boldly declare the Word of God, and take action.

There’s already a modern-day Gideon’s army.

a “RNC” favorite does not compel voters to cast their vote for anyone but who the voters decide they want to back.

Nothing more.

I think that you are upset that the RNC didn’t pick the candidate that you voted for as their favorite, and now you blame the RNC that your candidate lost.

NARRATION:

Martin Luther King, Jr. said that he hoped for a day when Americans would be judged “not by the color of their skin” but “by the content of their character”.

Here are some of characters Senator Obama has surrounded himself with.

Show: WRIGHT, AYERS, DOHRN, PFLEGER, FARRAKAHN, ad nauseam.

And here’re some of their content:

WRIGHT: “No-no-no! Goddamn America!”

PFLEGER: “America is the greatest sin against God.”

A man is known by the company he keeps.

Keep Obama from bringing this kind of CHANGE to the Oval Office.

Squid Shark on June 6, 2008 at 11:23 AM

This ain’t American Idol.

It’s not my goal to be entertaining.

It’s my goal to stand for God and fight for my country.

If men and women in our military are willing to die for our country, those of us not in the military should be willing to live for our country.

Obama and Clinton are Socialist disciples of Saul Alinsky.

We all agree that Obama or Clinton would be horrible for our country (well almost all of us…Allahpundit seems to be in the tank for Hillary – go figure).

Many of us agree that McCain would also be horrible for our country. Whether he is intentionally Socialist or whether he is just a “useful idiot”, I don’t know for sure. But I do know that many of the words and actions of John McCain are in full agreement with the Socialist game plan. If amnesty passes, that benefits the Socialists. Why do you think you saw so many Che shirts at those immigration rallies? Those rallies were organized on May 1st (big surprise…that’s the Communist May Day) and organized by “Community Organizers”…you know, people who have the job that Barack Obama used to do and that Hillary Clinton was invited to do (by Saul Alinsky himself!)

The bottom line is that John McCain cannot be trusted with immigration or AGW, both of which are key objectives of the Socialists. McCain cannot be the next POTUS because he would give the Socialists exactly what they want. There’s also the chance that he’d appoint more Souters to the SCOTUS. Sure, he promises strict constructionists, but he also promised to build the fence. Promises, promises. There’s a certain truth to the “Bush-McCain” story line, but it’s not “McCain is running for George W. Bush’s Third Term”, it’s “McCain is running for George H. W. Bush’s Second Term”.

Think about it. It’s more true than you realize.

Mike Huckabee will be the next President of the United States.
