Evidently this is important enough to warrant not only multiple stories on the wires but a follow-up question during a sitdown with the anchor of the NBC evening news. What’s the fascination? Is it evidence of cultural “authenticity”? Some sort of secret Camelot handshake, the significance of which is lost on young-ish types like me but known only too well to nostalgic geriatric Democrats? Or is it just cute and endearing, and therefore to be laid in front of the public at every opportunity by a media with love in its eyes and a song in its heart?
Rumor has it that it was followed by an obligatory ass pat. Well played, sir.

All I know is, Obama is greater than Jesus, Buddah, Allah and Xenu all rolled into one, then multiplied by a million. The media told me so and they would never lie. Or, if by some accident they do lie, it doesn’t matter because their liberal intent is always purely good so it’s best to always go along with them no matter what.

Ciannaky on June 5, 2008 at 4:36 PM
Ugh, I actually saw this the other day and said aloud in my best Simon Cowell voice: “That was atrocious.”
Honestly, am I the only one who gets the vibe that before going on stage Obama said “Okay now Michelle, most of our base is white college kids who are voting for me simply because they think it makes them cool. To prove my street cred to what are known as “tha brothas” I’m going to need you to give me one of these things. I’m not sure what it means, but I’m told it’s very hip.”
Seriously, I don’t know exactly how it came about, but I can’t help but feel like it’s an insulting attempt to connect with regular blacks. Just like when he or Hillary put on the accent, etc.
RightWinged on June 5, 2008 at 4:44 PM
There is nothing in that video which would lead one to believe there was a planning session like the way you imagined. As another poster pointed out one went high one went low and then they just ended up doing a dap.
None of us “regular blacks” were insulted by it. Thanks for checking, though.

She looked completely startled, like she didn’t know how to respond, and only barely refrained from pushing him away in front of the entire nation. Totally cringe-worthy moment, seared into my political memory for all time. It served as a metaphor for his entire political career for quite some time.

Obama has my vote, he is obviously a guy just like me.
Ok, he has millions of dollars, attended Princeton, lives in a mansion, rides in limos, shops at expensive grocery stores and hangs out with racists and terrorists and dislikes waffles….but other than that he is just a guy trying to make his way in the world.

Well you should have been. Just like you should be when Obama tries to “talk black”, claim Selma marches led to his birth, or his wife claims that she doesn’t worry specifically about assassination because he could be shot pumping gas just because he’s a black man.
BTW, the analysis of “one going high and one low” to debunk my point/half-joke is silly. First of all, it would only prove what an out of touch elitist he is, that they couldn’t even get that little move right. But if you’ll notice I went on with a lengthy theoretical quote, obviously intended in large part to be a joke, but hitting the serious point of how contrived and calculated every move is. He’s proven himself to be a liar and the “old” type of politician time and time again over the past few months, and like the Clintons, I now can’t put anything past them. I suspect there was at least some discussion, joking or otherwise, about displaying an oh so hip “fist bump” on stage.
RightWinged on June 5, 2008 at 5:31 PM
A chest bump, then we have something.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on June 5, 2008 at 5:37 PM
Is it possible that these two married adults simply love each other and were caught up in a rare genuine instant between lovers?
WTF is wrong with that? I’m sorry, but this is not about politics. It’s about love. They seem like a good strong couple…despite being left of Gore Vidal. It would be an overwhelming and personally moving moment for anyone.
They are the first political couple I have ever heard to refer going on a date together. They are that sweet, annoying couple.
I support happy marriages. I see no reason to attack theirs.

Alert: OT - TANGENT GONE WILD
It’s the total resistance that many Republicans have to seeing blacks as “normal” that makes many blacks suspicious of Republicans. Sometimes, people are just being people, not black people. If your perception is so squelched, how can your assessment be fair? Capisce? Capezio?
It sucks that the border issue is causing the same issues with regards to Repubs and Hispanics. We can bitch and moan and demonize Al Sharpton et al.
It’s a self-admitted tragedy to say this. But…I think we really need some sort of a racial-platform that is honest about Republican values, somewhat self-depricating about our lack our minority-outreach and fact-filled so Dems can’t lie about us anymore.

As long as he’s “big pimpin” it doesn’t matter if he has his “stunna shades” on or not.

RC, I don’t think people are attacking the Obamas’ marriage or doubting their love - at least I’m not. Most of us also aren’t making it into a race thing. I was just joking with 12thman about that. Instead, I think most of us on this thread are making fun of the MSM’s orgasmic response to a silly little fist-tap and how they made it into “news” by drawing attention to it the way they did.

Oh, there’s the victim card I love so much - “Guess I’m too ignorant”. Sadly, you are pretty ignorant because you continue to miss the point. I’m well aware that the fist bump isn’t only a black thing… in fact I do it with various people occasionally, sometimes as it relates to inside jokes that have nothing to do with race at all. My point was that Obama has been desperate to prove that he’s authentically black enough (which everyone knows, though one could hold the opinion that this isn’t what is happening here). Given the dishonesty of the man and his campaign and his disgusting lies and pandering - that, although smoother (mainly because of the media’s love for him really), rivals that of the Clintons or Kerry - anything he does is now suspect to me. I view this as his attempt at “hipness”. Perhaps it’s just for general hipness, not black hipness in this case, but in my mind the odds are 50/50. As I said, he’s shown in the past how desperate he is to prove he’s “black”, so I don’t put this past him.
Now, back to the point… Your insinuation that I think only blacks do this. If you’re basing this on my hypothetical (and partly joking) guess on the Obama comment/plan to do this, you’re ignoring that those are what I’m imagining HIS words would be, not my own. He’s an elitist turd and he’s desperate to try to connect to these lower class people (again, in HIS mind) so I can totally see a meeting where they calculate some stuff he can do to get down to their level.
RightWinged on June 5, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Completely Staged. Nice puff piece.
And Mocking Hillary in the process!
Remember Michelle and “This isn’t helping my children!”?
Michelle was concerned that Hillary was going to “steal” the nomination that they “stole” from Hillary.
But Barack “Pulled it off” and Michelle stopped berating him behind closed doors.
This cutesy fist pump was not some “intimate tender personal moment”. It was staged for all the media to see and write about.
