ABC: Obama’s flip-flop on Iran
posted at 1:45 pm on June 5, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Now that Barack Obama has turned his attention to the general election, he needs to move away from his MoveOn-endorsed positions in order to make a claim among centrists and independent voters. Yesterday he tried doing exactly that on Iran, and ABC noticed the shift. After spending most of the last eighteen months criticizing the Bush administration’s efforts on Iran, he has transformed into a hawk that now espouses the same policies as the current White House:
In his speech Wednesday before the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, Obama sounded a bit like the more hawkish officials in the Bush administration.
He said the military option is “on the table” for dealing with Iran’s nuclear program, and in stark contrast to earlier statements, he said he would meet with Iranian leaders “if and only if it can advance the interest of the United States.”
Obama’s tone was strikingly different from it has been in the past.
During a debate last summer, he said he would be willing to meet with Iranian leaders and other American adversaries “without preconditions” during the first year of his presidency. Today, he made it clear that we should not expect a President Obama to be sitting down with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad any time soon:
“[A]s president of the United States, I would be willing to lead tough and principled diplomacy with the appropriate Iranian leaders at a time and place of my choosing if and only if it can advance the interest of the United States. That is my position. I want to be absolutely clear.”
The Obama campaign insisted that Obama has not changed his position, but ABC quotes him verbatim from last July’s YouTube debate to demonstrate the extent of his shift. He made clear his opposition to the notion that direct, head-of-state level talks with terrorist nations endorsed and encouraged their terrorism. Now he has adopted that premise in arguing against talks prior to the Iranians suspending their uranium enrichment.
As ABC points out, that is also the Bush administration position. Condoleezza Rice has publicly stated that the US would be willing to meet at the highest levels if the Iranians verifiably suspended uranium enrichment and stopped funding terrorists. This White House held ambassador-level talks with Iran about the security issues in Iraq even without those preconditions, talks which the Iranians refused to continue. Obama’s arguing for the Bush policy that he claims has gone so wrong.
Readers of Hot Air will not be surprised that Obama has flip-flopped on Iran. They may be surprised to see ABC or any of the American media report on it.

Indeed.
Shocked, in my case.

More evidence of the purposeful destruction by liberals of our education system.
“Uhh, where’s that Iran place?”

Really? Why start now?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 5, 2008 at 1:53 PM
I give 48 hours before the picture in that article goes viral. A sniper target that close to Obama’s head? OBVIOUSLY ABC KNOWS SOMETHING!!!
MadisonConservative on June 5, 2008 at 1:54 PM
Some things are so obvious, even the blind recognize it.
For every one flip, the MSM will miss 20 flops.
right2bright on June 5, 2008 at 1:54 PM
Sort of surprised. This flip-flop is so blatant now that they almost can’t ignore it (as much as they’d like to). However, I doubt MSNBC (mission control for the Obama camp) will do its best to ignore or explain how the message has been consistent – and that the rest of the media is showing itself to be racists by attacking him.

Down, and to the left. Down, and to the left.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 5, 2008 at 1:56 PM
Divisive.

Not at all. Only reason it’s worth a comment is because a prominent member of the fifth column reported it. Hard to describe my reaction right now. “Shocked” is a start, thanks, Hawkins1701.

Someone wrote yesterday that the MSM HATED the Clintons for “forcing” them to cover-up all of the Clinton’s shenanigans over the years, and for squandering the media’s goodwill in the public’s eye, and were now gleeful to be able to slam them openly.
If that’s to be believed, this might be their way of telling Obama they will only go so far to cover his idiocy, and will not risk the very little that is left of their reputations.

Uh oh. I’m afraid some hapless graphic artist at ABC News is about to lose their job.
While the illustration that accompanies the article would be perfectly acceptable if it was any other candidate or official pictured, I’m afraid this will be another lesson in the double standard that applies where Obama’s involved.

Um, aren’t we negotiating alongside Britain and France over Iran’s nuclear program. And throwing the IAEA in there to boot? Or does The Obamassiah favor a unilateral approach to foreign policy, as opposed to multilateral such as Bush is doing with both Iran and North Korea?
rbj on June 5, 2008 at 2:04 PM
Not surprised. ABC is a Clinton mouthpiece. And remember, Clinton hasn’t conceded yet…
Now when Olbermann and MSNBC start pointing it out, then I’ll take notice.

Anyone that can’t see through this lying Marxist dolt deserves him. For him, “empty suit” is a compliment.

Of Course, ABC is racist for pointing this out….

McCain needs to publicly acknowledge Obama’s willingness to play Bush in a surrogate third term.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 5, 2008 at 2:07 PM
In his speech before AIPAC he also stated that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard would be designated a terrorist organization, something he voted against last fall.
I caught that while I was washing dishes with the TV on in the other room. Guess ABC and all the rest of the MSM missed that.
Rod on June 5, 2008 at 2:08 PM
In the grand scheme, even this ‘mention’ doesn’t mean squat. As has happened in the past when these ‘blips’ show up on the MSM radar… it gets mentioned once or twice and then fades to oblivion.
That is so when it comes up from a conservative source in the future, they have the fall-back position of saying “We reported on it” so as to not look biased.
They will not ask him directly about the flip-flop. Liberals will not care.
Independents will forget about it.
If it were McCain – it’d be headline material and lead-off stories on MSNBC, CNN, CBS, ABC & NBC.
Move along – nothing to see here, folks.
jrlingreenbay on June 5, 2008 at 2:11 PM
ABC, or at least Jake Tapper, hasn’t been letting Obama get away with much. Now, if MSNBC had broadcast this article, that would have been a shock.
Quisp on June 5, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Looks like NBC, the National Barack Channel, will have to step in and clarify what B. O sounded like what he said here, but what he really meant to say was something else.
pilamaye on June 5, 2008 at 2:17 PM
That’s not the MSM I knew!
backwoods conservative on June 5, 2008 at 2:21 PM
Yep, ABC wrote an article..
But I don’t see in as a HEADLINE on their site…
Now, I do see a JUNIOR Senators berateing of a SENIOR Senator as a headline…

Baby steps?

What’s the matter with those ABC guys that they can’t work up a little tingle for Obama?! They better get some of whatever flavor kool-aid Crissy & Olby are chugging, or come the cornonation, they’re not gonna get to kiss his ring.
drunyan8315 on June 5, 2008 at 2:33 PM
They write stuff on-line to cover their butts, but won’t put it in TV. They know that so many Dem voters don’t independently search for news– they turn on the TV, if that.
JiangxiDad on June 5, 2008 at 2:35 PM

What threat? By the time this guy gets finished with cutting the military, there won’t be enough remaining to threaten the Boy Scouts, much less anyone else.

Obama: I was for bombing Iran after I was against it.
Does this remind anyone of another junior Senator and Presidential candidate?
Let’s see if the RNC comes out with a new ad comparing Obama’s old and new positions on Iran.
Steve Z on June 5, 2008 at 2:39 PM
Oh how delicious it would be if the media began to crucify Obama for softening some liberal stances now that he has to.
Will never happen, but dare to dream!

It is good to see abc questioning him. Also see the bottom 10 vp list for obama from ace.
I, however, am still skeptical. I can’t get over the feeling these stories are essentially innoculations against a later charge of media bias. Closer to the election, if someone complains, they can say we ran those stories and they are now old news.

baldilocks on June 5, 2008 at 3:20 PM
This is only the first of what is likely to be countless opportunities to hammer the puckered-up left when they’re too stupid to keep their stories straight. McCain should not be allowed to miss an opportunity to keep all these boneheaded flip-flops in the mix for the entire campaign. A couple sound bites every 1-2 days will keep it fresh. Then bury Obama (and company) with it all in the end.
.
We’re reaching a critical stage that if we don’t get pissed enough or scared enough thinking of Obama, Clinton, and the other Clinton sitting around the White House with a liberally controlled congress and senate, our lives are over.
.
What we need is for all liberals to go away. Go tax themselves and play green all they want. The rest of us conservatives will just hang out here, drill for our own oil, and live happily ever after as the true super power nation who can flip off the rest of the world because we don’t need them anymore. Then watch them come crawling to us instead of complaining.
.
Too cynical? I paid $4.20/gallon for gas this morning, and the only reason that’s happening is because the liberal ass clenchers in Washington will always block our ability to harvest our own oil of which we have enough to last us several hundred years. Oh yeah, and consider the fact that we’re being gouged for gas when we’re the country providing the refining oil for others.

QUESTION: How long before Hussein’s camp states, “what he meant to say was…”?
madmonkphotog on June 5, 2008 at 3:24 PM
In itself, this won’t change anyone’s votes.
If it signifies a shift in the willingness of the media to be critical of him, it is important. But I have my doubts about that.

This clown doesn’t even ask ‘how high’ before jumping for anyone or anything that help him moveon. He has no shame and, as long as he gets away with it, will continue to lie, flip-flop and adjust his positions.

ABC slips every now and then, that way they can maintain their “impartial” reporting stance. Don’t look for it to happen again any time soon.
