Since I’m an Iowa native it really saddens me to see how much destruction took place in my home state. KCRG.com has another video that’s from a surveilance cam across the street from a house and shows the house being completely destroyed. It reminds you of just how small we really are on this planet.

Back in the late 70′s an F5 tornado hit downtown Wichita Falls, TX late in the afternoon. As it was approaching a bank all the employees and customers hid in the bank safe and locked the safe behind them. The building was totally destroyed but the folks in the bank vault survived. Then again, a German exchange pilot at Shepard AFB was on leave that day and when the tornado was heading straight for his apartment, he ran into the laundry room and crawled into a dryer (he took great pictures of the storm as it flattened a middle school across the street that was being built) he lived with just some black and blue marks on his legs. The worst thing is to be in your car and get cought by the storm – it’s a death sentence.

in Oklahoma there are many tornadoes every year, but a few are the big ones F3 and F4’s I don’t have recollection of any F5’s but I’m sure they’ve been around…

watching the video I naturally think “what would I have done?” and I just can’t say you could have done much of anything but kiss it goodbye…

About 4 or 5 years ago, we spent the night in the basement watching the weather channel as three of them converged on us from the southwest. One of them was a F-5 that completely destroyed Hallam, NE, ran along the road a mile north of us, then veered northeast to destroy a large high school and many homes. I don’t know where the other 2 went, but we didn’t get much damage. Electricity was out, and we had 8 inches of rain that night. It went on till 4:00 AM. I went over to help with the cleanup in Hallam and got my first taste of FEMA. After a day of them, we told them to get out, and we’d take care of our own. Total assholes.

being from Oklahoma, this is a common thing, the house I grew up in… located in Pryor, Oklahoma. had a foundation in the pasture behind it, nestled against a nominal hill… this foundation had pipes and nails sticking out, twisted, reaching for the sky, a small reminder of what is left when a big one comes through… in Oklahoma there are many tornadoes every year, but a few are the big ones F3 and F4′s I don’t have recollection of any F5′s but I’m sure they’ve been around…
