Democratic strategist Bob Beckel appeared on Fox & Friends this morning and dropped a bombshell. Beckel says he believes a “shoe will drop” as early as tomorrow, and that it involves Michelle Obama. This will, he says, be “significantly” bigger than the earlier college-thesis issue, which implies that the supposed “whitey” video exists. Here’s Beckel sounding strangely out of breath while delivering this “news”:
Once again, we hear how this is a Republican dirty trick, this time from Beckel, but that makes no sense. If the Republicans had the video, they wouldn’t have even intimated it exists until after Obama had the nomination. All due respect to Operation Chaos, but why lay this out when the Democrats can still nominate someone who would therefore be the stronger general-election candidate? They would wait until after the convention, maybe all the way to late October, before springing it.
No, this sounds much more like a Clinton operation, both in timing and in style. I suspect that the video doesn’t even exist, but that the rumor of it is intended to worry the superdelegates enough to support Hillary. Supposedly the video contains footage of Michelle Obama and Louis Farrakhan at a public conference, with Mrs. Obama using the term “whitey” in a pejorative context. In a search yesterday of the archives of the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times, I find no mention of any such conference, let alone the use of that kind of provocative rhetoric by the wife of a politician with presidential aspirations. Even for a complacent media — and that really doesn’t describe the Tribune or the Sun-Times with respect to Barack Obama — this would have made news.
Even if it did exist, its publication in the next few days doesn’t help McCain. Who benefits from it? The woman who wants the Democratic nomination, that’s who. If that shoe drops, it will have stiletto heels — if the video exists at all, which I’m sure it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, the rumor helps Hillary, too … but it won’t be enough.

Of course it’s a Republican dirty trick. Hill is part of the VRWC now.

You wonder why a guy like Beckel would traffic in such a rumor.
If it’s a Republican thing, why bring it up at all?
drjohn on June 3, 2008 at 11:16 AM
If it doesn’t exist, it makes the Obama’s look like victims of a conspiracy. Not sure how that helps Hillary.
JiangxiDad on June 3, 2008 at 11:16 AM
I agree, it doesn’t exist, and it’s a Democratic Dirty Trick, done by the Clintons, and put on the Blogosphere by their Moron-lackey-liar-fraud-Nutbag-in-charge, one Larry C. Johnson, who since he stated this rumor weeks ago, has been trying to tie the supposed “tape” to the Republicans and Republican Billionaire Richard Scaife.
To show you how clueless Johnson is, when he started this rumor, he was trying to imply Scaife was behind it, and he doesn’t even realize that Scaife has now in fact, Enforsed HILLARY!
He’s such a tool, and this tape still doesn’t exist, despite Larry “the Fool” Johnson trying to maintain it does, and to blame it on the “Republicans”.
Dale in Atlanta on June 3, 2008 at 11:17 AM
If this tape exists does Obama divorce Michelle and claim he’s only divorcing her so that the press will stop harassing her?
NotCoach on June 3, 2008 at 11:18 AM
That’s MR. Whitey to you, Michelle.
Cicero43 on June 3, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Hillary supporters are trying to say the VWRC has something terrible on Obama or the wife to try to scare people into voting for her. She may have something nasty that she hasn’t used yet, but she may not have anything.
If she drops some kind of crap trying to see if it will stick, she will do anything she can to try to establish that republicans did it with the “republican attack machine.”
I still don’t think there is any tape worth watching, and conservatives and the GOP would do well to stay as far away from this whole thing as possible. Let Hillary play her games all by herself. No guilt by assoication for me, thanks very much.
funky chicken on June 3, 2008 at 11:20 AM
Obama will explain it, if it exists, just as he has every other outrageous gaffe and incredible folly, then the Dems will nod at the sage-ness of his words and condemn the racism of the right for even mentioning it.
Nothing will change.
Obama is teflon wrappen in Crisco swathed in Vaseline.

entagor on June 3, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Thing is, such a statement wouldn’t seem out of character for her, would it? The fact that it is so plausible is what’s worrying the Dems.
stonemeister on June 3, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Nothing would surprise me coming out of that church. It’s like a bad Dave Chappelle skit. Obama has never been vetted by a tough campaign until he went up against Hillary. But, if it exists, why would the Clintons hold it back until now? Did they want Obama for Veep, so they could claim not only the first woman prez, but the coat tails that brought us the first black prez? We’ll never go broke underestimating the narcissism of the Clintons, but if the tape exists, there’s something grassy knolly going on.

If it’s real, do you think the Dems might try a Torricelli/Lautenberg switch up?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 3, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Why is Bob Beckel the one who is sputtering about the existence of this alleged video? You’d think it would be Limbaugh who would breaking this one first!
pilamaye on June 3, 2008 at 11:24 AM
This is nothing-Beckel is as accomplished a liar as any Clinton. It strikes me more as a trial balloon, testing the air currents to see which way they blow, checking how shaky, how paranoid the Obama camp may be after so many high profile denouncements and evasions. Hillary is showing the club held in her tender claw, trying to make the Supers nervous about Obamas next big problem.
Doug on June 3, 2008 at 11:24 AM
I’m with you Ed, it’s a Democratic influenced, Clinton trick.
You don’t spring this on America UNTIL Barack is in FULL campaign Mode. And near the end, such as the Dems pulled with Bush’s DUI from 25 years previously.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 3, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Typical democrat ploy. They throw the preemptive strike out there pointing to the Republicans, then the slip a bomb into the media. The lemmings on the left will be crying about the ‘Republican Dirty Tricks’ and feeling sorry for Teflon-Obama.
It’s too bad the Republican Political Machine isn’t half as devious as the dems claim it to be.

If there is a whitey vid, it’s obviously a Clinton campaign op. Can’t wait for their denials after the clip is posted on YouTube or whatever.
Years from now, decades from now, some second place candidate will be asked why he persists and won’t drop out since he’s so far behind and can’t possibly accrue the needed delegates, and he’ll say, “It was June when the Whitey Tape was leaked, so, you never know what’s going to happen. So I’m in for the long haul.”
Akzed on June 3, 2008 at 11:28 AM
It’s more than likely just a rumor to instill worry in Dems, all while placing blame on the GOP.
However, Johnson does link this. Apparently Rev. Willie Barrow is a superdelegate and long-time friend of Obama. She’s also a long-time friend of Farrakhan.
amerpundit on June 3, 2008 at 11:29 AM
With Beckel pushing the story? It makes it a “bombbeck”.

You always have to imagine all scenarios. You can even say, What if it’s a trick to make conservatives overreach on Mz. Obama so that the Fauxbama Campaign can malign the opposition base for rumor mongering.
Yet here we have Beckel the John, who claims to detest rumor mongering, mongering rumors of the highest shoe-dropping order. It’s like putting on a coat made of dung and saying, “lookie, now I’m protected from dung.”
Western_Civ on June 3, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Beckel is such a self righteous pimp.
Hening on June 3, 2008 at 11:31 AM
“IF” the tape exists, my thoughts are that the reason they will release it now instead of later, is to inflict severe damage while the Jeremiah Wright and Fpleger issues are still fresh. The reasoning might be that Obamah via his smooth talking over the next few months might build such a lead over McCain, that even the release of the tape may not be enough to cause him to lose the election. As mentioned by others, he would play the race card, the republican attack machine card, the vast right wing conspiracy card, and of course, the why are you all pickin’ on my wife card card. The voters are so gullible and with the help of the main stream media, the damage may be minimal. Whoever has the tape may have decided to go for the political kill right now.
evenkeel on June 3, 2008 at 11:32 AM
Rush Limbaugh speculated yesterday that Pfleger was a set-up–a way for Obama to quit the church and blame it on a white Catholic. Maybe the tape is a set-up too. To show just how racist and how far the Obama opposition will go to demomize a black guy in America today.
I’m no longer susceptible to that kind of blackmail, but many might be.
JiangxiDad on June 3, 2008 at 11:32 AM
If the tape exists, she will be honored for her forthrightness. She will have just “stated what many have whispered”, and the black community (and academic elitists) will embrace. Other words, no real effect on their base…but devastating to the undecided.
Funny thing, there is enough on Obama’s background to severely wound him. You don’t need speculation.
right2bright on June 3, 2008 at 11:33 AM
that should be the tape rumor is a set-up
JiangxiDad on June 3, 2008 at 11:33 AM
It’s a good point.
Race is not and should not be an issue, save for the Wright/Meeks/Phleger hyperbole.
Obama’s judgment is lacking, and since that’s all he’s got, he’s got nothing.
There is no good reason to vote for him, unless you want Jimmy Carter II.
drjohn on June 3, 2008 at 11:36 AM
In my opinion if the tape exists, then it’s the republicans who have it (if Hillary had it she would have used it by now). They’d release it tomorrow so that everyone assumes it was Hillary who did it.
Another reason to release it now is that it could not explosive enough to be a campaign killer for Obama (the GOP would rather run against him than Hillary), but still sufficiently damaging that it causes some super delegates switch to Hillary, lets her keep campaigning until the convention and causes overall chaos to break out in the Democratic party (but again, not enough chaos that it completely derails Obama’s nomination chances)
SDnocoen on June 3, 2008 at 11:36 AM
THIS MAKES SENSE
.
Hillary sets up a “scheduled media event”….apparently to drop out of race.
.
Then,
.
Michelle Obama video gets out just hours prior to Hillary’s “event”.
.
Hillary cancels “event”.
.
Then,
.
She has the perfect alibi.
She can claim deniability in knowing about the Obama video as she “was going to conceed”.
.
.
She jumps in as the savior to the crushing defeat of Democrats in November. SuperD’s will bow down and thank her for her courage.
.
ooooh those evil republicans…….

Just the fact that people can believe that MO would say something like that should give the democrates a cold dread up their spines. If the MSM and high place people do not even question the fact that she “could” have said it, that speaks volumes of the uphill battle that is coming for the dems. This will be an election that defines for the majority what it means to be an americian. Is America the greatest country in the world or is it like BHO, MO and the libs say an evil country that has done unspeakable evil things thru out history.

JiangxiDad on June 3, 2008 at 11:40 AM
I just can’t believe Michelle Obama is stupid enough to get on a stage, at any time in recent history (past seven years), with Louis Farrakhan and start ranting about “whitey.” She and Barack Obama are both radical lefties, to be sure, but she’s led a very un-radical life: Princeton, Harvard, Sidley & Austin (big white shoe Chicago law firm), and then U. Chicago’s hospital system.
You don’t get so publicly unhinged like Wright, Moss, Ayers, Pfleger, etc., unless you live your life in a leftist echo chamber. Barack arguably lived in that echo chamber; Michelle didn’t.

1. If Bob Beckel sounds out of breath, he’s probably very nervous.
2. Why is the reference to Operation Chaos relevant and/or necessary? OC has always been about creating chaos, not determining the nominee. And it’s certainly not about releasing Michelle Obama videos.
A certain sement of the blogosphere likes to frequently preface their comments with, “I’ve never really been a fan of Rush Limbaugh,” and so on and so forth about whatever they don’t like. Fine. But at least do him the honor of not tacking his name onto something he has nothing to do with, i.e.

One of the political contributions the Clinton machine has made to this campaign is the justification of smears and rumors by stating that the Republicans would use the information later. I other words, by pointing out the weakensses in the Obama camp early, the Clintons are doing the Democrats a favor by attacking Obama. They have taken the smear campaign/October surprise to a new level, blaming the opposition for their own sleaziness. Bob Beckel was the Gore operative calling Bush electors to try and get them to switch to Bush after the election (and before the electoral college voted.) When called on it he made some lame excuse that he was just trying to confirm their loyalty and give them a chance to switch if they wanted.

Okay, I’ll play Devil’s Advocate. It exists. Barry will virtually declare tonight. After the polls close the supers to put him over the top. But Hillary won’t officially put her campaign on hold until late this week. Republican super-villians in their underground lair will release the video tomorrow between the super surge to Barry but before Hil’s concession. This will create maximum damage to the democratic process, not just the candidates. The supers won’t be able to jump off the Obama train even as it heads toward a cliff. But Hil, revitalized by the Michelle rant and the astounding poll numbers afterward, will not be able to give in. Thus, BHO is the fatally damaged nominee and HRC will drive on to the convention because she, and everyone, will know that Barry is doomed.
The Republican super-villians want total anarchy at the Dem convention, with the Dems caught between a loser nominee they can’t dump and an ambitous pol they can’t ignore.

The term “whitey” will not be appreciated by truck loads of Americans, not because of it’s sinister insinuation, but because it will reveal once more the soul of the man through his woman. It may be the 1000th cut.
The rumor is meant to stick it to the Republicans, so snow white comes out clean in the end and the GOP is accused of taking the nomination away from BO not Hill.

As a life-long Illinois resident who is a newspaper junky, let me set you straight. The Libune and the Dumb Times were in the tank for Obama before a tank was even built.
The Libune unsealed previously sealed divorce records of Obama’s primary opponent, knocking him out of the race. Then they waited until the general election cycle to unseal his gen-el opponent’s sealed divorce records, knocking him out of the race.
Before Obama even gave his keynote speech, both papers were positively slobbering over him, calling him “Presidential material” and “future President” (and “rock star” and “super star”). Near daily full-color flattering photos of Obama, accompanied by sycophantic, syrupy praise for the empty suit.
No, don’t tell me that the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun Times are not complacent in Obama’s political rise. They started it!

85% of the Democrats have grown to hate her, including some of these super delegates, their dislike for her mirrors the so called Vast Right Wing conspiracy of the 90s.
Her supporters are nothing to the Dems, they could care less about any voters who lean slightly Right, as her supporters do. They are willing to allow them to leave the party and vote for McCain.
No super delegates are going to hand her anything, they want her gone, history.
I agree with Dick Morris and most pundits, he’s got the nomination.

B-I-N-G-O! Excellent post and you got it 100% right.
No super delegate will side with the Clintons at this juncture, to do so would be political suicide, she’s done, he’s it.
For once Dick Morris and his wife got it or is getting it right.

Nice statistic but it does not hold up under the scrutiny of counting votes. She has received at least half of the votes in the primaries. In fact, she has recieved more votes than any Democrat in primary election history.
The only poll that matters is the one where people vote on primary or election day.

Produce the damn tape already, I’m dying to see it.

Yeah, but some of those primaries were way back when. My parent’s neighbors on their coop board voted for her back in our primary here in NY and now they hate her and regret it. My mother told me they were all discussing it at their last board meeting.
My parent’s friends in Boca the same.
Their primary season was/is long winded and people didn’t like the way she and Bill handled themselves along the way.
AprilOrit on June 3, 2008 at 1:28 PM
And the only reason she received more votes in history is because of this particular primary season and people’s feeling about the current administration.
And I am not so sure she has the popular vote, she is only counting primaries and ignoring caucases.
I know one thing, her camp spins more stories than any Democrat in primary election history.

Please, a rumor of a tape isn’t going to get one Super to go for Hillary. If it was coming from Republicans, it wouldn’t even be hinted at until Sept/Oct.
