Are you ready for California governor Mitt Romney?

posted at 8:53 pm on June 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

Ahnuld’s out in 2010, leaving him just enough time to (a) establish residency, (b) win the governorship(?), and (c) ditch it two years later for a quixotic, second, even more Reaganesque run at the presidency that’s destined to fail when the GOP faithful finally embrace Huckabee’s special brand of Christian collectivism. Exit question: Is this some ham-handed ploy to ingratiate himself to Californians now in hope of being named VP and stealing the state for McCain? A ham-handed ploy for the gubernatorial race? Or a ham-handed ploy to buy himself some sweet-ass beachfront property in southern Cali so he can kick it wholesome-style among L.A.’s dissolute glitterati? It’s bound to end in disappointment, Mitt!

If Mitt can bring businesses back to California; beat back the unions that control the California legislative body; clean-up the northern bay area (lock up that POS mayor in SF, along with every single person attached to the scumbag); lower state taxes; clean-up the corruption going on with the state lottery; rid the state of corrupt branches of big brother such as EDD and CAL-OSCA…

If Mitt can accomplish such miracles, then I will consider him a Saint sent to California by God himself!

A little bit of info for the Huckabee supporter that will descend on this thread with Mitt disses, not even understanding AP’s sarcasm (at least I really hope you’re being sarcastic):
La Jolla is a few miles north of San Diego. It’s about a two hours drive from LA…with no traffic. And it’s in a congressional district that Republican Brian Bilbray won with 55%…and he’s the successor to Republican Duke Cunningham, whose Wikipedia article’s biggest section is entitled “Scandals and Corruption”. Pretty conservative in Suburban San Diego (it’s also brought us Duncan Hunter). I doubt Mitt will be kickin’ it with Lindsey and Paris.

malan89 on June 3, 2008 at 9:12 PM

He would be a lot better than that creature we have as governor now.

Rose on June 3, 2008 at 9:12 PM

I think it’s highly unlikely that the GOP will embrace the Hucksters collectivism (and collectivism it is). In any case, I think this is the more likely scenario:

If Romney was to become McCain’s choice as running mate, would a California residence finally give the GOP at least a shot at winning the state’s 55 electoral votes?

Or at a minimum, force the Democratic ticket to play some expensive defense on that front instead of taking the Golden State for granted as usual?

Buy Danish on June 3, 2008 at 9:16 PM

I was trying to make the point that you can’t really get much better than 55% in a district for a member of the same party of a guy known for tax evasion and fraud.

One more thing…Mitt should NOT run for Gov. The only reason we’ve got the Governator is because he’s a moderate, ex-movie star. Mitt would definitely lose. He should only run if the Bay Area libs get their way and San Francisco secedes to create it’s own city-wide socialist commune. Then he’d have a shot.

La Jolla is a few miles north of San Diego.

There’s also a Mormon temple in La Jolla. It’s a nice area, close to some of his kids and grandkids. I don’t see much of a political angle to it.

It’s just another house – Mitt collects them like I collect iPods.

If he buys houses in all 57 states, though, there may be a pattern.

sulla on June 3, 2008 at 9:53 PM

Truth about California…

Millions of really great people reside there; smart, classy, selfless people by the hundreds of thousands. Damn shame the state has headed hard-left for the past few decades. No stopping this dynamic now; it must run it’s course. Elections mean nothing, as judges and politicians simply go around the will of the people.

Mitt has giant elephant balls if he decides to take on this beast of an example of raw evil disguised as Liberalism.

Keemo on June 3, 2008 at 9:54 PM

Lest we forget, California gave use Ronald Reagan. There are a number of conservatives in CA, the problem has been organization. I would love to see Mitt in CA for 8 years if he were to do that. He would have more political clout than VP.

EJDolbow on June 3, 2008 at 9:55 PM

He is not eligible to be governor of California for the 2010 election.

You have to be a resident of California for 5 years prior to the election for governor.

2014 is available. But then he may want to consider becoming a citizen of Mexico as California may no longer be considered part of the United States as we know it.

Actually California has a history of electing Republican Governors. Arnold ran as a conservative/moderate R, or he probably wouldn’t have been elected. It’s only the gerrymandered legislature that is a full blow politburo.

Mitt would have a decent shot. Look at the competition – Antonio “MECHA” Villareconquista.

He ran as a RINO and governs as such; mostly he got elected because of star power and Gray Davis being so very weak.

The chances of a pro-life, anti-gay marriage, pro-Iraq war conservative Republican (as Mitt attempted to portray himself) getting elected as CA governor in the near future is next to nill.

EJDolbow on June 3, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Exactly. Mitt is a family man first, and a politico second. You cynics may scoff at him, but he’s a much nicer guy then most politicians. I personally was on the fence between Mitt and Fred until the South Carolina primary, I was longing for Fred but just didn’t see him as viable with his late start and less then aggressive campaign.

Mitt may be a little overly slick, but he’s got quality underneath that shine. Not at all like Clinton who was scum with a bit of shine on top.

So I don’t see why Mitt’s detractors feel the need to keep mocking him now that he’s out of the presidential race. He’s a good man, and would make a good neighbor. Maybe in your opinion he wouldn’t be a great president, but that doesn’t preclude the former.

Squid Shark on June 3, 2008 at 10:55 PM

Huckabee and his supportes are the reason we have been stuck with McCain in the first place. The religious right blindly backed Huckabee to the point that Mitt wasnt even on the ballot by the time the primary made it to me in Texas. There’s more to an election than the right to life… but some people can’t get past that single issue to see the bigger picture and issues we face as a country.

We need a president that understands the economy. The war is incredibly important for us to address and finish, but it can be handled by a president with minimal or even no true military experience (eg. GWB). Our country and government have so many legitimate business, organizational and financial issues that we need someone that knows how to create organizational change, not a leader that is a stubborn maverick.

Am I the only one who remembers that Schwarzenegger tried to start governing as a –fiscally at least– conservative? He definitely challenged the Democrat establishment in a ballsy way, by introducing a raft of ballot initiatives that threatened to cut off their power (gerrymandered redistricting reform, for one).

Unfortunately, the unions and liberals succeeded in painting him as an uncaring and callous. His polls sank like a rock. Every one of the initiatives went down to flaming wrecks. The politics of it was, from the Republican side of it, as amateurish and naive as Obama’s world view is.

After that debacle, Schwarzie saw the light on the way back to Sacramento from Damascus and made nice with the Dems. I thought he just decided to govern as a kind of “mayor” of California, representing what he percieves as a liberal electorate. But he seems to actually believe these global warming fear-mongers.

I remember. And I weep for the Governator that was. Now he’s just another girly-man Kennedy.
