The final meltdown: Billy Jeff loses it over Vanity Fair’s article

posted at 8:12 pm on June 2, 2008 by Allahpundit

“There seems to be an abiding anger in him,” one of his senior aides told Todd Purdum. Good lord, does there ever. Not to begrudge the man a little righteous outrage at being the target of a hit piece, but the detail here about him refusing to let go of Mayhill Fowler’s hand is the creepy final act to a campaign performance that passed “bizarre” a long time ago. He’s like Orson Welles here tearing apart the bedroom at the end of Citizen Kane in frustration that no one’s left to admire his greatness.

Which isn’t to suggest that what he has to say is untrue.

Tightly gripping this reporter’s hand and refusing to let go, Clinton heatedly denounced the writer, who is currently married to former Clinton White House Press Secretary, Dee Dee Myers.

“[He's] sleazy,” he said referring to Purdum. “He’s a really dishonest reporter. And one of our guys talked to him . . . And I haven’t read [the article]. There’s just five or six blatant lies in there. But he’s a real slimy guy,” the former President said.

When I reminded him that Purdum was married to his former press spokesperson Myers, Clinton was undeterred.

“That’s all right– he’s still a scumbag,” Clinton said…

“You know he didn’t use a single name, cite a single source in all those things he said.. It’s just slimy. It’s part of the national media’s attempt to nail Hillary for Obama. It’s the most biased press coverage in history. It’s another way of helping Obama. They had all these people standing up in this church cheering, calling Hillary a white racist, and he didn’t do anything about it. The first day he said ‘Ah, ah, ah well.’ Because that’s what they do– he gets other people to slime her. So then they saw the movie they thought this is a great ad for John McCain–maybe I better quit the church. It’s all politics. It’s all about the bias of the media for Obama. Don’t think anything about it.”

“But I’m telling ya, all it’s doing is driving her supporters further and further away– because they know exactly what it is– this has been the most rigged coverage in modern history– and the guy ought to be ashamed of himself. But he has no shame. It isn’t the first dishonest piece he’s written about me or her.”

I don’t think Pfleger went off on Hillary at Obama’s behest but some of his other cronies surely have. The audio’s coming, supposedly; I’ll update when it’s available. Exit question: Man, Mayhill Fowler sure has a knack for being in the right place at the right time, huh?

How ironic that McClellan is on O’Reilly as I type this. This VF article isn’t any better than that book in my opinion.

SouthernGent on June 2, 2008 at 8:16 PM

Now BJ is getting a little taste of what it’s like to have the media against you, totally in the tank for the other guy. He’s never had to deal with that before, has he? I doubt it’ll give him much sympathy for Republicans, but it’s nice to know that the shoe’s on the other foot for a little while. This is what it feels like to be thrown under the bus by the media, Bill!

Democrats and liberals accusing the media of bias.

Billy Jeff accusing someone else of being a sleazy scumbag.

Obama accusing small-town America of being haters.

It’s part of the national media’s attempt to nail Hillary for Obama. It’s the most biased press coverage in history. It’s another way of helping Obama.

This is the bit I find most interesting. Here we have the (formerly) most powerful American Democrat around essentially admitting to liberal media bias. Yes, I know, he’s just saying it’s favoring Obama over Hillary, but that is exactly WHY it is favoring him over Hillary, because he is and is viewed as the further left of the two. Not that there ever was one, but the debate is over folks – the most recent Democrat POTUS has essentially just admitted that the media is in the tank for liberals.

Unlike Teddy, Bill is on his own.
He screwed up big-time, and getting him off the hook took a lot of political juice. Now that the Dems are on a come-back, and any Clinton is a dead Clinton.
So Hillary is paying her husband’s dues (again!).
I admire her guts. We’ll see if and/or how she concedes.

The thing about Clinton is, if you asked him now how he feels about being treated the way Republican pols have for years, or if he now understands what people like Bush 41 or Bob Dole went through — heck, if you asked him if he could sympathize with what Joe Lieberman went through two years ago — he’d tell you they were treated with perfect fairness by the media, and that he and Hillary are the only ones who the press has ever treated in this horrific fashion.

And the really sad part would be, he believes it.

I found another article r

elated to B.J. Clinton’s scum-baggery:

Vanity Fair: Bill Clinton Consumed by “Cavernous Narcissism”

Fox News
June 1, 2008

Editor’s note: Of course Bilderberg selected presidents are narcissistic, and maybe Bubba is more so than the others. But the article misses a larger, far more important point: Bill Clinton is a war criminal, guilty of imposing a brutal medieval siege on Iraq and killing 500,000 Iraqi children.
The Office of President Bill Clinton responded with fury Sunday to a Vanity Fair article that attacks the former president and suggests he is out of control personally and consumed by “cavernous narcissism.”

The article, which hits newsstands next week, was distributed to the media and online in advance of its publication. The author, Todd Purdum, has covered Clinton for 16 years. He is married to former Clinton Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers.
“A tawdry, anonymous quote-filled attack piece, published in this month’s Vanity Fair magazine regarding former President Bill Clinton repeats many past attacks on him, ignores much prior positive coverage, includes numerous errors, and ultimately breaks no new ground. It is, in short, journalism of personal destruction at its worst,” reads a statement from the office of the president.

“Though (Purdum) researched the piece for several months, his first contact with President Clinton’s office was several weeks before he closed the story. Most revealing is one simple fact: President Clinton has helped save the lives of 1,300,000 people in his post-presidency, and Vanity Fair couldn’t find time to talk to even one of them for comment,” the statement continues, along with several pages of argument refuting the article’s main points.

Purdum suggests that in the years since Clinton left the White House $12 million in debt, he has been caught up in a world of rich friends, adoring fans and borrowed jets. The article quotes one former aide calling Clinton’s current associates like billionaire Ron Burkle and movie producer Stephen Bing “radioactive.”

The aide says Clinton’s associates are compounding worries that the 61-year-old former president is running with a fast crowd

One source close to Clinton even suggested he has never been the same since quadruple bypass surgery in 2004.

“There’s an anger in him that I find surprising. There seems to be an abiding anger in him, and not just the summer thunderstorms of old. He has been called into question repeatedly by top staff,” a former aide to both Bill and Hillary Clinton told Purdum.

More devastating is Purdum’s claim that about 18 months ago, a former Clinton aide tried an intervention with the former president because he was hearing so many complaints about inappropriate behavior. According to the article, the aide believed “Clinton was apparently seeing a lot of women on the road.”

Purdum wrote that the aide was rebuffed by advisers close to Clinton, never got to speak directly with him, and the attempted intervention was not well received by either Clinton.

The article also includes questions about the millions Bill Clinton has made since leaving office and notes the troubles for Hillary Clinton’s campaign attributed to him.

here is the V.F. article:
http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2008/07/clinton200807

RMC1618 on June 2, 2008 at 9:32 PM

freevillage happens to be correct here. The average 2004 divorce rate (per 1000) for states Bush carried in 2004 is higher; what’s more, the same divorce rate is strongly positively correlated with Bush’s margin of victory as a percent of total votes cast.

Those are obviously univariate analyses of something causally complex, but the essential point is correct.

Mote, beam, etc.
