I was in spelling bees as a kid, but never got as far as this one– I had my street cred to preserve. If I had been thrown a goof word like that I could have looked both cool and smart.

That kid (and eventual winner) was impressive. Frickin’ ALL the kids were impressive.

I have 300 channels of TV to choose from at home when I watch. But an extremely very few shows are ever on worth watching. The Spelling Bee is actually fun to watch with your kids/family and you soon find yourself rooting for the stressed out but very brave kids (whether silently or aloud). The kids are fantastic and they’re also great examples for other kids.

It’s simply good clean fun.

My family favorite as far as regularly aired shows goes is AFV.

I love the spelling bees (and the geography bees, and the math and science contests, etc.). It’s great to see kids who are studying and working hard to achieve, and it’s also great to see their families in the audience cheering them on.

If the MSM would show more of this, and less of the Britney/Lindsay/Paris dramas, this country would be much better off.

That videa cracked me up, especially when the kid was relieved he wasn’t spelling that word. Reminds me of a few months ago, my husband and I were talking about Iraq in the car with the kids in the back. I said something about Shiites, and my daughter goes ‘Mommy, it’s pronounced sh!t, not she-ite.’ I about died.

Smart kid, though.

“Popery” was actually an accusation that was thrown at Christians during the Reformation who stayed loyal to the Catholic Church. It was sort of like skullduggery against the new order.

When I was in 7th grade at the state contest, the word I failed on was maraschino, partly because the person proctoring the test didn’t know how to pronounce it. I spelled it “marischino”.

…and she was my English teacher.

I saw it live, it was a beautiful thing. We all thought the judge said the other thing too. You can hear the crowd titter when the judge said it, and then laugh our loud when the kid incredulously said it back.
