Sounds like Webster’s isn’t the only dictionary he studied. I guess that’s how you get to be the best.

Excellent. I’m sure his parents are proud of him.

paul006 on June 1, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Those guys are a bunch of numnahs.

stonemeister on June 1, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Numnahs sounds like what happens when a male rides a camel too long.
I wonder if he knows what a nimno is.

Christine on June 1, 2008 at 1:30 PM

LOL!

>:D

Chakra Hammer on June 1, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Classic. Kid’s quick on his feet.

VolMagic on June 1, 2008 at 1:35 PM

I don’t care who you are, that’s funny.

Funny, but not as funny as the kid who had to spell “negus.”

alflauren on June 1, 2008 at 1:44 PM

Bill Clinton will have numnahs if this election is lost

malkinmania on June 1, 2008 at 1:49 PM

I saw it live, it was a beautiful thing. We all thought the judge said the other thing too. You can hear the crowd titter when the judge said it, and then laugh our loud when the kid incredulously said it back.

I like him. He’s going places.

vonspringer on June 1, 2008 at 1:55 PM

Yeah, I heard it the wrong way initially too.

Allahpundit on June 1, 2008 at 1:57 PM

“Numbnut? O-b-a-m-a.”

Akzed on June 1, 2008 at 2:01 PM

Hey, when did they start teaching military jargon in the public schools?

Good for him!

Sailfish on June 1, 2008 at 2:04 PM

Good for him.

When I was in 7th grade at the state contest, the word I failed on was maraschino, partly because the person proctoring the test didn’t know how to pronounce it. I spelled it “marischino”.

…and she was my English teacher.

91Veteran on June 1, 2008 at 2:12 PM

The word that got me was potpourri. I was thinking of the place they keep Popes, a “popery.”

Yeah, it was 4th grade.

misterpeasea on June 1, 2008 at 2:25 PM

Drunk Report on June 1, 2008 at 3:01 PM

Drunk Report on June 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Wasn’t there a video of a fat big boned kid singing this song?

Corsair on June 1, 2008 at 3:05 PM

“His numnah isn’t up yet”

Why couldn’t that universal studios fire have happened there to take out that hack commenter.

muyoso on June 1, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Numnah = saddle blanket

misterpeasea on June 1, 2008 at 2:25 PM

“Popery” was actually an accusation that was thrown at Christians during the Reformation who stayed loyal to the Catholic Church. It was sort of like skullduggery against the new order.

That videa cracked me up, especially when the kid was relieved he wasn’t spelling that word. Reminds me of a few months ago, my husband and I were talking about Iraq in the car with the kids in the back. I said something about Shiites, and my daughter goes ‘Mommy, it’s pronounced sh!t, not she-ite.’ I about died.

Smart kid, though.

Chakra Hammer on June 1, 2008 at 4:25 PM

Numnah?

Why does the song Dragostea din tei run through my mind?

Sekhmet on June 1, 2008 at 5:18 PM

I love the spelling bees (and the geography bees, and the math and science contests, etc.). It’s great to see kids who are studying and working hard to achieve, and it’s also great to see their families in the audience cheering them on.

If the MSM would show more of this, and less of the Britney/Lindsay/Paris dramas, this country would be much better off.

AZCoyote on June 1, 2008 at 5:54 PM

If English was good enough for Jesus then it’s good enough for me.

TheSitRep on June 1, 2008 at 6:47 PM

Ride on a horse too long and I think either word will be getting used..

Reaps on June 1, 2008 at 7:54 PM

I have 300 channels of TV to choose from at home when I watch. But an extremely very few shows are ever on worth watching. The Spelling Bee is actually fun to watch with your kids/family and you soon find yourself rooting for the stressed out but very brave kids (whether silently or aloud). The kids are fantastic and they’re also great examples for other kids.

It’s simply good clean fun.

My family favorite as far as regularly aired shows goes is AFV.

SilverStar830 on June 1, 2008 at 8:04 PM

That kid (and eventual winner) was impressive. Frickin’ ALL the kids were impressive.

Rise up Beachwood, OH- be proud of those who represent! Your boy may not have taken it this year- but he was damn solid on some tough, tough words.

;)

ChipDWood on June 1, 2008 at 8:25 PM

Anyone have the stat showing how many of the contestants were home schooled?

This young man should not work at Subway with all of the other numbnuts.

MSGTAS on June 2, 2008 at 9:25 AM

What bet did these 2 douches lose to be the color commentary for a childrens spelling bee?

Chuck Schick on June 2, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Little smart @ss! I love him.
I was in spelling bees as a kid, but never got as far as this one– I had my street cred to preserve. If I had been thrown a goof word like that I could have looked both cool and smart.
