Pfleger on Hillary and McCain: “They got some old weak preacher”; Update: Pfleger posts apology

posted at 2:13 pm on June 1, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Not “they have some old weak preacher,” as that would be insufficiently “authentic.” They got some old weak preacher, which is doubtless true if you define weakness as being unappreciative of the glorious chicken-roostin’ righteousness of jumbo jets crashing into the Trade Center. Definitely listen to the audio on this one (starting around 15:00), as Tapper’s transcript omits Pfleger mocking the simplistic message which he suspects Hillary’s and McCain’s pastors are delivering — i.e. that “Jesus loves you.”

Do note that this was recorded last week, before Reverend Vanilla Ice, as JWF dubs him, had his miraculous epiphany that his rhetoric might be unhelpful to Obama’s campaign. He apologized again today to his parishioners. Exit question: What other pearls of wisdom, I wonder, are lurking in his audio archives?

Update: Via Gateway Pundit, here’s Reverend Ice’s apology for the earlier Hillary mockery. He’s really sorry — sorry that your priorities are so screwy that you care about this more than earthquakes, sorry that you can’t distinguish a “dramatization” from mockery, sorry that you think the YouTube stuff is representative of his views even though of course Wright’s YT soundbites were in fact representative of his, and sorry that you don’t recognize his striving to be an “agent of reconciliation,” like when he’s threatening to snuff people out. Oh, and we also find out that this has been more painful for him than when his foster son was murdered. Yes, really.

Any word of a book deal? And when is he scheduled to appear on Larry King?

It takes about 30 seconds to determine where this foul mouthed bigot and his buddy Wright stand, yet it too Obama over 20 years . . . I would say that fact alone puts Obama far outside the intellectual giants of our time.

rplat on June 1, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Can’t play the file, maybe it’s Vista.

The main problem with this church and its sputniks is that they ignore the Bible. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female [and were he around today the apostle would no doubt add] there is neither black nor white: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus,” Gal. 3:28.

Not only his. Yesterday was the beginning of much nailbiting. It’s going to be a long, hot summer.

HAHA.

I love it. I knew they were never going to shut up, they can’t it is simply imposible fopr them to do so…

Poor Obama so in need of an identity, so in need of political capital, so short sighted in his rush to power.

I havent been to church in a while but uhhh… is this crap common? When I went it was very nice parables and sermons about helping your fellow man and being a good person.

No wonder religion gets a bad name now, geez. Between these nuts and the Swaggarts and Robertsons and whomever else I’m forgetting it’s quite a cast of characters.

Kinda funny that it will be on the left this time though.

I thought that was what the main message in church was supposed to be.
Pfleger and Wright are not “preachers,” they are race-baiters with theology degrees.

You’re telling me the folks in the church don’t realize how condescending this man is to them? He’s mocking them in public in front of their own faces. They’re either stupid, have no self-esteem, or both!

SouthernGent on June 1, 2008 at 2:39 PM

btw: Fox is now mainstreaming via Geraldo via Robert Stone the Michelle-sez-Whitey video rumor. The not-very-dependable but always-certain Larry Johnson promises big news by manana.

Pleger said he’s received more than 3,000 angry and threatening e-mails since he was a guest preacher at Trinity United Church of Christ last Sunday.

Texas Gal on June 1, 2008 at 2:46 PM

SouthernGent on June 1, 2008

I vote for “stupid.” Chicago public schools don’t teach much, but I’m sure “self-esteem” is near the top of that very short list.

BuzzCrutcher on June 1, 2008 at 2:46 PM

Joel Osteen may be heretical in some ways, but he has never wished his country damned by God. Big HUGE difference.

Jimmy Swaggart never damned America.
Pat Robertson has warned America, but never damned America.

The list could go on.

Most churches are NOT like this. Most don’t even mention politicians – they usually just preach about qualities to look for, what our nation needs, but do not endorse specific candidates.

That Obama has never probably visited another church to figure it out – even black churches, says a lot about his closed mind.

Mommynator on June 1, 2008 at 2:49 PM

I am betting that that Pfleger couldn’t pass a drug test if he had a week to study for it.

How pathetic.

What’s so funny is that this condescending, self-parodising, minstrel show cartoon character was doing just fine before he was exposed. I sometimes suspect that there might be good money in the race baiting business..and I do see a lot of comedy sketch potential in ‘Reverend Vanilla Ice’…too bad the MSM and SNL won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole.

AUINSC on June 1, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Obama couldn’t appease his Church from spewing hateful venom after giving them HUGE Sums of money, how can he appease Iran that is hell bent on the destruction of Israel?

Either Obama is ineffective in his appeasement strategies or he agrees with the vile statements of his Church that sat idle by listening to for twenty years and that he was funding with large amounts of cash.

We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian… Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain “true to our native land,” the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.

United Church of Christ Statement of Faith in the form of a doxology

They sure make it clear that they are a black church, don’t they? Nothing wrong with that, that’s all well, fine and good in my opinion. But they are openly are engages in every kind of leftist politics, which is fine too. I strongly believe churches should instruct their congregations on what the church doctrine is for the current state of political affairs. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion, even though I vehemently disagree with leftist politics.

But this is what irritates me, you can bet it this was a predominantly white church as immersed in politics as this black church, the IRS would be knocking on their door telling them to shut-up or lose their tax exempt status. Somehow this never seems to happen when the church is advancing leftist policies or the church is predominantly black or some other minority. I wonder why?

Maxx on June 1, 2008 at 3:32 PM

This really could be the worst case of black-wannabeism in a middle-aged man I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, it seems as though Rev. Pfleger’s guiding influence in his effort to imbibe the black experience was a boxed DVD set of “Sanford and Son: The Complete Series”.

Such a deep, well-constructed critique…
To reduce ourselves to this sort of attack is pretty embarrassing and counterproductive. Can we do no better than this? There are so many reasonable critiques of the guy, from a Biblical standpoint, from an American History standpoint, or even from the standpoint of his inability to form a valid argument in terms of logical form (i.e. without the use of practically every fallacy in the book.)
We, as conservatives, are better than this.

lorien1973 on June 1, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Maxx,

Just to completely savor the full flavor and impact of the TUCC statement of faith, it’s fun to play a little thought experiment…Just substitute the words ‘White’ for ‘Black’ and ‘European’ for ‘African’ and re-read it…see, nothing racist there at all, we can all breath easy now.

AUINSC on June 1, 2008 at 3:39 PM

If Joel Osteen, a 45 year-old guy who can bench-press twice his bodyweight, is “old and weak”, well there ya go.

BTW, I’m pretty sure by “weak,” Pleger meant ” doesn’t inspire plenty of good ol’ racial hatred” vs. physical strength.

Rhinoboy on June 1, 2008 at 3:42 PM

For all this talk of Vanilla Ice-Hole and Wright being “tough” preachers, they don’t seem to be very tough on the people they are preaching to. It’s always THOSE OTHER PEOPLE who need to ask forgiveness, give up their 401-K, whatever. Nothing about the people in the audience needing to accept Jesus, repent of their sins, etc.

Even when I briefly went to a pretty conservative Church, any admonitions were always directed at the congregation. WE shouldn’t get abortions, WE shouldn’t bone dudes up the ass, do drugs, gamble, whatever.

BuzzCrutcher on June 1, 2008 at 3:43 PM

From Pfleger’s official statement on the Saint Sabina website:

It is painful that as a result of this video over 3,000 email of hate, threats, and name calling, who go so far as to ask you to kill yourself or take your life, greet you in less than 24 hours, and you are bombarded by mean hateful and racial name calling, yes, it is very painful.

Obvious victim-card-playing and finger o’blame-pointing aside, I wonder how many of these awful messages are actually from Obama supporters who are angry that Pfleger caused so much trouble for their Chosen One.

Just wondering because, well, let’s just say I’m familiar with the kinds of things many Obama supporters are known for posting on the internet.

With new rumors swirling about a video of MO ranting against “whitey,” the speculation seems to be that the Obama’s resignation is an effort to get out ahead of something REALLY gruesome. But if there really is such a vid, I don’t see how quitting Trinity puts out the fire.

Need more data.

mikeyboss on June 1, 2008 at 5:16 PM

I’m all for a good joke myself, except in such cases that it can be used against us. We’re fighting an insurgency of ideas, so to speak. Every time we use such tactics in the open, the other side picks them up, posts them on their blogs and rally more folks against us.
For example, how many times has Michelle, with the intent of showing how hateful the other side is, posted emails she’s received from folks who use nothing but name calling and vulgarity? Our opponent does the same with us.
This is not to say we have to continually sound like a dry philosophy textbook when we speak. There’s plenty of other comedic tools we can use, such as irony, sarcasm to a degree, showing the logical conclusion of some liberal ideas (which is pretty funny at times you have to admit), etc. I’m interested to see what people think about this.

This is all too unbelievable. Not a day goes by that one of these “Reverends”, “This Priest” and a wannabe President doesn’t come out with the most outlandish statements.
How this guy is a priest is amazing. The self appointed Reverends I can understand— spewing whatever they feel like, because no one is in charge of them. But this “Priest” is obvious not in his right mind. Even as a human being he is not a good person. He is the total opposite of what a Priest should be. He is not a represention of Jesus. A decent person, especially a Priest, is at the pulpit cursing, bad mouthing people, exhibiting racism. The Bible says that “God is love”. I beg the Catholic Church to defrock him.
What comes out of his mouth is more fit for Jerry Springer, not a church. God help us if it is true that when some say that many black churches are this way.

I don’t know Pfleger personally, so don’t know for sure if this applies to him, but there are people in the world who make a god out of being liked, and live for the approval of others. They like to make speeches or talk a lot in meetings or at barbecues and be stroked and get positive feedback all the time. These people (I’ve known several) feel an extraordinary, almost literally unbearable level of emotional pain if they ever get a lot of disapproval directed at them.

In any case, whether that’s true of Pfleger or not, I’d bet a lot of money that Pfleger hasn’t had this much anger directed at him in a very long time.

I apologize for anyone who was offended and who thought it to be mockery, that was not my intent, nor my heart.

You know………. I think I have heard this before.

I was flying to Central America last weekend and in all the airport news outlets the MSM, especially CNN was constantly harping on McCain’s so called flawed pastors and their endorsements, trying desperately to sway public opinion against McCain and counter Obambi’s problems. Trying to make a moral equivalance to Wright & Pfagmouth. Now this flap must really be making the editors in the MSM frantic as it unravels all their hard propaganda. I love it! The truth about the left cannot be covered. It is like a festering sore, the puss has to ooze out somewhere.

I went to a Jesuit University in CA- there were at least a half a dozen old fruits like this guy who basically didn’t give a rip about anything other than secular leftist nuttiness.
They were psycologically and sexually messed up and it showed – the disgrace was that they were protected and allowed to teach.

Given the remarkable subjects of this clown’s respect and admiration, i hope if he is ever interviewed, that he will be asked how he feels about Jewish people.

Also, the little heading over the roster of upcoming events and activities, or whatever you call it, on his church’s website: “DA word on the street”?????

Stay classy, church…

Why is it these loudmouths are such complete wimps?

They said what they meant now they need to stand by it like men.

Say what you mean and mean what you say, Dudes.

EJDolbow on June 1, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Clue me in, folks. I have never, EVER heard a rabbi make any kind of sermon even remotely close to what these bozos say. And I’ve only been to church for various friends’ weddings, mostly Catholic.

These guys ARE the exception, aren’t they?

Meryl Yourish on June 1, 2008 at 3:46 PM

No worries, Meryl; what you have seen is real. This mess is the freakshow that you think it is. 49 years on this earth; 44 years of pretty clear memory of every Catholic (raised), Protestant (married), and community Christian church services; and many, many close friendships with priests and ministers, all tell me that this is unlike anything that 99% of the Christians in this country are familiar with.

The Catholic archdiocese in Chicago must be reeling from this latest news. After the homosexual and pedophelia scandals, this crap is the very last thing they need.

Glad folks are starting to go with the “Vanilla Ice” meme for Pfleger.

Ann Coulter was calling him “Eminem,” but Eminem actually has talent, like the Beastie Boys. There is good white rap, and Vanilla Ice is not it. Vanilla Ice carries so much more of the essence of “No-talent @$$clown trying to be something he’s not.”

These preachers and Senator Obama all suffer from much the same problem. For decades, they’ve done well with sermons and speeches that horrify, nauseate, or amuse members of the larger public. Their core constituency have intelligence averaging 85 and have therefore been largely incapable of challenging them.

Reverend Vanilla Ice
