Clinton supporter at rules committee: “They’re throwing the election away!”

posted at 8:51 am on June 1, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Harriet Christian got tossed out of yesterday’s Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting for her vocal protests on behalf of Hillary Clinton as the Democrats decided on a compromise to seat Florida and Michigan delegates at their convention in Denver. Christian vented at the national media, which looked on with amusement as she declared her support for John McCain. Other women vowed to write in Hillary’s name in November rather than vote for Barack Obama:

After hours of emotional testimony and sometimes contentious debate, Democratic Party officials agreed yesterday on a pair of compromises to seat Florida’s and Michigan’s delegations to their national convention. But a part of the deal drew an angry reaction and the threat of a subsequent challenge from the campaign of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The compromises by the Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee called for both delegations, originally barred from the convention for violating party rules, to be seated in full in Denver but with each delegate casting only half a vote.

The actions by the committee were aimed at bringing the long and sometimes-bitter Democratic nomination battle between Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Clinton (N.Y.) to a close and to ensure party unity as the Democrats head into the general election. But the decisions prompted bitter and sometimes-tearful reactions from some members of the audience, who repeatedly shouted over the committee members as they voted.

Democrats wound up with a compromise that solved nothing. Obama still needs more delegates to get to the nomination than he can possibly win in the few remaining primaries. The decision to halve the vote mirrors that of the Republicans, but the method (granting half a vote to the delegates rather than halving the number of delegates) has created a second-class delegate status that guarantees bitter feelings. In the end, the Hillary campaign all but swore to take the fight to the Credentials Committee in Denver, meaning that the same argument will be fought all over again, with the same bitterness.

The Michigan compromise turned out worst of all. The RBC ruled that Clinton would win 34.5 delegates to Obama’s 29.5, despite his not being on the ballot at all. The ratio appears correct if Obama gets credit for all of the rest of the popular vote, but it’s still an impossible situation for the Democrats because of Obama’s absence from the ballot for their primary. Instead of just using the primary votes, the RBC decided to use exit polling as part of its calculation, which infuriated Team Hillary, which lost delegates as a result. They accused the RBC of “hijacking” four delegates for Barack Obama and used that as their reason to continue their push all the way to Denver.

All of this led to the rant by Ms. Christian, and her voice was not the only one enraged by the RBC decision yesterday. In truth, the DNC can’t do much to assuage either side, nor does it appear that they can close this debate before Denver. The bruised feelings this weekend show that any push to force superdelegates into commitments before the first ballot will be seen as more illegitimate machinations by the party establishment against the woman who has come closest to winning a major party nomination, and an insult to the sensitivities of her considerable faction in the party. No matter who wins in Denver, the Democrats had better prepare for large-scale defections in November.

Update: I had the name as Christiansen in the original post. Thanks to David Bell for the correction.

It is a bit screwy how Obama can voluntarily take his name off the ballot in Michigan, and can still end up getting about the same amount of delegates as Hillary. I don’t blame Hillary for being mad because Obama is making out like a bandit on this one.

The compromises by the Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee called for both delegations, originally barred from the convention for violating party rules, to be seated in full in Denver but with each delegate casting only half a vote.

Oh, please, God, I implore You, let them change it to 3/5 of a vote.

In spite of all the turmoil and embarrassment, I still don’t see how this will turn out so badly for Dems in the Fall. If reports are to believed, they may get a veto-proof majority in the House and Senate, and a liberal Republican President, known for his excellent relations with their party. Furthermore, by giving Obama the nod, they keep the AA’s on their team for 2012. I think we’re in worse shape.

Much has been revealed about the Democrat Party so far, and we have several months to go. I had no idea that such hatred for white people was so prevalent with black America, nor did I have any knowledge of such hatred & victimization being preached from pastors (both white & black). Oh yes, much has been revealed about the make-up of the Dems. I posted these words from Bill Cosby on another thread, but would like to pull a repeat here; this message is so profound; the hatred displayed by Dems for Cosby now becomes more clear.

Subject: BILL COSBY ON REV WRIGHT
Article from Wall Street Journal:

Rev. Wright epitomizes the thoughts and actions that have prevented and continue to prevent black America from moving ahead and achieving their potential as a people. He suggests that this United States of America made up of sons and daughters of immigrants (I’m talking of the millions of 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation immigrants in this country) of every race, creed, color and religion, each and everyone of them who had nothing to do with slavery, somehow owe something to a group of people who have never been slaves?

Its amazing. It seems everyone is to blame for the shambles black society is in with its violence, drugs, high school drop out rates, misogyny, and a host of other real and virulent problems, except for the very people who engage in such behavior.

Enough. As a society, culture or people, they should look within themselves and fix their problems. When did this man become the spokesman for the black church? And of course his church is different, but that doesn’t mean his message and philosophy is acceptable, or productive, or non-offensive, or not-racist or indicative of our greater cultural behaviors, values and norms as Americans.

And yes, the link between this man and Obama really does matter. At a very minimum, it provides insight into the political and philosophical strain that Obama adheres to.

So, an “uncommitted” vote in Michigan meant a vote for Obama? Dude! Is this for real?

How did they come up with that conclusion? If someone wanted to vote for Obama, they would have voted for him as a “write in,” which was one of the choices.

And to rely on exit polling for the results, really? Have there been any instances of elections being certified according to exit poll results?

The Dems have no shame.

I’m sure John McCain is upset with what’s going on with the Democrats. After all, if Hillary ends up having the Vice President spot, he will lose everything.

John McCain is probably the only politician who apologizes to his opponents for making valid political attacks against them on election year.

Every morning during this election season, John McCain looks in the mirror and practices saying “I apologize to you my friends.”

John McCain should apologize to the Republican Party for running for President.

And John McCain’s mother should apologize for giving birth to him.

Indy Conservative on June 1, 2008 at 9:36 AM

Compromise?

Yeah, right. What a dog and pony show.

They are using the penalty position toward Michigan and Florida as an excuse to nominate Barack Obama.

When they originally penalized Michigan and Florida, the purpose was to keep these two states quiet and not allow them undue influence on the remaining primaries.

They never expected a close final outcome like this.

Now that the individual states have had their say, there is no credible reason NOT to count those votes in their whole numbers, except to overshadow her clear popular vote dominance.

In front of the entire country, the DNC is telling all her supporters, “girl, just lie back and enjoy it”.

I’m with your line of thinking… The Clinton’s are going to spend the next batch of years handing out “payback” checks. Many (I mean MANY) ranking people in the Dem party, are in the position they are in compliments of the Clinton’s. Hillary has spent a great deal of time over the past 15 years, setting the chess board for her day; her moment in history. Payback time is a-coming… Payback time will also include many from the media the Clinton’s were pretty sure they owned.

I beg to differ. All they had to do what seat the delegates and Hillary’s supporters would have had no reason to be bitter. Obama supports shouldn’t be too concerned with it since he’s going to win the nomination no matter what, for all the reasons we discussed for months now. The way to
“punish” the State Parties should have been to punish them personally by breaking their balls at the convention – hotel rooms assignments, dinner seating assignments, location on convention floor, etc… You make the convention unpleasant for the party elite who look forward to be treated like royalty once every four years.

TheBigOldDog on June 1, 2008 at 9:44 AM

Uncommitted went to Obama because those were votes against Hillary and he’s the only other candidate left with a campaign.

So the vote of someone who thought “Wow, I can’t decide between these great candidates Hillary and Dodd, so I’ll say I’m uncommitted, and thank heavens that loser Obama isn’t on the ballot” magically becomes a vote for Obama. Better than nothing I suppose.

geckomon on June 1, 2008 at 9:25 AM

I listened to a lot of the rules committee hearing yesterday on POTUS 08, on XM satellite. The write in ballots were not counted in Michigan – and, because of some crazy rules, they weren’t allowed to be opened and viewed. Some quirky law that stated that the candidate had to give permission to be a write in candidate. That’s why they had to depend on exit polls to discern the intent of the voter (intent of the voter – hanging chads, sound familiar?)

Immediately after Michigan’s opening statements, several committee members voiced their concern over using exit poll data as a legitimate way to divide delegates.

Michigan’s argument was that since Obama wasn’t on the ballot, anyone who voted “uncommitted” they assumed was voting for Obama or Edwards.

Their logic was crazy. My husband and I both commented that baffoonery runs our country – not sane, logical people.

jgapinoy on June 1, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Oh yeah, another thing – Obama and Edwards were not required to remove their names from the Michigan ballot. They did so out of their own accord. This seems like a set up to me – except Obama was figuring on being on the losing end and fighting for the Michigan delegates instead of the other way around. Obama: Take name off ballot, get behind in delegate counts, say that somehow the delegate count is skewed because all the candidates weren’t on the ballot, take it to rules committee, rules committee votes in your favor and voila! You are suddenly ahead in delegate counts and the liberal elitist whites have their “feel good” candidate – a young, energetic black guy with no experience, but with a great stare…

Um, that’s what the MSM wants you to believe. If you look at each of the Senate races the MSM was saying the dems were going to take from the GOP, it’s a joke. Liddy Dole ain’t gonna lose. John Cornyn ain’t gonna lose. I still think Bob Schaffer will win in Colorado because the dems nominated a hard left, nasty personality, borderline 9/11 troofer named Mark Udall who has an even more obnoxious brother named Mo who is also a CO politician.

They are basing the MS prediction of dem victory on the fact that a dem won that special election in Wicker’s old district. But the GOP nominated a guy who looked very much like Scott McClellan (Mr. Potato Head) … not impressive, and the dems ran a conservative man against him and won.

The primary in NM is between Heather Wilson and a very conservative guy. I think Wilson will win the primary and will then win the general election. She’s smart, attractive, and appealing to a wide variety of voters….the only way she could lose is if hard core conservatives sit home and hand the seat to the dems because their guy didn’t win the primary.

Hmmmm. sounds familiar. And YOU BETTER BELIEVE the MSM is gonna find as many “True Conservatives” as they can to interview to try to depress GOP voter turnout. Don’t let them get away with it. The only way the dems get a veto proof majority in the Senate is if Americans let the MSM and Ronulans/MDS sufferers convince enough conservatives to hand it to them on a silver platter.

Comment by Comedian Bill Cosby About the Rev. Jeremiah Wright-Unproven!

Summary of the eRumor:
An article said to have been in the Wall Street Journal in which comedian Bill Cosby comments on The Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the African-American community in the United States.
The Truth:
This was not from an “article” in the Wall Street Journal.

It was from the Wall Street Journal blog a “comment” section in which readers can attach their responses to an article.

In this case a Wall Street Journal article was posted in the blog on April 28, 2008 titled Rev. Wright Talks About Reconciliation.

The text that was circulated in the eRumor was one of many comments submitted by readers and was described as having been written by “Bill Cosby.” There is no evidence whether it was the comedian, someone else with the same name, or someone simply claiming to be Bill Cosby.

Quote taken from truthorfiction.com. Whether or not the views expressed in the above-mentioned rumour may actually reflect Mr Cosby’s views and whether or not these views may be of some worth independent of this I just thought it worthwhile to point out that this rumour about Bill Cosby’s ‘article’ in the WSJ might just be false.

OBAMA GETS AWAY WITH EVERYTHING

New York Times Syndicate

March 29, 2008

“And this clerical vileness has now reached the point of disfiguring the campaigns of both leading candidates for our presidency. If you think Wright is gruesome, wait until you get a load of the next Chicago “reverend,” one James Meeks, another South Side horror show with a special sideline in the baiting of homosexuals. In April 2004, Barack Obama told a reporter from the Chicago Sun-Times that he had three spiritual mentors or counselors: Jeremiah Wright, James Meeks, and Father Michael Pfleger-for a change of pace, a white Catholic preacher who has a close personal feeling for the man he calls (as does Obama) Minister Farrakhan. This crossover stuff is not as “inclusive” as it might be made to seem: Meeks’ main political connections in the white community are with the hysterically anti-homosexual wing of the Christian right. If Obama were to be read a list of the positions that his clerical supporters take on everything from Judaism to sodomy, he would be in the smooth and silky business of “distancing” from now until November. And that is why he hopes that his Philadelphia speech, which dissociated him from everything and nothing, will be enough. He seems, indeed, to have a real gift for remaining adequately uninformed about the real beliefs of his “mentors.

As hard as the MSM tried to convince people that the Philly religion speech was some kind of new Gettysburg Adress, it appears that it actually was the bomb that it deserved to be.

Another example of why we can’t let the MSM convince us that all is lost, we should just sit home, because the dems are going to win big no matter what.

Here’s a link to the WSJ article about Wright. The “Bill Cosby” comment is in the comments thread that follows. I very much doubt it was written by the actual Cosby. It’s just a screen name, after all.

sauropod on June 1, 2008 at 10:36 AM

May 2006: When Meeks ran as an Independent for governor of Illinois, he announced: “Come on with me, white churches. Call me and tell me to run for governor. You’ll have [Republican nominee], who believes in abortion and gay rights and [Democratic Gov.], who believes in abortion and gay rights. Theologically, politically, for the white conservative voter, I’m their guy. I have their philosophy. 7”

October 2006: Meeks’ church sponsored a “Halloween fright night” which “consigned to the flames of hell two mincing young men wearing body glitter who were supposed to be homosexuals.”8

February 2007: A newsletter by the SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER (SPLC) included Meeks in its “Top Ten leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement.” According to their profile:9

“Last year, he ran for governor as a virtual single-issue candidate, drawing national support from Christian fundamentalists by boldly vowing to fight marriage equality at every turn.”

Despite his virulent anti-gay stance, in June 2002, Meeks invited accused sex offender R. Kelly to sing at his church’s kindergarten shortly after the singer was released on bond for child pornography.

Typically brave behavior from Barry:

Jan 2005: During the critical moments when the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill to prevent LGBT discrimination, Meeks actively campaigned against the measure – and then delivered his vote: Nay. Obama was apparently unable, unwilling or uninterested in lobbying Meeks to do otherwise – even to vote “present” on the measure. The bill would have failed had it received one less vote.

But Barry wouldn’t be comfortable in lots of Roman Catholic Churches because they are so intolerant toward homosexuals.

One more time:

In April 2004, Barack Obama told a reporter from the Chicago Sun-Times that he had three spiritual mentors or counselors: Jeremiah Wright, James Meeks, and Father Michael Pfleger-for a change of pace, a white Catholic preacher who has a close personal feeling for the man he calls (as does Obama) Minister Farrakhan.

DNC to all Hillary supporters:

“Just lie back, B!@ch, and enjoy it”

Saltysam on June 1, 2008 at 10:39 AM

Soooo… let me get this straight.

The Dems, through a hand picked bunch of Profesional Politicians, called the rules commitee, is GIVING Obama “votes” he never got.

And then people wonder why we don’t trust politians.

Sad part? these were mostly Congresspeople… kinda points out why their approval ratings are in the dirt.

Romeo13 on June 1, 2008 at 10:40 AM

This woman tells like she sees it and I applaud her. Politicians could take a lesson from her.

Wade on June 1, 2008 at 10:43 AM

The Democrat Party: Where everyone gets to vote! (Disclaimer: “By vote we mean not a full, actual vote, and not necesarily a vote for whom you fully, or partly, or actually, voted for.)
We are the party of the people! (By people we mean stooges of our choosing.)
Come join change and hope and democracy in action! (By Democracy, we mean a commitee of selected individuals who will then instruct you as to what action democracy will take. You’ll like it, because we and the media tell you to.)

Spc Steve on June 1, 2008 at 10:07 AM

Quite right!

Also, some republican members of congress should follow this womans lead and grow a pair.

And, wonder who in the heck Obama will choose for a running mate…

Did Bill Cosby really say those words… Don’t know, but here are some sites that think he did…

I read this: http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2008/05/bill_cosby_speaks_at_family_su.html
and it does seem likely that Cosby would have said those words.

Maybe Bill will come here and shed some light on this issue.

Keemo on June 1, 2008 at 10:54 AM

Screaming at the top of their lungs, the Dems, in lockstep with the MSM, accused Bush, and later the Supreme Court, of disenfranchising thousands of voters in Florida back in 2000.

In spite of the big hulabaloo put on by Gore’s pack of attorneys and follow-up investigations by the NYT and WaPo, their was not a single discovery of any disenfranchisement of Florida voters.

But now, this same party with it’s panties in a bunch over Bush’s so-called stolen election that wasn’t, gathers it’s leaders in the form of the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee and publicly before their delegates, publicly before the television cameras, disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters.

Brother, that is hypocrisy with a gallactically huge capital “H”.

And the MSM *winked*.

fogw on June 1, 2008 at 11:01 AM

I’m sure John McCain is upset with what’s going on with the Democrats. After all, if Hillary ends up having the Vice President spot, he will lose everything.

Oh, I think it would help him. She could do all the attacking while he takes the high road.

Wait, were you talking about her being OBAMA’S VP? Never mind…

MamaAJ on June 1, 2008 at 10:13 AM

If Hillary is Obama’s VP, John McCain will lose everything, meaning: he will not be able to be Obama’s VP.

Got it?

Indy Conservative on June 1, 2008 at 11:01 AM

I think we should really start listing all of the ways that McCain could f*ck up the election.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 1, 2008 at 9:23 AM

One way is to alienate conservatives like myself. As long as he is an amnesty whore I won’t vote for him.

An interesting side light is what the MSM left out. When I was a kid I can remember the Democratic primary credentials committee refusing to seat some black delegates. If it was the Republicans we would have been treated to a walk down memory lane in an endless loop.

snaggletoothie on June 1, 2008 at 11:09 AM

In the DNC Rules Committee meeting yesterday former Michigan Governor James Blanchard made one of the most important observations, but it seems to have gone over the heads of most. In explaining the fact that there was no DNC ruling that had required any candidate to remove their name from the Michigan primary ballot, the fact that Obama had removed his should not be considered a reaction to a DNC dictate, but instead just a very poor decision in campaign strategy.

The fact that Obama has been awarded the number of 1/2-vote delegates he was given, by the methods of calculation that was used by the Rules Committee, has enraged a significant number of Michigan Dems. I believe Obama will most certainly carry Wayne County (Detroit, Dearborn, etc), and maybe Macomb County, but there is now a very good chance that he will not carry Michigan in the General.

Yoop on June 1, 2008 at 11:13 AM

These people can not run a primary process much less the country.

Terrye on June 1, 2008 at 11:25 AM

This is hilarious! The Dems just decided to intentionally disenfranchise over two million voters with a committee decision in order to push the more radical of their two candidates on to the nomination. I hope the Dem voters in Michigan and Florida realize what what their party just did to them, and never again vote for another Dem candidate. Having people worth only half a vote reminds me of the Dems who pushed for blacks to be worth 3/5 of a person in Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution.

I agree with you. There’s very little upside to Hillary from being Obama’s VP. And it’s unlikely that Obama wants her as his VP in any event. But the offer will probably be made anyway, if just to try and placate Hillary’s ticked-off supporters. Obama is already having trouble with important Dem groups — Hispanics, Jews, working-class whites. He really can’t afford to alienate a big group of Dem women too.

There was also a lot of speculation on that other site about the potential impact of the rumored Michelle Obama videotape, in which she allegedly makes an anti-white rant while speaking at Trinity. Does anybody know if this videotape actually exists, or is this just another internet legend?

davenp35 on June 1, 2008 at 11:25 AM

I’d like to blame that on the Democrats too but there’s a couple of problems. First the Democrats did not exist as a party at the time the Constitution was written. Second, Article 1, Section 3, clause 3 was about how the census would be counted for purposes of Representatives and direct taxes.

Article 1, Section 3, clause 3

Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.

misterpeasea on June 1, 2008 at 11:54 AM

You know what’s an under-reported story? Operation Chaos in reverse. It’s Rush Limabaugh’s and others’ contention that McCain won Fl, and perhaps other places, because of open primary rules and that he got the Dem. vote. Talk about being hoisted by your own petard.

I’ve been seeing the same rumors floating around the net for the past few weeks. Problem is, even if the rumor provides us with something that appears to be real, who’s to say that a few weeks later the piece won’t proof out to be a fabrication; as appears to be the case with the Bill Cosby quote. The time is coming (rapidly) when we all will have to simply state something like “a person calling themselves (fill in the blank) has stated the following, which I happen to agree with.” A disclaimer must accompany the comment so that a permaban doesn’t follow the comment.

Too late for the spreading theory ninga; google has dozens of pages on this article dated prior to this day. Like I said, a person calling him/her self Bill Cosby stated the following, which I find to be extremely profound words. Bill Cosby has stated very similar sentiments during previous speeches, as described in the links above.

I’m curious as to “why” these words have such a powerful impact on you. Snopes has labeled this story as “undetermined”…

Keemo on June 1, 2008 at 1:02 PM

ninga,

My wife is giving me that look; you know the one “are you going to sit up there on that damn computer all day”. Might I just say these final words before I get my butt out in the yard (where my 4-dogs roam) and get some things accomplished before this day off comes to it’s end.

If these comment boards become so inflicted with POC and all of it’s diseases, every member of this community will eventually be banned; that would include you. Mistakes will be made, and today I posted information that proved to be non-authentic. I’ll make a better effort in the future ninga; I promise…

Personal attacks along with thread rape; these are acts of destruction that bring ruin to honest debate.

Entelechy on June 1, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Hello again, Entelechy.

My ‘contribution’ is based on 2 decades of observing ChiTcago style politics, and I’ve noticed many of the political power brokers from that failed socialistic experiment have been injecting themselves into the Presidential races since 2000. Unfortunately for them, their bag of tricks has been catalogued, counted, examined, and thus they offer no real surprises in this election cycle. Cigarman’s minions may still have a few tricks up their sleeves though.

Prime example why women can’t be in charge…ruled by emotion and vindictiveness (sorry ladies, contrary to popular belief, Hillary does not have balls and neither do we… pretending to be a male and being a male are not the same thing. We don’t have time for Bill’s wee wee wandering to deal with his scorned wife’s rage in the WH. This woman proves it.
