Breaking: Obamas quit Trinity United Church of Christ

Share on Facebook | regular view

According to Ace o’ Spades and The Corner, CNN reports that Barack and Michelle Obama have resigned from the congregation of the radical church to which they have belonged for over 20 years. If confirmed, the move attempts to end two months of controversy surrounding the commentary at TUCC by Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, and Otis Moss.

I’ll come back with more commentary once the details have been reported. However, I don’t see how this helps, and it could hurt in two different ways. First, it confirms that the church is not in the mainstream, which once again calls his judgment into question. Wright and Pfleger gave these kinds of sermons there the entire time, not just over the last few weeks. The big problem is that the Obamas sat in that church for 20 years listening to these sermons and finding nothing objectionably about them until they got disseminated to the nation.

Second, and potentially more damaging, it shows Obama’s willingness to throw anyone over the side when the boat starts sinking. That won’t go over very well with his core supporters who have admired his loyalty to TUCC, who excused Wright by pointing out that he had retired, and who bought Obama’s explanation of the “wonderful community” and great works of TUCC. Is that now nothing more than a convenient lie?

If the Obamas quit TUCC, they will confirm it as a political problem, and the act won’t convince anyone that they disagree with its rhetoric. They may convince people that he only joined TUCC for its political connections in Chicago — but that doesn’t exactly reflect well on Obama, either.

Update: Here’s the story at CNN, and it’s interesting why Obama quit:

“We don’t want to have to answer for everything that’s stated in the church,” the Democratic front-runner said. “We also don’t want the church subjected to the scrutiny that a presidential campaign legitimately undergoes.”

Obama said the Pfleger controversy made it clear that, as long as he remained a member of the Trinity congregation, remarks from the pulpit would be “imputed” to him, even if they conflicted with his personal views.

So he’s leaving because he doesn’t want TUCC to get further scrutiny, and not because he wants to distance himself from the radical nature of the church.  That’s not exactly a profile in courage.  Let’s recall what Obama said just ten weeks ago about his membership at Trinity:

Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way….

Like other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety – the doctor and the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Like other black churches, Trinity’s services are full of raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing, clapping, screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to the untrained ear. The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America.

This reaction combines the worst of both worlds — it says nothing that rejects the radical rhetoric, and it makes clear that he’s only interested in the political burden that Trinity now represents.

So this is the Clintons fault?

LegendHasIt on May 31, 2008 at 8:19 PM

…As for the BHO/TUCC separation blowing up the post-racialism, I strongly disagree. It is designed to enhance the post-racism aspect of the BHO campaign, and the mushy middle loves giving second (and third and fourth and fifth) chances…..
steveegg on May 31, 2008 at 7:23 PM

Good point. In national politics second, third and fourth chances are called “chances”. But when the mushy middle applies that spirit to international issues the term is “appeasement”.

JonRoss on May 31, 2008 at 8:19 PM

So where will he go tomorrow for church? I’ve heard about this priest… oh what was his name? Ah yes, Michael Pfleger. Maybe he’ll find his preaching more to his liking since Mr. Wright retired.

Send_Me on May 31, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Or, his judgment is lacking completely. Now he blames others about how the take faith…

You are very kind in assuming this tool had any judgement to begin with. Kudos to you for your generosity.

Entelechy on May 31, 2008 at 8:20 PM

I beg to differ that it’s not hurting McCain (and to much the same extent, the RNC). There are simply not enough in the middle to replace the conservatives for whom the noseplugs won’t work.
steveegg on May 31, 2008 at 8:12 PM

You’re right, it has hurt McCain. I guess it seemed like it didn’t because it hasn’t played out in the same way as I was referring to it playing out with Obama. So I’ll yield the point. As to the post-partisan stuff, I guess time will tell, but post-partisan can only be communicated effectively with a large dose of authenticity, and this denunciation of his church, after defending it for months, looks very inauthentic.

Weight of Glory on May 31, 2008 at 8:21 PM

How’s the media going to take all this religious stuff?

“How does this affect u…”

“When would of have liked to have release this info”

“How does this affect your family”

“How would this affect the church you end up in”

“How would this affect u’r new pastor”

This will haunt Barack Obama:

Saying, as proof that ditching the church wasn’t political, he said that he could have distanced himself long ago, “like the day we announced our nomination” — and then you could see a dim light go on in his eyes — cause he’d just remembered how he and Michelle had forced Rev. Wright to Bless them in the cellar of the building they were in.

The guy sucks on his feet.

Smirking again. Stalling for answer…smirking…attacking the media…saying nothing…circus…American people…bla, bla, bla…no answer to the question if this is “political”.

Entelechy on May 31, 2008 at 8:26 PM

Watch your back Michelle.

fogw on May 31, 2008 at 8:26 PM

But is this helping Michelle’s children?

Maquis on May 31, 2008 at 8:27 PM

I have it on mute….he looks extremely annoyed. I was hoping Michelle Obama would be there to offer tears of sadness for having to leave that church. Perhaps we’ll see them soon.

SouthernGent on May 31, 2008 at 8:27 PM

And I thought Woodstock was a love fest

I thought he was talking with his staffers… and still screwing it up.

Shivas Irons on May 31, 2008 at 8:27 PM

Somebody needs to ask if he would rejoin the church when he is no longer in the limelight and impacting the church’s operation and congregation negatively. His answer will show this whole thing is an empty exercise.

“The church is not worthy of denouncement”

Interesting way to put it, boze.

sloopy on May 31, 2008 at 8:28 PM

“Had rev. Wrights controversial statements not surfaced…this would not have been a problem”.

The media and him are clueless of what this means. It’s just a matter of having been found out, not what mattered in there for 20 years.

We so deserve him, if we vote for him, directly or indirectly.

Entelechy on May 31, 2008 at 8:28 PM

Sermons of the church = Charatures of the church…

He just did 5 back flips explaining how he doesn’t denounce and there is nothing to denounce of the church… WHY IS HE LEAVING THEN….

He never denounced the church, nor anticipated this controversy. He was just found out, and admitted to it.

This is pivotal and troubling – we’ve only seen the beginning. Now, let the videos, papers, and all the details come out. And the serious questions to be asked/answered.

Mark today’s calendar. This was a big moment in this campaign. Hillary was listening to this carefully.

Entelechy on May 31, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Now he’s gonna have to go find a church that practices its hate a lot more quietly.

The main thing I’ve taken away from all of this has nothing to do with Obama. I now know much more about what many black Americans think and feel about many issues. I am now aware that there is a vast gulf between many blacks and many whites that points to coming social and political problems that we can only begin to imagine.

shooter on May 31, 2008 at 8:43 PM

My apologies if this has been mentioned on another comment page, but in one of his answers before the non-denouncement one he basically proved he really believes the same way these pastors seem to at Trinity. He said he was leaving so that Reverend Moss and other guest pastors wouldn’t have to look over their shoulders anytime they wanted to preach a message. (That’s paraphrased, but pretty close)

So he wants thousands of people subjected to the message of hate and if he stayed at the church they couldn’t do it anymore.

Something happened behind close doors at the DNC that resulted in this announcement by Obama. Perhaps Hillary showed even more video from TUCC that she is ready to leak to the press, so Obama was forced into this announcement to pre-empt that?

I think the Michigan -4 to Hillary +4 to Obama was intentional on the Clinton’s part…they needed an excuse to carry this all the way to the convention.

If Barack had enough super delegates to put him over the threshold, that would have already been made public. The fact that it hasn’t been made public means that he doesn’t have them.

Given that Hillary will take this all the way to the convention, those supers have no reason to commit publicly right now. They will wait until the convention to make up their mind. If Obama continues to implode, they will vote for Hillary.

I still think that the toughest ticket the Dems could put forth would be Clinton/Obama. They would get to play both the gender card and the race card. I believe that was always Hillary’s game plan. And I believe Hillary has dirt on McCain. She had access to the FBI and IRS files of anyone she wanted from Jan 1993 – Jan 2001. McCain is her “chosen one” to defeat. McCain voted against Billy Jeff in the impeachment trial. Hillary can’t wait to use the “politics of personal destruction” against McCain.

Another possibility would be to shore up the Hollywood base by jumping on the Xenu bandwagon during the campaign and then doing his Shahada in November.

Right now Obama is ahead in the Electoral Vote race when you look at the last 15 days of polls. It will be interesting to see how things begin to shape up following this attempt to put this behind him and McCain’s strong attack on him for not having been to Iraq since early 2006. These kinds of things will take a toll on him as time wears on.
