Breaking: Obamas quit Trinity United Church of Christ

According to Ace o’ Spades and The Corner, CNN reports that Barack and Michelle Obama have resigned from the congregation of the radical church to which they have belonged for over 20 years. If confirmed, the move attempts to end two months of controversy surrounding the commentary at TUCC by Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, and Otis Moss.
I’ll come back with more commentary once the details have been reported. However, I don’t see how this helps, and it could hurt in two different ways. First, it confirms that the church is not in the mainstream, which once again calls his judgment into question. Wright and Pfleger gave these kinds of sermons there the entire time, not just over the last few weeks. The big problem is that the Obamas sat in that church for 20 years listening to these sermons and finding nothing objectionably about them until they got disseminated to the nation.
Second, and potentially more damaging, it shows Obama’s willingness to throw anyone over the side when the boat starts sinking. That won’t go over very well with his core supporters who have admired his loyalty to TUCC, who excused Wright by pointing out that he had retired, and who bought Obama’s explanation of the “wonderful community” and great works of TUCC. Is that now nothing more than a convenient lie?
If the Obamas quit TUCC, they will confirm it as a political problem, and the act won’t convince anyone that they disagree with its rhetoric. They may convince people that he only joined TUCC for its political connections in Chicago — but that doesn’t exactly reflect well on Obama, either.
Update: Here’s the story at CNN, and it’s interesting why Obama quit:
“We don’t want to have to answer for everything that’s stated in the church,” the Democratic front-runner said. “We also don’t want the church subjected to the scrutiny that a presidential campaign legitimately undergoes.”
Obama said the Pfleger controversy made it clear that, as long as he remained a member of the Trinity congregation, remarks from the pulpit would be “imputed” to him, even if they conflicted with his personal views.
So he’s leaving because he doesn’t want TUCC to get further scrutiny, and not because he wants to distance himself from the radical nature of the church. That’s not exactly a profile in courage. Let’s recall what Obama said just ten weeks ago about his membership at Trinity:
Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way….
Like other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety – the doctor and the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Like other black churches, Trinity’s services are full of raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing, clapping, screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to the untrained ear. The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America.
This reaction combines the worst of both worlds — it says nothing that rejects the radical rhetoric, and it makes clear that he’s only interested in the political burden that Trinity now represents.

Hey, she isn’t going to need to campaign ‘cept to Superdelegates and she can keep asking for donations. Anyway, Obama is self distructing.

MirCat on May 31, 2008 at 7:22 PM
I disagree that it is at all damaging. Since BHO’s target audience is now the superdelegates (mostly white) and shortly will be the mushy middle (also mostly white), he has to at least appear to throw TUCC overboard.
Why is it different than McCain’s (and the RNC’s) jettisoning of conservatives? I’m not convinced that he really means it for one. Even if he does mean it, his core consituency is not going to pass up the opportunity to put one of their own in the White House. On the flip side, we’re tired of being dumped on by the not-quite-as-liberal half of the bipartisan Party-In-Government.
steveegg on May 31, 2008 at 7:23 PM
If i were Hillary I would compare a 1/2 delegate vote to the way that Black people were considered half a person, and say that is NOT the America of Today and tht America that I know, either COUNT ALL OF THE VOTES AND DELEGATES AND VOICES OR COUNT NONE OF THEM.
We are NOT going to regress, i’m about progress, I do not want to go backwards, the way the rules committee seems to wants to bring us, I thought that the Democrat party was about progress and inclusiveness and about counting all the votes… 2000 is going to look pretty hypocritical on our part if this outcome is let to stand.

Maybe. But perhaps she can just lay low, keep making speeches, ignore Obama totally, and show up in Denver. Assuming that she doesn’t lose many delegates already pledged or commited to her. Just depends I guess on her view of 2012. If she feels 2008 is her only option I am sure she would be glad whip up a little civil war in the streets of Denver. What does she have to lose ? Would she really accept table scraps from Obama as a reward for going home quietly ?

I worry about Barack Obama the human being. I think he’s being used by evil forces.

Limerick on May 31, 2008 at 7:27 PM
Drip. Drip. Drip. This just keeps the story going longer. What wonderful “judgment” Obambi has. He should have done this on day one, but instead he let it linger. Now this announcement, on the weekend presumably to reduce attention to it, comes almost a week after the flair up. Obama could hardly afford to not cut his ties now, but the damage is done.
BryanS on May 31, 2008 at 7:28 PM
This is too late and too little. There a so many quotes of him defending Trinity United that it’s going to make him look weak, flip-flopping, and politically craven/expedient.
No, Fox will not drop it. Nor will I think the Hillary forces. Who still have media friends. Nor will the 527’s. Heck Pfleger alone, Father Eminem, is worth his weight in gold to Republicans all across the ballot. Why not run those quotes as “Democratic Values from Chicago?”
I am quite sure the video of Michelle screaming about Whitey at Trinity exists and is likely ready to drop.
Really, there is nothing Obama can do now. He owns Trinity, the congregation going nuts for every lunatic thing said there, his presence there for 20 years. He can’t unring the bell as above posters noted. It’s all him. Resigning from the Church won’t help. Heck it confirms there was a problem for twenty years and he was fine with it.
It says Obama believes the same things and is just trying to hide it. I’m going to enjoy the Michelle video. It should be fun.

Interesting point, but I think the difference lies in that Barack’s separation centers around race whereas McCain’s separation revolves around ideology. It never hurt McCain because he was never really viewed as an ideological conservative. But Barack is supposed to be post-racial, post-partisan, and his separation blows up both those ideas.

Dems decide on Florida, Michigan delegates
Members of a Democratic rules committee voted today to seat all of Florida’s and Michigan’s delegation to the party’s national convention and give their delegates a half vote each. The panel heard the two states’ appeals on the decision to strip all of their delegates because they moved their primary contests earlier on the calendar.
From CNN
bnelson44 on May 31, 2008 at 7:31 PM
This is a perfect example as to why Obama’s candidacy is detined to be cursed from the start: He has too many strikingly differing constituencies that he needs to please (”kowtow” to if you will) to be able to do it effectively as to any of them.
Sure, he can please the Superdelegates and get the nomination…
Then he has to make it up to the hard-core of his African-American base…
Then he has to make it up to more Whites that he has alienated in the process…
Then he has to make it up to the African-American core again…
Then he has to make it up to the party/hard Left elites…
and so on, and so on…
It’s gonna be a wild ride!
seanrobins on May 31, 2008 at 7:32 PM
So, does this mean that Hillary and Obama split half the number of delegates that would otherwise have been divvied up…
And that in Michigan, Hillary gets the entirety of the “half of the delegates” of that state, since Obamawan is not on the ballot there?
I’m getting dizzy.
seanrobins on May 31, 2008 at 7:33 PM
Vote was 19-8. Thirteen of those were Clinton delegates so even her own tanked 1/2 the votes.
Limerick on May 31, 2008 at 7:34 PM
Won’t this increase the chances that video will show up of Obama clapping to the hateful beat of Rev. Wright?
Can you imagine the reaction at Trinity United to being defenestrated (the underside of bus has no more room) by Barack Obama?
Bitter, table for the entire congregation??
Shivas Irons on May 31, 2008 at 7:34 PM
As far as how this will play with the SD, I have no idea. If I were a SD I would interpret this as self destruction, and with no indication that the bleeding will stop (this will only keep the issue in the paper for at least another news cycle), I would be scared in hitching my wagon onto the Obama train. But that’s just me.

If he can be duped for 20 years God save us if the dolt attains the presidency. This may fool his mesmerized brain washed followers but it does not fool the majority of people in this country.

SteveMG on May 31, 2008 at 7:39 PM
Doesn’t that really help Clinton? Her argument has always been about the popular vote, not the delegate count. With the DNC legitimizing Florida and Michigan, not only will that push the total delegate number further out, but will give Clinton a larger total of the popular vote. Is that right, or am I just really dizzy?
Weight of Glory on May 31, 2008 at 7:40 PM
Trinity got him through the nomination, thats all he needed them for. He probably figures he’ll lose some black vote in Chicago, but he can afford that.

Statement from The Clinton Campaign
Harold Ickes and Tina Flournoy made the following statement this evening:
Today’s results are a victory for the people of Florida who will have a voice in selecting our Party’s nominee and will see its delegates seated at our party’s convention. The decision by the Rules and Bylaws Committee honors the votes that were cast by the people of Florida and allocates the delegates accordingly.
We strongly object to the Committee’s decision to undercut its own rules in seating Michigan’s delegates without reflecting the votes of the people of Michigan.
The Committee awarded to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton. This decision violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party.
We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan’s delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.

The people that were truly undecided ended up voting for Obama anyhow..(Or if the voted undecided because they voted for Edwards, who is to say that they would have voted for Obama IF it was just Obama vs. Hillary?) LMAO..

I believe polling shows Obama is the weaker candidate. And I think he will continue to unravel despite the MSM trying to prop him up. But I am really torn. Even though I believe Clinton and Obama are both evil, he is evil and a fool, and thus more danger to the country if elected POTUS. I am still trying to figure this one out.

You got the Florida half right. According to The Green Papers, if there had been no sanctions, Clinton would have received 105 delegate-votes from the primary with Obama receiving 67 delegate-votes. With the halving, she’s getting 52.5 delegate-votes and he’s getting 33.5 delegate-votes.
The Michigan half is the screw-Clinton job. The Green Papers had the no-sanction delegate allocation from the primary as 73 delegate-votes to Clinton and 55 delegate-votes uncommitted. The DNC accepted the 69 Clinton-59 Obama delegate split proposed by the Michigan party (a -4 for Clinton and a +59 for Obama), then halved the voting power for 34.5 delegate-votes for Clinton and 29.5 delegate-votes for Obama.

I beg to differ that it’s not hurting McCain (and to much the same extent, the RNC). There are simply not enough in the middle to replace the conservatives for whom the noseplugs won’t work.
As for the BHO/TUCC separation blowing up the post-racialism, I strongly disagree. It is designed to enhance the post-racism aspect of the BHO campaign, and the mushy middle loves giving second (and third and fourth and fifth) chances.
Ever since 1992, it’s all been about electability to the mutual exclusion of “self-destructive” tendencies and anything else. The only difference this time is the ‘Rats are taking the “historic” angle in addition to the “empty suit” one.
