Why doesn’t Obama meet with Iran now?

posted at 7:21 pm on May 30, 2008 by Allahpundit

A fabulous question from See-Dub. How about it? Hope and Change and bold diplomatic moves to usher in a golden age of rapprochement simply can’t wait until January 2009. We need a take-charge, can-do peace avatar right now to buck the old taboo about not going over the president’s head and do a little strategic gladhanding of our enemies. Pelosi and Kerry have pretty well exploded that taboo already; he’d simply be pushing it a bit further, as she once thought of doing. Think too how it’ll embarrass cynical conservatives like me, who have come to regard so much of his “new brand of politics” as stunts dressed up as principles to be discarded the moment they no longer serve any electoral purpose. This would be the ultimate rebuke to that theory, and might even earn him a landslide in the process: We keep hearing how tired Americans are of Bush’s recalcitrance in not talking to terrorist states (or at least, not all of them) so he could surely leverage the visit into some sweet battleground victories. Exit question to sweeten the pot: If he goes to Tehran and does the grab ‘n grin with Khamenei or Ahmadinejad, we all agree to lay off him about not meeting with Petraeus, okay?

And after his trip to Iran and nothing changes, the glow of the messiah will dim. He will be seen for what he is…an incompetent hack. That’s why he won’t go.

How about he takes Paterson, Ayers, Wright, Pflogger,
Farrakhan, Carter, and the California Supreme Court with him for the victory tour?

Jaibones on May 30, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Hey, why stop at just meeting with the Iranians? Why not go over there and negotiate a non-aggression treaty with them (Zbig has all that leftover negotiating experience from the Carter Administation), sign it, and say you’ll have it ratified by Congress as soon as you take office in January, 2009?

Aren’t Americans barred from traveling to Iran?

Second, there’s the Logan Act, a law which forbids American citizens from negotiating with foreign governments without US government approval.

Yeah, I know: why isn’t Jimmy Carter (among others) in jail? The law, to my knowledge, has never been enforced.

Third, it would be improper for him to go.

OTOH, why doesn’t Iran come out and just say that with a change of policy by the US (hint, hint) that they would be willing to discuss all issues, including weapons programs with the US.

A little olive branch to Obama? Though, it could backfire.

Wonder how sophisticated the Iranian understanding is of American politics?

ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: Should you decide to travel to Iran despite the current Travel Warning, a passport and visa are required.

That’s the old paradigm. This is the new Hopenchange paradigm I’m talking about. No one’s going to prosecute him; the GOP would probably pay for his ticket. Rock this, Barry!

grab ‘n grin

grip n’ grin?

Anyway…

If he goes to Tehran and does the grab ‘n grin with Khamenei or Ahmadinejad, we all agree to lay off him about not meeting with Petraeus, okay?

If he did this right now, I assume that he would be doing the former under the auspices of the present Commander in Chief. Otherwise, the answer is hell-to-the-no. As a matter of fact he would catch it worse from me.

What part of stay-in-your-lane is not understandable? Just because Democrats think that rules are made to be broken doesn’t mean that they are. I’m not adopting moral relativism–especially not for a cipher like Obama.

baldilocks on May 30, 2008 at 7:58 PM

Think what it would do for Obama’s delusions of grandeur to step of the plane and walk down the boulevard that Iran built for the 12th Imam’s return.

Iranians aren’t stupid — some of them are crazy, sure, but most of them are not stupid. If they were to get the opportunity to help put a naive, weak, inexperienced, and ineffectual man into the White House, do you seriously think they wouldn’t jump at the chance? If candidate Obama went to Iran, the Iranians would promise him something big to make him look good (if only until after November 2008) because they, like Hamas and Fidel Castro, want the U.S. to have a weak and foolish President.

It doesn’t matter whether Obama meets with Iran’s leaders or Bush delivers another speech about the Axis of Evil. Iran is the big winner, the largest beneficiary from the war in Iraq. All the whining in the world isn’t going to change that reality. Get over it.

I miss the fainting and the “funny feeling up my leg” days. Why couldn’t Obama hang on and lock up the nomination before the skeleton parade?
How big is his closet?

I want him to win the nomination.

Then I expect McCain to win in a Reagan vs. Mondale style landslide.

Even while the GOP is struggling to find conservative candidates, the Dems are finding a way to lose the election. Thanks for small favors…

Obama wouldn’t have the guts to meet with Petraeus after that. I doubt that Obama has ever been in a fight in his life. Seriously. Not that Petraeus would waste skin on him.

Sure, you fired her, but then there’s your other Iraq adviser that called for 60,000-80,000 troops to remain in Iraq until 2010. You could see why people might start to wonder if you’re not just planning on implementing business as usual when you get into office.

This was my prediction.

PT Obarnum is going to change the designation of troops from “combat brigades” to “non-combat brigades” and leave them in Iraq.

drjohn on May 31, 2008 at 8:55 AM

What he has to say to the Iranians will bring peace to the Middle East and he isn’t going to say it UNLESS he is elected Prez. Kind of like John Fing Kerry and his Suuuper Seeekret plan to win the war in Iraq.
