Priest at GOP dinner prays: God, tell Obama to find a new pastor

posted at 11:11 am on May 30, 2008 by Allahpundit

Courtesy of ABC, Politico, and the New York Observer, which clearly intend this as some sort of tu quoque for the latest outburst from “longtime Obama friend” Michael Pfleger, whose own political opinions veer less towards praying for people to find new spiritual guidance and more towards threatening to snuff them out. Tacky, tacky business here to do it in the form of a prayer, in his clerical collar no less; he’s smirking throughout too so his aim seems, shall we say, less than pious. The irony is, Wright’s (and Pfleger’s) rhetoric is sufficiently pernicious that you can imagine a prayer like this being said in earnest, a point echoed in St. Barack’s own statements at that last press conference about the scales having fallen from his eyes about what Wright really believes. Follow the link to the Sun-Times up above and read down to the end about how “stunned” his team was to find Pfleger — Michael Pfleger — spitting the same kind of poison.

Update: Which isn’t to suggest I’m judging Pfleger. Being white, I don’t have that right.

Tacky? Yes. It sure as hell is amusing though!

Welcome to Shecky’s House of Prayer. Come in. Try the veal…..it comes with a side of salvation.

Where’s the Racism in this Allah? Is this at McCain’s Church? This isn’t even worth comparing. You’re diminishing Pfleger by equating the two.

Here come the smorgasbord jokes.

I don’t think he was AYN. I think he was saying that the ABC, Politico and the New York Observer were intending to draw that comparison.

AYNBLAND on May 30, 2008 at 11:24 AM

How is he equating the two?

All he’s saying is it was a bad move on the priest’s part, and it was.

Esthier on May 30, 2008 at 11:33 AM

He probably shouldn’t have done it during a prayer but he’s not behind a pulpit.

roux on May 30, 2008 at 11:34 AM

It is racist because he is a white person telling a black person what to do. Its as obvious as the nose on my face.

elBarto on May 30, 2008 at 11:34 AM

I believe God has a sense of humor, and will hear the prayer. The smirking is knowing that Obama wouldn’t ever stoop down from his god-like status to bow before the real King of Kings. That takes real courage, less rage.

kirkill on May 30, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Good gracious! Lighten up! It’s not like he got up there and said the KKK of the USA injected aids into the black population or something. ; )

kirkill on May 30, 2008 at 11:34 AM

You’ve got to be kidding me. Although I’m not blessed with faith, the one thing I can say without question is that if there is a God, He has never demonstrated a sense of humor. What He has demonstrated is needless cruelty, selfishness, irrational vindictiveness, an never-ending desire for praise, and an unwillingness to communicate effectively.

Maybe God’s a woman?

right2bright on May 30, 2008 at 11:44 AM

I agree. Faith and prayer need not be humorless.

mikeyboss on May 30, 2008 at 11:48 AM

It is allowed for a priest to have a sense of humor. This was not a sermon in a church. It was a political event. It was nothing more than a gentle chiding done in good humor.

Connie on May 30, 2008 at 11:48 AM

AYNBLAND on May 30, 2008 at 11:24 AM

I don’t think Allah was equating the two, but you can bet the media will. In fact, you should expect Pfleger to drop completely off the media radar screen while this incident is beaten into McCain’s heart with a sledgehammer. If there’s one thing about Republicans that never ceases to amaze and horrify me, it’s their basic inability to understand that the rules are different for them. They need to approach every public event reminding themselves the press is looking for a way to twist everything they say against them – but they don’t. Instead, you get a baffled politician with “macaca” branded on his forehead, watching in confusion as his political career goes swirling down the toilet. If this priest really wanted to weigh in on the Pfleger controversy, he should have done so with the utmost heartfelt sincerity, and without the slightest trace of a smirk.

Doctor Zero on May 30, 2008 at 11:48 AM

He has never demonstrated a sense of humor.

If you are accepting for the sake of argument the premise that there is a God, and God created man – then if man has a sense of humor, couldn’t that have come from the creator?

Also, consider the ostrich.

mikeyboss on May 30, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Of course, my concern is about retaining the White House. Assbites like this do that cause certain damage considering the battle underway.

Lately it’s sort of been fun seeing the Dems as the “Stupid Party”. Give them the space to allow me continued enjoyment.

Please.

And clearly an avowed atheist who posts videos of humping robots is eminently qualified to comment on what is both tactful and pious.

Nichevo on May 30, 2008 at 12:27 PM

I for one thought it very canned humor, and given his appearance, I’d say he’s a liturgical preacher, not particularly given to humor as part of his public speaking. In poor taste, you say? Consider what people have said from a certain pulpit in Chicago under the guise of sheperds and minders of the Church, and tell me which is in poor taste: A weakly spoken joke at a political event, or Wright’s & Pfleger’s bile on a Sunday morning, guised and gilded as Hominy? At least this Parson knows it’s said as humor.

Spc Steve on May 30, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Second request for an appearance by his majesty?

Connie on May 30, 2008 at 1:14 PM

Hello, I’m Barack Obama, and I would like to speak to you today about the importance of judging a man by what he promises to do in the future, rather than by his accomplishments, or the behavior of his friends. Like you, I have been absolutely shocked to discover that every single one of my friends is an anti-American lunatic, a cynical fire-breathing hate monger, or a terrorist sociopath. On the bright side, none of them have turned out to be all three at once yet! Remember that old movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers?” Well, that’s exactly how I feel right now. To top it all off, I’m still wrestling with the stunning discovery that my wife is an America-hating spoiled rotten elitist, and when I tried to take comfort in the wisdom of my father, I was amazed to learn he was a die-hard Communist. I think you’ll agree that one of the most remarkable things about me is that I can rise above this sea of hatred and ignorance, borne aloft by the winds of Hope and Change. I’m struck by the similarities between myself and Scott McClellan, who is also a good and decent man of absolute honor and integrity who was forced to live a life of silent, helpless rage as he was surrounded by evil. How many Sunday mornings did we share a mystic connection, as I sat and gnawed at my lip while my pastor spewed venom to the throngs of cheering morons seated in the pews around me, while Mr. McClellan was forced to mouth the empty propaganda of an Administration he hated from the depths of his gentle, innocent soul? With your help, I believe I can bring poor Scotty a noble administration he will be proud to serve in, and a noble message of Hope and Change he will be proud to repeat. Meanwhile, I will actually begin to listen to what people around me are saying, and you can count on me to speak up when the leaders of Iran begin spitting the kind of bile my pastor threw in my face for twenty years. I have decades of barely-suppressed righteous rage, which I am ready to unleash on the very next person who says something unkind about Jews in my presence. Thank you, and good night.
