Are you ready for Vice President Sarah Palin?

Via the Standard, Wizbang’s got a hot tip that the head of McCain’s VP search team is on the ground in Juneau. If it’s true, though, then why not advertise that fact? It’d kick up some buzz … although maybe that’s the problem. If they finally end up going with some more predictable choice, like Ridge or Mitt, it’ll feel like a letdown.
I’m cool to the idea of her on the ticket but less so than I used to be. The Spectator likes her as balance for our old-coot nominee, although I’m not sure why when the main line of attack on Obama this fall will be that he’s not an old coot, i.e. that he’s too young and inexperienced to handle the job. Palin’s been governor for two years, which is longer than Jindal but still less time than Obama’s been a senator. If he’s not ready, why is she ready to inherit the presidency at a moment’s notice if, god forbid, McCain’s age gets the better of him? Needless to say, her home state’s no electoral prize either, and given her approval rating (in the 80s, last I checked) can probably be delivered if she simply campaigns for him there as a regular ol’ supporter.
So why am I warming up to her? First because the GOP needs new faces, figuratively and literally, and as faces go you can scarcely do better than hers right now (figuratively and literally). Read Fred Barnes’s profile of her from last summer: She’s excellent on ethics, has experience with energy policy, and maintains balance on the environment, opposing the polar bear ruling but calling for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Second, obviously, having her on the ticket would steal some of Obama’s media juice as the candidate with the Narrative versus the same old patrician Republican crap. And third, well, watch this. We’re not going to win the woman vote, but there are surely some Ferraros out there disgruntled enough about how Hillary was treated to give McCain/Palin a very close look. That’s why it’s silly, actually, to care how many electoral votes Alaska would deliver. Her appeal, unlike Crist’s or Ridge’s, has to do with who she is, not where she’s from. Who’s to say she wouldn’t help deliver Florida or Pennsylvania more than either of them?
Exit question: Could Obama force McCain to put Palin on the ticket? Word is he’s looking closely at Kathleen Sebelius for his own VP, doubtless in part to make amends to those same disgruntled Ferraroesque Hillary supporters. How does the GOP recycle the old two-headed white-guy model with a pair like that on the other side?
Damn it, this calls for a poll!

Palin was there at the ranch over the weekend…she was cooking and cleaning for the boys.
C’mon, her husband is a commercial fisherman, she is life long NRA, negotiated great contracts from the oil companies, took on the RNC to get rid of the bad apples. Has a sense of humor, understands energy and the way the energy compainies work, ardent Right to Life…the bottom line, can she bring in more net votes then Romney? Romney has his assets. Prettier hair, dresses nicely, and um, um, um,…

Get real. The only way Mccain can win is if he gets record evangelical turnout from all three parties.
He does not have that support now.
The only way he can get the record evangelical turnout+poor voters(populist support)is by nominating Mike Huckabee.

Yep ! ! Run Sarah, Run.
Texyank on May 29, 2008 at 5:23 PM
The candidate’s faith IS the most important reflection of that mans character.
It’s pretty obvious..if the man has no religion or practices a false religion.. you know he is a depraved sinner with no morals and is not to be trusted!
A politician(like Hussein O) could promise you the stars and moon..but if that MAN has no character what good are his promises?
Besides..the most important issues are not capitalist VS socialist issues or positions on war…(clearly they are losers in the general election also).
But the most imortant issues facing America are:
1. Ending the genocide that is happening through legalization of abortion. (which is far worse than nazi death camps genocide)
2. Stopping gay marriage from being condoned by our government. (homosexuality is a clear indicator of a society being in it’s last stages of decay)
3. Ending the theocratic reign of the official state religion of evolution/secular humanism. We must stop the brainwashing of our youth and end their unconstitutional ban on prayer in schools.
4.We must immediately stop all efforts to divide Israel (by forcing a palestinian terror state on them).
America has been given much as the world’s largest Christian nation and superpower but the secular humanist libs and RINO’s are working steadily to remove God’s blessing on this country.
Without God’s blessing and protection…America will surely be destroyed!
You can trust in the weapons of man(missle defense systems etc.) all you want….but without God’s protection they are useless!
Besides, the most likely way that America will be destroyed is not from launched nuclear weapons..but through jihadi suitcase nukes, smuggled into the country and detonated in major port cities. There is no defense from that scenario without God’s protection.
We know that KGB run Russia wants to destroy America and that they are supplying the fanatic satanist shia muslim with nukes..
Why would they supply an enemy of the U.S.(one that vows to detonate nukes in our cities)with nuclear weapons?
Because if the muslims nuke us..that is the only way russia can get away with destroying us.
For those of you aware of Bible prophecy…how can Gog/Magog(Russia and Iran) attack Israel, when Israel has us as it’s superpower ally?
The answer is they can’t until America is no longer a superpower..
SaintOlaf on May 29, 2008 at 5:24 PM
Palin may be an evangelical but she isn’t a known evangelical
very Dobsonian…announce 6 months out, and with zero knowledge of the candidate that they just aren’t Christian enough…

Good point
LtE126 on May 29, 2008 at 5:27 PM
Yes. She seems to have more of a steel backbone than any of the current crop we have in DC. I don’t want anyone from inside the beltway, and a woman on the ticket would be fantastic.

We need that more now than ever, even if McCain wins. No more Foleys or Craigs please. Clean the rot gut out of the GOP.
I always chuckle when the donkeys talk about voting for change, yet they keeping electing dinosaurs like Teddy Kennedy, Pelosi, Rangel, Byrd, et al.
If people in this country want change and the GOP needs a massive overhaul, do it with her and Jindal and even my Congressman, Paul Ryan. They are the ones who should take it out of the doldrums.

Dems pick first and McCain gets to counter with the best candidate, based on dates for the convention. She has not been vetted and Alaska is not a swing state, let me say that last part again. Alaska is not a swing state. Assuming Hillary is not the VP and BO picks a man with military experience (Wes Clark or Webb) a woman would be a great counter. A southern woman would be best, Kay Bailey Hutchinson.

So you want ANOTHER Senator to be the VP?

She brings 50% of the population into play. Actually, since she’s cute, she might bring the other half in as well:)
faraway on May 29, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Palin’s 2 years running a state government, vs. Obama’s 2-1/2 years cashing a U.S. Senate paycheck while spending all his time campaigning for President?
Unless running for President counts as “experience,” I’d say her experience definitely trumps his.
AZCoyote on May 29, 2008 at 6:24 PM
She could be the push that I need to vote for McCain.
And damn, she’s a cutie. One of the perks of conservatism: The women.
MadisonConservative on May 29, 2008 at 6:35 PM
You’d have to search really hard to find someone who has less experience than Ubama…Palin is one person who fits the bill though.
First: Take away our advantage of governor vs. senator by nominating a senator and validating the libs experience..check.
Second: Again take away our experience advantage by picking the one person less qualified than Ubama…Palin…check.
Third: Chase away the evangelicals and conservatives by nominating pro amnesty pro abortion Mccain….check.
If Mccain really is a dem operative he is doing a great job of winning the election for them.
SaintOlaf on May 29, 2008 at 6:42 PM
Uh, no. And TX ain’t gonna be a swing state either.

WOW! This lady has the chops to be the first female president for sure. Do the right thing McCain.
myamphibian on May 29, 2008 at 6:51 PM
I’m not one that really cares all that much who’s in the VP position. I vote for the person at the head of the ticket. So, if it’s Palin that’s fine. I would also really like to Lieberman on the ticket. I think that would demonstrate how much the Democrats have become isolationists. The only person I listed on the poll that I wouldn’t like to see in the ticket is Huckabee.
terryannonline on May 29, 2008 at 6:54 PM
you are sounding the Troll horn!
Palin has also been a Mayor. She turned a dieing community around to the point it it thriving so well that they are asking the State of Alaska to give up land so they can develope on it! How many other places in the Country have that going on besides Large Cities?
Also she just vetoed 269 million for the Budget here in my own State…. which is HUGE! What other Gov is doing that? Sure as heck isn’t Michigan or Florida!
get off your Huck Horse before it turns around and bites you!
upinak on May 29, 2008 at 6:56 PM
No way! Hillary’s devoted female supporters are strongly pro-choice, McCain is not. They will not choose McCain over Obama.
terryannonline on May 29, 2008 at 6:58 PM
I like the idea of Gov. Palin joining the ticket, since she has actual executive experience (albeit only 2 years as Governor) and appears to be a real fiscal conservative. My fear is that if McCain picks her, Obama will feel obliged to offer the Dem VP slot to Hillary, and then we’re all skee-reewwwed!!! :-P
Mary in LA on May 29, 2008 at 7:00 PM
I know it’s been said before.. but this is the first picture I’ve seen of her.. damn, she’s hot..
she would melt the ticket if McCain put her on it..
Let my other head do the voting in November :)
DaveC on May 29, 2008 at 7:06 PM
Not all of them will do the abortion litmus test. My mom is pro-choice and a Hillary supporter who is going to vote McCain over Obama.
I’m a pro-choice republican military wife who is going to vote McCain in spite of his strong pro-life record. I voted for Bush in 2004 and voted for Reagan and Bush 41 the same way.
funky chicken on May 29, 2008 at 7:07 PM
Obama will look like a follower, not a leader, I think that this will force Obama not to choose a female.
right2bright on May 29, 2008 at 7:11 PM
Okay, some of his posts are strange, this one is straight out of troll land.
right2bright on May 29, 2008 at 7:13 PM
Yes, there will be pro-choice female Hillary supporters who aren’t single issue voters and will consider other things. However, I attended a Hillary rally and there was priest passing out pro-life literature and the anger towards him was palpable. I head a lot of name calling. I’m just saying there are some females who abortion is on the top of their concerns and will not vote for a pro-life candidate over a pro-choice candidate. Just like some evangelicals who would not vote for Rudy.
terryannonline on May 29, 2008 at 7:19 PM
She out evangelizes Huckabee, all the evangelists should be excited about her. She is there kind of candidate, very pro-life, isn’t afraid of taking on the insiders…one question, what is her stand on the border and immigration?
right2bright on May 29, 2008 at 7:19 PM
She sent National Guard soldiers down to start and begun the border fence. I think that answers your question.
upinak on May 29, 2008 at 7:21 PM
This would be good. The problem with her as the VP though, is, you have to vote McCain to get her.
JellyToast on May 29, 2008 at 7:25 PM
It doesn’t matter to me who Juan McCain picks as VP, he’s still an “old coot” and way too liberal for my taste.

THE CHOSEN ONE,
I was wondering what happened to you.
SaintOlaf on May 29, 2008 at 7:59 PM
I like what I’m reading in that Fred Barnes profile. Her taking on the corrupt Republican hierarchy of Alaska’s power structure sounds like it’s right up the Maverick’s alley. If she can just get rid of Ted Stevens she’d get my vote. Hell, she’s already got it.
I’d love to see McCain pick her and force Obama into picking Sebelius. Obama/Sebelius would be the most dovish pair ever to run as a ticket. He would lose all of Jacksonian America with one stroke. I’m sorry, I don’t care how much of a Democratic year this is, America hasn’t gotten that soft that they’d elect a pair like that.
Dudley Smith on May 29, 2008 at 8:00 PM
This seems like a terrific idea here. Barrack became famous from his speech at the Dem Convention and now look at him. Hollow, socialist, Mr. Perfect with a Teleprompter, etc - and he is going to be the nominee. Republicans need a new face, a conservative with some scruples - and Sarah Palin could be the future we conservatives could rely on. Even if McCain loses with her on the ticket, my guess is that she could become part of our future and we could start thinning out the repubicans that we are having to stomach now. Please, please, please, please…… I may have to start paying attention again and may even change my affiliation back to Republican after all.

McCain may very well ask Jindal. That’s a stupid thing to do politically in that Jindal is not very experienced according to the grand scheme of things. He’ll be a lot more formidable after he’s cleaned up LA.
However, McCain’s asking Jindal would be understandable.
What would be truly messed up would be Jindal accepting. I don’t know if refusing the VP slot is /bad/ for the old career, but Jindal would only prove in my mind that his ambition is greater than his duty.

davenp35 on May 29, 2008 at 8:23 PM
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Jonah @ NRO was on about her yesterday, and Goldfarb @ the Worldwide digs her, too. I’ve been banging the, um, drum about her with my peeps for a while.
She’s a GOP rockstar. Her approval ratings in AK are in the NINETIES.
This is such a no-brainer choice for McCain I can’t believe anyone else is even being seriously considered.
Agree with others that if she’s the pick, there’s no upside to waiting — announce the pick ahead of Barry announcing his. Hell, announce it before the Dems have even settled their rolling catastrophe of a nomination process. Be nice to suck some of the oxygen out of that perpetual train wreck for once.
Another upside: it would annoy K-Lo over at NRO. She seems to think women aren’t capable of being both a US VP and a mom to a young son at the same time.
Purple Fury on May 29, 2008 at 8:25 PM
All hyperbole aside, that’s because she hasn’t done anything yet. As soon as a conflict with the opposition comes about, look for those ratings to drop big time. Politicians usually enjoy high ratings when they are new on the scene and haven’t ruffled any feathers.

There are plenty of acceptable candidates really.

misterpeasea on May 29, 2008 at 9:49 PM
Blatantly untrue. She’s done nothing if not ruffle feathers. She’s taken on the entire (corrupt) Republican establishment at the Alaskan state AND Congressional levels. She’s wielded record-breaking vetoes for close to half a billion (with a B) dollars worth of excess fat in two years’ worth of pork-bloated Alaskan state budgets. She’s antagonizing environmentalists with her position on the polar bear issue and various oil & energy interests over her energy initiatives.
Not bad for a first term governor halfway thru her first term. And a LONG damn way from not having “done anything yet”.
Seriously — it sounds like you haven’t read the Barnes piece or any of the other info out there about her on the web. Check it out - I think you’ll see that she’s been ruffling feathers left & right.

Ed,
AK is a unique state. One of the smallest in terms of population, less than 700K by 2007 data. And, probably much smaller considering fulltime residents since many go south for the winter. Undoubtedly, a great state where hunters, trappers, pilots, and oilmen abound, but pretty far out of the mainstream I would say. Unless this women has tons of charisma and speaking ability, I would say she adds nothing much to the ticket and possibly is a net negative considering her inexperience. As has been noted here in the past, McCain’s VP better be ready to carry the torch if he drops out of the fight for one reason or another. Just sayin…
Nozzle on May 29, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Agreed. If one insists on a woman, I’d pick Sue Myrick, Congresswoman from NC. She’s as tough as nails, and on the issues would chew Obama and his wife and his veep choice and the democrat party up and spit them out then eat them up again. Delicious.

Some public officials are best left precisely where they are. Jindal is one such. And with the polar bear nonsense Palin is another. We need her to spearhead the attack on this ridiculous listing and its global warming baggage. THEN the party should find a very good way to reward her appropriately.
If she pulls this off it’d make this woman particularly pleased to vote for her in the future for President.

moxie_neanderthal on May 30, 2008 at 6:43 AM
The three greatest internal threats America faces today are political correctness, environmental extremism and antiscientific religiosity. Now that Huckabee has been trotted off to the glue factory one may hope that the inane discourse of the young Earther nuts will retire to the touring revival show.
Palin would be a credible voice on the environmental front and many of the important questions can only be addressed at the federal level.
I’ve heard no candidate from either party address political correctness, except to propose mire of it. When they start ceding ground to Shari’a law as they are now doing in Europe, then the 7th century express will drag us all back to the bronze age.
Annar on May 30, 2008 at 6:45 AM
Well, here is someone who hasn’t read the links…anytime you grab the RNC (if you’re a Republican) by feet, turn them upside down and shake the corruption out of their pockets, you get my vote. She went up against the establishment, they tried to punish her, she said “up yours” and sits at a high rating in AK (only one seal and a dog sled team voted against her). Plus proved she isn’t in the pocket of the oil companies, knows how to manage oil projects in environmentally sensitive areas is a bonus (and NRA and fishes).
Both the DNC and the RNC need people like this, honest, ethical, caring politicians. Politicians like her around and it is no longer voting for the less of two evils. If we can get her kind first in a high office, we win. The DNC will never accept someone like her. She is their worse nightmare, an honest, ethical politician that is pro-life with a husband that actually has a real world blue collar job.
