GMail does NOT require a cell phone number… I don’t think they even ASK for one. (That wouldn’t make sense.)

They used to. During the beta you had to confirm your invitation via text message or something like that. I don’t remember exactly what it was, but I remember that you did have to do it. I don’t think they ask for it anymore though.

Figured you weren’t Dvorak, but one of his mottoes is “I get no spam.” Always makes me laugh when I hear it.

I echo others – gmail is a nice way to keep your inbox spam-free, and your spam folder free of false positives.

As to the China connection – most of the kids I talked with in China didn’t bother with Google. They either stuck with Baidu, or used proxies that let them bypass the Great Firewall of China.

While we’re on the topic, though, they have a phenominal mobile web interface that is almost as functional as the desktop iterface… but without the IMing and whatnot.

I believe there will come a time when the content you allow Google to data mine will be used against you. When you sign up for gmail you also are required to give them your cell phone number. Your cell phone could be used to track your location and movement.

We’re not there yet, but we’re building an infrastructure where a tyranny could use this technology to quickly identify, locate, and silence voices of dissent. Imagine, for a moment, that people who agree with Olbermann know how to find you, arrest you, and use your own written words against you to say that you are a fascist who most closely shares the mentality of the terrorists.

Don’t think you’re important enough that they care what you are saying in your communication. In exchange for getting the best mail client out there for absolutely free, you agree to let an algorithm feed ads to you based on the content of what’s on the page at any given time.

I think North Korea would be less likely to become a more free and open country if Google and Wal-Mart were allowed to prop up its economy to their own benefit. Profit making by itself is not exposure to the free world.

Not that permanent economic lockdown is any more likely to lead North Korea to freedom. I just think its unlikely in either case. If you want to convince me then offer an argument of why its true.
