Are you ready for Secretary of State John Kerry?

Just when I thought I couldn’t like Obama more, the ultimate pot sweetener.

Kerry aides insist he’s not angling for the job and point to his long involvement in foreign affairs. It started with his famous testimony as a 27-year-old veteran questioning the Vietnam War before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It continues today, at age 64, as the No. 3 Democrat on the same panel.

But envisioning him in the post would hardly be a stretch given Obama’s chances at securing the Democratic nomination, a general election shaping up as a “change” campaign and Kerry’s relationship with the Illinois senator.

Kerry would likely face competition from Sen. Joseph R. Biden of Delaware, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee; Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, a former Peace Corps volunteer who also sits on the panel, and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota, a top Obama adviser.

In a strange way I’d find it reassuring to have Waffles lead the delegation to Tehran, and not just because of the comic potential of him posing for photos with a guy he once claimed he wanted to push off a cliff. Thanks to his infamous “global test” for U.S. military action, his preoccupation with the moral high ground he believes we’ve somehow lost to, ahem, Iran, and his willingness to undermine American foreign policy by hobnobbing with assorted enemies (an old habit), he’s become the exemplar of the sort of groveling, negotiation-from-weakness posture that conservatives fear Obama will take. If that’s what Obama’s planning, he might as well name Kerry and own it.

An interesting subplot here: Because of Kennedy’s illness, if Kerry’s appointed it could conceivably lead to both senate seats in Massachusetts being vacant, a remarkable coincidence considering that they only seem to be earnestly contested once every 30 or 40 years. Exit question: Do we stand a chance at picking one up or are they just going to plug Caroline and Patches in there and ride that out until 2040 or so? I’m guessing the latter; as it is, we can’t even get on the ballot.

I’m a princpled conservative, I will vote for Bob Barr over the RINO mccain and stick to my guns. So what if that will help seal the deal for President Obama, Sec. of State Kerry, AG John Edwards and putting idiots like Zbieniensky back in power in the Jihadist world in which we live. So what if this administration will also have large majorities in the House and Senate and plenty of SCOTUS picks….

Whats the worse that could happen?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on May 28, 2008 at 4:08 PM

Down memory lane.

Around this time in 2004, Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts had all but locked up the Democratic presidential nomination and was beginning to think about his vice presidential choices.

You may recall there was a strong push for him to consider a “unity ticket” and choose the leading maverick in the GOP as his running mate — a “dream team,” as onetime Kerry strategist Chris Lehane put it.

The same name was also the first one Kerry offered when asked by radio host Don Imus in May 2004 whom he would name as Secretary of Defense.

Who was this inspiring individual? “Our good friend John McCain,” as Kerry described his fellow Vietnam veteran on the Imus show.

Yes, the same John McCain who’s now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

More down memory lane.

WASHINGTON — Former national security adviser Samuel Berger stepped aside from his work as a foreign-policy adviser to Democrat John Kerry’s presidential campaign Tuesday, after Berger acknowledged that he had mishandled classified documents that were under review by the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks.

“Mr. Berger has a lot of explaining to do,” House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said. He said Berger had “pilfered documents.”

Some Republicans, including White House spokesman Scott McClellan and Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz. and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., were more restrained than their party colleagues. McCain called Berger “a fine and honorable man who we should presume innocent until proven guilty.”

appst38 on May 28, 2008 at 4:38 PM

McCain and foreign policy.

Much scorn deservedly came Governor Mike Huckabee’s way when, in his own Foreign Affairs piece, he scalded the “Bush administration’s arrogant bunker mentality,” so “counterproductive at home and abroad.” Yet McCain’s very similar (if less-bracing) riffs have drawn little attention. The Bush years, he says, have left us in desperate need “to restore and replenish the world’s faith in our nation and our principles.” “America” thus “needs a president who can revitalize the country’s purpose and standing in the world.” Even as such important European governments as France and Germany have become more conservative and drawn closer to American leadership, McCain laments that President Bush has “frayed” the “bonds we share with Europe” — thanks, no doubt, to “the kind of abusive tactics properly prohibited by the Geneva Conventions” that he intimates have been standard fare.

Close your eyes, and you can hear these same lines regurgitated by any conventional Democrat, whether it’s Sen. Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama, or even Sen. John Kerry — the Democrats’ last standard-bearer who, you may recall, entreated McCain to be his running mate, the extent of their common ground being patent. Contrary to the assurances of McCain’s admirers, his own essay tells us the senator is still the same guy who in 2000, upon being asked what he would do immediately upon being elected president, said he would turn, among others, to Sen. Kerry, Sen. Joe Biden, and Zbigniew Brzezinski (President Jimmy Carter’s national-security adviser) to “to get foreign policy, national security issues back on track.”

This would probably be a good thing, really. If Obama wins, the more incompetent the people he puts in power the faster the nation will metaphorically drop its pants and get hit again, which is apparently the only thing that serves anymore to wake the populace from its increasingly deep, socialism-induced slumber. 9/11 shook the bed briefly, though it’s largely been forgotten amidst the media whitewash and partisan noise of the subsequent years. While it’s an ugly thing to think, maybe having a city or two wiped off the map by a foreign power is actually what’s required to leave a lasting imprint in the public mind.
