Social cons to McCain: Just say no to Crist as VP

David Brody puts a finger in the wind. Lots of reasons are given, Crist’s squishiness on abortion (and, related, Schiavo) foremost among them, but I confess that I came away from the piece with the same impression as Marc Ambinder about the real dealbreaker lurking in the shadows here. Part of me wonders if that’s just me reading my own stereotypes of social conservatives onto the sample Brody surveyed, but some of the language is sufficiently loaded — hinting that Crist’s “not one of us,” wondering why McCain hasn’t said much about the California gay marriage ruling — that I don’t think I am. Besides, Romney’s been squishy on abortion too and plenty of social cons (although certainly not all) are fine with him.
Whatever the truth is about Crist, while I’m happy to take him at his word and frankly wouldn’t care either way, plenty of people won’t be and some will consider it grounds to stay home. It is, after all, unthinkable for an openly gay pol to be on the GOP ticket — or on the Democratic ticket, for that matter. Then again, what exactly are his qualifications to be on the ticket in the first place? He’s been governor for three years and a state AG for four before that, plus ten years in the state legislature. He’s roughly as experienced as, ahem, Barack Obama. If not for the fact that he’s from a key swing state, no one would pay him attention, and thanks to McCain’s support among Latinos we may not even need any extra help in Florida this year. Like I said the other day in a different context, if you’re going to play chicken with evangelicals by putting a pro-choicer on the ticket, why not make a run at Pennsylvania by naming Ridge?

I hate McCain as Prez, but I’d be more likely to vote for him if Hunter was veep.

Hunter may seem too much like Cheney in mannerisms

Mitt for VP!

Brownback seems pretty good except for his extreme abortion views
PrezHussein on May 27, 2008 at 5:54 PM
Just wanted to point out that Christians should not be labeled exclusively as social conservatives. It’s a little insulting. They are more well-rounded than that. Just because they are against things like abortion and gay marriage should not stereotype them. Christians are not only social conservatives, they are economic conservatives and defense conservatives. Christians are business owners, they are political leaders, they are… hey, isn’t the majority of United States Military Christian? Christian’s are more than social conservatives and should be recognized as such. Just wanted to make that distinction. No offense to anyone.

That and he is a slut for pork
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 6:16 PM
No more than the nation, and alot of those Christians are annoying.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 6:17 PM
Jeb Bush, anyone?
SouthernGent on May 27, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Jeb was not an outstanding governor, I think his talents would be more legislative than executive.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 6:21 PM
Ditto and Amen!
This distinction/perception has been bugging me too apacalyps. Thanks.
Rovin on May 27, 2008 at 6:28 PM
He’s too tan. Anybody who so vainly obsesses about their skin tone will easily cave to peer pressure. And yes, I’m speaking from experience.
coffee260 on May 27, 2008 at 6:28 PM
How about just NO to anybody McCain likes?
If McCain hates him, I want him.
EJDolbow on May 27, 2008 at 6:35 PM
I can think of no surer way to assure the choice of Crist than for social cons to oppose him.
Charles Martel on May 27, 2008 at 6:42 PM
This is always a joke about Gov Crist. He is a Greek by decent, that is his natural complexion.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 6:44 PM
This is the best way to get my vote.

DaveS on May 27, 2008 at 6:51 PM
There’s a bigger issue here… McCain’s private support for letting gay marriage take effect, state by state, without trying to stop it.
Crist is gay, so I’ve been told (so what), BUT the big issue here is that we know that neither Thompson nor Huck would have courted or seriously befriended Crist. McCain may not choose Crist, BUT their friendship and McCain’s willingness to place him on the shortlist and pull him into the inner circle tells me that McCain is sending a signal to the moderate wing (not socialist) of the gay community. He’s saying he’s NOT a homophobe, and he’s saying that under his Presidency, gays will gain additional “rights”. Yadayada.
Just my opinion,… but it makes sense.
BTW: He seemed very uncomfortable answering Ellen’s marriage questions on her show last week. I think his discomfort stems from his disdain for having to be against gay marriage, not for being asked about it.
Gartrip on May 27, 2008 at 7:00 PM
He is right to leave it up to the states, it is not some “scheme”
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 7:08 PM
Quite a liberal word game your playing there, allah. That sentance means exactly what it says, crist is an out of the closet liberal trying to single handedly destroy the economy of Florida so he can institute a state income tax. The media keeps saying how incredibly popular he is and you guys keep repeating it. I imagine he’s pretty popular with the hundreds of thousands of democrat voters he took off the property tax rolls forever but conservatives in this state know exactly what a liberal creep the guy is.
But I guess you ny republicans know all about us homophobic southern conservatives.

What, you call me a troll and make a gay joke and then leave?
I figured we could at least cuddle afterwards.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 8:08 PM
That wasn’t the question you idiot. I was saying that Christian’s are more than just “social conservatives” by pointing out a large proportion of the military’s active duty personnel are Christian. I’ve seen reports that between 30 and 40 percent of the US military are now fundamentalist Christians (ahem, like me!). And more than 60 percent of military chaplains are evangelicals, okay. Alot of these people you deem “annoying” are risking their lives to protect you and your dense comments.. lol .. Everyone has the right to be stupid but you abuse the privilege.
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 8:11 PM
No love for Bobby Jindal? He’s younger than Obama and has a wealth of policy-related experience. Sure he may be a bit callow on IR issues, but he’s probably a fast learner and anyways would have great teachers.
gstevens97 on May 27, 2008 at 8:16 PM
Which is the bad part, now they feel like they can move with impunity, evangelize on the job and generally make life difficult for people like me (Jewish) who just want to serve the country.
Which makes seeking counseling from Naval Chaplains all the more difficult.
Since I am risking my life to protect your rights to call one of those servicemembers “Stupid” because he is annoyed by the glut of evangenlicals who make his time at work uncomfortable.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 8:19 PM
You crack me up, Squid Shark.
Thanks for your service, btw.

Nice to see you, techno, your welcome.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 8:21 PM
Buckets O’ Love for Bobby Jindal. But it’s important for him to keep his promises and follow through with the good work he’s currently doing down in Louisiana.
Bobby’s time will come. Unlike Comrade Obambi, when Jindal runs, he’ll have a lot of experience under his belt.
I’ve long prefered someone like Michael Steele for VP. I think it would be a smart move on several important levels.
techno_barbarian on May 27, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Best. Freudian. Slip. Ever.
aengus on May 27, 2008 at 8:34 PM
You know it, Rovin. Very often this is a tactic used to netralize Christians. They put them into the little “social con” category where they can blame them whenever they want, “Oh, those social cons (ie, meaning the Christians) they’re being unreasonable again… bad Christian.. or whatever.. blah blah.” It’s terribly demeaning to Christians everywhere, not to mention those serving in the Armed forces and their families.
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 8:37 PM

Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 8:43 PM
You know whats demeaning to us Jews, getting handouts from you end times obsessed Christians who support Israel just so the Anti-Christ can betray us, thanks but no thanks.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 8:45 PM
You spew alot of garbage and quite frankly the way you speak I highly doubt you’re Jewish. In fact, I think you’re a phony, and I think you’re an enemy of the Jewish people. Let me guess, you like the Military Religious Freedom website which is trying to take away the rights of Christian evangelicals serving in the Military, the same Christians who are the Jewish people’s strongest ally? C’mon… tell us.
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 8:50 PM
HAHAHAH That is hilarious, you just cant believe that some of your people could possibly be interfering with their work life to make mine difficult.
I gave them a look but they are not my style, I prefer to confront those people mano a mano.
There is a sizable group of servicemen, perticularly in the Air Force that feel they are being crowded out. I have made alot of compromises in my faith to serve. I observe Shabbat on Sunday instead of Saturday while underway since most Navy folk traditionally rest on Sunday. I have worked for people on Christmas Day and Easter, but had to take leave to observe Yom Kippur (even though Christians get Christmas day off), so you can cry all you want about persecution, just please respect my desire to be left alone.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 8:59 PM
See my post above, thanks but no thanks.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 9:00 PM
You are so thoroughly offensive in every way. How DARE you question the faith of other people.
This is one of the reasons you and your fellow hollier than thous are so profoundly disliked.
You owe Squid an apology.
EJDolbow on May 27, 2008 at 9:03 PM
Whatever. Not your style… blah blah blah. Again, you avoid the question. I take it you agree with the Military Religious Freedom website when they say:
“The United States military is actively engaged in a pernicious and pervasive pattern and practice of unconstitutional rape of the precious religious freedoms of our honorable and noble sailors, soldiers, airmen, marines, national guard, reservists and veterans. This evil is a noxious, institutional force-feeding of fundamentalist Christianity by our nation’s military command structure in complete defiance of the United States Constitution.” SOURCE
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 9:06 PM
I dont expect one, this is so common I ignore it.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 9:06 PM
And I want to respond to this as well. Us Jews? Ha! You sound like a self-hating Jew (or self-loathing Jew) to me, who doesn’t know the first thing about the what it means to be Jewish. Trust me. You don’t speak for the Jews I know. You’re the type who does nothing but work tirelessly to destroy Israel. Lets get to some issues here. Let me guess you feel Israel should create a Palestinian state right?
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 9:08 PM
Ok I will speak slowly for you to understand…
I

There is alot of winking and nodding support for them, I do not think it is evil or a rape of the consitution. I think it is annoying and a bit disheartening that non-Christians are made to feel like some sort of sub-service member because of this prevalence.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 9:09 PM
What, messianics?
Riiiiight, that is it. I am not even going to dignify this statement with a response.
Nope, they already have a state called (Trans) Jordan.
If they want to live in Israel, they can be Israeli citizens.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 9:13 PM
I read the Old Testament just like he does. I can smell a phony like him a mile away. Funny, he comes in here insulting Christian’s left and right and you’re silent, that is until I start fighting back. You’re red shirt goes well with your eyes…
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 9:15 PM
Yeah, sure. You sounded like their spokeperson until you got confronted on it. Let me point out that I love the Jewish people. I would join the IDF and fight along side Jews if possible. “For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest” (Isaiah 62:1). Wish I could read some of your past posts here at HA. You give Jews a bad name. You are an enemy of Israel, and I stand by that.
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 9:31 PM
Nice, I am glad I have you to tell me what kind Jew I am. I am glad you would fight in the IDF, you would be welcome and not frowned upon for you faith. It would be nice.
Just because I wont sit back and take it quietly, I am not the kind of person who thinks that the military is “raping the Constitution”
And let me point out that I love most Christians, I married myself a lovely Christian girl and have even served on a few interfaith panels (my senior thesis was on Early Christianity and its evolution from a Jewish sect to a gentile religion).
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 9:46 PM
A mile away? Sheesh.
He hasn’t insulted Christians ‘left and right’. You went from zero to abusively indignant in nothing flat.
You definitely owe Squid an apology. You’re way out of line here.
You and some of the other self-proclaimed Christians here on HA have displayed some of the most intolerant, condescending, and indignant posts I’ve seen, all while wrapping yourselves in the unassailable armor plating of your faith.
This Christian cringes when he reads some of the crap you guys write. No one is ever Christian enough unless they agree with you. Jews can’t possibly be Jews if they disagree with you. A member of our Navy can’t possibly be who he says he is because he has an experience you cannot relate to? He has a secret agenda because you cannot be bothered take a look through his eyes?
Can you not see how completely offensive you are being? You guys are way too eager to persecute. It’s what you live and post for.
You should do some heavy duty praying about that.

I think we need a post of the week category, so that I can nominate techno.
Krydor on May 27, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Squid, you’re attitude only changed when I confronted you on the things you were saying about Christians. Go back and read. You started this, not me. All I said was Christians are not only social conservatives and suggested a large proprotion of United States Military were Christian. You responded, “No more than the nation, and alot of those Christians are annoying.” Then you go on to spew Military Religious Freedom’s propoganda that Christian’s are interfering with your rights to practice your faith, and that Christians are being demeaning to Jews, and only when you are confronted about your Christian hate propoganda do you start singing a different tune. Look, I don’t care what you believe. I am not anti-anything. I am for truth. If it’s truth, I’m for it. If it’s a lie, I’m against it. Just don’t lie. If you lie about Christians I am going to say something. I would die for Israel and I know other Christians who would too. Christianity is rooted in Judaism and we cannot separate ourselves from our roots, so quit lying about a group of people who remain “literally” the only remaining Gentile constituency anywhere willing to defend the besieged Jewish nation of Israel.
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Which served the purpose of implying what, that Christians are some sort of uber patriots?
Which is the case, the population is no greater than the national percentage, yet the evangelicals on the ship and in the chaplain corps are very obnoxious and can not keep it in the appropriate places.
They are not interfering, just a little annoying and demeaning.
You would not find any of those examples I provided a smidge demeaning if the shoe were on the other foot?
Were you with me on all my tours of duty, then how could you possibly say that I am lying? You cant because you dont know me from Adam.
So would I, but I am busy defending this country, my first homeland right at the moment.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Apacalyps,
You’re absolutely right.
Squid shark is without a doubt a non practicing, self hating jew, who hates israel and persecutes Christians at every opportunity that he can.
In fact he told me he hates the state of israel before.
SaintOlaf on May 27, 2008 at 11:06 PM
It is fairly unChristian of you to lie.
I am a practicing Conservative Jew, since I am a convert, it would be hard to be self hating.
Being married to a Christian hardly counts as persecution.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 11:08 PM
Do you tell your wife Jesus was just a dead jew on a stick too?
SaintOlaf on May 27, 2008 at 11:11 PM
That is a lie. There are many fine Christians posting at HA. Hmm, this attack is not suprising coming from you. We’ve had our run-in before and you have yet to commit yourself to the Bible, techno. The requirements for being a Christian is that he/she believes and accepts the whole teaching of the Bible. Time to realize that. You pick and choose what you want to believe like gay marriage is okay even though the Bible says it isn’t. Then you get mad at me for pointing it out to you. Same thing with filthy language, you think it’s okay to use even though the Bible says it isn’t. What else have we missed techno? Now you’re getting angry with me for defending Christians? And lecturing me on being a good Christian?? You’ve got to make a decision techno. Time is running out. A Christian cannot just ignore part of the Scripture and still claim to be a Christian. Wake up, man.
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Since I have never told anyone that, the answer would be no.
Your outright lies are not serving you well Olaf.

BTW, my views on Jesus are pretty clear. He was a Pharisaic type local preacher and healer in the vein of Hillel. He got schwacked by the Romans because his followers were causing a ruckus in Jerusalem.

Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 11:22 PM
I’ve said what I’ve had to say. Something is not right with you. I believe you are an enemy to Israel. That is, with your current views. I stand by that statement. My prayers are that you will change. And for the record, if your’e talking about true Christians I believe the population serving in the military is higher percentage as compared to the nation. If the reports are true that between 30 and 40 percent of the US military are now fundamentalist Christians, that is higher than the national average. Look, I don’t hate you Squid. Not at all. You have every right to your opinion, okay. I just think you’re wrong. Very wrong! You need to re-evaluate things, bud. Big time. I hope you do.
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 11:29 PM
Ok Squidshark..Maybe next time you vote for a abortionist candidate or try to justify them…maybe you should read your Bible a little more..In your Bible you were warned not to support abortion or sacrifice your young to devils(the canaanite demon idol Molech.)
In fact read it a lot more..you can’t miss the minimum 333 prophecies of the Messiah fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
SaintOlaf on May 27, 2008 at 11:30 PM

Thanks for the lecture, for the record I do not hate you either, my hate is reserved for those who hate me and my faith and I know you do not. I feel you are seriously misguided if you think that having a force made up of 50% or more evangelicals is a good thing. That is not the army of an egalitarian democracy. The military used to be the place where Americans broke down barriers not created them.
Squid Shark on May 27, 2008 at 11:41 PM
I am going to give St Olaf the benifit of the doubt and assume he is getting me confused with someone else, I never said any such thing about Israel or Jesus.

There. Fixed that for you. May God open the eyes of your understanding, because I’m damn sure not having any luck with it.
techno_barbarian on May 27, 2008 at 11:49 PM
I believe Christian values should dominate our government and military. The more society pushes us to be “tolerant” of immoral behaviour and the farther America gets away from it’s Christian heritage, the worse it will get. There are alot of stupid people endangering the security of America. You feel otherwise. Fair enough. We can agree to disagree. All I can do is pray you’ll change your mind in the future.
apacalyps on May 27, 2008 at 11:55 PM
I most likely did confuse your jew on a stick comment with someone else and for that I apologize…but you DID make a comment to me months ago expressing disdain for the state of Israel. You said the rebirth of the “unrighteous and corrupt nation of israel” was “hardly a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy”…
SaintOlaf on May 27, 2008 at 11:56 PM
No. I don’t think you’ll like it techno, but it has to be said. And PS, I don’t hate you either, but both you and Squid are on the wrong track.
apacalyps on May 28, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Apacalyps,
You’re right.
If he stops persecuting Christians I’ll be satisfied with that..
All we can do is pray for him to receive insight about the prophecies in the OT about Jesus..
IF he does believe the old testament that is a start..I think he’ll get it.
According to the prophet Daniel, the Messiah would have had to have come by the destruction of the second temple 70.A.D or his entire religion of judaism is wrong.
SaintOlaf on May 28, 2008 at 12:02 AM
What is a Christian Value?
In order to have Christian Values one must accept Jesus as the lord and Savior, correct?
And one must constantly pester me about it and make me feel like less of an officer because of my faith?
Just wondering what your definition would be.
Squid Shark on May 28, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Nope, still wrong, I would never say any such thing. Israel is like a second home to me. Although they are unrighteous in many ways, the faith of Israeli and American Jews is at an alltime low and I lament that greatly.
Squid Shark on May 28, 2008 at 12:07 AM
That would only be your opinion, and from my point of view your opinion is pretty worthless.
techno_barbarian on May 28, 2008 at 12:08 AM
Oh cry me a river Olaf, let me send you to Sudan and show you some persecuted Christians! Ive seen them before.
I am not persecuting, nor claiming to be persecuted. I am annoyed and feel demeaned sometimes, but I put up with alot of it because it is the nature of the game. NOT ONCE has any of the evangelicals offered to take my duty on Yom Kippur. I have never received the same support for my holidays underway that Sunday services get. This is the nature of being a minority, but to claim I am persecuting you? Give me a break

I would also put forth that it actually doesn’t have to be said at all. I haven’t heard an original thought from the three of you since you started posting. It’s the same thing over and over.
We get it. It’s going to be you, the saint, RedPill, Jesus, God, and the Holy Ghost looking down at the rest of us in the firely lake for an eternity.
I honestly pity Jesus, God, and the Holy Ghost. I wouldn’t stick my worst enemy with that gig.

If you would have entered this forum with the attitude you have now, then there would be no problem. I would not have called you an enemy of Israel. You are almost a completely different person now. Much more rational. But, that is not how it went down. See, when someone attacks Christians serving in the U.S. military, or anywhere else for that matter,
mischaracterizes true Christians — people who love Israel with all there heart — and the Jewish people, then they are an enemy of Israel. The Bible says “Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come” (Psalm 102:13). The time to favour her has come indeed. Amen.

So the end-timers dont think that the Anti-Christ will betray Israel and kill lots of Jews?
I did not mean to attack all military christians, just the ones who have been making my time in the service more difficult.

We’ve had our run-in before and you have yet to commit yourself to the Bible, techno. We’re waiting for you man. The requirements for being a Christian is that he/she believes and accepts the whole teaching of the Bible. You gotta make the full commitment. Time to realize that. You pick and choose what you want to believe and you want us to take your advice on Scriptural matters? Uh uh. Guess again. You openly post here that gay marriage is okay when God says it isn’t. You openly post using filthy language when God says we’re not supposed to. Then you get mad at me for pointing this out to you. Same thing with Scripture. You don’t like people referring to God’s Word while debating. These are all things you’ve said here, and I would post the links, but the filters aren’t letting it get through. What else have we missed techno? Oh, and now you openly attack other Christians defending God’s Word. You want to lecture me on being a good Christian?? You’ve got to make a decision techno. Time is running out. Wake up, man. I don’t want you to go to hell. A Christian cannot just ignore part of the Scripture and still claim to be a Christian. You’re not fooling anybody, especially not God. He knows.
