McCain will demolish Obama on this stuff in the debates. In fact, I think Obama’s campaign has to be coming up with a plan to avoid debating McCain altogther – part of that “new politics,” don’tcha know? They can’t be serious about putting this lightweight on the same stage as McCain for 90 minutes; even if Keith Olbermann is the moderator Obama will get killed.

If that’s the depth of Obama’s understanding of the issues in Afghanistan, perhaps he needs to start holding hearings of his subcommittee and learn a few things before running for President.

Hey, if he didn’t have time to visit Kentucky, how can he have time to hold hearings or go overseas? The Afghanis grow opium for the same reason our early settlers made whiskey from their corn. Nonperishable and easy to transport with no roads or electricity. For a guy who likes to rant about ‘root causes”, Bambi demonstrates remarkable ignorance.

Obama wants to send in Arabic-speaking translators, too, remember. I guess that the Afghanis will have to learn a new language before these agricultural experts can make a dent on changing the opium-based economy.

What a dunce this guy is. His cluelessness reminds me of the missionary family in The Poisonwood Bible, who though well-meaning, tried to impose growing the wrong kind of crops on their new African flock. The law of unintended consequences is the rule with do-gooders.

Obama is trying to be a one-minute manager without having adequate data to support his utopian plans. He really needs to go back to what he does best: eating his waffles.

April 7, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson delivered his first major speech on the war in Vietnam. Opposition to the war had been growing as a result of Operation Rolling Thunder, an expanded U.S. bombing campaign against the North Vietnamese that began the previous month. LBJ ordered his staff to compose an address that would appease his detractors. In the speech Johnson, attempted to do what he had done so successfully throughout his long and colorful political career — make a deal.

The president announced plans for an ambitious $1 billion development program along the vast Mekong River that would benefit not only Vietnam, but all of Southeast Asia. The program was intended as an offer to North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh. Flying back to Washington after the speech, Johnson confidently predicted to his press secretary, Bill Moyers, “…old Ho can’t turn me down.” But the next day, Ho did just that. The rejected Mekong River development proposal was one of many instances in Vietnam where Lyndon Johnson’s formidable skills

as a consensus builder and deal-maker would fail him
