This kind of rhetoric is just pandering to the left-wing nuts who come to his rallies now. It's one of the articles of faith on the Left that BushCo's answer to everything is bombs, and that Bush has ignored the opium trade, while a liberal president would be winning hearts and minds through touchy-feely stuff like sending agriculture exprts.

McCain will demolish Obama on this stuff in the debates. In fact, I think Obama's campaign has to be coming up with a plan to avoid debating McCain altogther - part of that "new politics," don'tcha know? They can't be serious about putting this lightweight on the same stage as McCain for 90 minutes; even if Keith Olbermann is the moderator Obama will get killed.

Most Afgan farmers grow what they are damn well told to grow so the Taliban doesn't ride into town 'round about 3AM and burn their daughters, rape their cattle and steal their farm house.

If that’s the depth of Obama’s understanding of the issues in Afghanistan, perhaps he needs to start holding hearings of his subcommittee and learn a few things before running for President.
Hey, if he didn't have time to visit Kentucky, how can he have time to hold hearings or go overseas? The Afghanis grow opium for the same reason our early settlers made whiskey from their corn. Nonperishable and easy to transport with no roads or electricity. For a guy who likes to rant about 'root causes", Bambi demonstrates remarkable ignorance.

I suppose that it is against Obama's (Wright) religion to read or listen to the observations of people like Michael Yon, who explained the opium problem in his interview with Ed Morrissey. The opium crop provides ready money in a country which has no storage, refrigeration, nor good roads for delivery of other crops. Yon himself said that the investment in diverting the Afghan farmers to other crops in an area ideal for many of them is a long-haul effort -- maybe achieveable within 100 years. (The latter time-frame was probably a hyperbole to make his point.)

Obama wants to send in Arabic-speaking translators, too, remember. I guess that the Afghanis will have to learn a new language before these agricultural experts can make a dent on changing the opium-based economy.

What a dunce this guy is. His cluelessness reminds me of the missionary family in The Poisonwood Bible, who though well-meaning, tried to impose growing the wrong kind of crops on their new African flock. The law of unintended consequences is the rule with do-gooders.

Obama is trying to be a one-minute manager without having adequate data to support his utopian plans. He really needs to go back to what he does best: eating his waffles.

All kidding aside...

What is the focus of this proposal? To get the world to hug us. Fine, but that begs the question:

What, Mr Obama, will you do when three Ag-warriors burnt bodies are hanging from a bridge?....

Let me guess, the contingency plan is Black Hawk Down?

It's cheap to grow and is a hearty crop.

The stupid thing? Opium has legal medicinal uses and there is a shortage. What should be exposed is why the west isn't buying it.

Why would B.H.O. worry about where the "experts" go. The military would probably have to haul them around, as usual.

Raw opium market price is about $75 a pound.

A further indicator of the weakening dollar and its impact on the global marketplace! Where will it all end?

I heard him say, "send in a couple of agriculture experts". Yeah, a couple will really help. They don't even have the trucks to transport, roads, refrigeration, packaging, all that you have stated.
But, to the folks in the audience, the Barack bobble heads, it sounds right, just send in a couple of aggies.
He is so naive, but more important is how his followers just not their head in agreement.

Commies always believe that all problems are economically based and only need an economic solution.

BTW here Obama is what dealing with your enemies gets you

PBS

On
April 7, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson delivered his first major speech on the war in Vietnam. Opposition to the war had been growing as a result of Operation Rolling Thunder, an expanded U.S. bombing campaign against the North Vietnamese that began the previous month. LBJ ordered his staff to compose an address that would appease his detractors. In the speech Johnson, attempted to do what he had done so successfully throughout his long and colorful political career -- make a deal.

The president announced plans for an ambitious $1 billion development program along the vast Mekong River that would benefit not only Vietnam, but all of Southeast Asia. The program was intended as an offer to North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh. Flying back to Washington after the speech, Johnson confidently predicted to his press secretary, Bill Moyers, "...old Ho can't turn me down." But the next day, Ho did just that. The rejected Mekong River development proposal was one of many instances in Vietnam where Lyndon Johnson's formidable skills
as a consensus builder and deal-maker would fail him
