Obama: My uncle liberated … Auschwitz? Update: No mention in 2002 speech; Update: Video added; Update: New video

The meme about Obama’s many gaffes is fun and useful as an antidote to the media myth of St. Barack’s infallibility on the stump, but I think we’ve reached the point of diminishing returns, especially in cases like the “fallen heroes” comment where he’s guilty of nothing more than awkward phrasing. I can imagine myself stumbling into the same silly formulation and that’s without 15 months of 18-hour days on the trail. Needless to say, it’s also a bit late in the game for conservatives to take great exception to rhetorical clumsiness in a would-be president.

Like See-Dub says, though, there are gaffes and there are gaffes:

Obama also spoke about his uncle, who was part of the American brigade that helped to liberate Auschwitz. He said the family legend is that, upon returning from war, his uncle spent six months in an attic. “Now obviously, something had really affected him deeply, but at that time there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain,” Obama said. “That’s why this idea of making sure that every single veteran, when they are discharged, are screened for post-traumatic stress disorder and given the mental health services that they need – that’s why it’s so important.”

Follow the last link to Ace’s site for a reminder of who did the liberating at Auschwitz. I notice that the Auschwitz part of Obama’s remarks isn’t quoted, which made me suspect that he hadn’t specified the camp at all and the reporter had sloppily jumped to conclusions. Not so: WaPo’s account also mentions Auschwitz (although again without directly quoting him). The charitable explanation is that he simply mistook which camp it was that his uncle helped liberate — Patton’s army, for example, liberated Buchenwald and Mauthausen — but according to Obama it was his grandfather who marched with Patton, not his uncle. (Or was his uncle in the Third Army too?) The uncharitable explanation — well, follow the link to See-Dub for that. I don’t think Obama’s crazy/Hillaryesque enough to make up a story like this whole cloth knowing what the consequences would be if he got caught, but there is a parallel with the Tuzla debacle here insofar as it’s never a good idea to float a powerful personal story that hasn’t been thoroughly fact-checked. Exit question: Barry’s got some interesting theories about World War II, huh?

Update: Geraghty has the right read on Obama’s proneness to gaffes. It’s not that he shouldn’t be indulged, it’s that the press should be similarly indulgent of conservatives.

Update: Lawhawk notes that Obama didn’t mention Auschwitz at all in his speech yesterday and wonders if CBS’s reporter simply made it up. Answer: no. WaPo noted the Auschwitz line too. It wasn’t part of the speech but the speech doesn’t represent the sum total of what he said in New Mexico. It’s only 10 minutes long; per WaPo, Obama spoke “for most of an hour.”

Update: I made a mistake in the headline; it wasn’t his grandfather who he said liberated Auschwitz, it was his uncle. Which prompts the question: Which uncle? Geraghty’s been googling and it looks like his mother was an only child. Was this “uncle” just a family friend, like “Uncle” Jeremiah Wright?

Update: A reader e-mails pointing to this passage in Obama’s 2002 anti-war speech:

My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton’s army. He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil, and he did not fight in vain.

No mention of his uncle, even though this would have been an obvious place for it. Maybe it was his grandfather who helped liberate Buchenwald with Patton and somehow that turned into a mysterious uncle liberating Auschwitz. But, er, how and why?

Update: Commenter windansea sends along the video. Skip ahead to 5:14 for the part about his uncle; as luck would have it, it’s almost inaudible thanks to the wind blowing at that moment, to the point where I can’t tell if he mentions Auschwitz at all. I’ll trust the reporters who were there, two of whom claim to have heard it.

Other commenters are telling me that his great-uncle Ralph was in the service, so that’s probably who he means. In all likelihood he simply named the wrong camp here. Sloppy, but not nefarious a la Tuzla.

Update: Yeah, he said it. Here’s audible video from CNN.

Uh… Obama’s uncle was Russian?? Wasn’t Auschwitz (and most German death camps) liberated by the Russians? If so, well… um…

Not just which uncle.

Which attic?

he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka.

The grandfather didn’t even go to the camps (and Obama got the camps wrong here too). For all we know his grandfather was out of the army by the time the camps were liberated

Poor men. Their kinsman can’t even get their story straight.

baldilocks on May 27, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Aucshwitz was liberated by the Russians. From Wikipedia: “Those too weak or sick to walk were left behind; about 7,500 prisoners were liberated by the 322nd Rifle Division of the Red Army on January 27 1945.”

So, as I was saying, Obama’s uncle was Russian??

Weebork on May 27, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Another point - in his 2002 anti-war spiel (ie, “lie”), BHO also mentions Treblinka, which was liberated by the Soviets (not his grandfather’s “fellow troops”), but only after the Nazis had abandoned it months earlier and had shot the 30 remaining girls in November -the last of the million or so Jews who had been murdered there.

The way this motherless lying jerk wraps himself in the misery of others for his own career goals is astonishing.

TexasJew on May 27, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Or, if it was his grandfather: Obama’s grandfather was Russian??

Or, if it was another family member: Obama’s ____________ was Russian??

Man, I wish I had heroic ancestors who killed evil Nazis and liberated starving Holocaust victims. Boy do I feel crummy.

Maybe his uncle was a Black Russian (or drank lots of them).

TexasJew on May 27, 2008 at 12:58 PM

Double fairy tale.

Once upon a time there was a concentration camp in Poland named Auschwitz which BHO’s uncle helped to liberate. But, wait a minute, haven.t BHO’s overseas friends denied the existence of this camp and others like it? Also, since American forces never went anywhere near Poland in World War II. could Obama’s uncle have been a member of the Soviet Red Army?

The end result is that OBAMA’s UNCLE LIBERATED A CAMP WHICH DIDN’T EXIST LOCATED IN A COUNTRY THAT AMERICAN FORCES DIDN’T OCCUPY. Am I a racist if I call the guy a liar?

MaiDee on May 27, 2008 at 12:59 PM

Obviously he’s referring to “Uncle Sam” and that’s a truth . . . it’s also utter BS.

rplat on May 27, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Since Auschwitz was in Poland, the Allies must have opened a secret third front to help the Soviets in the liberation.

Obama doesn’t know history and he doesn’t know that there are fifty states (as opposed to 57). He certainly represents change.

Special Forces Grunt on May 27, 2008 at 11:00 AM

I guess BHO thinks this qualifies him to be commander in chief of his 57 states…how about the morons that will vote for him…

“57 States”: Gaffe, or Crypto-Marxist Code?

Red Pill on May 27, 2008 at 1:07 PM

baldilocks on May 27, 2008 at 12:38 PM

To add to the confusion, according to this there was a Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham (Born 12/25/1894) who was his Great Grandfather.

It’s odd that that story does not mention a son with the same name (who would have been his Great Uncle).

It has been noted that when one screws up, one might best hope to stay off of Hitchens’s radar, as he has a propensity for evisceration that is not to be challenged.

In the same way, one might be happy to have AllahPundit condider one’s rhetorical excesses, as he is so very understanding of this sort of thing. If your name is Obama.

Jaibones on May 27, 2008 at 1:09 PM

“Which Uncle” is easy - “Uncle Joe” Stalin.

After all, Barack Obama is a “comrade.” As is Clinton. They should both give homage to a fellow Communist.

OhEssYouCowboys on May 27, 2008 at 1:09 PM

Aksed,
“Plus, how many 45 year old guys have an uncle who was born in, what, 1923?”

I’m 49, with uncles who were born in the 1918 - 1935 years. If his mom was a younger child of a big family (as my parents both were) it is not unlikely. So that portion of his story is definitely possible.

exhelodrvr on May 27, 2008 at 1:10 PM

If Barry O’s mother’s family is so patriotic, why did Barry O write a book about dreaming of his father?

Steve Z on May 27, 2008 at 11:57 AM

Probably because Barry’s mom was an anti-American, commie-leaning, hippie-type who told little Barry a lot of tall tales about what a great guy his absent Kenyan dad was. The truth — that daddy was an arrogant, irresponsible, drunken, bigamist — was much less appealing.

But you make a valid point about Barry cynically trying to use his white American relatives to prove his own patriotism. This is the same man who wrote about how he wished, like one of his heroes Malcolm X, that he could rid himself of his white blood. Obama has spent his entire life trying to distance himself from his white relatives and show that he’s not like them, yet when it’s politically expedient for him to use them, he’s proving more than willing to do so.

OhEssYouCowboys on May 27, 2008 at 1:09 PM

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that.

Since Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviets, it’s another Obama crypto-Marxist statement to say an uncle liberated Auschwitz.

Just like his “57″ states was a reference to McCarthy and the Manchurian Candidate.

Obama is mocking us. Not only is the man a Marxist, he laughs at us because he thinks the general population will trust him and think that we are nuts when we try to expose him for what he is.

I wonder if folks have taken the time to note that whatever relatives of Obama’s served in the US military, they were his racist* WHITE relatives, not his black Muslim relatives.

Personally, I think this is BHO’s Tuzla moment to try and kill two birds with one stone: 1) fabricate a distant military pedigree for a smidgen of reflected glory; and 2) to garner some of the Jewish vote. He knows his association with the virulently anti-Semitic Wright (and general Left) has done real damage. He’s hoping his WHITE great-uncle’s faux “savior of Auschwitz” moment can give his some cred with [rich, white] Jews.

Maybe the educated-beyond-his-intelligence Obama was confusing this “uncle” with the crazy grandfather in the attic who recalled his Civil War battles at inconvenient times, humorously described in James Thurber’s tales. Or maybe Obama remembers the Teddy Roosevelt character who kept popping us in another literary jewel.

At any rate, Obama’s subtext/code is that anyone who serves during a military engagement is prone to mental health problems. That chestnut is one that the Lefty mindset cherishes, expecially when it cannot trot out casualty statistics.

I refuse to even call them “Democrats” or “Liberals.” What used to be a Party with a fringe element of Communists has now become infested with Communists. Just look at the statement, last week, of Maxine Waters re: “socializing” [stupid ass that she is] - nationalizing the oil industry.

They need to be called what they are - Socialists and Communists - and their goal is to destroy our country, as we know it.

P.S. I commend you for your comments along the same lines. They have been several, and it is what is needed. Too many “Conservatives” play the Communist game of using euphemisms in order to mask the truth.

Interesting that Obama has all these American military heroes in his family, and yet in one of his books he wrote that the person in his life of whom he was most proud was his Kenyan half-brother (or cousin, I forget which) who had given up booze, smoking, and pork and converted to Islam. I wonder when we’ll be hearing that relative mentioned in one of Barry’s speeches?

Is this a good time to recall that Barry really admires Ghandi the pacifist, so much so that he has his picture on the walls of his Senate office?

Isn’t it a bit difficult to reconcile Barry’s admiration of Ghandi with his claims about ancestors liberating Auschwitz in light of this (from Fred Thompson)?:

During World War II, Gandhi penned an open letter to the British people, urging them to surrender to the Nazis. Later, when the extent of the holocaust was known, he criticized Jews who had tried to escape or fight for their lives as they did in Warsaw and Treblinka. “The Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher’s knife,” he said. “They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs.” “Collective suicide,” he told his biographer, “would have been heroism.”

MayBee on May 27, 2008 at 1:59 PM

You’re right, it’s very odd. He begins by mentioning his grandfather and inferred that he didn’t like talking about his war time service because friends died and they didn’t have treatment for post-traumatic stress in those days.

He then proceeds to mention his crazy uncle in the attic, so that makes 2 relatives who we are to infer were unstable, to varying degrees.

Also regarding the first video - How does Obama plan to build up ground troops if he supports the Webb version of the G.I. Bill, which would greatly harm retention by removing an important incentive to re-enlist? And if he is in favor of having State Department employees handle some tasks which are now assigned to our enlisted men, why does he object so much to hiring companies like Blackwater?

Finally, as I recall, when the State Department was asked to volunteer to serve as diplomats in Iraq they had an hysterical fit about it and claimed they were putting their lives at risk and could orphan their children, so how would a Barry administration convince these wimps that they need to do social service work in dangerous places like Bagdhad, Mosul, or Ramadi?

Wasn’t Pearl Harbor some time before May 28th? o.O (/sarc)

Lord Nazh on May 27, 2008 at 2:40 PM

Good catch.

It’s almost as if he’s playing the role of Barack Obama.

Great post, Baldilocks. Of course the inevitable question is - who is the author of the script he is following?

BTW, Ralph was the uncle, Stanley, the grandfather who allegedly enlisted right after Pearl, enlisted on June 18 1942.

Thanks! I’ve altered it a little to include Lord Nazh’s info.

Who?

Girl I don’t know and I’m wondering if I want to know.

I seriously don’t understand why Vietnam Vets, or any Vet for that matter, would have anything to do with a Democrat. Especially the Vietnam Vets, Democrat Johnson threw thousands of young men into Vietnam and then basically order them to be targets. They were give ridiculous and unworkable rules of engagement, told they couldn’t bomb this and they couldn’t bomb that. As a result over 50,000 of them died and we lost the war.

Some people might think that’s an exaggeration but actually it was much worse than I stated. For younger people that know little about Vietnam it is a case study on how treasonist Democrats truly are. If its not already blazingly clear to you that Democrats cannot be trusted in matters of national security or anything else, read up on what Democrats did to our troops in Vietnam, it will make your eyes bug-out.

Is it possible that he signed up much sooner than when he was inducted?

Hey man, I’ve got experience, my uncle liberated Auschwitz and I watched him cower in the attic for 6 months. Well, I didn’t, but my family told me about it. Oh, and he didn’t actually go to Auschwitz, he heard about it from others who heard about it. Oh, and I’m not sure it was my uncle.

There. So I have experience, now let me…

Was he a typical White Russian?

I’ve never felt more proud of Barry than at this very moment.

Oh wait, that was gas from the gumbo I had for lunch.

I was hoping you’d write about this episode. Thanks!

I believe LBJ was a Communist. I believe he played a role in informing Castro of the Bay of Pigs invasion. I believe the Communists were behind the assassination of Kennedy in order to elevate Johnson to the Presidency. I believe LBJ’s goal in Vietnam was to send tens of thousands of our best to their deaths.

They are playing a tape on the radio now and there is no doubt that he said Auschwitz.

First question, did his grandfather have a brother?

Second, trying to do the math here. If Barry is really talking about his “great-uncle Ralph,” then perhaps he’s confused WWI for WWII? A great-uncle to Barry would just be an uncle to his grandfather. Brother of grandfather’s father or mother.

These questions have both been answered.

And actually, a great-uncle is a brother to one of your grandparents. Your great-great uncle is a brother to one of your great-grandparents.

I’m no fan of LBJ’s but I think one of his biggest flaws as president was trusting Robert McNamara.

Obama Advisor Accuses Jews of ‘McCarthyism’

Which advisor? The one who spent some of his earliest years first in Germany witnessing the rise of the Nazis, and then in the Soviet Union during Stalin’s Great Purge.

The same advisor who took part in the following the last time he was anywhere near the oval office:
the normalization of relations with the Communist People’s Republic of China (and the severing of ties with the Republic of China/Taiwan),
the signing of the second Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT II),
the transition of Iran to an anti-Western Islamic state,
the arming of the mujaheddin in Afghanistan, and
the signing of the Treaties relinquishing U.S. control of the Panama Canal after 1999.
