Jimmy Carter: “Supine” Europeans should break with U.S. on Gaza blockade

posted at 2:00 pm on May 26, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

A new entry in the fine Democratic tradition of undermining U.S. policies overseas, which makes the left’s outrage over Bush’s appeasement remarks before the Knesset that much more absurd. Carter, of course, has carved out a special niche in this regard, but that’s only because his Nobel-ized moral authority is a tad more absolute than the rest.

Britain and other European governments should break from the US over the international embargo on Gaza, former US president Jimmy Carter told the Guardian yesterday. Carter, visiting the Welsh border town of Hay for the Guardian literary festival, described the EU’s position on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute as “supine” and its failure to criticise the Israeli blockade of Gaza as “embarrassing”.

Referring to the possibility of Europe breaking with the US in an interview with the Guardian, he said: “Why not? They’re not our vassals. They occupy an equal position with the US.”…

He called on the EU to reassess its stance if Hamas agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza. “Let the Europeans lift the embargo and say we will protect the rights of Palestinians in Gaza, and even send observers to Rafah gate [Gaza’s crossing into Egypt] to ensure the Palestinians don’t violate it.”

Embargoes and sanctions are, of course, the humane alternative to war as a form of pressuring a rogue regime, until they’re not. Oh, and lest you think his Hamas advocacy came solely at the expense of the United States, he spilled some Israeli nuclear secrets this weekend too. Exit question: The more he talks, the better it is for McCain, no?

Supine???

When last checked, it wasn’t Israel shooting rockets into Gaza.

In only the mind of the demented Jimma Carter can the world look so, so unbalanced.

Too bad there’s no way to erase Jimmuh’s name from the list of US presidents. Calling him a disgrace to the nation is the equivalent of calling a hurricane a “breeze.”

Osama Obama will put the finishing touches on the damage Carter wrought.

This makes me wonder how much intelligence the Israelis would share with an Obama administration.

forest on May 26, 2008 at 2:19 PM

As Jimmy Crack Corn has placed his mantle on Obama’s shoulders, and Obama aligns with Jimmy’s stances, AT LEAST Obama’s international policies are up front for all to understand BEFORE the vote.

That anyone could be so vile and STUPID is hard to endure. The uber-left suffered/suffers Bush derangement syndrome, so they’ll claim any reaction to Carter/Obama as sour grapes. It is true that GW has certainly put his foot in it deep with his declaration of trust in Putin, our open borders and the ultra-layer of bureaucracy given Homeland Security. But if McCain loses, America will spiral down so fast, there’ll be no stopping Obama’s destruction of the USA. Even Hillary would do less harm to the USA than Obama. Hillary may say her party’s line, but unlike BHO and Jimmy Crack Corn at least she knows the score.

If only McCain would be what America needs instead of what he thinks liberals will accept/tolerate.–Hope.

I honestly have to wonder how anyone in the Democratic Party can actually look to someone like Jimmy Carter for anything even remotely resembling guidance. The man is so out of touch with reality that it is no longer funny. One thing is very clear, and that is that Carter is no longer a friend of Israel. I now doubt if he ever even was one.

Just one more entry for Jimmuh to maintain his position as the worst president evah.

He’s a repugnant little man still bitter about having Bonzo’s sidekick clean his clock. From that moment he has essentially hated the American public for the vote that shamed him.

He continues to mingle among that small orb of anti American miscreants who comfort and abet his hate. More often than not overseas. I’m sure when Arafat died he was crushed.

Twain said it best, as regards the Carter’s through history when hearing one died, “While I’m sorry I can’t be there, I approve of the procedings” or something to that effect.

Well,…yes. since Jimmy raised the point, it would also seem appropriate to ask Obama directly during the debates if he also favors lifting the sanctions/embargos, if hamas would honor a ceasefire, and that it is a good thing for the EU to go it’s separate way regarding the ME. Seems a fair foreign policy question.

Someone may correct me on this, but I believe that former presidents are kept in the information loop as a professional courtesy.

To my way of thinking, Carter’s rogue “negotiations” and speaking on behalf of our country in foreign venues smacks of abuse of power. Hasn’t he flouted the Hatch Act numerous times? (That behavior seems to be part of the Dems’ job descriptions at the federal level.)

“Now the LORD had said unto Abram (known as the father of the Jewish people), Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee (the land of Israel): And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I (God) will bless them that bless thee (Israel), and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” Genesis 12:1-3

The story is really very simple. God gave the land of Israel to Abraham and to his descendants through Isaac and Jacob. He blessed them and they prospered and grew into a great nation. The land — the promised land — is known today as Israel. These are referred to in the Bible as the Jews (Romans 1:16). Ask any Christian why they support Israel against rhe Palestinians and they’ll tell you it’s because God gave the Jews the land.

Does Jimmy Carter even read his Bible? Why is he trying to divy up Israel and give it to God’s enemies? I’m very afraid for that man on judgment day.

One month after his visit to the region spurred criticism from Israeli officials for his meeting with Syria-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, former US president Jimmy Carter is again making waves, this time saying that Israel possesses 150 nuclear weapons.

The London Times said Carter made the comment Sunday while at the Hay-on-Wye literary festival in England. He was discussing Iran, and the difficulty it would have in building a secret nuclear arsenal, when he mentioned the Israeli weapons, the paper said.

Wade on May 27, 2008 at 8:13 AM

I always try to see the best in people and to have just interpretations of people. However, my views on Jimmy Carter may strike some as strange and extreme, and obviously I could be wrong. First off, let me observe that Jimmy Carter is neither naive nor stupid. Naivety is for youth before they become disillusioned, and Carter has already had his disillusioning experiences in his time as president. Consider his statements about the Soviets and Afghanistan.

Having eliminated naivety and stupid, we are left searching for some other reason for his evil. Carter’s desire to lick the sh** off the shoes of the most evil dictators he can find seems to me to be sexual masochism taken to the extreme. (I mean no disrespect to the run of the mill sexual masochist who keeps his desires within the bounds of sanity.) To be clear, I am making the perhaps wild accusation that Jimmy Carter’s sexual desire is to be prison raped by Pol Pot and Robert Mugabe. On the other hand, there is some competing evidence from the Playboy interview where Carter claimed to have lust in his heart from looking at women, which does indicate heterosexuality. If there were just more terrifically evil woman dictators out there, we could see if he were partial towards them.

thuja on May 27, 2008 at 8:14 AM

How far will our government let this man go before they do something about his treason!!??? IMO he should be told to shut his damned mouth, stay in this country and keep state secrets to himself or risk being tried for treason!!!

kcd on May 27, 2008 at 9:17 AM

Carter is the worst kind of human being. At the very least he should be denied the classified briefings normally accorded ex-presidents.

The Europeans and US had monitors at the Rafah Gate in 2006 and gave the Palestinians good marks! They got upset when the Israelis closed the border in June 2006 in response to a lttle incident (Their words) – the kidnapping of the two Israeli soldiers. In the last few years we have seen where monitors/peacekeepers monitor and keep the peace while letting the rat bags operate.

Like many with dated knowledge Carter’s remarks are misleading. His comments regarding US/Russian warheads may be an example.

He mentions that the Russians and US have 12,000 weapons/warheads each. The estimates (who really knows) are quite different The Federation of American Scientists (not known for being a friend of the government) estimates the US 2007 total as 9938 with 5163 being active.

The National Resources Defence Council (NRDC)(another group not known for being an advocate of the governmnt) estimates Russian 2007 warheads at 15,000 with 5670 being active.

Dated knowledge or playing the moral equivelency meme? You chose.
