Hillary: I’m sticking around in case Obama gets shot; Update: I had Teddy on my mind, says Hillary; Update: Hillary said same thing in March; Update: No thrill up Matthews’ leg; Update: RFK Jr. defends

posted at 4:35 pm on May 23, 2008 by Allahpundit

Reserve judgment on this one for the time being. Drudge is blaring it but he’s knee-deep in the tank for Obama. The source he links to, the New York Post, isn’t exactly Hillary-friendly. And the only video available at the Argus-Leader is a full replay of her meeting with the paper’s editors with no fast-forward function that I can see. I’m not willing to sit through the whole thing to find this snippet when someone’s bound to cut and upload it within the hour, so in the meantime let’s be prudent. I’ll update when the clip is available.

Until then, geez.

Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama.

“My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don’t understand it,” she said, dismissing calls to drop out.

Maybe all she meant was “well, anything can happen” without meaning to imply the prospect of murder, but good lord. Exit question: Will the number of Democrats who want her out of the race still be in decline after this?

Update: Breitbart’s got a bit of the video. Doesn’t look out of context to me.

Update: The defense:

“She was simply referencing her husband in 1992 and Bobby Kennedy in 1968 as historic examples of the nominating process going well into the summer. Any reading into beyond that would be inaccurate,” responded Clinton campaign spokesperson Mo Elleithee.

Why didn’t she use Teddy’s run at Jimmy Carter in 1980 instead?

Update: The obligatory photoshop.

Update: MSNBC reminds us that she said something similar, albeit much more tactfully, after getting blown out in North Carolina. She’s trying to make the point that anything can happen but this is an exceedingly poor way to do so. Although not surprising: It’s typical of the incompetent way she’s managed her campaign that she wouldn’t have anticipated the reaction to this.

Update: So much clarification. So much weak, unconvincing clarification.

Earlier today I was discussing the Democratic primary history and in the course of that discussion mentioned the campaigns that both my husband and Senator Kennedy waged in California in June 1992 and 1968 and I was referencing those to make the point that we have had nomination primary contests that go into June. That’s a historic fact. The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator Kennedy and I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation, and particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that, whatsoever. My view is that we have to look to the past and to our leaders who have inspired us and give us a lot to live up to, and I’m honored to hold Senator Kennedy’s seat in the United States Senate from the state of New York and have the highest regard for the entire Kennedy family.

Update: What was that again about having Teddy on her mind?

Update (Ed): Well, this thread wouldn’t be complete without having the clip of Chris Matthews trying to explicitly take the viewpoint of — get this — an objective journalist. He’s interviewing chief Obama strategist David Axelrod, who isn’t looking much like a man whose opponents just blew trou:

Can Hillary recover from this? I don’t mean for the nomination; that’s dead. Can she salvage her career at all, or did she just kill the Clinton brand once and for all?

I know this: the Obama campaign will not, under any circumstances, put her on the ticket now. They won’t pay her campaign debt. She will finish her run in Puerto Rico, and then she will simply … go away.

Update: RFK’s son, a Hillary supporter, answers the bell:

In a statement, Kennedy Jr. said: “It is clear from the context that Hillary was invoking a familiar political circumstance in order to support her decision to stay in the race through June. I have heard her make this reference before, also citing her husband’s 1992 race, both of which were hard fought through June. I understand how highly charged the atmosphere is, but I think it is a mistake for people to take offense.”

My sister has friends in Virginia who know the first responders to Vince Foster and they claim it was no suicide.

These same friends have a friend who worked in the White House Secret Service during the Clintons and he said they are horrible to work for. And that Chelsea used to come down to the kitchen late at night so the staff could make her something to eat. They never ate together as a family at all, as Hillary claims.

The woman is clearly a liar, when are people going to get it?

Now my question has always been this….”Why in the hell does that woman want to be President so damn bad?” What special power is it that she needs and to do what with it? That what you all need to ask. When Dubya got in, he zipped out some quick orders to undo something the CLintons had going, I believe before the band even stopped playing from the swear-in. Nah, there’s more to this, and no one wants to be incharge for the people’s well being, she has some unfinished Clinton business to do, and after the election, and the files get released, we’ll find out maybe what some of that is.

Maxx on May 24, 2008 at 12:41 PM

You are a liar.
First, I never said “conspiracies NEVER happen”, liar.
Second, conspiracy in this context has a more specific meaning, as does “conspiracy theorist” (of course, you know that, liar, but you like to play semantics games anyway).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_theory

A conspiracy theory is a hypothesis that alleges a coordinated group are and/or were secretly working together to commit illegal or wrongful actions including hiding the existence of the group and its activities. In notable cases the hypothesis contradicts what was or is represented as the mainstream explanation for historical or current events. The phrase is also used dismissively to label hypothetical speculation as being untrue or outlandish.

There’s a difference between people convicted of conspiracy based on sound evidence and a bunch of nuts on the Internet claiming The Clenis Clan is systematically knocking off political opponents without a shred of real evidence, liar.

The latter is a result of a demented mind hellbent on railing a political opponent no matter how damaging it is to his cause or others who otherwise support his cause (ie: me).

Hillary is bad news, no love for her here, etc. It was a stupid thing to say because it opened the door for he accusations now being hurled about her intent. She was not saying that she’s in the race in case Hussein gets shot, she was clumcily referencing the date of RFK’s shooting to demonstrate that in June of 68 the nomination was still undecided. Stupid, yes. Malicious, no.

.
There is a possibility that she did simply misspeak, but after watching the video, there is no real continuity in her statements. She points out (inaccurately, IMO) that her husband clinched the nomination in California in June, and then throws in the Kennedy assasination comment. Sure, Kennedy was on track to win the dem nod, but she leaves that unsaid. It seemed that you could take it either way, and based on prior experience, many of her comments are structured in precisely that manner.

Maxx on May 24, 2008 at 3:06 PM

All right, here’s a substantive reason for why Obama will win:

Because technically, it’s not up to the people anymore. It’s up to those in the news media and them who own Hollywood and all the sources of information. Once this small group (not the American people) pick their candidate it’s over for the other candidates. A good example was when they started pushing two liberals in McCain and Romney onto conservatives as the only candidates that we had to choose from. It was painfully obvious at the MSNBC and CNN GOP television debates with the one-sided speaking times. They literally wouldn’t give Mike Huckabee any speaking time because they knew he would have done well. That aside, really it’s whoever the media favours that will win. They are a propoganda machine and right now Obama is their golden boy. Sorry bout that decent, honest, hard working American citizens.

Her shocking comment to a South Dakota newspaper might qualify as the dumbest thing ever said in American politics.

Her lame explanation that she brought up the 1968 assassination of Robert Kennedy because his brother Ted’s illness was on her mind doesn’t cut it. Not even close.

two reasons

1. Kennedy current health and then the media would have jumped on her or trying to politicize the situation and his health.

2. Why would she want to be compared to Kennedy who screwed up a convention?

Did you literally read it, not see it? Russert played the whole thing in context today, and it really was nothing at all.

Frankly, the blogosphere jumping on every small slip a candidate or politician makes, then blowing it up all out of proportion, makes the blogosphere no better than the worst of the MSM, especially the tabloids and 24-hour cable news. The front page of Hot Air is, to my mind, egregious in this regard, no less so than the tabloids, which it emulates to a dismaying degree.

Not that there isn’t a good deal of fun in raunchy and snide headlines and graphics, and over-reaction to everything, but how can one rail against the MSM if one is just as thoughtless and overwrought?

These Beltway and other denizens have so many glaring faults and objectionable qualities that it really is not necessary to vent our collective spleen on trivia like this. Just because they do it on TV doesn’t make it right.
