The founders never intended for Congressional seats to be lifetime appointments.
Term limits now.

Caligula made his horse a Roman Senator. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that Ted’s limiting the bequest of his senate seat to human members of his family.

Um, can things get worse? Make the substitution!

I am sorry for anyone with this disease. Even Ted.

That said, his behavior and ideas make much more sense now.

I held my peace to be reverent in a time of mourning, (IE I made none of the comments I wanted to.) but hell, if everyone else is flipping back to the Kennedy Bashing (Which I believe is appropriate for the man-slaughtering, seditious, old drunk.)

Good one, bobthepeeler.

from the Politico piece:

When he rose to the occasion, he could be devastatingly effective, as when he denounced President Ronald Reagan’s Supreme Court nominee in a shattering speech called “Robert Bork’s America.”

And that piece of purple, slanderous rhetoric by the Tedster against Bork is worthy of praise??

Ted Kennedy is shameless, and his recommendation that his wife succeed him speaks to his bloated ego. (Just what Congress needs: another lawyer making laws.) The less I hear of the Kennedy mystique and the family compound, the less the acid in my stomach churns.

Something is wrong in our government when incapacitated senators, whether by illness or age, are able to keep their seats. Byrd, the one from S.D., Specter, and now Kennedy come to mind readily. Term limits and anti-nepotism amendments seem to be appropriate legislation in keeping with the vision of our Founding Fathers.

By the same token, legislators running for executive positions should resign from their seats.

Let's not forget that Chappaquidick Fats' wife Vickie is the daughter of a major Democrat Louisiana politician. Her dad, Edmund, is a former judge down there. He came from the same town as Edwin Edwards, namely Crowley, "the rice capitol of the world". In fact, he was one of Edwards' best friends.

Yep, she would be right at home in Masshole politics.

Romney should definitely run for Kennedy's Senate seat next time it comes up.

But if Romney had won re-election as Governor of Massachusetts, instead of running for President, he could have appointed a Republican Senator if Kennedy stepped down for health reasons. Of course, nobody could have predicted last year that Kennedy would have health problems now.

As a side note, one thing the Politico conveniently forgot to mention is that all the publicity about Teddy having gone bar cruising with his nephew the evening of that date rape accusation occurred during the Clarence Thomas hearings with the sideshow of Anita Hill making spurious accusations of Thomas.

The timing was probably the ONLY thing that could have caused even Teddy to keep his mouth shut at that time.

From the NYT no less and, believe it or not, by Anna Quindlen, who actually had no blinders on regarding the hypocrisy of Ted Kennedy:

Public & Private; Trouble With Teddy

Everyone knew why the senior Senator from Massachusetts turned into an inanimate object when the hearings turned to the subject of sexual harassment. It was because of the split between his public and private selves, because of accounts of his drinking and his exploits with women, because of his nephew in Palm Beach and his car in Chappaquiddick.

Even one of his close friends stooped to conquer. Criticizing a remark of Mr. Kennedy's, Orrin Hatch said, "Anybody who believes that, I know a bridge up in Massachusetts that I'll be happy to sell to them." Later Senator Hatch apologized, saying he meant a bridge in Brooklyn.

And if you believe that, there is a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell.

Now, THAT was political drama that hadn't been seen since the days of Watergate.

I still remember Lewis Grizzard writing that Ted Kennedy should have come to the Thomas confirmation hearings with a bag over his head.

Imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth in 2009 if we have a President John McCain and a Senator Mitt Romney.

C’mon guys….it would be beautiful.

C’mon Mitt. You would be an awesome Senator…get in there and slap some sense into those porkmeisters who have brought shame to the GOP.

Senator Mitt Romney

funky chicken on May 22, 2008 at 1:00 PM

I can already picture the scene…Senator Norm Coleman (re-elected because Ventura and Franken split the dem/lunatic vote) and Senator Mitt Romney (elected because Vicky Kennedy and some other old time MA dem split the dems) relaxing with President McCain in the WH Rose Garden….

funky chicken on May 22, 2008 at 1:10 PM

But there is a chance that trying to coronate his trophy wife (?) could cause big enough problems to get somebody like Romney the seat.

funky chicken on May 22, 2008 at 1:32 PM

Deval Patrick is such an idiot that he really has made Romney smell like a rose. Strike while the iron is hot!

funky chicken on May 22, 2008 at 1:49 PM

And our GOP delegation in the Senate is desperately in need of a high profile kick in the ass, and I think Romney has what it takes to deliver it.

Never pass up a golden opportunity.

funky, some of my red pills are missing...did you take some?

:-)

I'm just playing...I actually agree with you that Romney would be an excellent Senator and wonderful replacement for Ted Kennedy. Romney would win. In all honesty, it's practically Mitt's duty to run for that seat, since he's the only Republican who could win it.

Just as many are tired of Bush/Clinton/Bush, I imagine there are many in Mass. who are tired of the Kennedys. There are probably career legislators who have been patiently waiting for TK to step down so that they could have a shot at his Senate seat.
By the bye-I do this from time to time on these posts:
Term Limits! We need Term Limits for Congress!
If it's good enough for the President, it's good enough for the dinosaurs in the Senate and House.
