NYT: McCain to meet with Jindal, Crist, Romney about VP this weekend? Update: Purely social, says McCain camp; Update: Lieberman, Graham also attending

What, no Huck? I thought he topped the shortlist. Or is this the new, post-joke reality, after the classless people on the Internet raised such a ruckus?

Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, on Friday is scheduled to meet with two Republican governors who have been prominently mentioned as potential running mates, according to Republicans familiar with Mr. McCain’s plan.

Charlie Crist, the governor of Florida, and Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, have both accepted invitations to meet with Mr. McCain at his home in Arizona, according to Republican familiars with the decision. One Republican said that Mitt Romney, a former rival of Mr. McCain for the presidential nomination — is also expected to visit him this weekend. Mr. Romney’s advisers declined to comment.

Tim Pawlenty’s evidently attending a wedding this weekend; it’s not clear if he was invited. We’ve had endless threads about the VP prospects of Jindal (more than one) and Romney (many, many, many more than one) and a few piecemeal takes on Crist. Follow those links for the arguments; if this is the full shortlist then Romney clearly has the advantage. Skim through this new Survey USA poll of California too as you mull, as they decided to test various McCain vs. Obama tickets — including McCain/Lieberman — against each other. Surprisingly, it’s McCain/Huckabee that does the best, with McCain/Romney a close second. Exit question: Does any of it matter? The juggernaut’s a-comin’!

Update: False alarm. Turns out Maverick just wants to spend Memorial Day weekend hanging out with friends, three of whom happen to be top VP contenders and one of whom is literally half his age and hails from an entirely different part of the country.

Update: Liebs and Grahamnesty will also be there, although they’re basically part of McCain’s entourage.

Would it really make any difference if Crist were gay? Just ’cause someone’s single, doesn’t mean they’re gay.

Graham is crap, of course, Lieberman, my landsman, is good on precisely one issue, Romney ain’t going to get it from McCain, and Crist is lost in space.

No, I was agreeing with your points, and referencing the comments on this thread to the effect of many rejecting Crist because he might be gay, given the evidence that he’s single. Social cons (not you, I guess), prefer gays to remain single, in order to avoid them (somehow) adversely influencing society, or God forbid, wanting to get married. Many claim that they don’t care what gay people do, as long as marriage is “safe.” Sometimes, however, peoples’ true opinions show.

I think gays should want to get married. Absolutely. I just think that once they make such a serious commitment, that engaging in homosexual behavior after getting married is infidelity, and a selfish, immature, and irresponsible way to act in a marriage.

A slight aside for Memorial Day for all the non-Southerners: “barbecue” or “bbq” is a NOUN, not a VERB! Moving along…I’ll take Romney or Jindal first.

SouthernGent on May 21, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Also, as far as the horror of “coming out,” I don’t buy it for a second. If you aren’t comfortable with who you are, maybe you should try harder to overcome your urges instead of fall into the victim mentality. I die a little on the inside every time I see an grown man or woman bawling about admitting their inclinations to act in unnatural ways toward their fellow human beings. Cry me a river, no one cares that you’re gay! If you really feel so bad about it, change your ways! Don’t BS me about discrimination when YOU chose to shack up with another man, YOU chose to bring your photos to work, and YOU chose to bring your orientation to the forefront of your identity. The rest of us were perfectly happy being standard employees of Widget MFG Co. The only one who wants to be known as the “different” one is the one who brings attention to it.

I wouldn’t wish homosexual urges on anyone. It is a dangerous condition which grows worse the more it is enabled and encouraged by others who “just want to bring comfort and companionship.” The fastest way to shorten your lifespan is to be a sexually active homosexual male. Between the diseases it causes and the particularly vile and degrading subculture that exists out there among serial monogamists (read: 3 months of monogamy, 9 of being “freelance”), its a pretty deadly road to fall into.

There is nothing beautiful about homosexual relationships or “marriage,” and I’m not talking aesthetics. It is ridden with disease, devoid of life, and devoid of respect. It is impossible to have a meaningful relationship if you do not allow the possibility of creating something greater than yourselves. It is a perversion(i.e. an evil distortion of a good thing) of the life-giving and society sustaining bond created by a man and woman in marriage.

If the previous bit of truth offended anyone here, kindly get over it. I’m not condemning my brothers and sisters to death in the name of “tolerance and acceptance.” Vote Democrat if you want them to whisper sweet, comforting lies in your ear.

Crist redefines “smarmy poseur”, and Graham costs us the high ground that we currently hold against Obambi on the “pansy” issue.

Jindal costs us on the experience issue, despite the fact that he is light years more accomplished than Barry.

Dear Lord, Mitt vs. Joe?

Jaibones on May 21, 2008 at 9:46 PM

I don’t know if he’s popular in FL

He’s popular in the liberal south but not with conservatives in the north. He is an out of the closet liberal and has always been. The republican party in Florida is screwed up. They gave us martinez and crist. Both two faced politicians. I’ve never voted for crist for public office and will either write in someone or not cast a vote for pres if crist is on the ticket. If it had been hillary against a mccain/crist ticket old hill would have got my vote.

dedalus on May 21, 2008 at 9:29 PM

If you are contending that the natural ability to procreate between a man and a woman should not be a consideration for a particular societal contract known as marriage and instead it should just be “any two humans willing to hook up in a bedroom,” there’s a lot of history that begs to differ.

Men and women lose their fertility over time. Homosexual couples don’t have any to begin with. It’s a fundamental difference that gay enablers look over because it is damning to their position. If you marry when you are older you are still providing a normal and healthy example of a relationship that, were it not for nature’s biological clock, would have you fruitful and multiplying. All the church requires is that your intimate relations be open to the possibility of life (even if creating such a life is statistically impossible). Homosexual relations defy the possibility of life by design. There is a 0% chance of life coming from a homosexual relationship whether the men or women are 26 or 62.

Of course, they don’t teach that anymore. People would rather lie about the church than do any actual study on her teachings and reasons.

Human beings (most beings, actually) are designed to procreate when they are young so that when they are old their offspring can take care of them.

Only a man and a woman can truly complement each other. That is the nature of things; that is the course borne out by all of history. We should not shatter what is good and sacred to cater to what is anomalous and aberrant. No functional society has ever been built on the backs of hedonistic fornicators. Usually when the hedonistic fornicators show up, the society starts to die off. Or would you like to argue that the “sexual revolution” was a boon to American culture rather than a festering boil that should be crushed and forgotten?

I would be shocked if Mitt took the number 2 slot. One, McCain is probably going to be radioactive at the end of his term; if the economy keeps going south, Romney’s future aspirations are done. I’m no Romney fan, but I’d rather see Huck pulled down like that because he’s an annoying a**hole and will be a troublemaker. If I was Mitt, I’d also have some trouble serving as McCain’s veep after some of the things McCain levelled at him during the primary. Mitt should stay clear, be ready to swoop in as a GOP alternative to McCain in 2012.
Crist looks like George Hamilton to me; I’ll never forgot Zorro the Gay Blade. ‘My names Bunny Wigglesworth.’ He’s got some whack views on the environment so I’d say he’d be a good match for Mccain.
Jindal would be stupid to be First Mate on Titanic with Capt. McCain. He should stay in Weezyanna and get some seasoning and show he’s got the chops everyone claims. Let the guy develop.
Gramnesty…well, before Huck started popping up like a gopher, Lindsey was my first prediction for VP. He’s from the south; he has that stupid Gomer Pyle accent; he looks like the freaking Campbell Soup Boy, and he’s already got McCain’s colon shaped to his face; he’d be perfect. He wouldn’t be as entertaining of a pick as Huck, but he would be the Veep that McCain deserves: a feckless lump.

austinnelly on May 21, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Oh God let it be Bobby Jindal. I think the guy is great, witty, smart, and can best represent the conservative ideals of the republican party. There are reservations for Romney and Crist. However, I would be comfortable with Joe Lieberman because is is just me or is he slowly (or rapidly) becoming a conservative?
Romney is good as well. I am just thinking about the inexplicable hostility between some Evangelicals with Romney’s religion. As well as some of the disdain between Romney’s camp and McCain’s. Also some of his waffling from liberal positions to conservative ones. Although I can completely understand since he was governor of a very liberal state.
So for me Jindal, Romney, or Lieberman for VP.

BKennedy on May 21, 2008 at 10:07 PM

I was addressing marriage rather than a sexual revolution. Regardless of gay marriage, many straight couples for whom child bearing is an impossibility (e.g., post-hysterectomy) find tremendous comfort in the trust, support and commitment of their relationship. They find that comfort on a day-to-day basis with the knowledge that their marriage will not include bearing children.

dedalus on May 21, 2008 at 10:36 PM

Homosexual couples don’t have any to begin with.

Something I’ve always wondered, how do homosexuals who claim that it is natural and that they are born that way explain why they produce sperm or ovulate. Seems like a wasted biological activity if you were born to not reproduce.

I seriously doubt the economy will still be going south for the next 5 years; it hasn’t done that since FDR instituted the new deal nightmare. I’d like to see Mitt in VP for sure, and I could live with some of the others suggested, but the economic issue is not a good argument against Mitt, in fact he is one of the few who could ensure the economy improves, assuming he can persuade his boss to move to the right.

.
That reflects more on the intelligence of the Huckabee supporters - someone should tell them he dropped out - the Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson voters all figured this out already.

Romney had the decency to have his name removed from the ballots he could. Huckabee did not and that is another of the strikes against him for the VP slot.

EJDolbow on May 22, 2008 at 12:00 AM

I hope no one drops anything around Charlie.

Thems fighting words to us Floridians, lay off my governor.

Squid Shark on May 22, 2008 at 12:02 AM

If McCain actually did something intelligent for once and put Romney on the VP slot….I would probably feel good voting for him. I dont have my hopes up though.

Roger Waters on May 22, 2008 at 12:04 AM

If thats the list for VP,its done!
It’ll be Mitt Romney,period!

canopfor on May 22, 2008 at 12:14 AM

I sincerely hope they enjoy themselves this weekend.

I’ll always be a mitten, but have affection for Jindal and admiration for Palin.

Domino on May 22, 2008 at 12:15 AM

and admiration for Palin.

I feel something when I see Palin, but I am not sure if it is admiration…

specially when she sued over Polar Bears today.

I think Mittens and my dear Governor (Crist) are going to have a “Who’s prettier?” Contest.

Hint: Charlie wins by a nose, even though they both resemble Sam the Eagle from the muppets.

Squid Shark on May 22, 2008 at 12:20 AM

If Jindal is a conservative, it’s better if he doesn’t go near this. What better way to neutralize a conservative than to make him VP?

“That Maniac is one heartbeat away from the presidency!”

-Sen Hannah on T.R. when the “neutralized” him by making him VP.

Squid Shark on May 22, 2008 at 12:45 AM

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) is backing the renewal of a $250 million-a-year program that will pay illegal immigrants’ hospital bills.

The very idea that McCain is again supporting a program that some view as rewarding illegal immigrants is certain to attract attention from the same conservatives he’s trying to win over for the White House.

The measure, which would reimburse hospitals for the cost of treating illegal immigrants, has broad support from both parties, including from some immigration hardliners and Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.).

Even some of McCain’s toughest critics on immigration admit it is a relatively benign program. But McCain’s association with it underscores his rift on immigration with the right wing, which sees him as championing amnesty for illegal immigrants.

“It’s another reminder that he’s ‘Amnesty John,’ ” said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the conservative Center for Immigration Studies, who nevertheless has no major objection to the proposal. “It’s another reminder of his role in promoting not just amnesty but promoting illegal immigration in the first place.”

An aide to McCain said the Arizona Republican stands by his position.

DfDeportation on May 22, 2008 at 12:49 AM

choosing lieberman would allow maccain to appeal to the center while enabling him to not actually move further in that direction himself, thereby not alienating “the base”.

seems that way to me, anyway…

i still like condi and palin, too.

This weekend “meeting” could be nothing more than a media stunt to sap some headlines away from the other two.

I think Obama is definitely beatable, regardless of what the BO analysts say so I’d be stoked to see Romney on the McCain ticket. If I thought Obama was UN-beatable, I’d hate to waste Romney’s talent in a losing effort.

There is the real possibility of a MA Senate seat opening up which Romeny would be great for although it might appear that he backed into the position.

He’d make an amazing RNC Chairman too…a position that desperately needs leadership.

JetBlast on May 22, 2008 at 1:17 AM

Please Lord, let this cup pass

-Bobby Jindal

Let’s not tie the McCain anchor around someone with a future. Go ahead and take Charlie Crist down in maverick flames with you. Bobby can go for the top of the ticket in 2012

So true, but I was trying not to say it, heh. Our ruling class seems to run on formaldehyde these days, so I wouldn’t count on it. More likely Jindal would fall mysteriously ill.

That’s why I like Sarah Palin, because she knows that $135 oil should send millions of people running over to Greenpeace with bats in their hands.
I only wish McCain wasn’t such a dipshit.

I swear - isn’t a former Muppet the present head of the RNC? I can’t remember his name, but nobody else can, either.
That is what passes for leadership these days in the smoking hole that used to be the Republican Party.

TexasJew on May 22, 2008 at 1:58 AM

Jindal — No - Let him clean up Louisiana first
Crist — NOOOO! - McCain doesn’t tan well
Romney — maybe - at least we’ll have a good looking veep
Lieberman — sure, why not, oy vey, what Mashugana!!!
Graham — see Lieberman

But choose wisely McCain

Yeah! Lets punish the hospitals for not letting those effing illegals rot in the street in violation of their oath. Good plan.

Squid Shark on May 22, 2008 at 6:49 AM

As a friendly gesture, McCain has invited these guys to inform them that he has seen the light and was donning the sack cloth and ashes to join with Huckaflea on the holy crusade to bring the entire country back to the middle ages with a systematic purge of those atheistic scientists who contaminate the youth with that devil’s tool called reason. The separation of church and state question will be resolved once and for all by eliminating the state and then purging all the false creeds in favor of the fundamentalist 6000 year old earth gang.

McCain’s gesture will allow the others to jump onto the Barr bandwagon and watch from afar as Imam Obama rides into Washington on his white camel.

Picking a candidate based on looks is wise? Would you please compare Mitt and Graham’s conservative record? I don’t think it’s possible to find a more conservative Republican than Lindsey. McCain is doing a good job on the campaign trail and the immigration deal is dead, we killed it remember?

I, too, am a Floridian (St. Pete). Not fighting words to me, just honesty. I know Charlie, his home (condo) is across the street from my office. Known him for years, know his dad, Dr. Crist.

The creature is gayer than gay and that’s a fact.

Yeah, because Romney hasn’t been on the ballot.

I say they have a ping-pong tourny. Whoever wins becomes the VP.
Or
a shooting contest to make sure the VP won’t shoot anyone on a hunting trip.
Or
Who can get the nastiest with the news journalists.
Or
What candidate would p*ss off the Dems the most.
Or
Which one has the hottest wife.
Or
So many ways to choose a VP.
