NYT: McCain to meet with Jindal, Crist, Romney about VP this weekend? Update: Purely social, says McCain camp; Update: Lieberman, Graham also attending

What, no Huck? I thought he topped the shortlist. Or is this the new, post-joke reality, after the classless people on the Internet raised such a ruckus?
Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, on Friday is scheduled to meet with two Republican governors who have been prominently mentioned as potential running mates, according to Republicans familiar with Mr. McCain’s plan.
Charlie Crist, the governor of Florida, and Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, have both accepted invitations to meet with Mr. McCain at his home in Arizona, according to Republican familiars with the decision. One Republican said that Mitt Romney, a former rival of Mr. McCain for the presidential nomination — is also expected to visit him this weekend. Mr. Romney’s advisers declined to comment.
Tim Pawlenty’s evidently attending a wedding this weekend; it’s not clear if he was invited. We’ve had endless threads about the VP prospects of Jindal (more than one) and Romney (many, many, many more than one) and a few piecemeal takes on Crist. Follow those links for the arguments; if this is the full shortlist then Romney clearly has the advantage. Skim through this new Survey USA poll of California too as you mull, as they decided to test various McCain vs. Obama tickets — including McCain/Lieberman — against each other. Surprisingly, it’s McCain/Huckabee that does the best, with McCain/Romney a close second. Exit question: Does any of it matter? The juggernaut’s a-comin’!
Update: False alarm. Turns out Maverick just wants to spend Memorial Day weekend hanging out with friends, three of whom happen to be top VP contenders and one of whom is literally half his age and hails from an entirely different part of the country.
Update: Liebs and Grahamnesty will also be there, although they’re basically part of McCain’s entourage.

Heh. With that definition, nearly all of Mitt’s positions were flip-flops. Thing is, we only got to see the “flop”. Mitt desperately wanted everyone to buy that he had “flipped” in the first place.

I like Romney, but he shouldn’t be VP.
McCain needs someone with solid pro-2nd credentials, its one of the few things that should help him, despite his idiotic fixation on the non-existent “gun show loophole.” Those rural blue collar, pro-life, pro-gun Democrats he’s banking on in states like PA aren’t gonna like a slick guy who’s a squish on life and gun issues.
God friggin’ help me, I think I agree with Big S on something…

MrLynn, in rereading my post, it appeared to me that it could have seemed as worded to be a personal slap at you. Not at all my intent.

Romney can wear a cow suit, or any other “form” he’d like if he could win a seat in the US Senate from Massachusetts.
He would be by far, hands-down, the best we could get out of there.
But it’s not nice to play politics with inoperable brain cancer….just a thought that I’m not all that proud of, to be honest.

That worry has been debunked by every HA pundit save a handful. Anthropologists have been brought in to prove they are all crossovers, never-show-up-agains, or sore-losers. We must not question that…we…must….not.

Nope Baby is fine, unless special needs means they have to keep an eye on the child due to her age and the umbilical cord issue.
Come on Funky, think about it. If she can run a State, with 5 kids, get 5 corrupt politicans taken out (don’t care if they are D’s or R’s) get a natural gas line started via agreements, clean up the budget AND lower it as well as give surplus BACK to the people of the State… you don’t think she couldn’t be a VP for the Union?
Heck VP may as well be a cake walk… OK OK Just Kidding.
upinak on May 21, 2008 at 6:26 PM
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
THAT’s what this is about. You’re obviously not a conservative. Just a SOCIAL conservative. Most of the readers here are pretty strong on the “3 Legged Stool” of Conservatism thing. You are a stool with one leg. The Club for Growth fights hard to elect fiscal conservatives and out the RINOs. They did a great job defeating Dan “RINO” Meuser in the Republican primary here in PA-10 by backing Hackett, a three-legged stool conservative. They didn’t back Huck, another one legged stool guy and THAT’s what gets you angry. Look at his views on foreign policy and fiscal policy…Huck’s no full-spectrum conservative. I hate to have to do this but, this is a RINO hunt and you’re the hunted.
Ha. That’d be AWESOME.
I thought the same thing the other day, but think about the blow to his career if he lost 65-35 or something. And MA is soooo blue it would take a miracle to win…or even come close.

EJDolbow on May 21, 2008 at 6:27 PM
Quite a damning response there. Yes he raised taxes, but he left a surplus, pissed off liberals, and I thought he was conservative! Yeah, he pardoned criminals that went on to murder and pardoned more criminals than 3 governors combined, but he thought it was necessary! Sure he awarded kids of illegals, but it wouldn’t have been nice to punish kids just because their parents have absolutely no right to be here!

Anyway, I have some non-political things to get done. Ciao for now, folks.
amerpundit on May 21, 2008 at 6:30 PM
Me too, and I thought he was a disappointing Secretary of State. I’m just thinking in terms of moving the independents and more Democrats to McCain, and upsetting the Obambi applecart.
Normally, you want your VP choice to pretty much guarantee you some major electoral votes, at least a big home state. But this criterion has been going by the boards lately (W’s choice of Cheney, for example). If not electoral votes, then you want a national figure; there isn’t much time after the convention to introduce an obscure governor (Crist, Sanford, Pawlenty) to the rest of the country.
Powell still has hero status for many people, and he is, shall we say, a “person of color.” My guess is that he would not accept. That really leaves Romney, or (long-shot) Condi Rice.
My fears: Lindsay Grahamnnesty (but chances are McCain won’t want to pull another Republican [of sorts] out of the Senate), or Tom Ridge (one of the least dynamic guys I’ve ever seen on TV).
Fred Thompson would be a great choice for conservatives, but he looks way too old, and he doesn’t want the job.
MrLynn on May 21, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Again, Jindal needs more time. Even though he has a more solid resume than Obama has now at 36.
Of the four mentioned, I think I’m liking Pawlenty. Can anybody tell me about Tom Ridge’s record in Pennsylvania?
Harpoon on May 21, 2008 at 6:32 PM
He should consider her. She’d bring more to the ticket than some of the other names. If her resume was a little deeper I think she’d be the top choice.
dedalus on May 21, 2008 at 6:32 PM
hmmmm dunno. Deval Patrick is quite the embarrassment, isn’t he? I mean, he really makes Romney look brilliant by comparison, and the people in MA aren’t stupid?
Any MA residents here who could shed some light?

You’re trying to tell me that the dump that produced Billy Jeff is actually….conservative? Man, I know love is blind…but Huckalove as well?
malan89 on May 21, 2008 at 6:32 PM
I’m really not that concerned who he picks, but not only must current electability be factored in, but the prospect of becoming the nominee in 2012 or 2016.
Though it’s not a terribly strong conviction on my part, I’d prefer it wasn’t Romney. In too many regards he campaigned as “Obama-lite”- right down to the silly “change” and “yes we can” memes that were short on specifics. He also represented the “Big Government Conservative” wing, complete with support for more farm subsidies, corporate welfare, federal education spending and gun control.
Perhaps they were just empty campaign promises, but I don’t view him as the one to lead the Republican party out of the special interest and spending mess that it’s currently in. Factor in the unfortunate and unfair anti-Mormon bias and lack of foreign policy credentials and I have to think McCain could do better than Mitt.
Not that it matters that much what I think- living in a reliably blue state (MN) means that I can refrain from voting for McCain guilt-free as my vote wouldn’t count for anything in the first place.
Hollowpoint on May 21, 2008 at 6:33 PM

Heh. Franken losing won’t change the fact that Obama will take MN. Even if McCain took 45 states, it’s a safe bet that MN wouldn’t be one of them.
Hollowpoint on May 21, 2008 at 6:40 PM
It could matter if they find any heart or lung issues…often associated with Down’s. But babies with Down’s often have nursing problems and other stuff that make diagnosis not that difficult.
I just can’t even begin to imagine doing a national, grueling campaign where you’d have to debate and do other stuff with a teeny baby, even a 100% healthy one.
funky chicken on May 21, 2008 at 6:40 PM
I think he was making a point about Gov. Palin’s strength. If she can raise 4 kids and one with Down’s while running the biggest state in the country, she is one strong lady. That and you said the baby was “fine”. I certainly wouldn’t say a child that has Down’s syndrome is “fine” and “without special needs”. Having to raise a child with special needs is one of the most difficult tasks a person can face. But, also one of the most rewarding.
malan89 on May 21, 2008 at 6:40 PM
I dunno (disclaimer I’m not a Crist fan). Seems like Johnny Mac can take Florida on his own. He needs someone to lock in Ohio and make a case for PA.

She is doing fine now and her children help. That is ONE family that is close.
As for the nursing homes and such… I doubt that Trig will have to deal with any of that. Todd, Sarah’s husband, has family all over Alaska as well as Sarah’s own. Alaskans take care of their own, on many different levels.

Only problem I have with Sara is she is from Alaska. That doesnt help McCain electorially. But then losing her as governor wouldnt be as bad as losing Jindal as governor.
Really really wish there was a strong conservative elected woman as governor or senator(Other than Palin). They are all moderates.
I will state I dont care as much about VP as I am worried about the party and the nation.

I’m convinced PA and OH are gonna go McCain as long as Hillary doesn’t manage to steal the nomination at the convention. Lot of anti-Obama (not racist, just anti-Obama) sentiment up here. FL may be a different story (much more urban), but I think
some of this alsoEVERYTHING depends on how Obama shapes his message in the general (stays solid liberal, or spins a hard right to moderate) and his VP pick.malan89 on May 21, 2008 at 6:46 PM

If Jindal bails on LA after serving only a few months of his term it just wouldn’t look good to a lot of voters. They’ll get over it. Hopefully McCain and Jindal can work something out. He’s the best option on the table.

As you and I discussed on another blog here in HA, we both agree Jindal needs to take care of LA… in more ways then one.

One more thing on Palin….before 2006 (when elected as Gov) she was the mayor of Wasilla, AK….a town of about 8000 people. The experience thing will DEFINITELY come up. That and she’s only 42.
malan89 on May 21, 2008 at 6:50 PM
Romney is just too intelligent, quick witted and well spoken to pass up. Romney’s perfomances in the debates prove this statement as true. Plus Romney has relaxed a bit since dropping from the race and has only gotten better on the stump. Plus his good looks.
McCain needs a strong, loyal wingman; Romney’s comment awhile back, when Clinton & Obama were fighting who is the stronger on defense, was akin to two chihuahua’s fighting who’s the bigger dog was classic.
McCain is the big dog on miliary affairs and Romney is the big dog in economic affairs. Strongest team to go up against this supposed Obama “juggernaut”.
We shall see. Six months ago we were suppose to be seeing a Rudy/Hillary race.
Obama’s a weak candidate. Even with all his affirmitive action press coverage, gobs of money and his rock star status he still hasn’t effectively knocked Hillary out of the race.
Plus his closet hasn’t been fully vetted yet. I’m just starting to hear things about his connection to the Kenya PM and the PM’s promise to Islamist extremist factions in that country. I think we are going to be hearing a lot more about this and other shady FOO’s (Friends Of Obama).
McCain/Romney is the best, smartest ticket for the GOP to run this fall. Actually I think they should do it now and show everyone that they are ready to start this fight and that they are ready to win it.
I’m so sick of this primary season and all this punditry of who’s going to be the democratic nominee, who’s going to be the VP’s…..let’s get it on :)

Eh. McCain’s got the experience part covered. He needs someone young, healthy, energetic, and preferably appealing to one or more identity groups or states that we need. We don’t need more of what McCain’s got (experience, age, Senator, military background, etc.) We need someone who appears to balance him and offset his weaknesses.
Spent the last few minutes reading more about Palin. Impressive lady! I would be pleased to see her on the ticket.

Would you like to know something else about Palin which many here may see as a bad item on her resume.
She was at one time a democrat and switched parties because of some serious issues concernign the democrats here in Alaska and Washington where many of her extended family lives.
Sarah is very much like Reagan. In demeanor, her candid nature and her way of deflecting bad emotions in a positive way. I only remember seeing her become upset once.
Also the other “bad item” is she actually started a tax for the Wasilla. Not because she wanted to, but Wasilla at the time was not able to make roads better, or bring in revenue. She and her assembly came together and decided to make a very small sales tax of 2.1 percent, which has helped Wasilla flurish and not DIE, as many of the little towns here in Alaska are doing.
Sarah is very much a conservative, but she also understands the value of a dollar and what has to be done in moderation for her Town and as well as this State to survive.

Jindal might not want to risk his political future on an underdog campaign. LA can forgive him for sidestepping his gubernatorial obligations as long as he and McCain win. If McCain/Jindal loses, it doesn’t leave much of a place for Jindal in the Republican political landscape. He can’t go back to LA and say, “sorry for bailing, how about a seat in the Senate?” Jindal would be awesome for the McCain ticket; it’s just that the McCain ticket could be awful for Jindal.
Crist raises a couple of problems. First, he puts an exclamation point on the Republican party’s “Old White Guy’s Club” image. Second, just by his close association with Florida he loses the game of six-degrees-of-George-Bush game everybody is going to be playing this fall.
It’s all politics, nothing to do with who would actually make the best Vice President.

Good case for Romney. All things considered (as they say on NPR), he’s almost certainly the best choice. Might upstage McCain, but John’s ego is big enough to withstand that.
I asked on a PowerLine Forum thread whether Romney could bring Michigan into the Republican column. The answer was a resounding ‘No!’
But I’m not so sure. There are a lot of Reagan Democrats in Michigan. . . .

Do you contest my post? Mitt changed his positions on issues like abortion, gun control, health care, gay rights, and others, for everyone to see, between the time he was elected governor and the end of his term. That’s the “flop”. His defense against the opportunism charge was basically “hey, I was just being opportunistic in the past; now, I’m back to agreeing with you conservatives, which was my position all along” OR ” hey, I never bothered to think through abortion before until someone asked me about stem cell research; come to think of it, I’m conservative on that issue – my bad!” Neither of those really passes the laugh test.

Please, please not Crist. I voted for him because he’s all we had. Something’s just not right about him. He gives me the creeps.
(and please, tell me he’s not gay. :~(
Romney!!!

heh…True, but as far as I see it, McCain is going to pick Crist as veep. Done deal.
If I’m wrong, I’ll wear an “I *heart* Obama” shirt for a day. Or worse, I’ll wear a Yankee’s jersey. And us Mets fans are naturally allergic to those.

I’ve heard these gay rumors about both Grahmnesty and Crist. I doubt either of them are true, but if they are….is it possible McCain is trying to set them up?

And did I mention she is a former Miss Alaska?

Would it really make any difference if Crist were gay? Just ’cause someone’s single, doesn’t mean they’re gay.

Thank you for saving my gasket from blowing.

Count my vote for Fred Thompson. He’s still the best man for the job.
But barring that, I think the idea of selecting Sarah Palin as a running mate is a potential gold mine. Unless she has bad skeletons in her closet, it would level the playing field by putting a “minority” (woman) on the ticket (though women are actually the majority…I know, I know).
If McCain plays his cards right (and I see indications that he can), he will win this election, and it won’t even be that close. Barrack Obama is starting to act like a rookie. Now he’s wasting money on a negative campaign against McCain. I think that is Backfire City, Arizona.
I got $25 at sportsbook.com riding on it – I have skin in the game.

Why not put a smart person on the ticket? Someone who has bailed out the winter olympics in Utah. Someone who has managed many businesses quite successfully. Someone who has been a governor of a state and knows how to work within that structure with a house and a senate to get things done. Sounds like Mitt to me.
