The patriarchal condescension of Bob Corker, and The Rumor

Women have fought for equality in the workplace and the public square for decades, and now that they have achieved it, two men believe that women have to be protected from big, bad men who criticize their political speeches. The first, Barack Obama, comes as no surprise; he wants to minimize the political damage from a speech Michelle Obama gave at the beginning of February. The second, Republican Senator Bob Corker, has no such excuse:

The office of Senator Bob Corker, Republican from Tennessee, has weighed in today, siding with Senator Barack Obama’s objections to the state’s G.O.P. Web campaign against Michelle Obama.

To recap, the officialdom of the Tennessee G.O.P. posted a Web spot that mines remarks Mrs. Obama made in February that “first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country.” The ad repeats footage of her speaking those words, interspersed with comments from Tennesseans, talking about how they’ve always been proud to be an American. …

Today, Mr. Corker’s chief of staff, Todd Womack, demanded that his boss’ state party remove the Web ad:

After the Republican National Committee damaged our campaign with their infamous ‘Call Me’ ad — which we immediately denounced — we have strongly encouraged the national party and state parties to absolutely refrain from getting involved in negative personal campaigning, and we have asked the state party to remove their You Tube ad from their Web site.

Republicans will be in much better shape if we spend our time focused on issues like reducing federal spending, lowering the cost of health care and creating a coherent energy policy.

Here’s the ad in question:

As I wrote yesterday, anyone who delivers speeches at campaign events had better grow a thick enough skin to take criticism for their statements, and that includes the spouses of candidates. No one suggested that Bill Clinton’s statements on the stump should get excepted from criticism, and the Obama campaign didn’t follow that policy when decrying Bill’s divisiveness when Bill called Obama’s story on his Iraq policy a “fairy tale”. Why didn’t they observe the spousal exemption then? Is it because Bill’s a man and not a poor woman who requires the protection of her men?

When spouses become campaign surrogates, as Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton, and Cindy McCain have, then their statements on the stump are completely fair game for criticism. The Tennessee GOP should continue to run this ad, and Corker should worry less about protecting women from themselves and more about whether he can carry his state for John McCain in the fall.

But while we’re on the subject, why is a Hillary Clinton supporter trying to flack a rumor about Michelle Obama — and blaming it on the GOP? Larry Johnson over at No Quarter has written about a video showing Mrs. Obama at the pulpit at Trinity United Church of Christ “railing against “whitey.” Supposedly, the Republicans — including the bete noir of Democrats, Karl Rove — paid a lot of money for the reel, which will destroy an Obama candidacy if the Democrats nominate him.

Yeah, sure. I don’t believe it for a second. This smells a lot like a political dirty trick aimed at both Obama and the Republicans, on a par with the “love child” smear against McCain in 2000. First, as someone who actually read Mrs. Obama’s Princeton thesis, it doesn’t match up with her outlook:

I have bad news for those who hoped to mine some gold in this thesis; it’s not there. It’s a typical college thesis that has perhaps a slightly more personal nature than most. It’s a well-written look at the differences between black alumni’s socialization patterns with blacks and whites before and during their Princeton years, and the effect that it had after their graduation.

It found — surprise! — that black students who socialized more with whites before and during Princeton were more comfortable with whites later, and those who didn’t, weren’t. Interestingly, they all more closely identified with the black community during the Princeton years, and that mostly declined when they went out into the world afterwards. There were more subtle variations on ideological trends, and attempts to drill down into “literateness” and other subjective analyses, which made the project rather ambitious if not completely convincing. At the conclusion, she acknowledges that her more hard-line attitudes and assumptions about blacks who did not meet her definition of “identification” were incorrect and naive.

In the paper, she started off with some hard-line hypotheses, but found the truth more subtle and moderate. She certainly could have gotten more radical in her beliefs about race relations in America, but most people tend to get less so as they gain more real-world experience, especially as successes build. And frankly, nothing in her life suggests she would be stupid enough to have made speeches like that in public knowing the political ambitions her husband held.

Unless these tapes actually surface, I’m considering them a smear from an increasingly desperate band of Hillary Clinton supporters. Michelle Obama says enough during campaign appearances to merit criticism without indulging in paranoid fantasies.

Why didn’t they observe the spousal exemption then?

Because this is a very effective ad and Bill Blythe still thinks he’s the teflon don.

BTW, Corker is a wuss and explains why conservatives are Highly Annoyed that it seems no one in D. C. in OUR party wants to “offend” the Demorats but will allow those same Demorats to demean fellow citizens (military members not exempt from this either – Haditha anyone?) and our party then stabs us in the back for saying anything in response…

Branch Rickey on May 20, 2008 at 1:04 PM

I think the ad is amateurish, but don’t understand BO’s whining about the offense to the little lady. In real life isn’t she a highly paid, Ivy-educated lawyer? I don’t have her education or opportunities, but were we in the same position, my husband’s response would be “politics are rough, but my wife can take care of herself.”

Unless BO is patronizing his wife, the real objection is that the ad hits home.

Maybe Michelle should run for President and Barry can be First Lady, or maybe the downstairs maid.

Buy Danish on May 20, 2008 at 12:37 PM

I have long thought that Michelle is running for President. Barry is the vehicle. She chose him for certain reason, just as he chose her. Keep your eyes on her. Barry may never be seen again if he loses, but she will likely end up in the Senate.

JiangxiDad on May 20, 2008 at 1:36 PM

That’s okay.

It’s now fair game to ask Cindy McCain if she thinks it’s morally acceptable to sleep with someone else’s husband.

I can say that I have noticed growing hostility among the melanin enhanced residents of my fair city (Montgomery, AL) over the last few months. Where I used to enjoy friendly chats with AA clerks and such, now they are more likely to be surly and cold.

It’s new behavior…we lived here a decade ago and it wasn’t like this nearly as much. And the AA talk radio is much more strident than it was even 18 months ago.

I’m a female and was always mystified by the reports that Clinton was “the Robert Redford of politics” that I heard in 1991-1992. I’d thought that Redford should sue them at the time..

FAIR GAME??

Please since when has this brand of filthy Rovian politicking gotten branded with the word FAIR?

There is not one thing fair about it, period.

It’s sleazy, it’s swarmy and The GOP should start first off by listening to both Newt and Corker and sticking to the issues, rather than imitating and emulating Daily Kos and The Far Left blogs.

That attack on Howard Ford was disguting. No wait, it was desparate and childish.

When the GOP grows up we will win again. We are now in the position the Dems were when Rove and Bush used to chide them on their childishness and name calling and not speaking about the issues or offering the American people answers and alternatives.

We have become them back then, we make fun of people and call them names, try to link this one to that one in desparation, use childish high school smears, because we are politically bankrupt.

And it’s only going to get worse, because stubborn people tend not to listen or to learn.

I agree with Newt on this one, I wouldn’t waste my time on her. I would concentrate on making the strong points with the American People like the GOP did in the past.

No, the base (real conservatives, not RINO’s)would rather have someone stand when the opposition is wrong, stand up and be forceful in telling the opposition to crap in their hats. Obama and his pissed off wife do not make the rules of engagement for conservatives. If the republicans want to act like pacifists, they will win nothing.

Calling Barack Obama a Halfrican does what to sell Conservatism to the American people??

These are the tactics The Left has used, is using and will always resort to – they bad mouth The GOP hoping that will get them elected.

Conservatives always ran on something more substantive and got the message out to the masses without belittling and berating their opponents and adversaries.
Why is this

AprilOrit on May 20, 2008 at 4:24 PM

Meant to write – why is this not the Conservative norm these days?

AprilOrit on May 20, 2008 at 4:25 PM

I tend on balance to believe there is something to the rumor, that yes indeed Michelle Obama is on video somewhere railing against “whitey.”

Otherwise, why the Obama campaign push-back? They want Michelle Obama out of bounds so her railing against “whitey” doesn’t hurt them when it inevitably comes out.

I think selling Conservatism to the public the way Newt and the GOP did before will get better results.

The public is not listening, they don’t want to hear one party bash the other. They are sick to death of the partisan divide, period.

The public wasn’t listening to the Dems back in 2004 and they are not going to listen to the GOP now.

They want to hear about the issues and real answers to real problems.

AprilOrit on May 20, 2008 at 5:02 PM

So according to larry Johnson this Right Wing billionaire wants – ahem – Shllbilly to win?? That’s hilarious, who is it Richard Mellon Scaife??

But the real reason for Obama’s extraordinary freakout is that he fears the release of the videotape, reported here, of Michelle Obama in the pulpit of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church railing against “whitey.” And we don’t mean Whitey Ford. Four Republican sources have told me that the tape exists. I’ve also been informed that Karl Rove and his allies have a copy of it and are using it to raise funds for independent expenditure groups. The tape, I’m told, will be disclosed as the GOP October Surprise. It’s a ticking time bomb.

And I’ve learned that a right-wing Republican billionaire has put a $1 million bounty on the video. He doesn’t want John McCain to win, like a number of conservatives, and thinks Obama is a pathetically weak candidate. The billionaire wants that video released now.

Obama, speaking on ABC’s “Good Morning America” showed fear through his name-calling: “If they think that they’re gonna try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful. Because, that I find unacceptable. … The notion that you start attacking my wife or my family — you know, Michelle is the most honest, the best person I know. She is one of the most caring people I know. She loves this country. And for them to try to distort or to play snippets of her remarks in ways that are unflattering to her I think is … just low class.”

Does Obama have a copy of the “whitey” video? We know that he knows that his wife knows. The video really does exist. If we have to wait until October to see it, Obama might explode before then from the tension.

AprilOrit on May 20, 2008 at 5:11 PM

Hey AprilOrit, what is wrong with attacking a candidate’s position that Americans should not be proud of America until and unless we elect him? The fact that the person who articulated this position was the candidate’s wife speaking at a campaign event changes this how?

Do you know the difference between a warning and a desire?

Is the opposition running it’s campaign on “substance”? Hope, Change, Wish, click your heels together three times and say Yes We Can.

No thanks, I’m not interested in letting the cult leader and his cult following get a free ride. That’s the job of the MSM.

Sure, we can hit the opposition hard with substance and a cornicopia of cold hard facts. But that’s only one arrow in our quiver. When Obama uses the mantra tactics of the MSM and tells everyone McCain said we will be fighting the war in Iraq for a hundred years, someone on our side has to stand up and flat-out say “You’re a lying sack of shlt”. Why? Because he is, and needs to be called on it. Because he isn’t stating any facts, he’s creating wild fairy tales out of thin air.

The MSM won’t do it. So Republicans are left with that task.

I have to agree that we can do more without the name calling. I felt the MO ad was a little overkill interspersing MO so often. Starting out with her statement and following it with ordinary patriots’ comments would have gotten the message across. An ad stressing the many things multiple people feel pride in about our nation would perhaps been a more positive way to state the point. I am proud of our brave men and women who serve in the military. I am proud of the police and firefighters who gallantly serve. I am proud of parents who strive to raise their children to be good citizens. I could go on and on…..

I still insist that the Obamas will set race relations back by quite a bit. It wasn’t necessary. He could have run on a true race-menging platform, but they chose not to, Change, Hope, Unity, and Yes We Can ra, ra, ra, notwithstanding.

It became transparent soon enough and crystalized with Michelle’s speeches, and the Rev. Wright’s revelations. It’s really very, very sad, because the Blacks, the Whites, and the country deserve way better.

Michelle is fair game, especially when her words are not misreprensented like McCain’s words are so frequently misrepresented by Obama. I think they were a little too much redundant in the ad, but that’s what she said… on several occassions until it got nationwide notice and then all the sudden it’s “what I meant to say….”

Unless these tapes actually surface, I’m considering them a smear from an increasingly desperate band of Hillary Clinton supporters. Michelle Obama says enough during campaign appearances to merit criticism without indulging in paranoid fantasies.

I believe “something” is out there…otherwise why is Mrs. Clinton staying in the race?

You should peep in the Ted Kennedy brain tumor thread. Many are falling over themselves to “play nice” with an enemy of America all because he’s going to *gasp* die. As if no one else has ever died of a brain tumor. Please, spare me!!!

Geez, if I am ever in an outnumbered bar fight, I hope funky doesn’t have my back.

That was funny! :)

I’m with ya!

I just LOVED the way the guy who spoke about his pastor making an outrageous rant on the video was the last one. That was classic…!

If we cannot say anything in reagrds to Obombem, (his middle name, the Wrong Rev. Wright, his wife, his background, etc.) then let’s not say anything at the polls by not voting for him so he can take his wife back home and fade away.

Lovely, you sound like Michael Savage. That will help the GOP.

Shillbilly will manufacture one if it doesn’t.

You guys are the ones who want to cry and hand the country to Obama, not me. And seeing as how I don’t go into seedy bars (I am a military officer’s wife, after all) you needn’t worry about my behavior in a bar fight.
