Sorry for the delay on this. There are already 100+ comments iin Headlines but it wouldn’t seem right not to post on it, so here it is. Genuinely shocking, not only because of the diagnosis but the prognosis. Read the Globe’s harrowing piece if you haven’t stumbled upon it elsewhere yet. It sounds like he has two to three years if he’s lucky, although it could be much less than that. The word “terminal” is used; one neurologist quoted says he’ll likely have to retire in the “near future.”
Here’s awful video from CNN of Byrd reacting to the news. He wasn’t the only one crying today. Click the image to watch.
Update (Ed): We talked about this on the show today, and it’s worth repeating here. Americans of all political beliefs come to the open forum and debate great issues with great passion. Everyone believes that they act for the benefit of America, even if others think their ideas dangerous and ill-conceived. We would rather have our ideas prevail because we convinced others of the rightness of our cause than to see opponents retreat because of illness and death.
Our opponents are still Americans and still human beings, and we hold Kennedy and his family in our prayers tonight.

We are all sinners – but I would argue that most of us didn’t leave someone to drown in a car to protect our own personal situation.
Sin is sin – but some sins are more egregious than others. And yes, we should bring up his past transgressions – why lionize him just because he’s sick? His cancer doesn’t take absolve him of the sin of, at the very least, manslaughter.

An observation of who mentioned prayer for Kennedy, and who didn’t, in this AP article:
Barack’s quote contained no mention of prayer, only “support”. I checked Obama’s site and don’t see any mention of prayer there, either (although that may change quickly once the Obama staffers read this comment).
That’s a bit strange for the man who portrays himself like this.

He’s lived a long life, one that Mary Jo Kopechne didn’t have.
This is a sad day for the Kennedy family. Let’s hope cancer research will find some help quickly.
Please, retire now, Senator and enjoy the time left with your family. You won’t regret that you did…

All the best to his family.

The Christian values that this country were founded on have been attacked by the ACLU and democratic liberals for decades. As a result, the attacks on Christian values is now approaching its zenith. Kennedy is on the threshold of finding out if they were right or wrong.

Byrd sounds creepy as hell in that video…

No sympathy here. There is a difference between people like Kennedy and people like Tony Snow. There should also be a difference in how they are thought of when they are dealt a bad hand. Evil is evil, and this is one individual I believe to be evil, and therefore undeserving of sympathy. That is simply what I personally believe.

I’m not surprised at the reaction of many people to Kennedy’s illness. But what I do find sickening is that those who feel no empathy towards Kennedy would choose to post notes to that effect in a public place. It’s a cruel, pointless, senseless thing to do to the family members during a time like this.
Remember, a man’s family is hurting at the moment. And now, because his ideological opponents can’t put down their pitchforks for a few days, they get to see that vitriol spewed in a public place.
Ya gotta love the anonymity of the Internet. All kinds of behavior that would have been utterly shameful in civilized society is acceptable because you can’t be held accountable for what you have to say. And we wonder at the decline in common decency.

“Distinguished Senator”
Oh, pulleeeeze…..
A woman died, and this stellar example of humanity gets a pass?
I’ve hated this guy for almost 40 years for his callous and selfish indifference and I sincerely hope he burns in hell.

As Catholic mothers pray, “Give it to God.”
May the Holy Spirit comfort the Kennedys.
God’s Speed, Teddy. God’s Will be done.

God Speed Teddy.

I’m 49 years old. As young as I was at the time, I lost it for Ted after what he did to Mary Jo.
As young as I was, I remember watching the news stories about the excuses Teddy used to explain his actions that day. I could not believe anybody was buying it!
I think thats when I decided NOT ever to be a Democrat!
As sorry as I am for his family, the man is the epitome of evil.

Evil can manifest itself in many ways.
Thank you, Geek for stating things so eloquently. When we dehumanize others we lose a part of ourselves in the process.

God puts evil people in high place for purposes we can only hope to eventually understand. I hope to also accept this reptile’s place in history at some point. I have heard nothing but venom and corruption flow from his mouth over the decades, and I have no sympathy nor respect for his wickedness. His legacy is one of darkness and deception.

There are a lot of dishonest posts in this thread. Lots of pretense. I applaud those of you who refused to pretend to feel sympathy for this menace to society. It is what it is – a loathsome man is finally going to account for his sins.
If you think it’s ungodly to pray for God to destroy the wicked, or if you think it’s ungodly to rejoice at the ultimate defeat of evil men, try reading Psalms sometime.
