I’m sure he didn’t mean any malice by it either. It was still a boneheaded thing to say.

BadgerHawk on May 20, 2008 at 10:14 PM

We knew he issued a TV apology for telling an assassination joke to an NRA audience about Sen. Barack Obama, but now former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee reveals to us that he also made a personal apology call to the likely Democratic presidential nominee.

Day 1: I caught a fish this big.
Day 2: I caught a fish thiiiis big.
Day 3: I caught a fish THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS big.

I see the same thing happens with bad jokes. Yeesh.

I thought I was reading John McCain apologizing after a slip-of-tongue attack on Hussein during their debate.

But I guess I saw it ahead of time.

My bad.

So what if Barack Hussein accepted his apology or forgave him.
What remains is the fact that if McCain picks Huck as his running mate, the rest of the Left will never let anyone forget these remarks, and they’ll sink the ticket faster than the “macaca” remarks sank George Allen. Remember him?

Of course, were Huckabee to actually become McCain’s VP choice, this little faux pas would never be brought up by the Democrats or the big media outlets, and if it was, a simple restatement by Huck that Obama accepted his apology would be enough to make sure it was never used as an issue against McCain or any other Republicans running for office during the rest of the campaign. Don’t fret too much. The online polling during the republican debates showed Ron Paul would win the nomination by 40 or more percentage points, and those were more accurate than this. McCain isn’t stupid enough to put the Huckabigot on his ticket.

Meh; Huckster’s supporters have long since fallen into Ron Paul territory in their cultish devotion and spamming of Internet polls. Nothing he says, does or has done will put them off so long as he maintains his self-proclaimed “Christian Leader” status since that’s the only thing they care about.

Hollowpoint on May 20, 2008 at 10:57 PM

Well yeah, of course he didn’t mean anything by it. But it shows very poor judgment.

The US presidency is a very dangerous job. Our country has had 42 presidents so far, and 4 of them were assassinated, not to mention those who survived assassination attempts.

Man responsible for murder of Waco girl denied appeal hearing by Supreme Court
Updated: May 19, 2008 7:07pm
The U.S. Supreme Court Monday declined to hear the appeal of Texas death row inmate Ramiro Ibarra condemned over the 1987 murder of a 16-year-old Waco girl.

Maria Zuniga was looking after two young nephews at her home when Ibarra raped and strangled her.

Attorneys for the inmate have argued he’s mentally retarded and ineligible for capital punishment under court guidelines.

The 53-year-old Mexican national also contends he was denied legal assistance from the Mexican consulate after his arrest.

Speaking of denials, Monday brought out a recent admission by Ed Rollins, a former Huckabee campaign adviser, that the mysteriously floating cross that had appeared in Huckabee’s Iowa campaign commercials was, in fact, done on purpose. Of course, back in December when the ad ran, Huckabee and his aides denied at the time that anything was purposely done to illuminate the cross.

EJDolbow on May 21, 2008 at 12:05 AM

Your link also says

Novak relayed a recent conversation he’d had with a “creditable” religious-right type who’d claimed to have first-hand knowledge that Huckabee bought into the idea that Obama as president might be what Americans deserved.

We’ve covered that ground before:

I was very disturbed by a column by Robert Novak that quoted some “anonymous source” in saying that while I strongly supported Senator McCain, I thought that maybe America “deserves Obama,” as if to say that I secretly hoped he won.

Where do people dream up this stuff? Forget the “anonymous” sources—there’s nothing anonymous about my stand and here it is. We don’t “deserve” Obama—we DESERVE a President with the character, convictions, experience, and wisdom to see the problems we face and try to lead us to solve them. We deserve a President who truly loves this country and from whom there is no doubt as to his respect for Faith, Family, and the kind of Freedom that those before us have given their lives to pass on to us. John McCain meets that criteria and that’s why I am campaigning for him and not hoping for Obama. The nonsense that I want Obama to win this year so I can run in 2012 is absurd. I love my country more than my own ambition. So let the record and truth be clear. And let the “anonymous” sources either show the courage to stand up and be accountable for their comments or shut up and leave commentary to people who aren’t afraid of their own shadow.

-Mike Huckabee

Now for the Rollins thing…

Earlier this week I told you about the really outrageous column by Bob Novak and his “anonymous” source. Now another “big one” hits the world of really off base and fabricated farce. If you’ve seen a blog post and subsequent news stories alleging that our campaign chair Ed Rollins “admitted” that our Christmas ad aired in Iowa that got so much attention because I actually said “birth of Jesus” was a contrived scheme and that the infamous “floating cross” was in fact intentional, then let’s set the record straight.

Ed simply didn’t say that. Watch the interview he did with City Talk and see for yourself. It’s about 28 minutes long and it’s wonderful. Too bad the people spreading yet more fabrications have time to make up stories, but don’t have time to actually watch the interview for themselves. It’s of course easier to repeat something that sounds “juicy” than to actually go to the source and see if it’s true. Not only did Ed not say that, but the spot was filmed in late November and Ed didn’t join our team until December. The whole “floating cross” conspiracy has been especially amusing to the production crew at Dempsey Films in Little Rock (who are not political and who set up the shot) and equally as perplexing to the kind Little Rock family who allowed us to use their home that day for filming and who never realized that their family’s Christmas decorations in their den and the bookshelf that has been in their house for years was really a subliminal religious “Bat-signal” to the insiders (like the one used to summon Batman).

I hope you’ll take the time to actually watch Ed’s interview. What a wonderful affirmation of what the campaign was really about as well as great insights from Ed Rollins, who I came to truly love and adore both professionally and personally and count as a trusted and dear friend.

In the meantime, last night was a reminder of what a tough year this will be for Republicans. The loss of the Congressional seat in Mississippi was tough. We had a great candidate, but the Democrat very effectively ran as a pro life, pro 2nd amendment conservative. I’m convinced that for the GOP to have wins this year we have to focus on specific issues and not party building (for us) or party bashing (against them).

I really do love hearing from you guys and hope that we can use the forum here to create some ongoing “community forums,” a kind of electronic town hall in which we’ll raise a topic and ask you to opine and hopefully to make a case for your point of view. I think it will be insightful and fun.

Keep the Faith!

From the road,
-Mike Huckabee

How many candidates are possibly going to run this fall?

1) Obama (D)
2) McCain (R)
3) Paul (I)
4) Nader (G)
5) Clinton (I)
6) Keyes (I)
7) Baldwin (C)

Hmmm….

Just seems this election season, that Huck’s main base…Bible-belt Evangelicals…aren’t the power-players they were in recent elections.

JetBoy on May 21, 2008 at 12:17 AM

The irony of that is they neutralized themselves by supporting Huckabee who was running interference for McCain.

Evangelicals are the reason McCain is the nominee.

That’s exactly what the Communists want to be true, but it’s not true.

Clinton does not belong on this list and I suspect you know that. Paul will not run as an Independent because he does not want to be POTUS, he never has. He is the quintessential “message candidate”

The rest will account for 3 or 4% of the vote.

If evangelicals are powerful why did their candidate lose so badly?

We’ve already covered this ground. It was Fred who was running interference for McCain.

As a former FredHead… I now believe that he was Johnny’s stalking horse.

As much as it pains me, I second that.

You need to change your name to Red Herring.

Your argument is that Huckabee did not lie or Rollins did not lie because Huckabee told you so?

EJDolbow on May 21, 2008 at 12:26 AM

Honestly…who’s going to remember anything four years from now? I can’t believe that’s his motive. Huck’s up to something…with the whole Evangelical thing. Every other GOP candidate has endorsed McCain (sans Ron Paul of course) and is helping with the campaign.

JetBoy on May 21, 2008 at 12:09 AM

I’m not in Huck’s head, so I can’t say for sure.

But, IF he thought McCain would win, he’d be out there working harder for McCain and not chasing cameras, because the next administration would be a springboard for next nominee.

I don’t think he thinks McCain will win, and I think he thinks automatically his name will jump to peoples’ mind. If McCain doesn’t win, he doesn’t need them to remember him in 4 years, he needs them to remember him the day after the election, when R voters say, “Damn, well in 4 years with _____, maybe we’ll get the WH back”. The more he can keep his image out there, the more likely people put his name in that blank.

Then when the next election rolls around he is already in the pole position in voters minds.

The other possibility I see is that he might be thinking about creating a 3rd party (post-election) based on evangelical voters. Use the Purpose-Driven guy & his network + his own. Claim the R party is finished and his is the new way.

Eh, I don’t know.

Mike Huckabee lost the primary.

P.S. Mike Huckabee lost the primary.

EJDolbow on May 21, 2008 at 12:25 AM

Mormons/LDS and Evangelicals normally vote very similarly. That voting block was split three ways by Huckabee, Romney, and Thompson.

Thompson kept Romney from beating McCain in some states, and kept Huckabee from beating McCain in some other states (like SC, which McCain lost to Bush in 2000). So, it appears that Fred’s late entry and early exit lasted just long enough to “ensure” McCain the nomination.

Red Pill on May 21, 2008 at 12:30 AM

Evangelicals are the reason McCain is the nominee.

EJDolbow on May 21, 2008 at 12:21 AM

Arguable…but you might be right.

That’s exactly what the Communists want to be true, but it’s not true.

Red Pill on May 21, 2008 at 12:23 AM

Honestly, I don’t give a darn what the communists think. They’re irrelevant. Huckabee gave it a shot, and it didn’t pan out. Why can’t he just bow out gracefully?
