Open thread: Kentucky and Oregon; Update: Hillary wins Kentucky; Update: Obama wins Oregon

posted at 6:00 pm on May 20, 2008 by Allahpundit

Are conclusions this foregone liveblogworthy? No. Threadworthy? Sure! There’s bound to be something tasty in the exit polls, and think what fun we’ll have dissecting the media’s angst if Her Majesty manages to hang another 40-point blowout around the presumptive nominee’s neck. He’s going to clinch a majority of pledged delegates too, which adds some intrigue to their victory speeches later on. Will Hillary hint that the end is near? Or will she continue to rock on, perhaps punctuating her defiant address with a sassy, “See you in Puerto Rico, sucka”?

Back soon with data. While you wait, enjoy incompetent former Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle rubbing salt in the wounds she inflicted on Hillary; dissension in the ranks between Hillary aides who think it’s time to defect to Obama and diehards who have imbibed the proverbial Kool-Aid; and Richard Cohen with an uncharacteristically trenchant piece on why Hillary fights on. It’s all about the grittiness — in which case, er, what’s with the sudden whining about sexism?

Update: See what I mean?

According to CBS News early exit polling, in Kentucky, eight in ten Clinton voters said they would be dissatisfied if Obama was the Democratic nominee. Obama voters were about evenly split on whether they would be satisfied if Clinton got the nomination.

In Kentucky, just 33 percent of Clinton voters said they would back Obama in the general election if he is the Democratic nominee – 41 percent said they will vote for McCain, and another 23 percent say they won’t vote.

Update: The evening’s first foregone conclusion is in the books as the nets call Kentucky for Hillary. Here’s the full exit poll; based on the gender breakdown, she’s looking at roughly a 66/34 win with a 40-point spread among women. Interesting tidbit: Of the 42% of Democrats who say Obama shouldn’t pick Hillary as VP, fully half of them voted today for Hillary. I’m not sure how to interpret that. This is fun, too:

cnn.jpg

Racial polarization? Obama wins blacks 88/7, Hillary wins whites 72/22, with 21% of voters saying race was important (among whites who said so, Hillary won 86%). To put that in perspective for you, it’s a bigger margin among whites than she had in Mississippi. I wonder if this has anything to do with that:

cnn002.jpg

Update: Here are the exits for Oregon. Gender breakdown says Obama should win by 10 points or so. Obama wins across almost all demographics, including white Democrats (whites made up 85% of all voters) and loses among white women by a single point. Only 12% say they’ll vote for McCain over Obama and only 10% say race was important to them — and of those, 51% voted for Obama.

Blowback

With 29% in Obama is winning Oregon 60% to 40%.

Kentucky is done with the vote tally and Clinton won 65% to 30%.

malan89 on May 20, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Hmmm. 28% of precincts reporting and I’m only about .5% off.

John McCain should promise the Huckster Secretary of Agriculture tell the Huckster to stick it where the sun don’t shine and stop all speculation of this tool getting the nod for VP.

There, fixed that.

Just think, the price of oil has doubled since the Democrats took Congress and gas has gone from $2.25 a gallon to almost $4 a gallon. Just think what they can do when they have complete control of the government.

I really don’t like the politicizing of gas prices. Sure, gas taxes, excessive regulation, and the lack of drilling of our own oil have an impact; but the real reason behind the exorbitant gas prices we enjoy today is a rapid rise in world consumption that is catching up to us. China’s passenger car sales rose 23% last year, and will rise another 16-20% this year. India is on the same track. As much as we’d like to blame these problems on the Dems (and they do have a minor impact, as offshore drilling in certain spots and drilling in ANWR would help a little), the real issue is much bigger.

malan89 on May 20, 2008 at 11:29 PM

I do watch some stuff. I like History Channel sometimes and some sports.

I watched an old fight last night from 1966.Joe Frazier vs Oscar Bonaveno {I think I spelled that right}. Oscar was murdered at the age of 34 at the Mustang Ranch in Reno, NV. Very suspicious circumstances.

Frazier won that fight on a decision, but I think Oscar won myself. And Frazier kept hitting him below the belt.

So sometimes TV is ok. It is good for violence anyway.

Huckabee is a serious liability and McCain and his handlers know it. While Huckabee has been on his very best behavior he has had to issue more apologies than all other candidates combined.

McCain can’t afford to have somebody so undisciplined and unreliable representing him while he is trying to close the deal with the majority of voters.

To be truthful I agree. I did read something about the possibility that there might have been some hanky panky going on with institutional investors speculating on futures prices…but that is because they are looking at trends. And no one really knows what to expect. I saw a blurb on this at Bloombergs and some people said prices would just keep going up and someone else said the economy would implode and stop the rise.

But it really is a big increase in demand. I heard that expectations are that demand from Asia will increase to 110 million barrels a day from just over 7 millions a day now.

She just may. She will certainly win the night.

She really does have a very good point about winning the popular vote. Of all the Democrat votes cast in this primary she has the most.
How is the Democrat party going to explain appointing Barack the nominee while the voters picked Hillary?

In my little corner of Oregon the Obama worship is unbearable. I’m really surprised he’s not whuppin’ her by a bigger margin here.

O/T but I have to ask: Why did Ron Paul start running frequent radio spots here? They’ve been on during Rush/Lars/Savage for the last several weeks. What’s he up to? (Hopefully just burning off the last of his millions of fiat-money donations, but I dunno)

I’ve an idea for a flash cartoon series that features obambi and ahmadumjihadi in ‘direct negotiations’ on a range of subjects. Just think of how much fun could be poked at both of them and still get across the message just how futile and absurd such negotiations would really be.

Just an idea, at this point. No real meat on the bones yet.

JiangxiDad on May 21, 2008 at 8:47 AM

All those that think this is about “we the people” are out of their minds. This is about power for the nominee and perks and favors in the form of Supreme Court nominations, ambassadorships, cabinet appointment, etc., etc., etc., for the nominee’s flunkies, followers and financiers. The only thing the “people” get to decide is who dispenses all these favors. In summary, the entire political process in this country is phony money and power grab played at the expense of the mindless masses.

Also, as soon as MM’s site was mentioned I remembered that I had seen your poster there, and I now think it was that excellent design that popped into my head when I heard the hopeiate term yesterday. So I can’t at all claim credit for either the vision or the term that sparked it.

Great work on your part, though.

I was just going thru the footage I captured last night of obambi’s speech and there’s so much info-clutter on the screen that it’s difficult to get a good grab. And the fact that the footage was shot at night also poses challenges.

I apologize if this is a repeat of a repeat but Hilly has to know (deep down) that Operation Chaos is alive and well and not all of those votes would be cast for her in the general election. Or do the ‘hard-working white folks in Kentucky who didn’t go to college’ not listen to Rush? Of course not, they’re Democrats!
I’m not a Rush fan but he done good on this.

SEVEN MISTAKES OF THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN IN KENTUCKY

1. “Daisy Mae Don’t Live Here No More”: Using the Lil’ Abner cartoons as a guidebook understanding the Kentucky population. For that matter, using the accumulated Hollywood and media stereotypes of Kentuckians, Appalachians, mountain folks etc. was quite foolish. Kentuckians took Obama’s remarks and the Media’s slurs as mortal insults. They won’t forgive or forget them
2. Assuming they were dealing with an homogeneous culture
Ignorance of what every Kentucky politician must know to survive: Kentucky has very distinct
cultures and regions. Each region often acts as a state within the state, and meets any attempts to
approach them as a homogeneous population with frozen rejection. .

Northern Kentucky is a German-Catholic suburb of Cincinnati with a significant Japanese community; Lexington, Louisville( and their surrounding metropolitan extensions) are very southern in the sense of Atlanta or Charleston, SC–a very British-American ethnic group. However, Lexington also has a very large Irish and Hispanic-Catholic population, as well as a large Jewish population, an influential Japanese community, and an international academic community; Eastern Kentucky has a knee-jerk pride in being Appalachian[heaven help the idiot that offends it] ; and Western Kentucky shares Nashville’s culture and business circles.

3. Assuming that a predominantly religious culture was politically gullible. They paid too much attention to the left-wing propaganda mills which spins religious people as uneducated, stupid bumpkins.
4. This has been a hunting state since its inception. In the rural areas, people actually supplement their food budget by hunting game animals. Do not refer to an over two-century old tradition as an emotional pacifier.
5. Ignorance of the Kentucky Code. They do not forget or forgive anyone offending their “honor”. An old fashioned term— meaning to question their integrity.
6. Poor Historical Understanding: Although, Kentucky had slaves, it was not a “slave state”. The Civil War spilt families, communities and cities wide apart. Most of the regions never even had slaves and many were big participants in the Underground Railroad. Kentucky never joined the Confederacy.
7. What Kentuckians still remember are northern and east-coast vultures of the post-civil war era; attracted by the states post-war economic collapse; that treated the entire population like an occupied, conquered territory. They either swindled or pressured thousands of families to sell them their farms and mineral rights for pennies and built huge fortunes. What followed was the “raping” of Kentucky’s natural resources by the horse industry, timber, natural gas and coal companies; whose owners lived out-of-state and took their profits out-of-state. The “new elites” gave political donations and lobbied to buy-off democratic politicians, who gave them a tax-free status for more than a century [the corruption of the controlling Democratic Party is still legendary]. For decades, Kentuckians were frustrated by watching the wealth of their state carted off to the corporations in the north and east coast. In essence, Kentucky was treated like a third-world country by other states for over a century. By the time, Kentuckians re-gained control of their own state government and could raise capital; much of the state’s resources had been harvested by outsiders. In the process, this form of industrialization destroyed the resources which had allowed the Eastern Kentuckians, in particular, an unmatched level of independence.

Examples, of how these proud people have been degraded include a Broadway play, the Kentucky Cycle, written by a gentleman who never bothered to visit the state, and whose derogatory portrait has been debunked by every major American historian to date. Yet, it is considered fair game to aim the worst offensive, “racist-like” regional slurs against these people. Their silent fury has been building for generations. The Media triggered an eruption of accumulated resentment when they conducted themselves like a 21st century “Bwanna” swaggering in to civilize the savages. I doubt Obama will ever be able to gain their trust.

Forgive me, but I’d like to re-post a satirical poem on
left-wing’s adaptation of 19th-century “colonialism”.

With apologies to Rudyard Kipling the poet; here is my reworded version of his famous poem “the White Man’s Burden*; which praised the “benefits” of being instructed by “enlightened Europeans” to all the conquered peoples of the world. An obnoxious message now reborn.

Today, the new “Sahib” or “Bwanna” is our left-wing media and their cronies out to correct(deconstruct)those vulgar Appalachian savages from their “unenlightened” worldview:

The Left Wing’s Burden

Take up the Left wing’s burden
Send forth the same old breed –
Go bind your journalists to brief exile
To serve your hillbillies’ need;
To wait away from starbucks
On fluttered folk and wild –
Your captive, sullen peoples,
Half devil and half child.

Take up the Left-Wing’s burden –
In condescension to abide,
To veil the threat of exposure
And hide evidence of pride;
By duplicitous speech and lies,
An hundred times mad plain.
To take another’s profit,
And steal another’s gain.

Take up the Left-wing’s burden –
Our savage campaigns for “peace”
Shut down those coarse distractions
And bid “bitter” ignorance cease;
And when your goal is nearest
The presidency for others sought,
Watch guns and Small-town Folly
Bring all your hope to nought
.

Take up the Left wing’s burden –
And reap an entitled reward:
The blame of those ye enlighten,
The hate of those you deconstruct
The vulgar cry of the working class ye condescend
(Ah, slowly!) toward the light: –
“Why brought ye us from bondage,
“Our loved Appalachian night?”

Take up the Left-wings burden –
Ye distort what Obama meant –
Nor call too loud on freedom
To cloak your true intent;
By all ye preach or publish,
By all ye leave or do,
The silent, sullen peoples
Shall weigh your party and you.
