Now campaign statements are off the table, too?

The whininess quotient of the Barack Obama campaign increased this morning with an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America. In an interview with Robin Roberts, Obama complained about criticism of his wife in a Republican political ad, proclaiming it “unacceptable” and “low class”. Obama, however, failed to explain why statements made in political speeches at campaign events should be off-limits to criticism:
In a preview of what the couple may face in the fall, the Tennessee Republican Party unveiled a four-minute online video Thursday, coinciding with Michelle Obama’s visit to the state for a Democratic Party event. The ad mocked her “proud” remarks from earlier in the year.
The video featured Tennesseans saying why they were proud of America, while repeatedly cutting to Michelle Obama’s comments that she was proud of America “for the first time in my adult life.”
For Barack Obama, the advertisements went too far.
“If they think that they’re going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful, because that I find unacceptable — the notion that you start attacking my wife or my family,” he said.
“For them to try to distort or to play snippets of her remarks in ways that are unflattering to her I think is just low class and I think they — most of the American people would think that as well,” he said. “I would never think of going after somebody’s spouse in a campaign.”
The ad featured a number of Tennessee voters talking about the pride they took in their country interspersed with Michelle Obama’s statement that her husband’s campaign made her proud of her country for the first time in her adult life. She made this statement at an Obama campaign rally in Madison, Wisconsin. This was part of Obama’s public campaign to win votes, and it was an appeal for votes specifically on the basis of her sense of disappointment and frustration with America until that point in time:
“What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback. And let me tell you something — for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I’ve seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it’s made me proud.”
If Obama doesn’t want his wife to receive criticism, then he shouldn’t use her as a surrogate on the campaign trail. Whatever she says on the stump at campaign events is fair game for criticism, just as it has been with Bill Clinton. Obama’s camp has unloaded on the former President for statements he made about Hillary’s loss in South Carolina and several other incidents in which they believe Bill played the race card to explain Obama’s success. Bill’s not running for anything this year, but he has made himself a public figure in this primary race, and his statements are also legitimate targets for attack.
The whininess factor has become a real problem for Obama. Presumably, we’d like a President who doesn’t play a perpetual victim on the national stage. What happens when he has to tangle with Congress over policy, or more to the point, when he has to represent America on the world stage? If he can’t deal with legitimate political criticism now, what will we get for a response when Obama runs the federal government?
Toughen up, buttercup, and stop whining about criticism of speeches at political events. If you can’t handle that much, you have no business running for re-election to your current job, let alone for the presidency.

It’s an easy avenue for Obama to look tough but doesn’t require much in the way of actual fortitude. While it’s something that doesn’t stand even five minutes of scrutiny, it’s not like any of his base are going to bother. If they were inclined to spend five minutes scrutinizing him, they probably wouldn’t be in his congregation to begin with.

And Hillary whines that she isn’t getting fair treatment by the media. And McCain whines that people who disagree with him are out of touch with reality.
They are all whiners and, in their own eyes, above criticism.

Let’s make a list of what Obama has proclaimed as “off the table”:
1. His wife and anything she says.
2. His admitting that he would negotiate with Iran with no preconditions.
3. Hamas’ approval of him
4. His middle name and the fact that he went to a madrassa when he was in Kenya
5. His reverend and his bigoted church
6. His domestic policies
7. His foreign policies
8. His suggestion of instant unconditional withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
9. His inexperience.

Obama is a prime example of the net results coming from the feminization of the American man…
Every time Michelle gives a speech, she represents her husbands message; this makes her words fair game, as it should be.

The point you make about Obama going after Clinton is insightful, Ed. I think it may further expose some sexism on Obama’s part. When he says “spouse”, I bet he was thinking only of women.

Obama’s taking America’s sensitivity to racial issues and trying to expand in into a “No Fly Zone” for Republicans and the media on anything questionable he says or does. I don’t think it’s done much damage yet, but keep this up through November, and there’s a real possibility voters will experience “race card burnout”, in which they get tired of both the candidate declaring everything off-limits on racial and other grounds and worry about the prospect of going through four years of this, where anyone questioning the president’s words or deeds would have to then defend their racial tolerence.

At some point, do ANY of the networks (FOX excluded), ever get shamed into actually calling Buttercup on his incessant whining? Apparently, the only things you are allowed to say about Obama is that he is good looking and speaks well. But of course, you better be careful to say “he speaks well” because we all know that is racist speech. Actually, I think he READS well off of teleprompters… because when he actually has to come up with things on his own, his campaign ends up spending the next week telling us what he really meant to say and how racist we are for holding his words against him.
Hope and Change, man. Hope and Change.

This is so typical for Barry’s campaign.
1. Open mouth
2. Express true feelings
3. Insert foot
4. Come out with a statement to tell the “riff raff” what you meant (aka what will keep the rubes silent)
Exit thought: I was shocked that he didn’t pull out the race card during the interview. I guess that will be left to surrogate groups (MoveOn, People for the American Way, etc).

Yes.
10. Anything and everything not listed in the first nine examples.
Obama never thought he would get this far in the process, he believed that he was just priming himself for the 2012 ticket, perhaps score a VP slot with Edwards or something. Then a funny thing (well not so funny); Hillary got trounced in the primaries and suddenly he was on the front page.
He still has the Chicago-style politico in him, telling people to shut their yaps or face the ‘machine’. Whatever Obie, this is the big leagues, get used to it or get out.

Precisely. In fact, I think he jumped the shark with this one.
You’re right. His “whininess” is starting to define him. Such awkward defensiveness about his wife suggests to me that he knows he’s vulnerable here. So I say, let’s apply more scrutiny, not less. With what we know about them, who knows what might pop up next.

It’s becoming clear that there’s nothing they do or say that Barack and Michelle Obama will take responsibility for.
So let’s get this straight: Michelle Obama is free to criticize America, and all of us. But it’s just not fair for us to criticize her in return for doing so, or for anything else.
Very sick of this already, and it’s only May.
Gilda on May 19, 2008 at 9:40 AM
Michelle Obama is even more a detriment to the Messiah’s campaign than Teres-ahh Heinz Kerry was to John’s. She is Obama’s vituperaptive mouthpiece asying things Obama won’t dare to say, telling Americans how “mean” we are. This woman obviously sucked up and breathes and speaks all of the Rev. Wrights anti-American hatred. Twenty years is a long time to marinate in that nastiness, and, whether Obamababy likes it or not, it shows and we have every right to comment and use what she says in this campaign. Who wants such a harpy as First Lady???
marybel on May 19, 2008 at 9:40 AM
This, or something along these lines, would explain his touchiness. He jumped the shark here with his hyper-defensiveness, and I’m certain the reason behind it is a perception of vulnerability.

Elite liberals, especially minorities, have benefited from political correctness gone mad, and are unaccustomed to any criticism. No one ever had the nerve to criticize them in the spheres they inhabit. I suppose it is a shock to them to discover that there is an opposition that is not guilty.

I don’t want to go too far to the extreme. I expect an Obama presidency would be horribly destructive but not the end of the world.
However, this is a very interesting point. Barack Obama and the Democratic Party have already handed a huge amount of power to the odious Jeremiah Wright and I do not expect his silence until November to come cheap.
Wright could tank the whole Obama campaign with the release of statements, a book or videos, indicating Barack Obama’s agreement with his most inflammatory ideologies.
William Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Tony Rezko and other sleazy criminal actors have also been given some serious levers of power. If Obama takes office he might be the most corrupted and beholden president in modern history.

The Obama campaign seems to think that Michelle can step in and out of the ring with impunity. She reminds me of a little chihauhau, (and I Know I’m insulting chihauhau owners everywhere),…sneaking out from behind its master and nipping at someone’s heals. When that someone turns to confront it, the sneaky little yapping rat runs and hides behind its master, using him to deflect any attacks and crying over being the injured party. And the observers (MSM) all agree that the chihauhau was the one abused. Ya gotta love Obama campaign. They’ve got more cajones than the Clinton’s. That’s why they’re winning.

So, one can use the words of a male spouse in a campaign statement, but not Michello’s words? There seems to be another onerous pattern forming…
The NYT, from today:
Some even accuse Mr. Obama of chauvinism, pointing to the time he called Mrs. Clinton “likeable enough” as evidence of dismissiveness. Nancy Wait, 55, a social worker in Columbia City, Ind., said Mr. Obama was far less qualified than Mrs. Clinton and described as condescending his recent assurances that Mrs. Clinton should stay in the race as long as she liked. Ms. Wait said she would “absolutely, positively not” vote for him come fall.
Ms. Ferraro, who clashed with the Obama campaign about whether she made a racially offensive remark, said she might not either. “I think Obama was terribly sexist,” she said.
Shivas Irons on May 19, 2008 at 10:19 AM

Yet the dems had no problem going after McCain’s wife in the last week or so, but no comment from Beebop.
Also Iraq, Taxes, Voting records, friends, family, personal beliefs, ideas for the future and how one will run the country are also off the table.
All we may talk about are hope and change….oh yeah and how McCain is a big poopoo head war mongerer who tried to marry Bush and wants to be like him when he grows up and is lying to us all, thats ok.

This little tyrade has caused the Michelle Obama entry at http://www.countryaboveself.com to jump quite nicely. People are condemning both here and Barry H.
Michelle Malkin has done nicely since here nomination too.

Obama needs to grow up. All this talk about “detestable” remarks makes him look like a drama queen. Especially when the remarks are anything but.
“Methinks the lady doth protest too much.”
