Muslim school officials attack news crew in Twin Cities

I’ve followed the story about the Tarik ibn Zayad Academy and allegations that it abuses its status as a state-funded charter school to teach Islam instead of a public-school curriculum for the last six weeks. Katherine Kersten first brought the story to our attention, for which local journalists have begun petitioning the Star Tribune to fire her. The state department of education found several potential issues for violation of laws intending to keep public schools from providing religious instruction, and notified the school today that it had to make changes to its Friday prayer efforts and the lack of transportation service for students who opt out of prayers, among other issues.
Local ABC affiliate KSTP has also continued to update the reporting on this story. Today they went to the school to determine how TiZA would respond to the state’s demand for corrective action. Instead, they found themselves at the center of the story as two TiZA officials attacked the news crew and stole their camera:
In an attempt to report about the new findings from the Department of Education, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS went to TiZA. While on school grounds, our crew was attacked by school officials. The two men were able to grab our camera and kept it until police arrived.
Our photographer was treated by paramedics after suffering minor injuries. …
Tarik ibn Zayad Academy, which focuses on Middle Eastern culture and shares a mosque with the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, came under fire after a teacher alleged that the school was offering religious instruction in Islam to its students.
KSTP has a video report on their website. The tape starts off pleasantly, as the children run up to the camera to smile and wave, just like children anywhere would do. One man walks rapidly towards the camera and grabs it, while another unseen man assaults the cameraman. Later, the police would retrieve the camera, and the video shows the police cars responding to the emergency call from the news crew.
The action by the MnDoE should make clear that Kersten had the story essentially right. Local journalists attempting to intimidate her and the Strib — which has thus far refused to submit to this bullying — have some explaining to do. If she had written a story about a charter school illegally giving instructions in the Catholic or Mormon faith, these same journalists would have nominated her for an award.
Next, the MnDoE should seriously reconsider this school’s accreditation in light of the attack on KSTP’s news crew. If nothing else, it calls into question whether the administrators should have children in their care at a state-funded charter school, given their temperament. They conducted this assault in full view of the students. If TiZA continues to employ these two men, the state should pull all funding from the academy.
Update: Michelle’s been following this story as well.

Islam is fundamentally incompatible with a free society. These are the so-called moderate Muslims I keep hearing about and this was supposed to be the model for other schools. Continuing to lie to ourselves about this ideology is akin to promoting the destruction of our society.

How about someone open a competing charter school, say a Christian one, across the street.
They could call it “Crusaders Academy”…

I’ve heard Michael Savage surmise we’ll have to outlaw islam. He’s usually at least 20 years ahead on these kinds of issues.
SouthernGent on May 19, 2008 at 9:28 PM
One aspect of this that I find shocking is that the reporters and apparently school officials are surprised by the turn of events at the school. It is as if they have no understanding whatsoever regarding the teachings of Islam. If they had spent even an afternoon studying the core precepts of Koran then this development would have been foreseeable.
It’s not like Muslims are hiding the doctrine or pretending that Islam can peacefully coexist with American freedom. That is why we see frequent Islamic protesters with signs that say “Freedom can go to hell!” The very fact that the school is centered on studying a foreign region and unabashedly promotes Islamic requirements is revealing.
Because of this focus they have rejected American values and we are fostering the development of a wholly alien population that has no shared values, beliefs and has no respect for American tradition and law.

They aren’t just learning to use our freedoms it is part of the strategy. CAIR and organizations like it are the manifestation of that strategy and the TIZ Academny is the realization of a specific ideological goal. The problem is that too many people regard Islam as just another religion. A person that is a member of a group that has as its goal the subjugation of all Americans and the destruction of all other religions would be called either a nut or a Muslim.

The Minnesota State Dept. of Ed. report says that the students and their teachers engaging in Muslim prayers during the school day “may” violate statutes about the separation of church and state in a taxpayer-funded school. Gee, do ya think? Geniuses, those education professionals. Next they’ll issue a report stating that smacking a news reporter around and stealing his camera “may” violate the 1st Amendment to the Constitution. You know, “may,” as in maybe, but we’re not real sure. We just don’t know. We’ve got to investigate some more cuz it’s just so darn complicated. Good grief. And by all means, kill the messengers of this story (i.e., fire the columnist who broke the story), but don’t talk about the issue itself — a tax-funded Madrassa operating in a Midwestern city in the United States of America is 2008. No, don’t talk about that at all, just get rid of the people who want to talk about it. Useful idiots, indeed. Sometimes I get so pissed off when I think that all these despicable appeasers will be long dead when history takes the hard look at them and judges them as the tools for evil that they are.

I frankly can’t believe this school got chartered to begin with. The point about “Crusader Academy” is well placed. I doubt seriously that another one like it will get chartered anytime soon. Minnesota has a relatively large population of immigrant Somalis (but still a very small percentage in terms of overall population), but we haven’t exactly enacted Sharia law just yet. This school was just ordered to make some adjustments with regard to prayer sessions.
When the Somali airport cab drivers (most of the cab drivers in Minneapolis are Somali) wanted special concessions to refuse carrying passengers with booze or seeing-eye dogs, they got shot down thanks in part to public opposition. Yes- they got their footbaths… big f’ing deal; footbaths don’t hurt me none.
Like any urban area we have our share of the mulitculturist crowd, but don’t expect Minnesota to turn into Minnesotistan anytime soon.

Keep in mind the liberalism run amok in Minnesota so hoping that the state DoE withdraw the school’s charter is a waste of time unless the national media picks up on this and I’m not holding my breath. The ACLU staying away from this clearly shows their double-standard since they vehemently oppose similar actions by charter schools that even remotely give the apppearance of Christian influences.

I think moderate Islam is an oxymoron. I’m not clear how you can have an ideology founded on supremacy and forced conversion approached in a moderate way. Is that when they only threaten to cut some people’s heads off. Or perhaps the jizya is less in moderate Islam.
I think this little experiment and those trifles they are experiencing in Europe and in the Middle East have put that notion to rest.

Georgia has a relatively large muslim population, best estimates that I have seen are about 0.3 – 0.4%. Dhimmitude is not a muslim problem, it is an American problem. Look at where the worst cases of conceding to muslim pressures are occurring and you see states whose populations are generally very liberal and pc driven. I have a sister-in-law who teaches elementary school in Dearborn, MI. Libs because they want to feel good about themselves and lutherans because they think they won’t get into heaven if they don’t.
Minnesota also has the nations largest population (or second largest) of Somali immigrants which make for interesting times when you visit the Mall of America….because we also have the nation’s largest population of Hmong immigrants.
