Ingraham to MKH: McCain shouldn’t have appeared on SNL

posted at 9:36 pm on May 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

Because, she says, it’s beneath the dignity of the office to which he aspires. This was one of the arguments from righties during the outcry over the YouTube debate, if I’m not mistaken, that Reagan wouldn’t even take his jacket off inside the Oval Office let alone gab with a talking snowman. Alas: Times change. The real lament shouldn’t be that McCain would stoop to a cameo on a dopey comedy show (he ain’t the first Republican candidate to do that, needless to say), it’s that his refusal to do so for the reason Ingraham gives would probably alienate more voters than it would attract in making him look humorless. And is this really that lamentable? What’s wrong with SNL? Reagan’s sense of humor was one of his most winning qualities and an absolute political asset. If McCain uses his in the context of sketch comedy instead of, say, at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, what’s the damage? What makes this so unrespectable, in other words?

Exit quotation: “Humphrey later said that not doing it may have cost him the election.”

I hate to be too tacky or anything, but Ingraham is not exactly high class all the time herself.

Besides, I liked Reagan but the man made at least one movie with a monkey. He was not God, he did not pretend to be.

Terrye on May 19, 2008 at 9:40 PM

Everyone has to have an opinion about everything, well-founded or not. It’s the well-founded stuff in blogs like this one and only some TV programs that distinguish.

Vizzini on May 19, 2008 at 9:41 PM

She wants to criticize him. If they had asked, and he’d refused, she would have said “Look! He doesn’t even want to win.”

Self-marginalization is sad.

How’s that “butt monkey” thing going Laura?

mred on May 19, 2008 at 9:43 PM

I love Laura. She’s a straight talker with sound conservative principles. But sometimes I think she needs to lighten up a bit. Times have changed and much of our dopey public likes SNL and probably thinks its cool that McCain made an appearance. We need as many votes as we can get, I’ve got no problem with his cameo.

cannonball on May 19, 2008 at 9:44 PM

My husband and I watched the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this year and loved it…..we laughed until we cried at Bush’s performance and the Scottsman/new US citizen.

Was Ingraham one of the folks who criticized Laura Bush for making jokes one year at the Dinner? Nobody likes a humorless scold.

funky chicken on May 19, 2008 at 9:44 PM

I thought McCain was great on SNL. One of the best things Obama has going for him is his appearance as a charasmatic, likeable guy. Shows like these, especially when McCain performs well, do a lot to blunt that advantage.

BadgerHawk on May 19, 2008 at 9:45 PM

There’s nothing wrong with SNL, but what was the rest of the show’s content that night? I don’t watch it anymore, but back when i did some of the sketches were pretty raunchy. I’d prefer not to be viewing and see this cute McCain bit bookended by that kind of thing. You know, like that DiNiro thing where he was supposed to be a state dept. rep. or something and had to pronounce all those arab names? Pretty funny, but wow, lol.

I pretty much agree with her.

Because, she says, it’s beneath the dignity of the office to which he aspires. This was one of the arguments from righties during the outcry over the YouTube debate

A debate is one thing…appearing on a popular comedy show in a cameo is another. In a debate, we’re trying to get answers to serious and pertinent issues. An SNL appearance is just having a little fun.

And too true…Nixon’s appearance on Laugh In is said to have won him the White House.

JetBoy on May 19, 2008 at 9:49 PM

I hate to be too tacky or anything, but Ingraham is not exactly high class all the time herself.

You aren’t being tacky. You are making a point that is irrelevant to what Laura’s point is with that statement.

What does Laura’s show, or the contents therein have to do with appearing on SNL being below the dignity of the office of the President of the U.S.?

cannonball on May 19, 2008 at 10:04 PM

I don’t know if McCain wants to be on that show. But the same kind of idiots who care about flag pins care about whether or not the candidate is down with the regular folk. There’s nothing wrong with him going on the show per se. But developing a culture where not going is a disqualifier is problematic.

freevillage on May 19, 2008 at 10:16 PM

I have no problems with presidential candidates appearing on comedy shows. The only thing is that they appear on these shows and to keep their serious political persona they don’t do anything overtly silly. However, the skits end up coming out dry and not all that funny.

Opinions are like belly-buttons, everybody’s got one. I listen to and like Laura and it’s okay for her to be basically wrong on this one. It was a funny skit and it was refreshing to discover McCain’s comedic gift for deadpan. Why not use it? Since the whining, consummate victim Obama takes himself so seriously, the contrast serves McCain well. It was a savvy political move.

I’m proud to live a country that is casual and laid back enough to feature “serious political figures” on its comedy shows.

In the classical Greek periodeven the most stoic and serious of citizens would attend the plays of the time, some of them rather bawdy comedies. Perikles, Cleon, etc. were even openly mocked at plays they personally attended, floppy stage phalluses. Laura’s nostalgia is based on old traditions, but they don’t reflect the world we live in now, a media culture. Its clear to me that these appearances are healthy, not hurtful.

hmmm at least big mac didn’t dress in drag, like one of our other presidential candidates…

Tacitus on May 19, 2008 at 11:11 PM

As a Republican candidate for the House in 1994, he rose to national attention when reports alleged that he had licked whipped cream off the breasts of two women at a charity event.

As a congressman from Georgia, the thrice-married Barr returned attention to the whipped-cream episode when, speaking in support of the Defense of Marriage Act, he argued that “the flames of self-centered morality are licking at the very foundations of our society.”

As one of the managers of Bill Clinton’s impeachment, Barr gained enough prominence to attempt a run for the Senate in 2002. But that effort fell apart at about the time Barr accidentally fired a .38-caliber pistol through a glass door at a fundraising reception. ….

He listed his grievances: government eavesdropping, suspending habeas corpus, runaway spending. Americans “deserve better,” he said. “I believe they deserve better. And the Libertarian Party deserves they believe better.”

Barr could be forgiven the slip-up, and problems with subject-verb agreement throughout his speech. He could also be forgiven for going on too long, to the point that his wife consulted her watch and Verney studied the campaign banner. His flushed face and gyrating body made it clear that he was fired up — and ready to exploit McCain’s troubled relations with conservatives.

Barr has more problems than a little whipped-cream licking to overcome. Based on his own platform, Barr will have to conduct a John Edwards campaign, running against pretty much his entire voting record during his Congressional career. On every issue Barr names, he voted in the manner in which he now criticizes.

Bob Barr is what you get when you cross near terminal cases of Clinton Derangement Syndrome and Bush Derangement Syndrome. Insanity.

Mormon Doc on May 19, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Laura is better on the radio than on TV, where she appears stiff and maybe a little nervous. Her radio show is looser, and funnier. I can still remember some years back, when she and her then producer(s) got to imitating Osama and his ilk in their caves—it was just a riot.

Laura is very bright, and knows lots of smart people, who appear on the show (like today, some law-school dean talking about Supreme Court cases—Laura clerked for Justice Thomas). Lately she has gotten awfully religious, which is fine in small measure, but can become a bit cloying. She is at her best when playing up and making fun of the outrageous and absurd antics of the liberal establishment. If she could pull that off on TV, she’d be an instant hit.

As for presidential candidates on late-night TV, sure. For presidents, it would be a different matter.

MrLynn on May 19, 2008 at 11:21 PM

Did Bob Barr swipe his immigration policy from Barack Obama (or Bush, McCain, Clinton,…)?

Libertarian Party contender for president Bob Barr was interviewed by Neal Boortz a few days ago, and the audio and a partial transcript is here. Part of the conversation involved immigration matters, and based on that I have trouble seeing any major difference between Barr’s positions and those of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, George Bush, Teddy Kennedy, and on down the line. In fact, it’s like his campaign was the recipient of a blank cardboard box with just the word “POLICY” stenciled on it.

On the audio, he implies that he supports a form of amnesty where illegal aliens who are caught in the interior, as long as they passed a background check, would get to remain. He doesn’t specify whether that would be as a “guest” worker or whether they’d get on the “path to citizenship”. Asked about this, he says:

“I think as a practical matter, that makes a lot of sense. I’m not sure how you would go about rounding up millions of people and trying to deport them. The key here is security…”
Now, compare that to BHO:

“We are not going to send [illegal aliens] home… I want us to have an honest conversation about this.” …Mr. Obama said many illegals have “settled,” “bought property” and have children who are U.S. citizens. He said the country would have to devote “all our law enforcement resources to rounding up people without papers, even if they weren’t causing any trouble,” and once that’s done, the country would have to “empty out our jails…” …”Imagine what that would look like, basically detaining, putting in jail 12 million people. We’re not going to do that…”

So, McCain’s not far enough left on immigration? Why vote for Barr? He’s a lunatic, and I have very poor memories of him from the Clinton impeachment

funky chicken on May 19, 2008 at 11:22 PM

5/17/08 UPDATE: Barr appeared on the Glenn Beck show a few days ago and continued to sound as sleazy and misleading as his opponents as well as other hacks who support massive and/or illegal immigration. Asked whether he’d “ship [illegal aliens] home or not”, Barr said:

When you find them, you ship them home, absolutely.
What Barr forgot to mention was that, based on what he’s said earlier, that would only occur after having granted an amnesty, and he’s only referring to those who came after the amnesty or those who didn’t take part in the amnesty. He then said that he’d fine employers and was asked about the border fence. He said he wouldn’t build it:

First of all, I think it would be terribly costly. And whatever border fence you build, people are going to find a way to get around it, go under it, go over it, somehow… I think it would look absolutely awful. And even though it`s a fence to keep people from coming in, as opposed to the Berlin wall, it gives the same impression. Not the impression I want to give the world about America.
Needless to say, it’s not difficult to find other hacks saying something almost identical to that.

The Patriot Act has ruined your life? What other reason could you find to support a nutter like Barr?

McCain was pretty funny on the spots at SNL. Anytime you can get a presidential candidate to make fun of his weakest point, his age, is a good thing.

if that is all the left has to offer, President McCain need not worry at all, except for the nomination of his VP of course.

Limerick on May 19, 2008 at 11:32 PM

Back in the 90s, when they first started doing talking head TV, it was a little tough at times to separate Laura from Ann during their appearances. Later on it became appareant that Laura was the more restrained of the two in her opinions, but that doesn’t mean she’s not going to let loose from time to time, and she’s really had a burr in her butt during this campaign against John McCain. No big surprise there, since there are a lot of conservatives none-too-pleased with McCain. But while someone like Coutler just lets it all hang out and says she’s voting for Hillary no matter what the consequences, Ingraham tries to be a little diplomatic, but can’t contain all her ire at the senator and the result is a debate like this one with MKH that makes her come as having no sense of humor.

McCain came out unscathed from his first SNL appearance five years ago, the show’s main political comedy skit writer (Jim Downey) is a Republican who was the first to put the media’s hormonal crush on Obama into the national spotlight, and the segments he did had a few good lines — if anything, the first actually dragged a little bit, because it was too serious, as opposed to the “Weekend Update” plea for Hillary and Obama to keep their battle going through November. Laura may pine for a more refined candidacy of yesterday, but Laura also dated Keith Olbermann, which proves right there her judgment of men isn’t 100 percent correct all the time.

http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=OGUyZTllM2IyY2RmZGNhNzc1NTA4ZWQxNzE4Mzc4NTY=

The point of a candidacy like Barr’s is at least to highlight and defend a worldview. But Barr has never been a particularly effective spokesman for his views, even views that were long-held. The new Barr is a non-interventionist anti-government purist committed to a thoroughgoing civil libertarianism. In Congress, he voted for the Iraq war, an early version of the prescription-drug program, and the Patriot Act. As the Cato Institute’s Daniel Griswold has pointed out, he voted with protectionists to secure the interests of cotton farmers and the textile industry in his district.

The old Barr was a scourge of illegal drugs. He was a member of the Speaker’s Task Force for a Drug-Free America and authored the Barr amendment, which blocked implementation of a voter initiative to legalize medical marijuana in the District of Columbia. Last year, he signed on with the Marijuana Policy Project to work to repeal his own handiwork, explaining that the expansion of governmental powers after 9/11 had transformed his view on the war on drugs.

NO I am a military spouse and got to see the Clinton trashing of the military (and Merrill “Tony” McPeak) up close. I despise that Clinton sold secret missile technology to China and secret communication stuff to Syria.

BUT CDS is just as bad as BDS in its irrationality. And I think the Clinton impeachment really hurt the GOP. Gingrich and Livingstone (?) got nailed for being in extramarital relationships the same time they were all firebreathing mad about Monica.

And folks who managed the hearings…Lindsay Graham and Bob Barr….not my favorite guys by a long shot.

I enjoyed a few years ago when McCain hosted SNL.
Especially when he did the parody where he sang Barbra Streisand songs.

Thank heaven for these two ladies on HotAir. They almost make wading through all the loony pro-Huck comments on another thread worthwhile.

WasatchMan on May 19, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Ingraham and Coulter – two pseudo-Republican peas in a pod. But Coulter at least has a sense of humor.

In fairness, their girl Hillary aint doing so well, so they have some justification for being moody.

Anyone’s thoughts on Nixon’s “sock it to me” on Laugh-In?
Just sayin’.

Hades69 on May 19, 2008 at 9:58 PM

My first thought also.

KBird on May 20, 2008 at 12:07 AM

Many years ago Gerald Ford appeared on video tape saying “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night.” It was with the original cast. I couldn’t believe they got him to do it, but I remember it clearly. It must be on DVD by now.

Here’s my obligatory comment about how beautiful MKH is! I like older women too so here’s to Laura as well.

deewhybee on May 20, 2008 at 12:10 AM

This why conservatives aren’t renowned for their excellent senses of humor. Lighten up

True. You moderates sure got us a joke candidate this year. I’m learning to laugh it off though…I’m in favor of the Huckabee Vice Presidency…I can think of nothing funnier about a McCain Presidency than all the stupid things Mike Huckabee could possibly say.

Ingraham and Coulter – two pseudo-Republican peas in a pod

Says who, bozo? You have some official capacity for making that statement? Or is it just generic ’she dared speak ill of my suckball candidate’ wrath? Let’s look at Laura on issues for the last 8 years and McCain…er..then again, maybe we shouldn’t look at issues…because your candidate kinda sucks on a bunch of them. Maybe you should just chant your mantra instead: John McCain is the most conservative conservative to ever conservate in the conservatory. And another new cheer:

Ingraham sucks! She really really sucks!
Vote McCain or you’re not a true Republican*!
Yay!

*-some of you more rage filled McCain supporters might choose to use the alternate lyrics for the second verse ‘or you don’t deserve to live’. Then again, some of you guys might want to take your medication or something and have a lie down. Laura may not be happy with McCain but she has said she’s going to vote for him so why don’t y’all tone the hate down a little bit.

austinnelly on May 20, 2008 at 12:23 AM

Her nasally-monotonous voice is like something from SNL.

(I like her general attitude, but she’s firing blanks with this.)

In my opinion, anyone that imposed wage and price controls was not a conservative.

Gatordoug on May 19, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Yeah, I hear you. I don’t know–there are just some women who get your goat–there’s like this pathos, vulnerability there, together with her pugnacity–she’s been through a lot with her cancer and everything. She is a mighty fine-featured lady, and in wicked good shape. Look, I’m 51 and those young gals, I don’t know, they’re hot alright, but not interesting, I guess.

smellthecoffee on May 20, 2008 at 12:56 AM

What is the appeal of Laura Ingraham? Maybe I don’t get it but what is her hook?

Mormon Doc on May 19, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Smart as a whip and quite the dolly. Right on nearly all political and social issues.

But I have to admit, the “humorless scold” epithet is painfully close to the mark.

austinnelly on May 20, 2008 at 12:23 AM

Maybe Pax meant they were pseudo-Rockefeller Republicans? Too conservative for Pax’s wing of the Republican Party?

Ingraham was a speechwriter for Reagan and clerked for Thomas. I’m thinking no sane person would think she was too liberal to be called a Republican.

Coulter only clerked for some guy named Bowman. But again, I’m thinking no sane person would think she was too liberal to be called a Republican.

P.S. I’m ashamed for all you sexists calling Laura a scold.

misterpeasea on May 20, 2008 at 3:28 AM

It’s worth pointing out that McCain is campaigning to be President, not king. He’s applying for a high-power temp job. I think that buys him the right to have some humor about things. Honestly, he made the jokes before SNL makes them. I can imagine the writer’s room: “How can we make fun of McCain being old when he’s already made the jokes, and they were funny?” Then again, Ford tripping once made Chevy Chase’s career.

Republicans are funnier because they don’t take themselves as seriously as Democrats, generally speaking. They’re not trying to overhaul the country. Just give it an oil change from time to time.

Spc Steve on May 20, 2008 at 4:51 AM

How dare a presidential candidate try to show off a sense of humor?

Remember, Ingraham is from the part of the GOP that considers anything actually funny to be a sign that today’s youth are going to hell in a handbasket.
