Ingraham to MKH: McCain shouldn’t have appeared on SNL

Because, she says, it’s beneath the dignity of the office to which he aspires. This was one of the arguments from righties during the outcry over the YouTube debate, if I’m not mistaken, that Reagan wouldn’t even take his jacket off inside the Oval Office let alone gab with a talking snowman. Alas: Times change. The real lament shouldn’t be that McCain would stoop to a cameo on a dopey comedy show (he ain’t the first Republican candidate to do that, needless to say), it’s that his refusal to do so for the reason Ingraham gives would probably alienate more voters than it would attract in making him look humorless. And is this really that lamentable? What’s wrong with SNL? Reagan’s sense of humor was one of his most winning qualities and an absolute political asset. If McCain uses his in the context of sketch comedy instead of, say, at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, what’s the damage? What makes this so unrespectable, in other words?

Exit quotation: “Humphrey later said that not doing it may have cost him the election.”

“Very interesting——–But STOOPID!”

(The wrap up line delivered by the faux German intellectual.)

When Nixon did his “sock it to me” it was weird: funny and scary. Appealing to the masses, Nixon ended up with his wish come horribly true after the bungled burglary to expose Democrat corruption at its headquarters. That pundits today are revisiting Nixon as anything but what they originally made him out to be is interesting to note, aside.

McCain’s marvelous spoof on Streisand is so spot on, it is a classic hit! (From his former POTUS bid vs. Bush, correct?) Whoever wrote that one for McCain should have been consulted about his next SNL appearance as well. Hard pressed humor from the “old man” played into the SNL/MSM scenario for him.

It is in concern for McCain’s effectivity, just as in concern for Nixon’s state of mind, that I feel more angst than much humor during his latest skit. That’s just my opinion. When McCain’s funny, he’s great at it. He must be selective about who prepares his text, though.

Evidently, Ingraham didn’t find McCain’s latest skit funny. She has a right to her opinion. I doubt that she was obnoxious about it and she doesn’t deserve the obnoxious remarks on this thread.

As for the Gipper, Reagan knew how to work the crowd. He had a gift, and we loved him for it.

Yes, at times Ingraham can come across as a scold. But the majority of her radio show is laughter and joking around. She just adopted a three year old girl from Guatemala. She was joking about having to appear on Fox and not having a babysitter so she was going to ask Britt Hume to watch her.

“God that Ingraham grates on me, she is so humorless and haughty.

liberrocky on May 19, 2008 at 9:48 PM”

She’s sharp and I’m glad she’s on our side but…I gotta go with you on this one. She’s like Hannity, a goody two shoes.

That’s why I’m more in the Dennis Miller camp.

LtE126 on May 20, 2008 at 9:05 AM

Seems like MKH is starting to fill out a little bit. That’s nice. Verrrrry attractive.

LtE126 on May 20, 2008 at 9:07 AM

Well, at least McCain didnt appear in drag like a certain other republican candidate did on SNL.

abcurtis on May 20, 2008 at 9:08 AM

I don’t think it’s so much that Laura doesn’t have a sense of humor as she doesn’t like McCain, and doesn’t like the ongoing defining deviancy down of the culture in general (as with the opening skit on Saturday’s SNL). I think she ignores the realities of modern media in saying McCain shouldn’t go on the show, since 33 years in to SNL, everybody’s pretty much compartmentalized the skits into their own stand-alone segments (while going to the fridge or the bathroom when Usher comes on).

Had McCain allowed himself to be used in one of the raunchier segments, then he would have a problem, since it would be YouTubed three times around the world by now. But as I said before, the first segment was actually a little on the dull side at points, as McCain explained his opposition to pork-barrel spending before we ever got to the jokes, while the second skewered Hillary and Obama, with a side jab taken at Silky Pony.

Laura may still be seething that Republicans gave McCain the nomination, but when she opposed him, she needs to pick her fights better than the one with MKH on Monday night.

I like Ingraham overall and everything, but her crusades can sometimes be slightly off and quite annoying.

I can be quite critical at times as to what candidates may do on the trail, but I really liked his appearance on SNL.

Grafted on May 20, 2008 at 9:18 AM

I have to side with Laura on this. I think, like me, she is tired of our politicians looking like a bunch of clowns. This whole election season is an embarrassment to the nation, and if you don’t think so, you must be one of the millions of sheep they are pandering to. Laura’s radio show is hilarious most of the time, and few can really debate her because she does her homework. What is the fascination with MKH? Everyone fawns over her and what is it that she actually does? I don’t find anything she does particularly enlightening or groundbreaking? Intenet video critic? Seriously what?

This is where the whole GOP/Conservitive gap comes in also. I don’t want a buddy, I want a President!

gator70 on May 20, 2008 at 9:23 AM

I thought he was great. Lighten up, Laura.

Urban Infidel on May 20, 2008 at 9:33 AM

Saw the interview, but don’t remember what they were talking about. Ingraham looked so smokin’ hot sexy, my brain shut down and I just sat there drooling.

There’s a big difference between a cooperative laugh line on a comedy show and a political debate with somebody in a snowman suit.

Reagan may not have taken his jacket off in the Oval office but he was well known for his laugh lines.

“How do you tell the Polish one at a cockfight?” “He’s the one with the duck.” “How do you tell the Italian?” “He bet on the duck.” “How do you know the Mafia is there?” “The duck wins.”

Cheers for McLaim.

Jeers for Laura.

Though I would vote for Laura over McCain in any election.

gator70 on May 20, 2008 at 9:22 AM

I agree.

Besides, what’s up with the thread’s misleading headline, “Ingraham to MKH: McCain shouldn’t have appeared on SNL”? Is this sour grapes that Bryan got a job with Laura and isn’t playing marbles daily with Allahpundit anymore?

Laura didn’t say that exactly. She did say that her audience mostly feels as she does, and MKH agreed that MAYBE McCain shouldn’t fawn over the SNL sponsors considering that he snubs his conservative base.

That people on this blogsite jumped all over Laura Ingraham is disappointing, to say the least. You ought to have heard her attack the DA who suppressed evidence and convicted our Border Patrol agents for doing their work with enthusiasm that deserved credit, not punishment–a shot in the ass. Laura’s agenda is nothing a respectable person would trounce. As per age difference, there is no big distinction, so all the more smoke spouted in this thread. Notice that Laura and MKH are friends. MKH has her friends and that’s great. Playing friends against each other is vile.

That they hate McCain so much that they will help Obama become my husband’s Commander in Chief? Thanks, audience of Laura Ingraham. really, thanks so much

Michelle and Laura hate McCain because their bitching and moaning about him didn’t work.

Rush backdoors his help of Mav…Dennis Miller and Hannity are in his camp.

Look on Michelle’s blog, EVERY STINKING THREAD is a McCain slam.

“Used to love her, but it’s all over now”.

LtE126 on May 20, 2008 at 10:58 AM

So, trying to score cheap political points is more important than preserving the dignity (what’s left after Slick Willie) of the Presidency?

LtE126 on May 20, 2008 at 10:58 AM

That’s really sad. Oh well.

McCain wasn’t my first, second, or third choice among the GOP field. He may not have even been my fourth choice (can’t remember other also rans). But he’s so far and away better than Obama that I have to support him now.

And my mom always taught me that I could catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Why on earth should McCain pick somebody who Malkin and Ingraham would like for VP? They have done everything they could to burn any bridge to McCain … burn those bridges and salt the earth for miles around as well.

But then they repeatedly squeal that McCain isn’t swimming the river, climbing the ravine, and crawling over salted ground to court them. Um, ladies?

funky chicken on May 20, 2008 at 11:12 AM

You can thank the crybabies around here too.

LtE126 on May 20, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Humor is one of McCain’s best assets. It could well compensate for his lack of common sense on the border and “global warming”.

This is the most agonizing choice of presidential candidates ever.

Geezus people, she hates McCain, she’s a scold, she has no sense of humor, she’s this, she’s that, alright already..

The woman simply expressed an opinion that she readily admits isn’t shared by a lot of other conservatives.

Man if this thread isnt proof that their is a definite divide between Conservatives and republicans I don’t know what is. When MM starts taking blue on blue we aint in Kansas any more. The next four years are going to be a hoot!
