Inspired by this morning’s New York Sun editorial, arguing that the surest way to put Maverick over the top in battleground states is to add a Democratic apostate to the ticket. Yes, he’s excellent on the war and always delivers a tender cut of red meat when opining on his own party, but do we really want a guy who voted no on Alito one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency? If we’re willing to tolerate a pro-choice VP, toss Ridge on there and pick up Pennsylvania.
Even so, I’m intrigued by this as a test of right-wing blog readers — not their admiration of Liebs, necessarily, but of their abiding antipathy to Huck. How’s about it, HA commenters? Imagine Maverick’s shortlist is down to two; either one’s going to piss off a lot of people. Let’s see, in our own highly unscientific way, who’ll piss off more.
Update: Whoops, last poll was broken. Sorry for the hassle. Please re-vote!

No, I’d say the immigration issue tops the list for HA readers, because if we lose that battle, we lose not just the war, but everything.

Sorry, Bush damaged the brand, so we all have to take two steps back this season. Think of it as a ‘rebuilding year’.

Yeah, his campaign was pretty good at the copy and paste.
Too bad he didn’t govern that way in Arkansas. Kind of a convenient conversion, don’t you think?

I’ll be voting for McCain, with Lieberman or with Huckabee, makes no difference to me.
But I DO have a prediction to share with all of you. Now that all of you have overwhelmingly expressed your preference for Lieberman, it is a virtual certainty that McCain will pick Huckabee. McCain is the maverick, remember? He has UTTER CONTEMPT for what you people think.

How frustrating. Why can’t there be an OUTSTANDING candidate this year, when above all other elections this is when we desperately need one? McCain is certainly the best choice as far as I’m concerned, but he’s not outstanding, and I don’t consider any of these choices for VP to be either. I keep thinking that some real leader is going to jump out from behind the curtain any day now, but my “hopes” of “change” are dimming.

well putting aside one’s preferences i think we can say that Huck is a better VP choice than Lieb for McCain.
The reason is simple: Lieb. is just a double of McCain, Huck could attract and reassure portion of the base that are shaking.
Which independent is going to vote for McCain because of Lieb? I think very few indep wouldn’t vote for McCain/Huckabee but would vote for McCain/Lieb.

Another plus re: McCain/Lieberman presidency would be their opposite personality effects–
when dealing with someone needing a good firm shake-up, let McCain do his military best
when dealing with someone needing the kid glove treatment, let Lieberman do his gentle persuasion best
But I still think this is poppycock fun projections, what if.
The most interesting and obvious statement that the McCain/Lieberman ticket would make is that this is a BI-PARTISAN presidency, a novel 21st century birth of a nation, brought to you by the GOP. I swear, they’d do anything to amputate the conservative head from the party.

It is among the highest priorities, yes. Free market capitalism as an economic philosophy is also very high. Most of us here at HA are constitutionalists, and waging war/maintaining the military/defending the country is one of the ONLY explicit powers/duties granted to the federal government by the Constitution. Personally, I would like the federal government to stick to defending my freedoms (in whatever form that takes) and get the heck OUT of social issues as much as possible. It is incredibly dangerous to give the federal government any power at all on most social issues. Remember that if you give a conservative and Christian-leaning Republican majority the power to dictate social behaviors, you are giving the same ability to the socialist, amoral government that will take over when the political pendulum makes its inevitable swing the other direction. It’s a very short-sighted plan, wouldn’t you agree?
So yes, military/war issues and economic issues take priority for me over social issues when choosing who represents me at the federal level. Those fall under the federal government’s job description; the social stuff generally does NOT.

Unless you repent of your own sins, specifically the sin of judging others, the day will come that you realize the prophesy you quote applies to YOU-You-you. The truth applies to everyone; WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT. You, however, would make of Jesus another Mohammed. Now get off your high horse, and get on with your own plow job, and quit throwing thorns and thistles in your neighbor’s fields. In the end, you’ll pay for that, too.

Excellent.
You may think that I want to give a conservative and Christian-leaning Republican majority the power to dictate social behaviors, but I don’t.
I do favor the passage and ratification of a Human Life Amendment and a Marriage Amendment, but that’s defending Life (a God-given unalienable Right) and Marriage (the one man - one woman marriage concept was God’s example for us). If we allow a redefinition of marriage for homosexuals, you open the legal doors to a lot of things you didn’t expect. (Polygamy being one of them)

Hollowpoint on May 19, 2008 at 3:53 PM
Actually he is qualified to make that statement.
I’m sure Apacalyps’s debate with him has raged on over various subjects and is not purely about whether or not he is voting for Huckabee.
Slublog, the sad fact is only 2% of self professed Christians are actually true Christians, who believe the Word and obey God’s commandments.
Out of 220 million self professed Christians…only 2.2 million are true Christians that preach the gospel regularly,as commanded, and obey God’s Law, as commanded?
What a horrifying statistic.
Yes there are MANY MANY phony Christians…that Christ says he will spit out of his mouth because they are neither hot nor cold.
Do not forget this:
The lukewarm church of laodicea will not be caught up and spared from the great tribulation coming soon!
Now slublog, I do not know enough about you nor have I followed your posts enough to be able to say unequivocally whether or not you are a true or false Christian…but no matter how often the phony Christians quote scripture out of context and deceitfully, the fact remains that the spiritual man judges all things.
Yes there are several different words for judgment and you know(as we have gone over this many times) that neither I nor Apacalyps can pass final judgment on any one…no one knows whether someone will repent on their deathbed.
But the fact is we are commanded to judge righteous judgment.
That is..if you see someone sinning you are not only just in calling them out as being unrighteous and judging whether or not they are saved…but you are commanded to.
If you love your neighbor as yourself, you would warn them about where they are heading and tell them about the Glory and Justice of the Allmighty God.
We know whether someone is saved or not through their fruits!
We know what spirit compels a man through his fruits and a good tree cannot produce evil fruit.
If you false Christians(like Esthier) claim you are saved why do hate the things of God and why do you continue in sin?
If you’re saved…what are you saved from?
Are you saved from sin?
Are you saved from lust?
From doubt?
From deceit?
From idolatry?
From unjust hatred?
Do you think you can believe in evolution and remain a Christian? You can’t not believe God’s Word and still call yourself His children.
Yes you can be apolitical or not vote for Huckabee and remain a Christian….that’s not the point.
The point is there are many wolves in sheep’s clothing, who quote scripture in deceit, claim they are Christians and then persecute Huckabee purely because he was a pastor.
They need to be called out.
As does any self professing Christian who does not believe the Word and remains in sin.
SaintOlaf on May 19, 2008 at 3:55 PM

Isn’t that pretty much McCain on the issues too? Since Lieberman is the only liberal that has the GWOT right, there is very little difference between his view of the world and that of cranky old bastard! But, if as a Christian, I am ensnared in a sin:
Ps 23:1-4

He leads me beside quiet waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
NASU
It would be well if you, too, could learn of God’s mercy and grace.

He will faithfully bring forth justice.
NASU

Esthier on May 19, 2008 at 4:20 PM
I was wondering about your post before this one. Now I have to ask.
Christians are incapable of sinning?
What concerns me is the possibility that you think you have achieved righteousness when justification is only by faith alone.
Please clarify.
shick on May 19, 2008 at 4:21 PM
That depends. Do you believe one sin is more powerful that Christ’s sacrifice?
Esthier on May 19, 2008 at 4:23 PM
No. You cannot gain your salvation by anything you do; you cannot lose your salvation by anything you do. If you lost your salvation by committing sin, then maintaining your salvation would be based on doing good, on works. That is heretical.
What are you, a Nazarene?
davidk on May 19, 2008 at 4:23 PM
Question 85 of the Larger Westminster Catechism asks: ‘Death, being the wages of sin, why are not the righteous delivered from death, seeing all their sins are forgiven in Christ?” The answer gives us a wonderful summary of the theology of the death of believers in Christ:
The righteous shall be delivered from death itself at the last day, and even in death are delivered from the sting and curse of it; so that, although they die, yet it is out of God’s love, to free them perfectly from sin and misery, and to make them capable of further communion with Christ in glory, which they enter upon.
Revelation 14:13 also tells us of the blessing of Christians when they die: “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on! ‘Yes,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, for their deed follow with them’” The curse of the fall of Adam and Eve has been turned into blessing because of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

highhopes on May 19, 2008 at 4:26 PM

shick on May 19, 2008 at 4:26 PM
Does it?
There is a difference between someone being a sinner in the past and someone who hates sin, is filled with the Holy Spirit and overcomes sin through Christ Jesus.
The Holy Spirit will flee from the sinner as He cannot live in an unholy vessel.
We can overcome sin through Jesus Christ.
We are becoming perfected in Jesus.
The true Christian hates sin and has a new heart and new desires..nevertheless if he falls in temptation he will immediately repent…but the fact is we are given the ability to overcome temptation and overcome sin through Jesus Christ.

There is no self righteousness for the Christian as we know that our righteousness is not of ourselves, but of Christ Jesus that lives within us.
It is the knowledge of the Truth that leads to godliness.
Lacking the Holy Spirit there is no righteousness in man.
Christianity is about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and being filled with His Spirit.

The “fruits” of Huckabee’s campaign are rancor, division, contention, class envy, two-facedness, and in some cases rank bigotry.
Combined with the nuts and flakes so in the tank for Huck, you’ve got quite a tasty breakfast cereal of badness.
McCain/Leiberman wouldn’t be my first (or tenth) choice, but I’d still vote for it over Obama. But if Huck’s on the ticket, forget it; I’ll write in Fred or leave the field blank.

Much of the unhinged criticism (from both Right and Left) of McCain’s service in Vietnam seems to originate with Ted Sampley, a determined proponent of MIA conspiracy theories.
That Sampley’s acolytes and/or assertions are often in evidence here has been pointed out to me by other HA posters whom I generally regard as credible.
I mentioned them in the spirit of inclusiveness. I of course use the word “cultists” broadly, and with some license.

but Al is making too much money on his global warming scam to go back into government.
So I guess it will have to be :
Los Dos Juans!
He might as well pick Lieberman. They are almost identical politically (on the things that matter most to me)…. If Lieberman was the Dem or independent nominee, I’d just as soon vote for him as for McCain.
As far as I’m concerned though, there is only one pick that would make me believe McCain would be anything but a disaster:
(No, I’m not sucking up to the hostess… I really mean it.)

Owing to the fact that I believe that the next four years will be a disaster regardless, I prefer to see a D label on it so they can take the blame.
My only reason to vote for McCain is the outside hope that he will appoint good Justices to the SCOTUS.
Huchabee is unacceptable.
It appears that the moderates have defeated the conservatives (for now) in the “R” party. They will discover that they also defeated themselves in the process.

Please, don’t even try to associate MM with the world’s greatest peddler of shamnesty and all it’s wares.

Rush was talking earlier last week about possibly liking Barack Obama for this reason. I’d prefer it much more if we could still win the war in Iraq and be able to blame our domestic problems on a liberal R/moderate D presidency. If a self proclaimed “conservative” (notice the quotes) like Huckabee is VP, we won’t be able to do that. For me, it’s all about winning the War on Terror while simultaneously being able to call for a restoration of conservatism in the Republican party
ifwhen a McCain Presidency messes everything up on the homefront.malan89 on May 19, 2008 at 5:11 PM
Hyperbole on HA? Surely you jest.
