Hot Air poll: Who would you rather have on the ticket, Huckabee — or Lieberman? Update: Poll fixed

Inspired by this morning’s New York Sun editorial, arguing that the surest way to put Maverick over the top in battleground states is to add a Democratic apostate to the ticket. Yes, he’s excellent on the war and always delivers a tender cut of red meat when opining on his own party, but do we really want a guy who voted no on Alito one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency? If we’re willing to tolerate a pro-choice VP, toss Ridge on there and pick up Pennsylvania.
Even so, I’m intrigued by this as a test of right-wing blog readers — not their admiration of Liebs, necessarily, but of their abiding antipathy to Huck. How’s about it, HA commenters? Imagine Maverick’s shortlist is down to two; either one’s going to piss off a lot of people. Let’s see, in our own highly unscientific way, who’ll piss off more.
Update: Whoops, last poll was broken. Sorry for the hassle. Please re-vote!

Lieberman simply because he is tougher on the WOT. But Id rather have lieberman in the Senate thank you
William Amos on May 19, 2008 at 1:01 PM
I’d go for Lieberman! It would be perfect for these times.
newton on May 19, 2008 at 1:01 PM
Lieberman.
Nothing more to say.
mythicknight on May 19, 2008 at 1:04 PM
I see this is another one of those polls where death is not an option.
Jeff_McAwesome on May 19, 2008 at 1:04 PM
vote link gave me a ‘404′
Lieberman over Huckabee…by miles.
Grantman on May 19, 2008 at 1:05 PM
I went with the DINO, too. If for no other reason than to read the reactions on DU and Daily Kos.
flipflop on May 19, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Lieberman. If he did become Pres, he’d pull the Dems back toward the center. If the Huckster got the job, it would signal the end of the Republican party as a party of conservative ideals.
That said, both would suck. It has to be Romney or an equivalent.
peski on May 19, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Lieberman for me. At least you know where you stand with him: strong on the war and terror. Plus, he has integrity and honor.
Can’t say that about Huckabee. I may disagree with Lieberman on a lot, but I respect the guy. I don’t respect Huck.
Vanceone on May 19, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Lieberman’s more competent.
DrSteve on May 19, 2008 at 1:06 PM
“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK. That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen.” -Barack Hussein O’Jesus
As bad as McCain could possibly be, he doesn’t appear to have totalitarian tendencies.
Akzed on May 19, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Man, that blogpoll site spews. It makes this page take about 5 minutes to load.
flipflop on May 19, 2008 at 1:07 PM
I’m already having to hold my nose and vote for McCain, and that’s only because the alternative is completely reprehensible. If it’s Huck, I’m staying home or voting third-party. I could deal with Leiberman.
crazy_legs on May 19, 2008 at 1:07 PM
This oughta be good.
apacalyps on May 19, 2008 at 1:07 PM
Given only those two choices I’d go with Lieberman. Better on national security and the WOT.
Gilda on May 19, 2008 at 1:07 PM
McCain- “Bend over”
AP- “further”
JiangxiDad on May 19, 2008 at 1:08 PM
I disagree with Lieberman on a lot of issues, but I trust him.
I disagree with Huckabee on a lot of issues, and don’t trust him at all.
That was easy.
JM Hanes on May 19, 2008 at 1:08 PM
Lieberman. No question.
Carl in Jerusalem on May 19, 2008 at 1:09 PM
Lieberman because he is honest about his positions.
Huckabee like cranky old bastard lies and claims to be a conservative when, in reality, he is to the left of Hillary Clinton on many of the most important issues.
highhopes on May 19, 2008 at 1:09 PM
Lieberman.

Liebs over the Huckster.

Damn, that’s like saying “Who would you rather sleep with, Rosie O’Donnell or Rosanne Barr?”
Tony737 on May 19, 2008 at 1:10 PM
BTW, it took a whole lot longer for this page to load than it did to decide which way to vote.
JM Hanes on May 19, 2008 at 1:10 PM
Where’s Red Pill? Anyway, I go with RINO Huck. Lieberman is way too left on everything but the WoT.
kirkill on May 19, 2008 at 1:11 PM
You are a cruel, cruel man AP.
Slublog on May 19, 2008 at 1:11 PM
With a gun to my head? DINO. Huckmister is abysmal.
ronsfi on May 19, 2008 at 1:11 PM
Didn’t Lieberman run with Gore? I vote present.
jimmy the notable on May 19, 2008 at 1:12 PM
Yup! Set me down for Liebermann. (IINO?)
Tzetzes on May 19, 2008 at 1:12 PM
Liebermann. He’s more credible on national security, and–unlike the Huckster–he’s at least honest about being a liberal.
ReubenJCogburn on May 19, 2008 at 1:13 PM
I’d prefer neither, but if I had to choose I’d go with Lieberman.
amerpundit on May 19, 2008 at 1:13 PM
Out of those 2 choices I’d pick Liebermann.
Patrap on May 19, 2008 at 1:14 PM
Ahhh
Its like when we had to chose between David Duke and The Cook Edwards………
Its the process that counts
EricPWJohnson on May 19, 2008 at 1:14 PM
Seems like a blowout in favor of Lieberman!
Man, doesn’t that suck? One of the candidates for the Republican nominee sucks so bad that people would vote for a Dem over him.
The only good news is the Democratic party probably is more fractured than we are.
Vanceone on May 19, 2008 at 1:16 PM
In reality, neither. If these were the final two, Lieberman. Although it’d make the 2012 (or 2016 if McCain makes two terms) elections very interesting…
Skywise on May 19, 2008 at 1:16 PM
What would you rather get hit in the face with, a baseball bat or a shovel?
Rhinoboy on May 19, 2008 at 1:17 PM
I say Romney and then reveal that he was never a Conservative in the first place. Some Talk Show Hosts will have to eat crow and admit they lied but One Old War Hero Moderate Republican running with a Young Economic Savante Moderate Republican might get the job done.
AYNBLAND on May 19, 2008 at 1:18 PM
What an awful choice to make. But I agree with JM Hanes that I can trust Lieberman where I can’t trust Huckster, even though my disagreements with Lieberman run deep.

Liebs. Anyone good enough for WFB is good enough for me.
VolMagic on May 19, 2008 at 1:20 PM
oops, RETRACTION! DINO Lieberman! I just now read the post from last week (I was on vacation) about Huck at the NRA. Idiot.
kirkill on May 19, 2008 at 1:20 PM
OK, that was just mean! Now I’ve got to go get this image out of my head….
as to the Poll?
C. None of the above… easy for me, I’m not voting for McCain anyway.
Romeo13 on May 19, 2008 at 1:21 PM
Lieberman, because he has integrity. Also because it would make Dingy Harry and the rest of the blowhard committee chairs fowl themselves if they lost control of the Senate for the balance of the term.
meci on May 19, 2008 at 1:22 PM
The great thing about voting for VP Lieberman is that Republicans know that he is a Democrat. It would be more of a strategic vote then “he is the Republican ideal”.
Voting for VP Huckabee would just send the wrong signal to everyone that Huckabee is a Republican. Although I do like Huckabee’s cult of personality. He would be effective against Obama’s cult.
craig on May 19, 2008 at 1:23 PM
Lieberman. He is more trustworthy IMO. And we already know McCain is a liberal on most issues that matter (Iraq being the exception) so beyond the war nothing else really matters.
Zetterson on May 19, 2008 at 1:24 PM
Lieberman. I see him as less divisive. And also, not intended to be sarcastic, he is a better match for McCain’s campaign strategy, which appears to be, in part, trying to distance himself from what the left calls “wingnuts.” Huckabee has squirrel-munching wingnut written all over him.
RushBaby on May 19, 2008 at 1:24 PM
If he picks either one of them as VP, please hit me with both. Hard.
db on May 19, 2008 at 1:25 PM
How about Lieberman instead of McCain. I have a lot more respect for Lieberman, and he seems to be more interested in reaching across the aisle towards us conservatives.
SPCOlympics on May 19, 2008 at 1:25 PM
Lieberman
I picked it over 1.5 yrs ago and still think it is the only option.

Lance Murdock on May 19, 2008 at 1:27 PM
Let me see if I can put it words that even McVain understands. If the Huckster is on the ticket I will not only not stay home, I’ll vote for the third party candidate not matter who it is. That way the RNCC and MCVain can plainly see the absolute repudiation of the party and its choice.
belad on May 19, 2008 at 1:27 PM
BTW when I voted it was 70% Lieberman – 30% Squirrel-munching wingnut.
RushBaby on May 19, 2008 at 1:27 PM
I will vote for “none of the above” or better yet write in Michelle rather than vote for McCain with either of these choices.
azcop on May 19, 2008 at 1:27 PM
Huck would be the better of two bad choices. Commenters here seem to forget just how liberal Lieberman is. Last I looked , his lifetime ACU rating was in the teens.
JerryF on May 19, 2008 at 1:29 PM
Which ever one of them gives me 50 bucks first. I figure once this thing is over one way or another, I can get nice and blitzed and still afford a cab ride home from the bar.
Asher on May 19, 2008 at 1:29 PM
Oooooh. The lone dissenter. Liebs is good on the WoT, but Huck’s ok on it too. I like Liebs and do not like Huck much. He comes off phony.
However, with entitlements balooning the last thing we need is another social Liberal handing out our hard earned money to those sitting on the couch.
Huck, Huck bo buck, banana fanna fo Ohh, 8@#%!
NTWR on May 19, 2008 at 1:30 PM
Lieberman. I thinks he’s actually less of a nanny-stater than Huckabee.
rbj on May 19, 2008 at 1:31 PM
I’d still like to see former NY Governor, George Pataki on the ticket with McCain.
Several reasons. Pataki does have good Executive leadership qualities that would help make the GOP ticket even stronger.
Also, it would probably put several Northern states into play (including New York).
However, between the 2 choices above…Lieberman. To me, he is what I want in somebody that’s involved in Politics; Honesty above all.
Truly a rare quality to find in Washington.
HarryStar on May 19, 2008 at 1:31 PM
I think the Stalinist will need a Trotskyite to round out the ticket. Someone like Hitchens rather than Lieberman.
Buddahpundit on May 19, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Lieberman.
Little Boomer on May 19, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Not much of a choice, is it? Well, given that my major problem with Huck is the scorn he has for the justice system and the families of victims, and as far as I know, Lieberman has a little more respect, I guess I’d to with Lieberman. Of course, he could be as bad as Huck, for all I know. Law and order isn’t a topic that comes up much with Dems, as you know.
rightwingprof on May 19, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Lieberman for sure. Thankfully Huckabee may have no chance now after he er, . . . shot himself in the foot during his NRA speech last week.
freiherr on May 19, 2008 at 1:33 PM
I want Lieberman. He is the most capable and intelligent guy.
jencab on May 19, 2008 at 1:34 PM
Leiberman.
He crushed Ned Lamont.
Certainly he could help crush Ned’s Lamont’s less experienced and more naieve siamese twin ….. Obama.
fogw on May 19, 2008 at 1:35 PM
Lieberman! (But then I’m probably biased…)
:-)
Ah, but a “drink-sodden” Trostkyite? (Oh what the he–…)
RD on May 19, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Lieberman.
It’s amazing how easy that was. Lieberman doesn’t joke about Obama getting assassinated and doesn’t pretend to ask doctrinal questions about other people’s religions. It’s a no-brainer.
The other no-brainer is that McCain has to pick Romney. Why?
• He needs conservative votes or he has no chance of winning. Romney had the endorsement of Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity, Ingraham, Coulter and Mark Levin.
• He can raise more money than any other Republican.
• He puts Massachusetts, Michigan and California into play.
• Karl Rove has recommended to McCain that he put Romney on the ticket.
Wow. I can’t believe Huckabee was even close – he would have sunk his battle ship for sure. Too loose with talkie talkie. If you are looking for someone to guest host the tonight show, Huckabee is your man. If you want a grown up behind the desk in the oval office – go with Romney.
joncoltonis on May 19, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Lieberman. He has integrity.
aero on May 19, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Dittos:
I vote against Huckabee.
Branch Rickey on May 19, 2008 at 1:37 PM
None of the above.
If we had to choose between those two, Lieberman would be slightly better, but on issues not concering the military, Lieberman is a full-blown liberal–and he would probably negate McCain’s advantage on the abortion/judges issue.
Another reason NOT to choose Lieberman–we’re better off with him in the Senate, bucking his party on defense issues, than others who could get elected from Connecticut, and a real Republican breaking Senate ties (if they occur) as Vice President. If Lieberman became Vice President, CT Governor Jodi Rell (a Republican) could appoint a Republican to the Senate seat for two years (former three-term Congressman Rob Simmons, who lost by less than 200 votes in 2006, would be a good choice), but he would likely get crushed by a Democrat in 2010.
There are better Veep picks out there–how about former Congressman John Kasich of Ohio, or former Lt. Governor Michael Steele (an African-American) of Maryland?

Here’s the thing. Lieberman would have to jump ship to the Republicans to be a McCain successor. The unlikeliness of that happening means people won’t feel like they are choosing the next two Presidents and it may help McCain. It would also be a solid shot at Hillary’s disaffected supporters in pretty significant numbers which he will need since it’s not likely he’s going to be winning the base over any time soon and has all but declared war on real conservatives.
bj1126 on May 19, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Lieberman is never going to happen. Huck was instrumental in having the evangelicals slam Mitt the Mormon out of McCain’s way with the rest of the GOP dinosaurs. That is not enough to put a guy like the Huckster in the #2 slot. Romney is the only solution for McCain because he is a Rino and will never get conservative votes unless he make an offer of appeasement that he does domestically with the dims on a refular basis.
volsense on May 19, 2008 at 1:45 PM
Ugh. You suck. I voted for Lieberman, and now must go wash myself thoroughly, with scalding hot water and industrial strength antiseptic detergent.
For an encore, perhaps you’d like us to vote between pancreatic cancer and leprosy as our slow-death of choice?

Liebs by a long shot .. however, like William said I’d rather have him in the Senate.

Basically we lose.
ThackerAgency on May 19, 2008 at 1:47 PM
Even the expectation “to Grope” Hillary from Democrat candidates stimulates grossly unwanted images. Hence, the use of the phrase in publication yesterday.
Republicans presume to hold the higher moral ground. So fun in jest, LOL. But groping the bottom of either barrel for a RINO/DINO non-unity VP on the GOP ticket makes Mitt Romney all the more appealing than LieberHuck. Hence the poll: indirect persuasion, AP. LOL, good job.

I would like a “none of the above” option. I dont like Huckabee. I like Liebermann as a Dem but I do not want him on a ticket. Especially with a man who already has problems with conservatives.
UKFB2 on May 19, 2008 at 1:49 PM
He caucuses with the Democrats. The only reason they disowned him was his stance on the Iraq war. Other than that Lieberman is your typical Yankee liberal nanny stater. . . of course I have nothing against the man, but I don’t see how he represents my views as a conservative.
ThackerAgency on May 19, 2008 at 1:50 PM
Another vote for Lieberman … although I am nowhere near as anti-Huckabee as most of your readership.
I don’t think Lieberman is just the not worst choice – I think he’s a pretty decent choice, for a multitude of reasons, most of them already noted above.
I’d actually be pleased about Lieberman.
If nothing else, the wailing and gnashing of the teeth from Democrats would make it worthwhile. Especially once they realized that a lot of average or moderate Democrats – in others, the 95% who don’t read DemocraticUnderground or Kos – would at least consider voting for McCain/Lieberman.
Pundits, especially on the Internet, usually forget that the vast majority of the electorate isn’t into all the inside baseball, and they aren’t paying that close of attention. McCain/Lieberman would attract a lot of those folks, who really want just one thing: a government that drops the partisan bickering and does its job.
Obama/Edwards would get slaughtered by the first bi-partisan (well, sorta) ticket and first Jewish vice-President.
Conclusion: I’m right on all the above, so McCain will pick Huckabee, and I’ll begin drinking.
