Rookie mistakes again: Obama owns appeasement

George Bush seems to have really rattled Barack Obama and the Democratic Party with his speech yesterday in the Israeli Knesset. Rather than ignoring Bush’s argument against appeasement, or adopting it, Barack Obama has declared that Bush intended his denunciation of appeasement as an attack on his campaign, even though Bush never even mentioned the nationality of modern appeasers in his speech. Obama lashed out in a speech today, calling Bush’s rhetoric “appalling”:

Barack Obama has called President Bush’s comments on appeasement “exactly the kind of appalling attack that’s divided our country and alienates us from the rest of the world.”

Obama criticized Republican rival John McCain and President Bush for “dishonest and divisive” attacks in hinting that the Democratic presidential candidate would appease terrorists.

Obama strongly responded Friday to the comments Bush made in Israel on Thursday and McCain’s subsequent words. Obama told a town hall meeting, “That’s the kind of hypocrisy that we’ve been seeing in our foreign policy, the kind of fear-peddling, fear mongering that has prevented us from actually making us safer.” …

Yesterday, Obama accused President Bush of “a false political attack” after Bush warned in Israel against appeasing terrorists — early salvos in a general election campaign that’s already blazing even as the Democratic front-runner tries to sew up his party’s nomination.

But Bush never mentioned any specific person in his speech today, and didn’t even specify that he was referring to Americans. Newsbusters has the full transcript, with this relevant part of the speech.

Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.” We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.

Some people suggest if the United States would just break ties with Israel, all our problems in the Middle East would go away. This is a tired argument that buys into the propaganda of the enemies of peace, and America utterly rejects it. Israel’s population may be just over 7 million. But when you confront terror and evil, you are 307 million strong, because the United States of America stands with you.

No one in the US who runs for public office has suggested that the US break with Israel to appease terrorists. Obama certainly hasn’t suggested that, and perhaps apart from the really lunatic fringes of both Left and Right, that notion doesn’t get any oxygen at all here. Obviously, Bush wasn’t referring to American politicians in this passage, but instead politicians in Europe and elsewhere who have either an animus towards Israel or appreciation for dhimmitude. Nothing — and I mean nothing — in this speech points to any candidate or the Democratic Party, unless they identify themselves as the reference.

Obama and his surrogates drew those connections themselves. Instead of acknowledging the historical truth of appeasement’s failures, they chose to argue with it. Obama could have taken the smart route and embraced it to explain how he understands the lessons of appeasement, which is why his talks with Iran would not result in it. Instead, he got volcanically defensive, which suggests that even Obama sees the parallels between his everything’s-on-the-table approach and the Chamberlain diplomacy which resulted in dismantling Czechoslovakia.

And if Obama considers discussion of foreign policy “divisive”, then he should hie himself right back to Academia. Guess what, Senator? Presidential elections focus on foreign-policy principles, and if you can’t defend yours, then you have no business running for office.

Update: Newt Gingrich calls this a study in guilt:

Update II: Marc Ambinder reports that Bush meant to scold Jimmy Carter for his recent visit with Hamas, as Ed Gillespie explained to reporters in Saudi Arabia:

“We did not anticipate that it would be taken that way, because its kind of hard to take it that way when you look at the actual words. … There was some anticipation that someone might say you know its an expression of rebuke to former President Carter for having met with Hamas. that was something that was anticipated but no one wrote about it or raised it.”

And if one actually reads what Bush said, that interpretation looks a lot more likely than a supposed attack on Obama. Carter had just hugged Khaled Mashaal in Damascus and insisted that the US should open a dialogue with Hamas.

Barack Obama, meanwhile, continues to embarrass himself today at a presser on an attack that never was.

The Fact that Mr. Obama does not get is that if you sit down with your enemy with no preconditions then it is view by your enemy as weakness. Appearing weak is what got us the events of 9/11.The fact is that our friends and enemies both respect one thing only and that is strength. Anyone who doubts that only needs study human history.

Rick on May 16, 2008 at 2:13 PM

So if Bush mentions the historical lesson that appeasement doesn’t work, he’s being divisive. But when The Obamassiah criticizes the President, he’s not then being divisive?

It’s going to be a long march four years. The bright spot is, at the end of those four years The Obamassiah will have learned from his buddy Hugo that elections themselves are divisive and thus he’ll do away with them.

No, but Obama and the Democrats that went unhinged on this issue are idiots. For just the reason noted by Newt. Without even being identified BY PARTY, these incredibly thin-skinned fools went out and whined about a political attack from foreign soil. Even the example cited by Bush was of a Republican senator.

It wasn’t a direct attack on anyone, just those foolish enough to believe in appeasement. And those idiotically dumb enough to say “I resemble that comment”.

Well, I assumed Bush was speaking about world leaders, not candidates. Maybe Carter, but more the national appeasers. That is why he brought up 1939 Germany, and not anything recent. He was keeping it historical, and warning others, across the world, not to appease.
Now if Obama (the liberals, or you) thinks Bush was talking about them, then do what Newt says, “I agree with Bush, I wouldn’t do it and I don’t think anyone else should either”…end of debate.

People aren’t idiots, they know this was a speech for the world to hear.

Speaking of ideas that have been repeatedly tried, and repeatedly shown not to work, throughout history — how about socialism? Is Obama going to claim now that he’s not in favor of that either? The same guy who’s been telling us that it’s government’s role to provide for all our needs — health care, college tuition, retirement, etc. The guy whose wife tells us that she and hubby are going to “change” our nation by taking some people’s “pie” away and giving it to others? From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs. But hey, just because socialism has failed everywhere else it’s been tried doesn’t mean it won’t work here, right Obamas? After all, we haven’t had magic Barack, the great uniter, in charge of everything before.

The lesson the Democrats took from the 2004 election is to respond to any perceived attacks on their foreign policy credentials immediately, or end up being painted as weak the way John Kerry was four years ago. The problem here is, before you launch your counter attack, it’s normally a good thing to wait until you’re attacked in specific terms and by name, instead of pointing the finger at yourself by flying off the handle over a generality.

Obama and other Democrats have obviously had these lines laying in wait for weeks or months for the moment when someone on the Republican side attacked them over being soft on terrorism and couldn’t wait to trot out their “outrage” that the subject was even brough up. But with Bush never mentioning anyone by Chamberlain and Hitler, the Democrats and the media will now have to try and create a new reality, where in future reports on the speech it will be made to sound as if Bush mentioned Obama by name, in order to justify the counterattacks and avoid Gingrich’s “guilty conscience” label.

Ed, I hate to say this, but you’ve become a bald headed liar. The White House told people this was targeted at Obama and Carter.
—————————–
NBC (John Yang): Speaking on background, a senior administration official says the president’s language to anyone — the official specifically mentioned Obama and former President Jimmy Carter’s suggestion that the U.S. talk to Hamas — who has suggested engaging with rogue states or terrorist groups without first getting some leverage.

CNN (Ed Henry): While the words Barack Obama were never used White House aides privately admit the President referring not just to Barack Obama but other Democrats like Jimmy Carter, for example, who has recently suggested himself has sat down with Hamas leaders and has suggested that the U.S. government to should sit down with Hamas. So, the inference is clear. Although the President didn’t name names, administration officials are privately acknowledging this was a shot at Barack Obama and other Democrats.

“MORT KONDRACKE, EXECUTIVE EDITOR, ROLL CALL: I think, on the merit, the Democrats ought to win. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with Nancy Pelosi. This was an outrageous performance on the part of the president.

HUME: What did he say here that referred to Obama?

KONDRACKE: Oh, come on–it didn’t. but we know from Wendell Goler that White House aides said that he was including Obama in this statement.

“The wicked flee when no man pursueth; But the righteous are bold as a lion,” Proverbs 28:1.

There was a cop driving to work in his prowler who made a u-turn to go home because he forgot his lunch. The car he got behind sped way up thinking the cop was chasing him. He eventually wrecked his car and was found to have a trunk full of untaxed cigarettes from a hijacking.

He didn’t have to. “Everyone” knew who he was talking about. Who else would he have been talking about?

The U.N., Putin, want a list? There is more to the world then the U.S.

right2bright on May 16, 2008 at 2:44 PM

The entire plan here is to force McCain to align with Bush.

Typhonsentra on May 16, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Barack Obama has called President Bush’s comments on appeasement “exactly the kind of appalling attack that’s divided our country and alienates us from the rest of the world.”

Something like how your pastor makes appalling attacks on the US meant to divide blacks and whites, eh, Obama?

Hillary who?

Yeah, W. Viginia seems so long ago. Maybe she is just going through the motions now.

Re: 2nd amendment rights
Obama just stated that there was nothing in his record to suggest he would (sic) prevent citizens from lawfully possessing firearms for self defense.
I believe that while he was a state senator in Illinois, he voted against a citizens right to self defense. In May 2004, Obama sided with the minority 86-24 in a vote for legislation to protect citizens who use handguns in self-defense in their homes or businesses. When the bill was vetoed by the governor, he again voted against the override.
Lets see how he spins this one.

Carter. Or it was simply a historical reference.

scalleywag on May 16, 2008 at 2:40 PM

Carter? What would be the point as Carter is such a buffoon. Why even bother.

Historical reference? I rather doubt that was all it was with all that has been going on in the present and people usually use historical references to tie into the present anyway.

Let’s be real. Right, wrong or indifferent Bush was beyond any reasonable doubt referring to Obama.

Unnamed sources strike again. They say a lot of things that serve the Evil Party.

Even if this were true, and you have no basis for calling Ed a liar on this, it’s genius. It makes Hussein say, “Hey, who else could he mean but me, talking about appeasement and all.”

Pure genius or innocence. Those are your choices.

So, for the sake of argument, it is bait. We pulled a dirty trick and got Barry off message.

Imagine what Putin, Dinnerjacket, and Kim will pull on him.

(see: tree hugging sister on May 16, 2008 at 2:08 PM)

ctmom on May 16, 2008 at 2:48 PM

John Kyl agrees that Obama seems to be far too willing to get upset even when his name isnt mentioned. Feeling guilty Obama ?

wolf spitzer went from saying the White House “did not disuade” reporters from thinking Pres Bush was talking about barry to “admitting” they were talking about him. No spokesman or reporters identified. Once again, when the facts don’t support their allegations, the msm makes stuff up as they go. Man I hate those guys.

peacenprosperity on May 16, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Apparently, McCain will be having a news conference as well to respond to Obama.

I know. Most of the world is Iraq. Maybe he was referring to someone in Iraq.

MB4 on May 16, 2008 at 2:49 PM

Actually this whole appeasement nonsense started with Obama during an early debate saying he would meet with virtually anyone, anywhere with no preconditions. That’s why Bush’s historic quote yesterday stung so hard. It was, despite the denials, about Obama.

“Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before.”

Ultimately if Obama gets elected he will be in the exact same position that Bush is in now. He has two choices, do as Bush is doing (in his own words of course pretending its different) or do as Clinton did and get some bj’s while moving papers around. You either kill terrorist organizations or you run away from them.

Talking is not an option–only in campaigns.

Here’s today’s “shuck and jive” with David Brooks

The U.S. needs a foreign policy that “looks at the root causes of problems and dangers.” Obama compared Hezbollah to Hamas. Both need to be compelled to understand that “they’re going down a blind alley with violence that weakens their legitimate claims.” He knows these movements aren’t going away anytime soon (“Those missiles aren’t going to dissolve”), but “if they decide to shift, we’re going to recognize that. That’s an evolution that should be recognized.”

Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush have already played that patty-cake. He’s just bobbing and weaving hoping that folks hear what he says but don’t actually listen to it.

Thankfully if McCain gets elected we won’t have to go through the tedious learning curve. Hamas, Hezbollah etc know exactly whats coming to them. That’s why they are for Obama.

CNN was apoplectic about President Bush’s speech to the Knesset. CNN quickly enlisted Jamie Rubin to express CNN’s outrage at President Bush. Rubin predictably accused Bush of “Nixonian tactics”. I knew before Rubin even said a word that he would bring up Nixon in about ten seconds. CNN’s hostess reluctantly stated that Rubin was a “foreign policy advisor to Senator Clinton” but the CNN hostess assured the audience that Rubin was not biased in any way. The CNN hostess minimized Rubin’s ties to the Clinton. Rubin was the State Department Spokesman during the Clinton administration and was regularly trotted out during his stint at State to explain why the Clinton administration would not respond to the Cole attack and to the BlackHawk Down attack. So defending appeasement is nothing new for Rubin or CNN. CNN carefully ignored the fact that Rubin is known as Mr. Christine Amanpour.

I get the feeling that if Obama gets elected, he’s going to make Carter look like Reagan.

Rick on May 16, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Let’s be real. Right, wrong or indifferent Bush was beyond any reasonable doubt referring to Obama.

I watched the whole speech, and when he came to that part, I sure didn’t jump out my chair and say – OBAMA! So if was intentional, and I can’t argue whether it was or not because I don’t have inside knowledge, but if he was trying to dig at Obama instead of Carter et al, it was so subtle to fly over my head.
