Republicans cheer: Franken stays in for the long haul

If anyone expected Al Franken to acknowledge political reality and withdraw from the race for the US Senate, they must have him confused with some other tax cheat. Instead of allowing the Minnesota DFL Party, the state’s Democratic affiliate, to find a candidate with a shot at beating incumbent Norm Coleman this fall, Franken instead announced that he has hired a new campaign manager, one with experience at unseating incumbents. But does she have experience with tax audits?

U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken has hired a new campaign manager with experience in helping a Democratic challenger unseat a Republican incumbent.

Stephanie Schriock is a Mankato native who got her start working for DFLers Mary Rieder in 1996 and former Congressman Bill Luther in 1998.

In 2006, she was campaign manager for Montana Democrat Jon Tester, who defeated incumbent Republican Sen. Conrad Burns.

This comes as a rare piece of good news for the national Republican Party. Coleman looked vulnerable this year even against Franken, until a series of revelations about tax fraud involving Franken hit the headlines. Franken didn’t pay taxes in 17 states, ducked a New York demand to cover his employees for workers comp, and had his corporation decertified by California for failing to meet its responsibilities in filing reports and taxes. Michael Brodkorb at Minnesota Democrats Exposed discovered almost all of the evidence for these stories and helped break them into the national spotlight.

Since then, Franken has tried to downplay his tax violations, claiming ignorance of tax law. Even if one accepted that explanation, incompetence on such a grand scale doesn’t exactly cast Franken in the best light as a lawmaker. Franken has agreed to pay the back taxes owed in these states in order to avoid criminal prosecution, but has shifted blame to his accountant — and demanded that the accountant keep quiet and refrain from defending himself in public. That suggests that the incompetence explanation doesn’t amount to the whole story, and that Franken would like to keep the truth from the public.

The DFL has quietly looked for another candidate to endorse before its convention next month, hoping Franken would withdraw, but has come up empty thus far. Their only alternative at this time is Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, an extremist professor at the University of St. Thomas who makes pretty much everyone to the right of William Ayers look like a Reaganite, including Franken. Either way, the result will be a rare walkover defense for a Republican in a battleground state in 2008.

Or … well, it could be worse:

The campaign slogan? Jesse: Because Minnesotans have short memories.

Ventura might be the winner. Stranger things will happen in this election year.

How did they come up with the name Democratic Farm Labor Party. It sounds so extra-left wing. Is it the Scandinavian influence?

Nosferightu on May 16, 2008 at 6:36 PM

Ventura, because every Franken* needs a monster?

RBMN on May 16, 2008 at 6:37 PM

Franken as DFL standard bearer may even make MN a purple state in the race for POTUS?

funky chicken on May 16, 2008 at 6:37 PM

MN must be a strange state…Ventura, Franken…And weren’t they the only state to vote against Reagan in 84? Interesting.

He wasn’t that bad….

Nosferightu on May 16, 2008 at 6:55 PM

Yes! The cure for tax fraud is HIRE A NEW CAMPAIGN MANAGER!
Conservatives take cheer? Count me in. Not just cheer, but CHEERS and TGIF. And for Franken staying in the race, I’ll drink to that!

petefrt on May 16, 2008 at 6:56 PM

When he gets blown out in November, it’ll be interesting to see just what happens.

If history is any indicator, Franken doesn’t handle mass rejection very well, to wit: remember when he made that crappy movie “Stuart Saves His Family”, and it bombed? He went off, total meltdown, on live TV on SNL to the amusement of noone in a segment that drew so few laughs it felt like it went on forever. Just Franken lashing out at the American public for not going to see his crappy movie.
It was, somewhat amusing, but also quite troubling all at once.

My prediction: Norm thumps him handily and Stewie’s next book is titled: “Minnesota is Stupid and Let Me Tell You Why!”

SuperCool on May 16, 2008 at 6:57 PM

And another thing, Minnesota voters ARE angry…as well they should be…But the anger is pointing in the wrong direction…probably with plenty of help from the local ‘Media’…

Norm is alright….I can’t really even scream about Klobere…ummm..Klobber…errr…Amy Klobertshire …what ever the hell her name is, because she has not done a damn thing except get elected to the senate….Which is probably a good thing because she has all the common sense and backbone of a horseturd…toe the party line to the MAX..

The real screams are due to the local and state government..which is currently in the hands of the DFL…GaaHHH!! Apparently, they are in a race with Massachusetts, California, and Canada to see who can reach the goal of the Ultimate Nanny State first…

I’ve only been here 10 years, but yeah…I’m pissed…

Well, even with very limited experience there, my instinct is you’re correct. The state has been headed down the nanny-state path to PC collectivism for a long time now.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that’s what the Democratic party used to be called nationally once upon a time.

Hollowpoint on May 16, 2008 at 7:27 PM

Heh.

I called a company for tech support that was in Minnesota. I asked the guy “Are you guys gonna elect Franken?”

With a slightly disgusted tone of voice, “We aren’t supposed to talk about politics.”

“C’mon man I’m a conservative I do not snitch.”

“Nah, I don’t think he’s going to win”

That made my morning.

Theworldisnotenough on May 16, 2008 at 7:35 PM

Frankenfreak? I assume Minnesota will pass on that hypocritical elitist.

Now, Jesse Ventura on the other hand. . . . The Body raising hell in the Senate.

I can think of many worse things.

indythinker on May 16, 2008 at 7:39 PM

As an altruistic Californian, I’m willing to sacrifice our gov, Arnold Schwarznegger, to run as the Dem candidate for Norm Coleman’s seat. It’d be good for Minnesota, and really good for California.

Cicero43 on May 16, 2008 at 7:40 PM

I mean this with all due respect, but what the hell is up with Minnesota that they keep electing these knobs?

You’re whistling into that cold Minnesota wind, a blowin’ up your backside!

It’s gonna be a GOP nightmare!

Franken is going to win. These people in MN are nuts. Just the other day, I saw again, a car with a Paul Wellstone bumper sticker on it. There are Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers everywhere.

Remember Air America’s scheme a while back? They claimed they’d sold their company to new owners and that the new owners could not be held liable for any of the company’s previous debts. Except that the “new” owners were themselves. Air America’s investment partners sold the company back to themselves and tried to hide that fact from authorities. In legal terms, I believe it’s called fraudulent conveyance.

And Al Franken signed off on it. Michelle and Bryan Preston even posted a scan of the document with Franken’s signature.

How come that hasn’t come back to haunt Stuart Smalley?

I think it’s Minnesota’s Scandinavian gene pool. I seems the Scandinavians have some kind of recessive Bolshevik gene, so that when you get two of them together, their child could end up with Mondale’s disease. It’s very frightening.

The cold must freeze the brains of Minnesota folk. I don’t get it.

Hummer53 on May 16, 2008 at 11:28 PM

I will explain, because I am a DC area native who moved to the Godforsaken hellhole that is Minnesota, (no offense to fellow Minnesotans on this board as you all here are obviously the sane ones.) First of all, the DFL was the merger of the Farmer-Labor party, (which came out of the Socialist party – long story) and the Democrat party of Minnesota. They used to be 2 different parties, then they merged because they have so much in common. They are stil not the Democrat party – they are the Democrat Farmer-Labor or DFL party. Yes. It is a Scandinavian thing. Don’t ask me why a bunch of Scandinavians would come to the USA and take their socialism with them… free land? I don’t know. My Swedish grandma was one of those and I do not get why one would leave an already socialist country so they could come here and turn our country to crap, but…
As far as electing weirdos: Minnesotans have the worst inferiority complex I have ever seen any people have. They will always say something that they think will impress you like, “Ya know – the Foshay Tower was – at one time – da largest skyscraper west of the Mississippi.” … possibly for 2 years in the 1800’s that might have been true. Or, “Ya know, we had the largest ball of yarn in Mankato back in 1987.” and in your mind you go, “Who. F-ing. Cares?!” So they elect people like Keith Ellison because then they can go, “He’s da first Muslim elected to congress!” or they elect Jesse Ventura just to get attention. But make no mistake: this is no laughing matter and Al Douchebag Franken will, in fact, be our next Senator. Trust me. They will do it for the attention. They hate that others think of them as flyover country, they will do anything so they can get attention, and for God’s sake do not ever tell them they have an accent because they will deny it all day long, even though they do have an accent.

Don’t yah just luv it…!
GOP nightmares really do come true!

J_Gocht on May 17, 2008 at 7:13 AM

This could be a problem for both Franken and Coleman…

“Are you running for Senate?” a reporter asked.
“You’re the media,” [Jesse] Ventura mouthed before taking a question from someone else….

He eventually talked about his plans anyway.
“Now you’re asking me to stop my latest quest, which is surfing,” he said when asked about running for office again.
Ventura told the crowd that “none of the above” would be a better choice than Norm Coleman or Al Franken.

“I may go down and file,” he added. “I will be ‘none of the above,’ and if I win, I’ll go to Washington.”

I was going to bring that up(The Kerry/Edwards)thing…But I figured that was normal behavior for a Democrat..’Yeah,that’s right…I backed a looser and I’m damned proud of it’…I was thinking there might be some kind of market for an add-on sticker for these people…anyone have any ideas??

Oh, and the Bush/Cheney stickers?? They won and are still in office. Nothing wrong with that…

Franken lies about taxes, Harkin lies about service in Vietnam when he never set foot there, Rubin lies about McCain, Obama lies about appeasement, etc. Is there a liberal anywhere telling the truth?

I think his wife Franni is part of the corporation(s). It’s worked for lots of others, so perhaps they’ll be sending her out to sob on camera about how all these tax people are being so mean to her about simple, meaningless mistakes.

Only six more years until the youngest squid graduates from HS, and we are out of this sorry excuse of a state.

I grew up in NE Ohio, which is totally Democratic, but Minnesota is the most Socialist and clueless state I’ve lived in. Jesse Ventura? Puhleeze…that choice made Wisconsin look like a Republican Paradise. The fools in the DFL party here will stop at nothing until this state is Little Cuba – since they know better than you what is best for you and yours!

Oh, how I long for the days when I lived in Idaho!
