Huckabee jokes at NRA conference about someone trying to shoot Obama; Update: Painfully awkward video added; Update: Huckabee apologizes

Stupid, and doubtless to receive plenty of attention since it’s useful to so many groups. The left will use it as a Larger Truth about the NRA; the media will use it to find some racial subtext that isn’t actually there; and righteous conservative bloggers will use it to gently suggest that perhaps Huck isn’t VP material.
Way to help gun owners shed those stereotypes of being reckless and/or deranged, though.
During a speech before the National Rifle Association convention Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee — who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain — joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman.
“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he’s getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”
Melodramatic exit question from the comments to the CNN post: “Is this a man of God?”
Update: Headlines comments imported.
Update: Well, this makes things nice and easy for Russert, at least.
Update: It comes at around the halfway point. The silence is excruciating. Click the image to watch.
Update: Huck makes amends:
“I made an off hand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama,” the statement said. “I apologize that my comments were offensive. That was never my intention.”

What is the number one rule of gun safety?
Never point a gun at something you do no intend to shoot.
Are you still going to defend this stupid thing tomorrow when Huckabee issues a heartfelt apology tomorrow?
If Huckabee apologizes for it he will do so because he thinks it was wrong.

Something like that. He could’ve easily made a joke that was in bounds and funnier to boot.

Interesting choice of words.
Is Christianity about being “nice” or having a personal relationship with Jesus, being filled with his Spirit and keeping His commandments(not grieving the Holy Spirit)?
Is it “nice” to say nothing to the unrepentant sinner as he walks blindly towards his impending doom?
Is it “nice” to disagree with someone’s false beliefs that they hold dear, even though they are lies.
Is it “nice” to tell the Truth to the unrepentant sinner about where he is heading?
Is it “nice” to say something is Truth and everything else is lies?
not according to you liberals…
Sure you mormons may not think I am “nice” but you believe in a lie, so the Truth is offensive to you.

Interesting choice of words. “The truth shall make you free,” but you, sir, are a slave to your own overbearing rhetoric.
I’m comfortable with my beliefs, thank you very much. I wish you well with yours. But if you hope to convert, you’re going about it the wrong way. the Gospel (”good news”) is ill-served by those who marinate it in venom.
people of all faiths can have a civil conversation about religion, if they choose to. In a public forum like this that is not heavily moderated, it is boorish and rude to persist in the “jerks for Jesus” role. Do you really think you’re helping the cause of Christ cause with your approach? I’ve seen you insult your fellow Christians as idolaters for not being as pure in their doctrine as you. That was the hallmark of the Pharisee in Jesus’ time, and Pharisees bore the brunt of Jesus’ criticism.
Pray for me all you like. But know that if your intent is to convert the likes of me, you are failing miserably.

EXCUSE ME!? I think that you’d better have another look at the numbers. There wouldn’t BE a Republican party without the people that voted for this guy. At least, not a Republican party that would be recognizable to any of us or that would have a significant amount of political influence (And NO, I DIDN’T vote for Huck in the primaries.)
The Republican party was screwed way back BEFORE the 2006 elections. Before we even knew who the Presidential candidates were. The threads posted here by Ed and AllahPundit in the past week alone tend to corroborate this.

Snake307 on May 16, 2008 at 8:37 PM
They screwed the party in two ways. One is by legitimizing him. He is not a serious man, he is not prepared to be president, he basking in the adoration of the press and he is raising the amount of money that he can charge for his speeches.
After today that will change and the press will turn on him.
The second way they screwed the party is by playing along with Huckabee’s plan to get John McCain nominated.
There are many other people the religious right could have put up for nomination who would have been better than Huckabee.
Huckabee’s problem is not that he is a Baptist Preacher as that is one of his few redeeming qualities. In fact, without that credential, which has nothing to do with being President, he would have never won a single primary state.

Not a huge fan of Gov. Huckabee so I am not really sorry that such a poor choice of words probably took him out the Veep contention. But I don’t believe it was a racist remark. Just plain silly. I disagree with AP, I don’t think the folks at the NRA would be opposed to Senator Obama visiting them, their belief in the Second Amendment is secure enough to hear what he has to say and use the information when deciding how to vote. Obviously I am biased but most Conservatives are pretty secure in their beliefs and can hear other points of view without coming apart at the seams. Discounting the crazed obviously.

It’s not, but it’s not an important consideration.
The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting. The founding fathers weren’t sitting around thinking, “dang we better protect our flintlocks in the Bill of Rights so that we can hunt deer.” No, the 2nd Amendment, the right to bear arms is because an armed populace is the first defense against tyranny.

Do you believe the FF would approve of assault weapons?
See I believe they would find assault weapons completely unreasonable.
But I am trying to understand the human who would prefer blowing the shit out of their intended target, be it a deer or boar, with such a powerful weapon.
I mean there wouldn’t be any meat left to consume if you were hunting for food, am I wrong?
AprilOrit on May 16, 2008 at 10:42 PM
Is the general premise that the government and the gangs already have the assault weapons, so we need access to them as well??
But I am really trying to understand the art of hunting with one.
AprilOrit on May 16, 2008 at 10:44 PM
hunting? who said it’s for hunting? I want one of those big .50 cal thingies if I ever get that rich. Just to have it, and take lessons on how to use it. But I don’t hunt and would have to have very, very hungry kids to be able to kill a fluffy animal.

But it seems some people use them to hunt, I would think they would blow every good piece of edible meat into the air like brain matter splatter, no?
AprilOrit on May 16, 2008 at 10:48 PM
You’re missing the point. The 2nd Ammendment isn’t about guns for hunting. It’s about guns for protecting one’s Freedom.
An assault weapon is an efficient weapon for its commonly intended purpose. Defense. You don’t hunt deer with a .410 shotgun. There are different guns for different purposes.
In that respect, I definitely think the FF would approve. But that’s just my personal opinion. Defense against tyranny was more deeply understood back then. Our easy lives have made us weak. We take our Freedom for granted. Not a wise thing to do.
techno_barbarian on May 16, 2008 at 10:50 PM
I mean the crime pictures of assault weapon victims are brutal.
If you were hunting for food the prey would pulverized bone.
AprilOrit on May 16, 2008 at 10:51 PM
April, if the idea was for the people to have the right to be armed against a potentially tyrannical regime – their own experiences with King George III fresh in their minds – then I suspect they’d approve.
They might be horrified by the power of some of the weapons available, but it would probably take one viewing of “Red Dawn” to get them thinking, “stockpile away, citizen!”
they would be against people agitating unreasonably against the government, as the various rebellions in the early years showed. but they never went back on their concept of having the arms to begin with.
sulla on May 16, 2008 at 10:52 PM
So my question again is:
We need the assault weapons because the government is armed with them already and without them we could not arm oursdelves properly??
AprilOrit on May 16, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Yeah, I’ll defend Huckabee. It was a joke, not all that great, but for off the cuff it wasn’t bad. He cracks jokes all the time while making speeches. So what? Since when was it wrong to have a sense of humor in political forums which are generally dull as dishwater?
Oh, and BTW, he’s likely going to be VP on the Republican ticket…the only silver lining in an otherwise dismal November ‘08.
Jared White on May 16, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Got it, so the concept is that we must arm ourselves productively and by current standards to the govt.
But aren’t those who want assualt weapons for hunting??
AprilOrit on May 16, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Personally, I’ve never heard of anyone actually hunting with an assault weapon.
I enjoy shooting them at targets for the fun of it, trying to consciously improve my skill level as a marksman. I like the challenge.

Of COURSE it was Huckabee’s “intention” to “disparage” Obams.

grtflmark on May 16, 2008 at 10:59 PM
From what the hunters down here in AL and GA tell me, I would very much appreciate having serious semi or full automatic firing power if I had to confront a boar. My son visited a friend’s hunting plantation and enjoyed watching a mama and her 12 baby board rutting around. After the kids left, well….the adults removed them with prejudice.
THose wild boars down here are apparently quite dangerous.
funky chicken on May 16, 2008 at 10:59 PM
I guess there’s two types of hunting: for eating, and for killing.
There, as elsewhere: right tool for the job. Pellets for pheasants (and lawyers), standard hunting rifles for medium sized game, shotguns for zombies.
sulla on May 16, 2008 at 11:00 PM
The point is, the 2nd amendment wasn’t about establishing government power to remove weapons from responsible citizens. If the husband and I want to own a big automatic rifle, why shouldn’t we be allowed to do so?
funky chicken on May 16, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Don’t speak of that which you do not understand.
Most “assault weapons” fire a weaker round than that used by the typical deer hunter. Here in MN the .223 / 5.56 NATO round used in the M-16 (among other “assault rifles) isn’t legal for deer hunting- not because it’s too powerful, but because it’s not powerful enough.
Hollowpoint on May 16, 2008 at 11:01 PM
To some people this might be okay in a bar but not when you are representing a political party.
And it was damned disrespectful to the NRA.
If Huckabee had any chance of being on the ticket before today now he has none.

EJDolbow on May 16, 2008 at 11:03 PM
This is the intent of the second amendment. An armed populace has the means to combat tyranny. It has nothing to do with hunting.

Tonight was a rare occasion for me to go out for a few beers with some guys. Huck’s story came up and we had a huge laugh and somebody had to go to the ER to get his eyeballs rolled back to the front of his face.
Funnier still, nobody had heard Edwards’s nickname “Silky Pony”. Brought the house down!
RushBaby on May 16, 2008 at 11:08 PM
No we want them because they’re efficient at what they do. Just because the government and gangs have them is really beside the point. It’s not really a keeping up with the Jones kind of thing. Though I think it’s prudent to be able to avail oneself of the most powerful and efficient hand weapons, if one can afford them and has an inclination to do so. It’s that Freedom thing again.
I get the idea that you think guns are ‘mean’. Guns are simply tools. No more. No less. It’s a good idea to try to use the right tool for the right circumstance. Should the need arise to defend onself, an efficient tool made specifically for the purpose would be very useful.
techno_barbarian on May 16, 2008 at 11:09 PM

Just think, I’m John McCain and I want to pass some really unpopular legislation. I send Huckabee out to talk to people; he says something really stupid and offensive; huge firestorm erupts. In the meantime, I sneak my horrible legislation through. Huckabee would be a perfect pick for McCain. I mean, if you imagine as I do, McCain’s Presidency as a giant turd sandwich; Huckabee would be the sprig of parsley. Kinda like a bowl of pre-sucked on mints in a mens room that smells like a dead raccoon got tacked to the wall in one of ths stalls. An illusion of class in an outhouse of misery. Smells like…victory… McCain 08!

I can see McGuyver’s hands shaking as he types “IDIOTS!” Everybody just chill out. People can disagree without personal attacks and damning people to Hell, even when discussing God and guns. This used to be one of the most rational, articulate, and funny comment threads on the Internet and now it has been hijacked by zealots of all stripes. Relax, people.
